The church and holy men and women are constantly criticized throughout Canterbury Tales. Gregory Chaucer, the author, uses the narrator, a host of a pilgrimage, to criticize the poor morals of church during the era the tales were written.

Chaucer, a non-christian, uses his Canterbury tales as a way to criticize the morals of many different classes, especially the nobility and high church officials who lacked the morals they taught. Throughout Canterbury Tales, Chaucer, uses the actions and opinions of the narrator to illustrate his own moral judgments against the church and religious hypocrisy.

            As the prologue begins we are introduced to many different characters the narrator meets in a pub on the road to the city of Canterbury. All the characters we are introduced to are on a pilgrimage to St. Thomas a Becket of Canterbury’s grave. In an attempt to make the trip more enjoyable the narrator act as a host for a game where all the characters agree to tell two stories and whoever tells the best will have a meal paid by the others after. Some of the characters introduced include The Pardoner, a conniving man who is willing to do almost anything to make money, The Plowman, a poor working man, The Prioress, a nun who is very much attached to worldly possessions, The Knight, an ideal Christian knight who had participated in many crusades, and The Parson, an honest Christian preacher. The Knight was the first to tell his tale, a tale about how love tore two men apart, and also the pardoner was able tell his, a tale of how money is the root of evil and will ultimately bring death. However, the death of Chaucer prohibited the tales from ever being competed.

Image via Wikipedia

            As The Pardoner began his tale he was willing to admit that he only worked for money and was honest to admit that he did constantly scam people by selling them relics for his personal profit. The Pardoner says “I preach for nothing but greed of gain (Chaucer 129)”. Even though he knows what he does is wrong he keeps participating, this trait of admitting his sins is very in line with the ethics of The Plowman who the host says “…Paid his tithes in full when they were due (20)”. The Pardoner and Plowman both tried to follow the morals god had laid out for them. However, the host looks down deeply upon the hypocrisy of the Pardoner and how the Pardoner had a pessimistic view of giving up on trying to follow morals and be a good person.

Image via Wikipedia

In the prologue both the Pardoner and the Plowman are introduced, the Pardoner a man highly ranked in the church and also very corrupt and the plowman an honest working man. It is a very clear contrasting trait that the holy man Pardoner works mainly and admittedly for personal profit while the poor working class Plowman gives most of his small income back to the church. Both in the prologue and after the Pardoner tells his tale it is made very clear that the host despises The Pardoner because of this. Immediately after the Pardoner finishes telling his first tell tale about how money is the root of all evil and admitting relics are useless he attempts to sell some relics to the host. Chaucer’s host responds very negatively and rudely to him saying:

            “I wish I had you ballocks in my hand

            Instead of relics in a reliquarium;

            Have them cut off and I will help carry

            ‘em.

            We’ll have them shrined for you in a hog’s

            Turd. (146)”

At this point The Pardoner has no idea how to respond to the host, he is left speechless, filled with anger, and completely blown away by how rude the host was. I think this moment shows just how fed up Chaucer was with the church. This is a perfect example of the hypocrisy in how the Pardoner moves straight from preaching to trying to make money off the host. On the other hand, The Pardoners self-glorification and greed is perfectly contrasted by the faith and honesty of The Plowman. The Plowman, even though he was a misfortunate man of the working class, still honored God and paid heed to the gospels. Chaucer describes the plowman by saying “he was an honest worker, good and true, living in peace and charity…Loving God best with all his heart and mind.(20)”, Chaucer shows how he favored honest men who acted out on their beliefs even if they were of a lower class. Even though he was poor Chaucer uses the contrast of the Plowman and Pardoner to make a statement about the weak morals in the church and the upper class during this period.

Chaucer begins describing both The Knight and The Prioress in a very positively. The host describes The Prioress by saying “Her was of smiling very simple and coy, Her greatest oath was only ‘By St Loy!’” (7), the host shows respect for The Prioress because she had taken up the most difficult oath that a sister could commit to during this time. By the same token, the host also has great respect for The Knight, listing that The Knight “…rode abroad had followed chivalry, truth, honor, generousness and courtesy.(4)” Chaucer shows through the descriptions given by the host that he had great respect for the noble actions of both The Prioress and The knight. Chaucer shows that he understood the difficulty of The Prioress’ oath along with the strength, grace, and bravery needed by The Knight to go on as many crusades as he had. Chaucer displays how he had much respect and understanding of what was given up by The Prioress and Knight and the moral strength it took. Despite all this, Chaucer goes on to describe how he did not like some of the personality traits of The Prioress.

Image via Wikipedia

The host makes it very clear that although The Prioress had taken a very difficult oath she still did not fully give up the worldly materials and desperately wanted to be a part of the noble upper class. The host describes the prioress as having “To counterfeit a courtly grace (7)”, The Prioress strove to be in the upper class and therefore tried to develop the habits and manners of nobility even though it did come across to others as awkward and fake. The Knight on the other had was though of highly by the host, “He was true, a perfect gentle-knight. (5)”. The host looked highly upon The Knight and how he did not strive to be nobility but how instead he only tried to glorify God through battle and spread Christianity in the crusades, the best he knew how to. Chaucer uses The Knight as a way to present the morals of an ideal Christian who only fought for God. In contrast Chaucer uses the host’s descriptions of The Prioress, for example, to petition how feeble he thought a church head striving for nobility was. Again, Chaucer uses two characters to reveal what he believed to be morally right.

Image via Wikipedia

            Despite the fact that most of the holy men and women that are described in the story are actually very corrupt and worldly, The Parson, who was a preacher in a small town, is a very devout Christian man. It is arguable that Chaucer is not placing moral judgment on the church because he also uses characters like The Parson who is an honest and hardworking leader in the church. The Parson is said by the host to not be wealthy, “Yet he was rich in holy thought and work (18)”. Chaucer however judgmental and hateful of the church he may appear looks fondly upon the parson and does not seem to be judgmental of how The Parson acts and the morals of The Parson.

Image via Wikipedia

            Chaucer uses multiple ways and characters to unveil his judgment and distaste for the poor morals of the Christian church leadership. Chaucer uses Canterbury tales to symbolize how corrupt he though the church was because he was a secular and an outsider looking in. Chaucer uses his host narrator’s descriptions and actions to show his own repulsion to and petition the hypocrisy of the church. Chaucer uses his tales as a way to display his opinions and bring attention to the corruption and poor morals of religious leaders in the church.

The story of Joseph, the son of Jacob, is an incredible one, pregnant with lessons. Herein are just a few of the lessons.

Genesis 37:3: Now Israel loved Joseph more than any of his other sons, because he had been born to him in his old age, and he made a richly ornamented robe for him.

Lesson One. Love all your children equally. Have no favorites. Had Israel loved his children equally, the hatred that existed towards Joseph by his brothers, to the extent that they wanted to kill him, would not have been there. Joseph would not have been sold as a slave to Egypt. Israel would not have been as distressed as he had been. Joseph would not have been separated from his loving mum, as a teenager, NEVER to see her again.

Genesis 37:5: Joseph had a dream, and when he told his brothers, they hated him all the more.

The dream suggested that al his brothers would bow before him, suggesting that he would rule over them. He had another dream with similar suggestions in verse nine of the same chapter.

Had Joseph known how much his brothers hated him, he might not have told them about the dreams. Three events made Joseph’s brothers hate him to the extent of plotting to kill him. These were:

The      multi-colored garment;

The      first dream; and

The      second dream.

Lesson Two. Owing to naivety, the younger folk may be prone to making wrong judgements. If Joseph hadn’t known that the multi-colored garment had made his brothers jealous, he should have known, from their reaction to his first dream, that the implication of the dream was disturbing to his brothers.

When Potiphar’s wife seduced him, Joseph stood firm in righteousness, according to Genesis 39:9.

Lesson Three. We should stand firm in righteousness, whatever the consequences that might await us.

As a result of standing firm in righteousness, Joseph enjoyed the following benefits:

In prison, the warden put Joseph in charge of all other prisoners. This implies that he must have exhibited the following qualities:

Diligence;

Dependability;

Reliability;

Responsibility;

Maturity;      and

Honesty.

All the above are godly qualities. Most importantly, God’s favor was with him. My suggestion is that this must have been brought about by his decision to be faithful to the Lord. Hence the gift of the interpretation of dreams.

He      successfully interpreted the dreams of both the cupbearer and the baker.      (Genesis 40:8-23);

After      forgetting to speak on behalf of Joseph upon his release, the cupbearer,      two years down the line, remembered Joseph’s gift of dream interpretation      when Pharaoh had a dream requiring interpretation;

On the same day that Joseph interpreted Pharaoh’s dream, he was taken from prison to the palace as a ruler, only second to Pharaoh. The Lord can turn our lives around in one day.

Hopefully this week will increase happiness levels throughout the world.

2 Billion people watched (live) the wedding between Prince William and Kate Middleton. News this morning is saying that Osama Bin Laden has been shot dead by US forces in his villa in Pakistan.

At the moment the mood of the world is fairly low but these 2 events should hopefully boost the moral and happiness of the world. The Royal Weddng was highly anticipated and really made an inpact on people all over the world, now with the death of the most evil and the most hated man on the planet, people should be really happy.

This is not to forget the terrible things which Bin Laden has done but I hope that this can give a small amount of comfort to the families of those who were killed and affected by the numerous Terrorist attacks done by Osama Bin Laden. He was a terrible man from what we saw, anyone who can do what he did to people deserves to die.

Make the most of a week with mostly good news and enjoy youselves until it goes back to the usual miserable news. These two news stories are in no way compatable but they should hopefully boost the world’s happiness.

What every woman in the world is saying...

This Friday, many fake smiles will be appearing from many, many women. They will see a prince marry a woman that doesn’t have royal blood in her. She will be living what every woman would say “The Dream”, where a regular woman marries the prince in the fairy tale.

In this fairy tale, its just one woman and some people are saying, she shouldn’t have that fairy tale ending.

Many women are believing she doesn’t deserve the prince. Prince William has been in the public eye ever since he was born and his mother was Princess Diana. His mother was always photographed for every little thing she has done in her life.

Now, its becoming his lifestyle as the paparazzi are always on his tale trying to get that picture of him. Many people believe the direction of the pictures from paparazzi are hurting the life of him and his future bride. The paparazzi make Kate Middleton seem like a overexposed woman that is just there for his name and glory.

Is that true? Is Kate Middleton there for his money, his name, or just the title of being princess? Time will tell, but for now, what is the real deal with Kate and William? Are we just so infatuated by their lifestyle, or by comparison, he is the son that people don’t want to give away.

We all seen William grow not only as a man, but seem him through his trials and tribulations. He is everyone son as the media has made and we contradict Kate as his future wife, because we don’t want to let him go. We don’t the prince to marry yet, but sometimes we do have to let go.

We have to see it through as from a boy to a man, and now as a husband.

Here is a small article showcasing some of the most hated jobs.

Top 5 Most Hated Jobs

The top 5 Worst Jobs are comprised of any occupation from a Bouncer, to a bus driver.

5. Reality TV show contestants

This isn’t much of a job or occupation but it certainly is frustrating, difficult, but at the same time, can be incredibly worth it paying off anything to 1,000 to 100,000 pounds. This is a mostly hated job as it angers viewers of specific shows seeing relatively worse off people, winning up to thousands of pounds for just answering questions, or completing tasks.

4. Politicians

We all hate it when a politician doesn’t give us what we want and for that reason, this is why the politician is ranked at number 9. Not all politicians make poor decisions, however a lot do.

3. Footballers

How annoying is it to see a man kick a ball around for 90 minutes and earn over 100k a year? Very. There are countless arguments as to how much money footballers earn, and perhaps swapping the wagers with someone who works hard. For example a nurse, doctor or even a soldier.

2. Estate agents

I think it’s fair to say we’ve all had that one Estate agent calling up your home phone to see whether or not you want an unfair deal on a poor conditioned house. They not only force deals down your throat, but can also be ridiculously annoying and this is why they are ranked number 2.

1. Traffic wardens

At number 1, it just has to be traffic wardens. They stand around all day, almost negotiating where vehicles will go, often not caring who is driving the car, and how livid they can get. Just imagine this; you’re driving home from the school run, hungry kids in the back. Your husband/wife is on the hands free device speaking to you, and a traffic warden is telling you to go a certain way, often giving poor directions. Now you have to balance the screaming kids in the back, your husband/wife and the driving. As if the kids weren’t enough. Traffic Wardens are obnoxious and ignorant often not caring about their job. This is why they are ranked number 1.

Thanks for reading.

This article will tell you the most hated jobs......
SO DON'T GET THEM!!!!!!
based on extensive research so you know everything is true.

Hi guys. Apparently, based on recent statistics. You wanted to know what the most hated jobs. So, I come to answer your question.

This first one was a shocker. You’d think it would be something like cleaning elephant shiz and dead goldfish out of the sewage system or something, but its not….. Its telemarketing. I know, me too. Whaaaa?? Well, apparently there’s quite a good explanation. Most telemarketers are getting tired of hearing things like, “NEVER CALL ME AGAIN OR I’LL KILL YOU IN YOUR SLEEP!!!” or “SHUT UP BASTARD, I DON’T WANT YOUR STUPID PRODUCT!” when they call someone’s house trying to sell them a slapchop or some other hoozee-whatzit.

The second one was also wierd, but it made sense. Security guards. Wake up at 5am, go to some small store, stand in your designated spot for 11 hours without talking to anyone, and if someone tries to steal a 50 cent candy bar, you jab him with a stick. It’s the life.

Unfortunately I can only give you three because the data gets messed with a little after this. This last one is door-to-door salesmanship. If you happen to visit 100 families per day in order to sell your homemade blender, your chances of getting success are even less than 2 percent. Girl scouts have a 40% chance of selling their cookies. After roaming for the whole day, you get nothing at the end. Big surprise, girl scouts make more money the you.

Remember, if you liked this article, rate it or comment. Seeya!

There are many jobs hated by the people fulfilling the jobs and many loved but what about the ones which are both loved and hated?

Image via Wikipedia

There are many jobs hated by the people fulfilling the jobs and many loved but what about the ones which are both loved and hated? One that comes to mind is working for the national lottery, it must be such a great pleasure to be able to hand over such grand sums of money changing people’s lives for the better but at the same time if you were someone whom is not selfless handing over such money whilst your struggling may be ruff and you may be scorned with envy.

Another job both loved and hated is being a surgeon, the joy of saving lives even when chances were low, seeing patients endure so much then be blessed with a full recovery must be marvellous to overlook however not every patient can be saved so you need to be one heck of a strong person to be able to look past the deaths and be happy with however many lives you have saved.

A plastic surgeon has to also be strong as often patients come in wanting work done whilst not needing the work and not changing their mind however you also have the joy of relieving someone of not liking their body giving them a confidence boost. Then again you must not forget the unsatisfied customers which happens in every profession however with plastic surgery the work is a more permanent and problematic issue to fix as refund does not seem to cover it.

How teachers, some students thrive whilst other lag behind seeing students succeed in your subject must be lovely whilst the ones who don’t generally mess behave and disrupt more learning.

Being a manager it must be great for those whom crave power to be able to boss people around however it does not always work like that often you have to issue disciplinarians which if you have known an employee a long time can be hard however you’re the face of the workforce so if your department does good you generally get recognition however you will also get the blame if things go south. However again distributing rewards will be a high of the job and also enjoying rewards yourself.

Please comment if you know another job that deserves to be added to this. Thank you

Know the more difficult personality types to manage in the workplace.

Among colleagues who become true friends and those with whom one has a good working relationship, there are the ones from whom we turn away at all costs and with hardly anyone can establish a proximity.

It is not that there is nothing in common nor a simple . I’m talking about those people that are practically impossible to handle and create hostility among all colleagues. Can you imagine a person of which everyone seems to run away from? Whose arrival interrupts any conversation, as lively as it is? And that him or her is never anyone’s company for lunch?

Here are the most common ones:

#1. The Workaholic

Is always working … or talking about work! In coffee, for lunch on the elevator, no matter where he is and who he is with, it seems not to know other matter other than the professional matter. Because in spite of being what workers all have in common, that is usually the worst subject for conversation, so it is not surprising that the workaholic has serious difficulties in establishing good relationships.

