How Far Do You Agree with The View That in Years 1934-9 Hitler Was Not in Control of The Third Reich?

In the earlier years of Hitler’s dictatorship over Germany, the Nazi party depended heavily on the army and big businesses to remove opposition. However once the Nazis came to full power they were able to dominate the political spectrum and began to implement their policies. Nonetheless many historians disagree that Hitler was in full control of the Third Reich as he wasn’t as involved as he could have been, and ordered loyal Nazi members make decisions. This view is expressed in Source 2 “Hitler often refused to take decisions”, as it talks about Hitler’s pride in his popularity and how he didn’t want to risk damaging his reputation. Source 1 talk about the cult of the Fuhrer and how he was adored and admired by the German people; this was important as Hitler’s popularity was the main focus of the Nazi regime as he was able to win support for his party. Source 3 agrees with Source 2 as it explains how Hitler would choose “the right man for the job”, Source 3 also talks about the power of Hitler’s popularity however explains that it wasn’t helpful in practical business.

The cult of the Fuhrer was important, as many historians believed that at the heart of the Nazi state and the Third Reich was Hitler’s leadership and personality. If Hitler was popular with the German people it would make new laws and policies easier to introduce as there was a general consensus for the Nazi party; therefore there would be less opposition and strikes occurring because of an unhappy German population. Hitlers personal popularity was used to legalize his policies as plebiscites could continuously be called on for support as stated in S1 “his personal ideological obsessions became translated into attainable reality”. Hitlers personality contributed to his powerful image, as S1 states that his huge “platform of popularity… made his own power position ever more unassailable” this also reflects the loyalty within the Nazi party as “none of the other leading Nazis ever challenged his supremacy”(S2) suggesting that Hitler was an omnipotent character. Hitlers power over the Nazi party was important when staying in control of the Third Reich as he had a party full of loyal members. S2 also states that Hitler would remove himself from “day to day decisions of government” so that he could take decisions quickly and not have to go through bureaucratic consultation. Hitler avoided making key decisions “especially when a decision might damage his popularity(S2), this shows us that he was conscious about his popularity, S3 also agrees with this view “Hitler was certainly careful not to associate himself with any measure that he thought might be unpopular”. Hitlers control of the Third Reich stemmed from his popularity with the German people and members within the party, he was able to use his popularity to make his ideas into reality and stay in power. Hitlers tactic of divide and rule was successful in maintaining his own political authority as argued by some intentionalists. The Nazi party was full of members trying to impress Hitler this led to cumulative radicalization, this is the idea that members were “working towards the Fuhrer” and in doing so they were coming up with new more radical theories to impress Hitler. This shows that Hitler had power over the Third Reich and he was all powerful as members of the Nazi party were remaining loyal despite the conflict within the party between individuals because of Hitlers deliberate use of “divide and rule”.

However some Structuralist argue that lack of direction and planning from Hitler resulted in a chaotic state structure with organizations and groups competing against each other, this is shown in S2 “he gave those men who were close to him conflicting responsibilities, which often resulted in a state of near anarchy”. The structuralists emphasize on the divide and rules, as the power structures in the Nazi party evolved and changed because of the poorly defined roles. This led to the growing radicalization of the Nazi party, and in turn made Hitler weak as it took the power away from him and he was proved to not have control over the Third Reich as it was seen as a “chaotic system of rival empires”(S2). S1 states that due to Hitlers popularity, actions could be legitimized, opposition was diffused, and the independence of the Nazi leadership was boosted. Although Hitlers popularity helped him gain support for the Nazi party it wasn’t useful in a political sense, as it was not much help “in the practical business of selecting goals, reaching decisions and making policy” (S3). S1 directly contradicts S3 as Historians argue that Hitler was not in full control of the Third Reich as he got other members of the Nazi party to carry out his orders and make decisions for him, suggesting that Hitler was a weak dictator; this view is expressed in S3 as “He had a preference… for choosing the right man for the job”. The fact that Hitler was afraid to make decisions as he risked damaging his reputation suggests he was a weak dictator as he was not prepared to take consequences of his actions this is shown in S2 as it states that when Hitler made a bad decision he “left his subordinates to thrash these out”.

