Chinese censorship did not start with Internet censorship. Long before the use of Internet started, the Chinese government, through various legislations, controlled both the print and electronic media with a heavy hand. All news and stories for public consumption had to be vetted before being aired or printed.

Media houses or journalists who went against the legislations were immediately imprisoned, a practice that is still there to date. The advent of the Internet presented the Chinese government with a challenge that it had to deal with fast, to stop its citizens from consuming content that it considered harmful. Although the enactment of various legislations on the use of computer information networks only started in 1982, Internet censorship had started long before that.

The Chinese government has put various censorship mechanisms in place to ensure that its citizens only consume Internet content that it considers not harmful. Such mechanisms include:

· Legislations – The National People’s Congress, which the Chinese legislative organ has enacted several legislations and regulations that Chinese Internets Service Providers have to adhere to or risk being de-licensed and loose the Chinese Internet market. The legislations and regulations do not only affect ISP’s, computer manufacturers are also affected. The details of all computers destined for the Chinese market have to be made available to the Chinese government, including any software installed in them. The Ministry of Industry and Information in conjunction with the Ministry of security cooperate in enforcing these legislations and regulations.

· Blockage – Presently, a number of websites have been blocked by the Chinese government from reaching Chinese citizens. Websites that contain news touching on Chinese protests, Chinese police brutality and pornographic sites cannot access the Chinese Internet. All Chinese search engines, including international ones such as Google and Yahoo have been forced to take necessary measures to remain relevant to Chinese censorship regulations or risk being blocked from the Chinese market. Yahoo has Yahoo China while Google has Google China. These are specific search engines meant for the Chinese Internet and do not contain any content that the Chinese government considers harmful. Although Google recently stated that it would no longer censor content meant for the Chinese Internet after discovering intrusion into its network by Chinese authorities, the step that the Chinese government will take remains to be seen.

· Software – The Chinese government uses several software to censor all content in the Chinese Internet. One of the software, commonly referred to as Chinese Great Firewall is capable of automatically logging off a Chinese Internet user trying to enter blacklisted keywords in Chinese search engines. The Chinese government latest requirement for computer manufacturers to install specific software in all computers destined for the Chinese market was only suspended after protests by human rights activists. However, all computers meant for schools must have the software installed. To increase the degree of Chinese censorship, although computers used by schools are connected to the Chinese Internet, accessing search engines is impossible.

Although the Chinese government does not care what non-Chinese citizens in China access on the Internet, being connected to specific sites is simply impossible. To stop Chinese citizens from interacting with the rest of the world freely, all social websites including Flickr, Facebook, You Tube and Twitter remain blocked.

The Chinese government has introduced a monitoring system for telephone communications, which makes all the talks that include the word "protest" to stop automatically.

At least that’s what the New York Times reporters, describing a joke in which a man from Beijing who recites a girlfriend on the phone line from Hamlet, she said, speaking alone, the call is interrupted.

That’s because, wanting to joke at the expense of its fads, said, “Mrs. protest too much. ” And he heard the tone.

The man said he spoke in English but in Chinese the phrase repeated on a different phone, and the result was similar, interrupting the call automatically.

It may be a joke, or maybe not, especially as the Chinese authorities seem more determined than ever to keep under control both telephone and Internet conversations by e-mail or other social networks.

In addition, months, Google has accused the Chinese government to censor or e-mail service, Gmail, but Beijing authorities have strongly denied this.

China is the new global superpower. But the country also has many weaknesses. With economic growth, drug use went up to an alarming level. So is corruption. Both seem to be signs of prosperity.

The question remains how the Chinese are ready to rule the world. China’s biggest problems are presented in an analysis done by Forbes magazine journalists.

Gambling and drug addiction issues abound China. Until now, India was known as the “homeland opium” and, in the 18th century, produced a large amount of this drug. But China has a taste for opium with the massive increase of population during the same century.

So, China has grown from a population of 150 million (in 1700) to 450 million inhabitants in 1850. At that time, they began importing opium massive West, even if until then had considered that the goods coming from there would have been immoral. All despite the fact that Westerners in China imported large quantities of silk and tea.

Drugs, a sign of decadence

High consumption of drugs is linked directly with the rise in living standards. That has happened throughout history with other states and the U.S. are a good example. The author of a book that deals with issues relating to crime prevention in China, Australian Susan Trevaskes (”Serious Crime Policing in China”) estimates that 40% of drug production in Afghanistan and Pakistan headed for China.

As a result, with increasing drug and organized crime and corruption level. Became more oppressive government policies, which led to protests by the peasants and the bloody put down their forces. It seems that about 15,000 people are executed every year in this country.

Chinese government policies have not been successful in trying to eradicate corruption through extreme violence. Prosperity has its price, and the Chinese seem to learn it as their country is developing more and more.

A list of important things from China.

China currently is the largest nation in the world. For such a large place you would thing they contributed a lot to this world. They did and much of it we still use today.

One Chinese invention was the movable type. You may think it was invented by Johan Gutenberg but it was not. The Chinese had a typing system that used wooden blocks and a press. All of this nearly 700 years before it was invented in Europe.

Another Chinese invention was the use of paper money. Since China didn’t have access to metal like Europe. Also most of China was under one ruler so it was easier to trade across different regions.

Another Chinese invention was gunpowder. It was found originally when Chinese alchemists were searching for an elixir of eternal life. They found that if you mixed saltpeter, sulphur, and charcoal. It was probably first used for fireworks or rough bombs.

A Chinese accomplishment was controlling the most land by one independent country. In the 1200’s Kublai Kahn from Mongolia conquered all of China becoming the first non-native emperor. His predecessors eventually conquered all of central and western Asia making it the largest empire ever. It vastness however caused it to fall very shortly.

A unique system of Chinese government was the dynasty system. This was basically when the rulers would always be from the same family. There was a Chinese code called the Mandate of Heaven that stated that emperors had the divine right to rule and the heavens would take a ruler out if he wasn’t worthy. Another interesting fact is that anyone who wanted to become a government official had to take a certain test. These people would study their entire lives just to take this day long test.

As you can see China has played a big part in our society today. Even now they still are one of the leading nations in the world. In fact China was more advanced than Europe was until the discovery of the Americas.
