It is not surprising that everyone has heard of NASA and knows something about some of their exploits in space. Thing is; NASA aren’t as good as you might think, yeah sure, they put someone on the moon first, this was only in response to heightened political tension between the United States and the Soviet Union at the time. Plus the Russians were already quite far ahead of NASA in terms of achievement.

The Soviets were so far ahead of the Americans by the launch of Sputnik 1 on October 4th 1957, putting the first man-made satellite into earth orbit, that it caused the Americans to have a crisis. Military security, they thought, had been compromised and they needed to regain technological dominance over the Russians. It took until 29th July 1958 for the Americans to get their act together and NASA was born. The first American satellite was launched on 31st January of the same year; however it was highly rushed in order to regain some national pride and was launched without the intended recording devices being installed. The Russians by this time had already launched Sputnik 2 which put the first dog, Laika, in space. Laika was also the first animal to die in space, so another first for the motherland.

While NASA was still trying to work out how to send a probe to the moon, on January 2nd 1959 Luna 1 became the first probe to reach escape velocity of the earth and the first to fly by the moon, it was intended to orbit the moon but instead developed a fault and ended up being the first probe to enter orbit around the sun between Earth and Mars. Some people called it a “new planet” but being only five meters long and two wide it doesn’t seem a likely place for people to inhabit. Luna 1 is probably still orbiting the sun today. In March 1959 NASA launched Pioneer 4, which only came within 37,000 miles of the lunar surface; Luna 1 had managed slightly less than six thousand kilometres on its flight. The Soviets launched two more Luna missions in 1959, giving them the first man made object to impact the moon and the first pictures of the dark side of the moon, although a newspaper intercepted and printed them before the Russians saw them, since their technology for data retrieval was inferior at the time. NASA meanwhile was developing the first weather and spy satellites to be launched in 1960. The USSR was more concerned, it seems, with testing the possibilities of sending a man into space. Six Sputnik missions, complete with dummy pilots and often accompanied by various animals, sorted out any problems with on board systems and investigated the possible effects of spaceflight on a human. Although a few dummies and animals died along the way the Sputnik program concluded successfully with the launch of the final flight, Sputnik 10 on March 25th 1961.

The first man in space was not American as everyone at the time had predicted. The Russians used a Vostok-k rocket that was derived from the R7 missile. Basically man was propelled into space via the use of the world’s first ICBM. April 12th 1961 was the launch of Vostok 1. It carried cosmonaut Yuri Gargarin into earth orbit between 105 and 203 miles above the earth’s surface. He remained in orbit for a period of 89 ½ minutes before returning, safely, back to earth. Although the flight was not only congratulated, probably grudgingly, by the Americans, it was not a total success. Upon re-entry the service module, which kept Gargarin alive during his flight did not disengage and separate properly from the command module. Gargarin chose not to panic but instead, despite sporadic gyrations prior to re-entry, decided to wait until the wires, still holding the modules together burnt off and the two sections separated. Fortunately they did and Gargarin returned home safely. In reply to this huge first, NASA a month later on May 5th 1961 launched Alan Shepard Jr into a 15 minute sub orbital flight. Russian premier at the time, Nikita Khruschev called Shepard’s flight a mere flee hop in comparison to Gargarin’s full orbit of the earth, he was of course right and as the years went on more people recognised John Glenn’s 1962 achievement of being the first American to orbit the earth more than Shepard’s Freedom 7 flight. Before John Glenn orbited the earth in Friendship 7 on February 20th 1962, Russia had sent Gherman Titov round the earth in Vostok 2 for a whole day. The Russians it seemed were far in advance of the Americans and by the end of August 1962 had put a man in space for a four day flight; NASA’s best achievement up to this point was just under 5 hours in one flight. The Americans were starting to panic again, since they thought the Russians next goal was putting a man on the moon, and with such a huge gap emerging between the two powers it looked at this point that the more experienced Russian cosmonauts would make the first manned landing. Although the Americans knew that there was still a lot left for the Russians to master before attempting such a great feat.

If the Americans had put Shepard in space one month earlier the space race would have been much slower and perhaps manned missions to the moon would have been put back ten or so years in order for the technology to be properly developed and tested extensively. Instead communism got a man there first by way of captured Nazi rocket scientists and a hell of a lot of testing, often destroying launch pads in the process. It was widely thought, since there were so many launch failures that the Russians were rushing the development of their spacecraft and taking lots of risks. In reality it was simply down to the testing of so many different types of new rocket design that brought about their high number of failed launches. Since the captured Nazi’s were dispatched with elsewhere leaving the inexperienced Russians to develop things further for themselves. A lot of ideas were, on paper, very impressive. The N-1 rocket that was being tested for use in a manned lunar landing for instance, was the Soviets largest rocket at the time of its testing. A huge five stage rocket with thirty outputs on the first stage compared to the five of the three stage Saturn V rocket the Americans were using for their Apollo missions. The N-1 was tested twice in 1969, both ending in failure, it was tested in the same year as another relatively new rocket design; the Proton. After each failed rocket launch Russia would usually launch another test within a month sometimes as soon as a week after. The constant trial and error did have the Americans worried when one of their spy planes over Soviet territory caught a glimpse of the N-1 rocket being transferred to a launch pad some two weeks before Apollo 9 was due to test NASA’s lunar module. Although really they shouldn’t have been so concerned since Apollo 8, in December 1968, had already flown 3 men around the moon and back. However, with the deadlines for the lunar module getting pushed further and further behind schedule it looked at one point mid 1969 that it was going to be a photo finish to the moon.