Because of the chaotic nature of the Third Reich it can be argued that Hitler was not in full control as members were forced to compete against each other in order to impress Hitler and put forward radical policies and ideas. However I believe that Hitler did have control over the Third Reich as his popularity helped shape his omnipotent image and gain support for the Nazi party. The fact that Hitler had individuals in the Nazi party that were loyal enough to carry out his orders effectively and help him make decisions once again proves Hitler was omnipotent as no one in the Nazi party was trying to oppose him. As stated in S2 “Hitler could take any decision he wanted to and took some of his major decisions without consolation” this proves that Hitler was able to take control when he needed to and was seen as a central figure of the Third Reich.

Nazi Consolidation of Power in 1933 Was Primarily Due to The Use of Terror and Violence; How Far Do You Agree?

Nazi Consolidation of Power in 1933 Was Primarily Due to The Use of Terror and Violence; How Far Do You Agree?

There were many obstacles Hitler endured to obtain power in 1933, in this year he was appointed as Chancellor however the establishment that gave him this title were keen to hold onto their power. Hindenburg, a powerful and prestige president at the time, had support from, and control over the army, Hitler’s hope to consolidate full power was also restrained by the power of institution such as the Reichstag. Hitler was aiming to bring about a Nazi revolution in Germany, and his position as Chancellor would help him to achieve this.

Hitler used violence in order to consolidate power; however he balanced the use of terror with legal means. The Nazis understood that power had to be taken legally in order to get the widespread support from the majority of the German population. 50,000 SA, SS and Stahlhelm members were appointed as auxiliary policemen on the 22nd February in order to intimidate and terrorize Nazi opponents. This led to violence against communist and socialists, who were reluctant to act against Hitler; they misread the situation and believed Hitler’s new role as chancellor would lead to political and economic collapse, and in turn the formation of communist rule in Germany. With members of the Nazi party in the police force this enabled Hitler to order a police raid on the head office of the communist party, KPD. Hermann Goering, then claimed that evidence was found during the raid, communist conspiracy theories to seize power through force were supposedly found. With this new evidence Hitler had an excuse to use violence and terror as he could claim it was merely defensive. The Nazis closed down socialist newspapers, cutting off socialist propaganda, and members of the SA disrupted political meetings damaging any chances of the left side developing an idea on how to stop the increasing power of the Nazis. Violence was an important factor whilst consolidating Nazi power and it is proved to be increasingly important when paired with the strategy of propaganda.

On the 27th February 1933, the Reichstag building was set on fire and the communists were blamed. The use of propaganda meant that the Nazis could take full advantage of the event, and pass all the blame onto the communists who were portrayed as dangerous threats. Terror was used, as the next day 4000 communist were arrested due to the event, weakening the communist threat and proving the power of the Nazi party and Hitler. The Reichstag fire gave the Nazis the opportunity to use legal actions in order to consolidate power as the emergency decree gave the police the power to arrest suspected Nazi opponents without confronting the courts. Goebbels portrayed the emergency decree as a way to stop the spread of communism, and therefore it was welcomed by the vast majority of the German population as many feared communism. The decree gave Hitler legal reasons to arrest those he saw as a threat; because of propaganda he was able to use the decree to justify the arrest, imprisonment, and torture of many political opponents. By using violence, terror and intimidation Hitler was able to remove his political threats; at the General election in March 1933, all the communist deputies were barred from the Reichstag as a result Hitler gained a political advantage as the Nazis won the 1933 elections. After the elections the Nazis had gained the legal rights once again to destroy political opposition. The leader of the SS, Heimlich Himmler set up a concentration camp at Dachau where political opponents could be help in “protective custody”.

When presenting the Reichstag with the enabling act Hitler used force and intimidation as he brought with him the SA who swarmed the building. Again the presence of the SA put pressure on the government to pass the act, as they were reminded of the true power of the Nazis. The act granted Hitler four years of power as dictator in order for the act to be granted, the communist deputies were barred from the Reichstag and Goring was able to reduce the required number of votes needed to achieve the overall majority. In February 1933 attacks on churches took place as the Nazis saw organized religion as an enemy. The churches and religious figures supported the Enabling act as they feared the consequences if they didn’t, as they had seen what had happened to socialists and communists and did not wish to have the same fate.

After the Enabling Act had been passed, Hitler aimed to control all the social and economic aspects of Germany. First he dissolved the local state governments and introduced new state governors who were able to introduce Nazi policies. On May 2nd the offices of the social socialist trade union organization were raided by SA members and the organization was split up. The violence and terror used by the Nazis led to many socialist leaders fleeing the country as many had been killed or arrested and on June 22 the SPD was officially disbanded. The centre party, was the last party to be disbanded, and in June 1933, due to Himmler’s orders the most significant members of the party were arrested; again violence and terror was used to disband a political opponent, proving how important violence was in order for Hitler to consolidate power.

The use of violence was a key part in consolidating power in 1933; Hitler was able to use his position as chancellor to place members of the Nazi army into the police force. The propaganda used to exploit the Reichstag fire meant that Hitler could then use his legal rights to arrest communist and expose their theories of spreading communism worldwide. In order for the terror used to consolidate power to be effective it had to be connected with propaganda and legality, in order for the German people to side with the Nazis despite all the violence that was taking place. Therefore I agree that without violence Hitler wouldn’t have been able to intimidate and force his way to dictatorship as the terror was what caused people to back down and also caused parties to disband, paving the way for Hitler and the Nazi party to consolidate power.

Records also show his problem with flatulence.

The medical records of dictator Adolf Hitler recently auctioned off, but the public learned several things about the mad man – he was a cocaine addict and he had a bad case of flatulence.

The auction took place at Alexander Historical Auctions of Stamford, Connecticut. The items auctioned off consisted of a 47-page account compiled by his six chief physicians, each specializing in different areas of treatment, and of a 178-page report dated June 12, 1945, which was compiled by Dr. Erwin Giesing. The U.S. military commissioned the medical reports provided by Hitler’s personal doctors.

Illegitimate Son?

The records proved that Adolf Hitler farted uncontrollably, used cocaine to clear his sinuses, ingested some 28 drugs at a time and received injections of bull testicle extracts to bolster his libido.

Bidding for the documents included ten X-rays of various views of the dictator’s skull, the results of several electroencephalogram (EEG) tests and sketches of the inside of his nose. Among the more mundane revelations in the medical records was that Hitler liked marmalade for breakfast

However, a more revealing item was that Hitler may have had an Illegitimate son.

Though there is no official document regarding Hitler’s love of cocaine, Giesing wrote that the dictator inhaled powdered cocaine to “clear his sinuses” and “soothe” his throat. Libido Boost

Since he had begun to “crave” the drug, his dosage had to be lowered, Giesing wrote. In the attempt to control his flatulence, Hitler regularly ingested up to 28 drugs, including “anti-gas” pills based on strychnine, a poison that caused him liver and stomach ailments.

One of the doctors, Theodore Morrell, reported that the dictator received injections of extracts of seminal vesicles, testis and the prostata of young bulls.

“Morrell believes that Hitler, although not strongly inclined to sexual activity, did have sexual intercourse with Eva Braun, though they were accustomed to sleep in separate beds,” said one of the papers.

The medical reports were expected to have bids of as much as $2,000 each.

The period 1929-33 saw many worldwide changed, from the Wall Street Crash in October 1929 to the collapse of the Weimar Government in 1933. The Great Depression, which still leaves bitter tastes in stock brokers mouths, hurt Germany more than most, the German economy was finally but slowly, after being crippled by the Treaty of Versailles, returning to its once former glory, this was completely shattered by the Wall Street Crash, the world became bankrupt overnight, people pulled money out of Germany so fast she had no time to prepare. People from all over the world, mainly North America were injecting the Weimar Germany, mainly to their own interests, leading to a recovery in German economy, the Wall Street Crash saw an end to this injection from investors, people with money wanted to keep it to themselves and those with no money had no way of making money, especially in Germany. Unemployment figures compared to today’s figures are astronomical, many millions of people lost their jobs, and whole sectors of work just disappeared overnight, typically as history shows, the more unemployment there is in a country the more likely the country will be to vote for the extreme parties, in this case the Communists and the National Socialist German Workers Party (Nazi party) gained the most from this.

