Evidence of markers being used to signify where an individual was put to rest has been a tradition for thousands of years. Numerous names can be used for these markers such as gravestones, headstones, and tombstones. They’re placed to pay tribute for the deceased but they’re also used by genealogists in an effort to help track genealogy.

In early times people usually buried family members in a small area close to the family home. The markers were typically made from wood or rock and listed their name, birthday and date of death. As time advanced cemeteries became an ordinary in most areas. In addition to a common burial area they symbolized an added income source for churches and villages.

As the idea of public cemeteries became common the gravestones became far more elaborate. They progressed from the simple rock to slate, marble, granite and bronze. They became bigger and were inscribed with far more detail about the deceased and their life. Many fascinating history training could be discovered by studying these inscriptions.

Through the Victorian age cemeteries observed elaborate marble carved statues utilized to honor family members. Many were synonymous with religious beliefs and gave the residual family members a sense of peace in honoring their deceased. The most typical included angels, cherubs, and crosses.

There is a wide array of supplies that memorial headstones can be created from. But the most popular are granite and bronze. They are very durable and have a nice tasteful look. Many people decide to just leave them alone and allow weather age them normally. Others like to regularly take care of them to maintain the look as new and fresh as possible. It is a nice way of continuing to show respect and love for a cherished one.

Marble is very durable and no amount of scrubbing will harm it. The weather can cause calcium deposits to buildup. A combination of detergent and water can be used with a scouring pad to get rid of the accumulation. A material such as bronze requires a bit more care. The best method would be to clean it as you would granite and then apply a unique wax every 3 to 6 months. This will help significantly to keep the lacquer coating in good shape.

Historians and genealogists love the insightful knowledge that can be obtained by reading the inscriptions on gravestones. Numerous clues as to what a person’s life was about and how they died can be found. Perhaps a complete family is buried in a plot but a family member is found across town or in another state. That opens up questions as to the reasons and what actually transpired that alienated the individual.

Using the age of the web even cemetery information can be found online. Some genealogy associates and volunteers really go to cemeteries and take photos of the inscription details and post it for all to see. Sites for example FindAGrave are choices for people to explore Information can be easily filtered to find specifics of areas and families. If you need help looking for a headstone visit www.affordable-markers.com.

James Douglas (Jim) Morrison is buried in the Père Lachaise Cemetery in eastern Paris. Since the early 90s, a flat stone placed on his grave by his father George Stephen which bears the Greek inscription (transcribed here into Roman lettering) “KATA TON DAIMONA EAYTOY”. But which is the true meaning of the phrase?

Jim Morrison’s grave became one of the city’s most visited tourist attractions almost immediately after his death. The shield which placed initially by French officials on the grave, was stolen in 1973. In 1981, a bust created by the Croatian sculptor Mladen Mikulin was placed along with a new grave stone. Cemetery vandals defaced the bust, which finally been stolen (once again) in 1988. In 1990, Morrison’s father visited his son’s grave and placed the flat stone which remains until today on Jim Morrison’s tomb.

Any attempt to translate the Greek inscription which is written on the gravestone literally, will lead us in a completely wrong path. “According to his own daimon”, sounds as a decent translation, but such a straight approach could easily make us turn in a wrong direction.

Stoicism:

The name derives from the word “stoa” which means portico. Porticoes in ancient times were used as a promenade or meeting place. Zeno of Citium founded this philosophy in an Athens’s portico, in the early third century BC, which soon became popular throughout Greece and the Roman Empire. That until 529 AD, when Justinian I, ordered all the schools of philosophy to close as he perceived their pagan character to be at odds with his Christian faith. Except Zeno, the Greek philosopher Cleanthes, and later Roman thinkers such as Cato the Younger, Seneca the Younger, Marcus Aurelius, and Epictetus, are associated with Stoicism.

Stoics believe that developing self-control by mastering passions and emotions; it is possible to find equilibrium in oneself and in the world. Some basic tenets of Stoicism are:

“Every soul has Free Will to act and that the action of the soul is opinion.”

“Spiritual growth comes from seeking the good.”

“The Cardinal Virtues are Prudence, Justice, Fortitude, and Temperance.”

“The path to personal happiness and inner peace is through the extinguishing of all desire to have or to affect things beyond ones control and through living for the present without hope for or fear of the future; beyond the power of opinion.”

“Everyone has an individual connection to All.”

“One to live in accord with worldly and human nature.”

“It is irrational to want that which is not God’s will, so attune thyself with thy inner Nature and live happily.”

“Live according to YOUR own Nature.”

Finally, according to Epictetus’s philosophy: “……Each man has within him a guardian spirit, a god within him, who never sleeps; so that even in darkness and solitude we are never alone, because God is within, our guardian spirit.” The spirit on which Epictetus refers, is obviously similar to what Christians call our guardian angel. (If we study deeper Stoicism and Christianity have many common aspects on many fields, but this is not the main subject of the article.)