The Soviet space program was going rather well up until 1969. With the announcement of NASA’s Apollo program, Premier Khrushchev demanded that more firsts were made in order to aid the political war and fuel public support. Amongst these firsts were: 1962 – First dual manned crew (Vostok 3), 1964 – First multi-man crew, although to squeeze in the extra man the crew didn’t wear spacesuits (Voskhod 1), 1965 – First EVA (Voskhod 2), 1966 – First probe in lunar orbit (Luna 10) and finally January 17th 1969 – First manned rendezvous in earth orbit and exchange of crew (Soyuz 4 and 5). Each “first” required a different type of rocket or different type of command module to facilitate each of the mission goals. This ultimately cost the Soviets the first manned moon landing. They simply left it too long to test the craft that was going to take them to the moon and spent a lot of money on other things in the process. The reason why Apollo 11 landed on the moon instead of Apollo 3 or 4 is simple; the Americans had less time to catch up to the Russians, so in order to leapfrog them they constructed a command module that didn’t need changing and could attain all their goals over various missions. The Americans only real goal was the moon after 1961, so they concentrated mostly on attaining that objective, whereas the Russians, having put the first man in space were more concerned with military applications for the hardware and the publicity and propaganda that their space endeavours generated. If the N-1 rocket had been tested successfully two or three times then the next mission probably would have seen a red rocket heading for the moon sometime in 1971. Since the Russians were the front runners through out most of the space race they ultimately lost due to poor management strategy (Khruschev being tight fisted) and greed for power (Khruschev again). Or it was simply that no one told them it was actually a race. However it can be noted that NASA had cancelled three of its early Mercury missions in order to progress to the Gemini program which would provide the much needed experience for the astronauts, while allowing time for the engineers to develop the Saturn V rocket, lunar and command modules for the flight to the moon. The Gemini program flew ten manned missions between 1965 and 1966, by February 1966 the Apollo program had begun its initial testing. The Russians equivalent of the Apollo program didn’t begin testing properly until 1969 with the failures of the N-1 rockets, by which time Armstrong and Aldrin were getting suited and booted.

NASA had better computers than the Russians almost from the start of the “race”, since America was the birthplace of the microchip there were enough around to supply NASA’s needs. As a result of the space program America got quite good at building them by as early as 1963. NASA also had plenty of computer programmers, so making the software work with the hardware for the Americans was much easier, which is probably reflected in the number of successful launches that they made. Also the Americans made better use of their captured Nazis. Russia could have caught up with NASA’s lunar endeavours but after Armstrong set foot on the moon they quickly lost interest, scrapping their lunar program for space stations in 1971 after successfully testing their lunar module in earth orbit and sending multiple probes, robots and rovers to the moon they created the Salyut program. The Salyut program was to be used as military intelligence assets but then the bill came back and they favoured for unmanned satellites. While the American man was playing golf on the moon and enjoying four wheel drive the Russians were further advancing their knowledge of other worlds, sending probes to Venus and Mars. Their culmination of the Salyut program turned into MIR space station in 1986. MIR was the world’s first constantly manned space station, it remained in Earth orbit for fifteen years before it was decided that it should be “retired” by dumping it in the Pacific Ocean. Nowadays the Russians are helping everyone else by aiding the construction of the International Space Station, (ISS). They are planning a return to Mars, hopefully within the next couple of years, who knows, Mars could really be Red if they decide to take things further.

Here’s the steps:Convince yourself that horoscopes are just for fun and do not mean anything. Do this by following these steps:

• Check your horoscope/zodiac.
• Look at what your horoscope/zodiac says. Then look at a different sign’s horoscope/zodiac. Can they both be applied to you? Then try looking at all the different signs. See how general they are? At least a few can be applied to anyone- which proves that they are not legitimate at all.
• Do this only once a while. Don’t do this everyday or your mind will brush off the non-legitimacy of the horoscope/zodiac.

Look up the history of horoscopes, and see how they are just a pseudo-science.One of the dilemmas that horoscopes/zodiacs have always had is in the case of twins. Twins seldom have the same fortune and many have different styles and personality. If horoscopes/zodiacs were real, they’d act exactly the same and have the same love life and fortune. This is simply not true!

Think about any previous loves, and the people that you get along with very well.Do they all have the same sign (that is compatible with yours?) Not likely. Horoscopes cannot predict people’s personality, and in turn, cannot predict people’s compatibility with each other. Chemistry is a lot more complicated than the month when you were born!

Think of how silly the concept really is whenever you read a horoscope. People born of the same month do not have the same personality, and you don’t always see sparks with people who have a compatible sign. You will not have good fortune on a certain day because a magazine tells you so. Those magazines are just there to be fun and sell papers to people like you.Hopefully you have been convinced that horoscopes are not accurate. It will help if you just stop looking at them, and live your life on your own terms. Have fun, and don’t worry about what a magazine column says!