The German Papiermark was printed in excess by the Weimar Republic, during the end of 1923 the Government were printing 100 Trillion mark notes, the Papiermark lost so much value that it was practically worthless, it was so worthless in fact that the basics, for instance a loaf of bread would cost many trillion marks, there would be no return for the Papiermark, so in 1924 it was replaced by the Rentenmark, 1 trillion Papiermarks for 1 Renten. This step did help stabilise the economy to some degree but even though the Rentenmark was helping things in Germany it did not solve all of her problems, she still had the fact that many extreme parties had a lot of votes in the Reichstag, people were not happy with the way the Weimar Government was running the country, just under half of all German voters were also not happy with Hindenburg, 36% wanted Hitler as prime minister and 11% went to a Communist leader. The fact that the country did not agree with the Chancellors ultimately led to more and more people believing he only way out of the rut Germany was in would be to vote for an extreme party.

Chancellors and Hindenburg between 1929 and 1933 were as equally responsible for the downfall of democracy in German society as the Wall Street Crash and unemployment was. Out of the 4 chancellors, Herman Muller, Heinrich Bruning, Franz von Papen and Kurt von Schleicher the two that were in my views most responsible were Bruning and von Papen. Whilst Herman Muller was chancellor many devastating world events occurred, however he could not have changed the fate of German under his chancellorship, the Wall Street Crash was inevitable, he introduced the Young Plan, which allowed German people to pay reparations slower so she had time to recover. Many people in Germany were happy with this plan, however the Nazi party were not, they believed that reparations should not have been paid from the very beginning and paying them was an injustice to the German people. The campaign the Nazi’s held against it, organised by a Nationalist (Alfred Hugenburg) gave national exposure to the Nazi party and other right-wing political parties. The extra exposure may have led to the Nazi party gaining a place in the State Government. The Nazi party was now supported by some industrialists who injected money to fuel the machine. Bruning, to my mind was the beginning of the end of Democracy. Chancellors had to be voted in, just as Prime Ministers are, Bruning was appointed by Hindenburg and not voted due to no party having a majority, Hindenburg himself was a conservative, we can tell this by Muller who resigned due to no change in state welfare, which is a right-wing idea. The Reichstag was in chaos, no one had majority so Article 48 was used to pass laws, by 1932 the Reichstag met for 13 days and had only passed 5 laws, Hindenburg alone had passed 60 laws. People living in Germany would have seen the state that their country was in and how Hindenburg was, by this time already acting like a dictator himself.

The SA were a strong tool to gaining support for the Nazi party, they fought the Red Menace, which gained mixed reviews with people, Communist supporters were, obviously, not happy with this, but democratic voters and right wing voters were, the Nazi party always had more support than the Communist party, people were fearful of what they did not fully understand or what they had been told, the Bolshevik revolution in 1917 was still fresh in many peoples mind, and the Germans never were much more than at a political stalemate with each other. Most German people did not want to be associated with the Russians. However Mussolini’s Italy was prospering, her people were fed, riots were practically and they were amongst the fastest recovering nations after October 1929. People admired this; they saw unemployment figures well below that of their motherland. What the Nazi party stood for gave people what they wanted, however the Nazi party although were the biggest party in the Reichstag they never managed to gain a majority, in 1933 they had just over 1/3 of the seats in Parliament. Hindenburg had doubts about the genuineness of Adolf Hitler himself, and it was not until late in 1933 that he agreed to allow Hitler to become Chancellor.

Joseph Goebbels, leader of propaganda used many new techniques the world had never seen before to spread the word about the Nazi party, with Hitler becoming leader of the Nazi party in 1921 meeting Goebbels only 2 years later, he arranged massive rallies to show the power of the Nazi party to every state. Hitler travelled by plane and could deliver a speech in Nuremburg and then fly on to Munich or deeper into Bavaria on the same day, this gave many people exposure to the Nazi party and their beliefs. Goebbels himself was known for his anti-Semitic views and became very close to Hitler from the years 1923 to 33. Without Goebbels spreading the word I don’t think enough people would have known about the Nazi party, the Munich Beer hall Putch is a classic example of this, with as many as 3 people being sentenced to death, and Hitler only getting a 5 year sentence in Landsburg prison, in this time he wrote his book Mein Kampf, which was further propaganda. The Nazis really relied on Proppaganda and violence against communists to achieve the stature that 3 million people in Germany voted for them. Hitler was either incredibly lucky or just in the right place at the right time. With the world economy declining rapidly people turned to him to sort the mess of their country out, coupled with von Papen’s secret deals with Hitler and Hindenburg.