#2. The Geek

Always has something to say regarding all subjects. “Already did that”, “already know that”… always has an opinion and something to teach about everything said. Most people see this attitude of “wise ass” as arrogance and snobbery, and rather maintain distance.

#3. The Chatterbox

It is one thing to be communicative, it is another thing to talk non stop! Of course we all like to chat as opposed to be quiet doing nothing, but this guy can spend an hour monologuing, often on topics that are of no interest to anyone else.

#4. The Kissass

It’s the one person always on the boss’s side, supporting every comment he makes, even though he may disagree and laughing at every joke. They easily become a “persona non grata” (means something like: not welcome) among all those around him.

#5. The Loner

It is that kind of people with such a level of shyness which is often mistaken for aversion. Normally, by refugeeing in silence and isolation, these people create a barrier in contact with others that can hardly be overcome.

#6. The Stuck-Up

At first glance, his charisma attracts and impresses others, but because they give much importance to themselves and act only according to their interests, they end up alienating colleagues.

#7. The Touchy

These guys are sensitive, and generally cannot take a joke. They’re easily offended and pout when something doesn’t flow as they like. They don’t accept any kind of criticism from anyone and its sensitivity sometimes may lead to immature behavior in the workplace.

#8. The Scoffer

The prank guy, that sometimes does not know when to stop. Colleagues may get amused in the beginning but it quickly becomes annoying, his insistence and lack of boundaries. Often keeps going even after being warned, and so, becomes hated among colleagues.

#9. The Self-Seeking

Apparent friend that, as time goes by starts to let his real personality come up. They have the habit of approaching needy people at key times, and do not want to create friendships without something in return.

#10. The Snaky

They have a corrosive sense of humor and like to make mean comments, especially when you know that it hurts people’s feelings. They’re straight forward and aggressive and not everybody can guard against their attacks, preferring to keep their distance.

#11. The Gumshoe

Knows everything about everyone’s lives and assures to comment and constantly snooping on his colleagues. They try to keep control of entry and exit hours, vacations and absences of all and is always attentive to a fault or a misstep of a colleague.

That’s it.

CHEERS!

The five most hated jobs. They are either stressful,boring,tiring or very hard.

Jobs are hated everywhere.

I mean people complain about them everywhere.

But these jobs are very hated.

For the following reasons.

Cashier: I mean just looks at a cashier. All he/she does is scan some bags and stand there.NOT FUN

Security Guard: For the first 2 months they might think they are important because they are guarding something but that’s not the case. All they do is stand there.

Babysitting: taking care of little kids is a very painful job. And immature children are very hard to deal with.

Bus Driver : Riding the same bus everyday and going the same route back and forth. Also sitting down the whole day can make this job very hard.

CNA : Certified Nursing Assistant are one of the hardest jobs out there. Taking care of old citizens who have all kinds of diseases. Bathing them and taking care of them. Lifing them which is a very stressful job. So this is one of the most hated jobs.

These 5 most hated jobs are not in order. These are extremely hated jobs for they are either very boring or very hard.

These jobs are very stressfull !!!!

The worst jobs of 2011.

I will list list what I think are most hated jobs.

Accountant- using math to make yourself bored (and asleep)

Alaskan Crab Fisher- not because its boring (which its not), but because its dangerous and life threatening, though it pays good

Astronaut- incredibly scary and dangerous, though some people might take the thrill as if it was a roller coaster

Fast food cashier- taking orders from so many people that want so many different things (boring!!!)

Trash man- dumping all that dirty trash into a dirty truck might sound fun, but, believe me, it’s not

Janitor- having to clean up after those stupid, annoying kids, hmm maybe I should have put this as the worst job…

Firefighters- why would anyone in their right mind run through fires to save another?

Meter readers- at least you get some exercise!!!

Plumber- making next to nothing, plumbing’s side affects include wet clothes, anger, suicidal thoughts, and or depression.

Mailmen- delivering the mail for $10 an hour… sound fun to me!!!
