The SS Utopia had been built in Glasgow, Scotland in 1874 and was used as a transatlantic passenger ship. She was operated by Anchor Line and was used on the routes from Glasgow to New York, London to New York as well as Glasgow to Bombay in India. From 1882 her use changed and she was mostly used to transport Italian immigrants to the USA.