In conclusion I believe the massive spike in support for the Nazi party would have been short lived if Hitler had not become Chancellor and rapidly improved things in Germany, even if he did it in an illegitimate way. The Wall Street Crash, although inevitable was the perfect opportunity for the Nazi party to gain as much support as they could, people always turn to extreme parties when things are not going right and tend not to choose these parties when everything is okay. The German bitterness towards the Treaty of Versailles also played a part in the rapid expansion in support for the Nazi party, with the promises the Nazi party put forth they believed that they could sort out the mess the ‘November Criminals’ had got their country in, to some extents they were correct. Hindenburg and von Papen were also to blame for the support rise in German politics, Hindenburg himself almost lost his place as President. They allowed exposure to the Nazi party and did nothing to stop it, and even lifted curfews on the SA allowing more people to join and more people to take notice. But ultimately I believe that unemployment due to the Wall Street crash was to blame, if things had remained and Germany was still becoming more economically stable then people would have had no reason whatsoever to vote for the far-right party. People were tired of having no money, and state welfare could not provide for them, what the Nazi’s were offering to many people seemed too good to be true, ‘A chicken in every pot and a Car on every drive’ as Goebbels once stated. The agenda of the Nazi party was vastly appealing and appealed almost everyone. The rich could keep their riches; the poor would no longer be poor.

In "Hitler, God, and the Bible," Ray Comfort exposes Adolf Hitler's theology and abuse of religion as a means to seize political power and ultimately instigate World War II and genocide.

In the years after World War I, as hollow-eyed Germans pushed carts of paper money over cobble-stone streets in the hopes of finding a stale loaf of bread at the market, one man emerged who promised to make it all better.

Adolf Hitler, to that point a faceless nobody with no distinction whatsoever, rose to unparalleled power. Most of us know the rest of the story (though I doubt many young people grasp it much). Yet in the countless volumes that have been written about this diabolical dictator, few have explored how his twisted views of religious faith were used to subdue a continent.

That’s why Ray Comfort’s new book, “Hitler, God & the Bible” is such a valuable addition to this field of study. So eager was I to read this book (I’m a major Ray Comfort fan), that I read it over dinner one evening, turning pages with one hand while using a fork at a local Bavarian restaurant with the other.

Comfort, a keen observer of worldview in the teeming masses that bob and weave through our culture, has not only penned what I feel is an extraordinary book … but he also hints that this is the first in a series! Surely, “Stalin, God & the Bible” cannot be far behind.

In “Hitler, God, and the Bible,” international evangelist and best-selling author Ray Comfort exposes Adolf Hitler’s theology and abuse of religion as a means to seize political power and ultimately instigate World War II and genocide.

This fascinating study mines the depths of Hitler’s beliefs and convincingly argues that without Hitler’s misuse of Christianity the Third Reich would not have had its legendary rise, resulting in the deaths of more than six million Jews.

Highlighting Hitler’s youth, his influences, and his path to seducing a nation, Hitler, God, and the Bible is a fresh, stinging reminder of the power of the cross and how its misuse led to the Final Solution.

About the Author

Comfort started Living Waters Publications and The Way of the Master in Bellflower, California and has published a number of books, including “The Way of the Master,” “You Can Lead an Atheist to Evidence, But You Can’t Make Him Think,” and “Nothing Created Everything.”

The former concentration camp guard John Demjanjuk has died in a nursing home, Upper Bavaria. For complicity in the murder of Jews a thousand times during the Nazi period, he was sentenced to five years in prison - the sentence was never legally valid.jjhu.