Daimon in ancient Greek means spirit, rather than daimon and contains no negative or pejorative qualities. It derives from the word “daiein” (=to distribute). In ancient times, deities who distributed the fate and believed to be life changers were called daimones (daimons). The protector deity that lived inside the man from his birth till death, and took care of the personal evolution and prosperity (something like the guardian angel) was called “daimon eaytoy”.

Now we can understand the true meaning of the phrase “KATA TON DAIMONA EAYTOY” as “KATA” means according. According to what conscience suggests being right, and maybe not caring about what others might say; or in other words we might say “True to his own spirit”. An idea Stoics embraced, and most probably Jim Morrison’s relatives wanted to convey through his gravestone: Throughout his short life, James acted obeying to his personal God and not to the society rules.

There are always those one or two houses on every block that do all the holidays to the extreme. Halloween is a favourite time for homeowners to show their humour and creativity to all passers by, especially trick-or-treaters. Here are some cool and creative Halloween decorations sure to spook and amuse the kids in all of us.

I’ve lived on the prairies for many years but I’ve never seen anyone decorating their hay bales before! The toothy grins greet all passersby and are an effective way of decorating what you have. Super creative!

The oddest places end up with Halloween displays in October. This display in a parking garage is a great example of that. I’m not sure how many trick or treaters they’d get down there but it sure is a great way to liven up a dreary space. I love the cobwebs on the skeletons hands. Nice touch.

Here is yet another example of a Halloween decoration in an unexpected space. These are available for purchase at www.allholidaytreasures.com or you could easily make your own with some red paint and a white shower curtain. You can just hear the psycho music playing in the bathroom… Shower at your own risk!

These walls are instantly transformed with hideous zombie heads protruding from the wall paper. Definitely a little too realistic for me! I like the cracks drawn onto the fabric “wallpaper”. I wouldn’t want to be watching scary movies in this room!

This ghoulish walkway is eerily light with the devil’s horns. They sure give a creepy red, blood like glow to the walk way. Imagine this from a toddler’s perspective trick or treating with their parent’s for the first time… I bet they just don’t know what to think at all!

This super creative hand made wreath is a great way to greet Halloween visitors. It’s “Nightmare Before Christmas” theme is easily removed, leaving a pretty green wreath in it’s place. The shooter of this photo hand made the wreath with greenery and added a paper mache skull to complete the theme.

Sometimes home made decorations are the way to go. This house boasts a huge spider web made by string ropes around the entire front of the house. A small section is left open to the doorway so that people can come and go. I’ve never seen anything quite like this before. Some people are soooo creative. I just love it!

Sometimes, the devil is in the details. Sorry, couldn’t help it! I love the way this skeleton’s torso is still “buried” underground. It definitely looks like it’s scrambling for freedom and is about to run after you down the street. I especially like how the headstone is blank. You can look at it two ways — someone was lazy and forgot or it’s left blank so that the victim’s name can be filled in after the skeleton catches up!

Sometimes the allure of the decoration is all about placement and lighting. This ghoulish skeleton looks like it’s about to leap off the balcony and glide down to eat your brains, all while being illuminated in a spot light. It this was somewhere else and wasn’t lit like it is, it wouldn’t be nearly as creepy.

In this front yard, a red spotlight is used to spotlight the devil swooping down out of the tree. The addition of the gravestones, skeleton and cobwebs add to the effect. I’d think twice before trick or treating here! I especially like how there are arms trying to claw out of the ground on the headstone to the left.

I guess whoever set up this jamming decoration is as afraid of dentist’s as I am. “Hardcore Dentistry” is a spooky name for a band! Zombie band witha spider for a microphone and giant pointed teeth – meh. Make them dentists and suddenly they’re terrifying!!!

Here’s a homeowner who has gone all out. From the pirate skeleton hung by it’s wrists and ankles to ghosts hanging in the trees to zombies with arms outstretched. This is the place to be on Halloween, obviously. My favorite is the “shrunken head” jack o’lantern on a stick. Super funny and creepy.

This house has everything you can imagine and lots you’d prefer not to! Dead men hanging from trees, the devil with wings on the roof, mummies, jack-o-lanterns and lights galore. I hope they have extra candy because lots of people are going to want to come and check this place out!

These two pictures show a very erethral yard full of ghosts and spectres in an extremely haunted graveyard. The lighting is amazing and would make even the bravest kids run screaming. The mummy glowing in the mists with outstretched arms is especially creepy. This is far from your average yard decorations for Halloween! So creative, imaginative and downright skilled.

Instead of glowing, floating ghosts, this yard goes straight for the gore. Giant rats gorging themselves on a rotting, decaying body. Disgustingly realistic, right down to the blood that is covering everything.

This final display will make kids everywhere even more freaked out to go to the doctor! It’s unknown what kind of experiments this mad physician is performing on the bloody corpse. The nurse is even involved in this one with a giant needle in one hand and a shocked face (or maybe blow up doll face!). My favorite is the shelf filled with all sorts of horrors that is in front of the nurse — a severed head and jars full of all sorts of human (?) parts and oddities. Gore at it’s finest!

So, get out there and start decorating folks. Halloween will be here sooner than you think! Here are some more “Halloween themed” articles I’ve been working on:
