Matt is told his wife will not make it, and he should tell their friends and family so they can make peace with her passing.  During the saying of goodbyes, Matt learns that his wife has been unfaithful to him, and he is possessed with trying to find out who the other man is.    Add to the mix that he has a willful older daughter who was sent away to school on the mainland because she is hard to handle, and a younger daughter who is acting out in strange ways, and you have got one heck of a week.  Matt’s life is falling apart.  He is unsure how to handle his wife’s passing and infidelity.  He also doesn’t have a clue as to how to handle his daughters since he was one of those fathers that worked, and didn’t have a hand in raising his children.  Plus he has the whole land deal thing hanging over his head.  His life is no paradise in Hawaii.   How will Matt handle it all, and what is to become of him and his daughters?  You will have to watch the movie to find out.

This is what I call a typical George Clooney movie.  It always portrays some real life issues like family dynamics or struggles in life.  It requires a good story, good characterization, and good acting which is something these movies always have.  I like the depth this movie has.  It deals with several real and complex human issues such as infidelity of a partner, personal tragedy, responsibility to land and culture, and responsibility to family.  It also shows us no matter how beautiful the setting or how close to paradise it may seem, everyone has their issues and life is hard everywhere. 

This movie has some beautiful scenery in it of Hawaii and a lovely soundtrack both of these give both enjoyability to the film as well as some authenticity.  It was nice to see a glimpse into Hawaiian life and culture.   There was some beautiful cinematography in this film.

The acting was also well done.  George Clooney is perfect as the misguided Matt King.  He is having such a terrible time with everything happening to him at once.  Clooney gives King a lot of depth.  He is a man that is hurt but underneath he is an honest man and an honorable man.  He wants to do what is right.  You find yourself connecting with the character and hoping for the best for him.   Shailene Woodley plays Alexandra King.  Alexandra is the older willful daughter.  She is the one who actually finds out that her mother is cheating on her father.  You can see the conflict in this character.  She is on the cusp of growing up and finding her way only to be exposed to the series of tragedies’ that is happening to her family.   She is a very good character, and Shailene does an excellent job portraying her.  It is also Shailene who brings in the character called Sid.  Sid is a friend of Alexandra who tells it like it is and is something of a comic relief character. At first he seems mentally challenged or stoned but maybe with all that has happened to him he has just adopted the attitude of letting everything roll on past.  He delivers some interesting insights for a boy his age and is played very well by Nick Krause.  Amara Miller is the younger King daughter Scottie.  She is the one acting out in strange ways.  Matt finds himself apologizing to other parents for the behavior of Scottie, and finds himself at wits end at some of her antics.  She is a cute and interesting character and Amara did a great job with the character.   I also really liked Judy Greer’s role in the film.  She is the wife of the other man.  She has a very interesting and emotion filled moment at the end of the movie.  She did a great job in her limited role.  All the acting in this film was well done. 

I enjoyed this movie.  It has a good plot, good script, beautiful scenes of Hawaii and a lovely soundtrack.  It displays many human conflicts and really gives you something to think about in your own life.  I don’t know that I will be adding it to my movie collection any time soon, but it was a great one-time watch.  It also won an Oscar for Best Adapted Screenplay.  If you have enjoyed Clooney’s other films you should enjoy this one as well.
