The Name Joseph

The name "Joseph" seems to have been derived from the Hebrew word Yoseph or Yehoseph. It was also known to the Greeks as Ioseb–which was also the original spelling of the first name of the first General Secretary of the Communist Party: Stalin.

The name evokes biblical characters: Joseph to whom the Blessed Virgin Mary was betrothed, as well as Joseph of Arimathea (who gave his own tomb for the burial of Jesus after the Crucifixion).

The name is also found spelled as Yusuf in both Hebrew and Arabic.