The convicted as a Nazi war criminal John Demjanjuk has died in a nursing home in the Bavarian resort of Bad Feilnbach near Rosenheim. The 91-year-old, who for decades led a discreet middle-class life, was one of the last Nazi criminals who were responsible for their actions. In May 2011, the Ukrainian was born in Munich, was convicted for complicity in the murder of Jews a thousand times to five years in prison . Yet he was not in custody -the court lifted the arrest warrant on the grounds of proportionality to the time being. His debt is now never be answered conclusively legal: lawyers and prosecutors had appealed the verdict, the next step would have the Federal Court must decideIn a tough process evidence the Munich District Court and a half years had fought for truth and justice. Due to Demjanjuk’s poor health was allowed only two 90 minutes a day to be negotiated, a process set to burst days, because the defendant was not fit to stand trial . In the process, he remained silent on the allegations.

In the end, however, proved to the judges: Demjanjuk was a guard in the 1943 Sobibor death camp and had there been of aid in the murder of at least 28 060 Jews guilty. The camp had been established only for the systematic killing of people. Those who did duty there is automatically part of the killing machine was. Demjanjuk had been given the opportunity to escape.

About 30 relatives of victims were plaintiffs in the process, she had vehemently demanded a conviction. It was not about punishment but about justice. Demjanjuk’s lawyers had argued the other hand, always, it is not even proven that the defendant was ever in Sobibor. And even if He does not only concrete fact must be provedDoubts about the guilt Even in the situation of non-German guards were many doubts. Historians are skeptical about whether these men, which were received as a war prisoner of the Nazis on the offer of collaboration, really would not risk their lives to flee. It is not likely that the young Ukrainian who at that time bore the name Ivan, was happy to have gone to war: on a collective farm he had a good job as a tractor driver, as he had in 1940 as a 20-year-old to the Red Army.

In 1942, he fell into German captivity, died in the millions of Soviet prisoners. Apparently he decided to cooperate with the Germans, was trained at the Trawniki SS camp and was used in Sobibor. As the main evidence, an SS identity card number is valid with the 1393rd “Abkommandiert 27/03/43 at Sobibor,” it says.

After the war, Demjanjuk filed a so-called “displaced person” and thus practically a Nazi victims. In 1952, he was able to leave with his newly formed family to the United States. Its possible Nazi past was not known, although in the former location of exit papers as including “Sobibor” stated. In the U.S., he took the name John, and worked as an auto mechanicFive years on death row Decades later came to suspect Demjanjuk could be “Ivan the Terrible” of Treblinka have been. In 1986 he was extradited to Israel in 1988 because of the complicity in the murder of more than 800,000 Jews were sentenced to death. Five years he sat on death row – 1993, the Supreme Court of Israel on the verdict. The judge questioned whether she really had convicted the right perpetrator.

He returned to his family in Seven Hills, Ohio. But unexpectedly, the Central Office took for the elucidation of Nazi Crimes in Ludwigsburg on the case again. In May 2009, Demjanjuk, the U.S. had again deprived of citizenship, deported to Germany. Pictures of deportation, which he sometimes went in a wheelchair, sometimes in the ambulance to show to the world.

After the verdict, the authorities were looking desperately for a place to stay to the old, sick man, despite cancellation of the warrant, he was allowed as a stateless person does not return to his family. Finally took the nursing home in Bad Feilnbach to as “severe need of care.” Demjanjuk is to be buried in Germany and at state expense: Even the dead can not travel without a passport.

Live concerts involved the band playing behind a rising and falling wall - the film presents the story in its bleakest vision of all.

FILM REVIEW PINK FLOYD THE WALL 1982

The greatest of all concept albums deserved a major movie, and Alan Parker directed it perfectly in this awesome, rather depressing classic.

The film works for maintaining a narrative that stops the film simply becoming a series of pop / rock videos. The story tells of Pink, a depressed youth with a domineering mother, and haunted by his father’s death in the Second World War.

His mother drives away his girlfriends in order to possess him to her, his teachers mock his creative streak and brutalize him, provoking the album and film’s best-known song, Another Brick In The Wall Part Two with its anti-education refrain.

Drifting into drugs and intense introspection, Pink’s nervous breakdown sees him building an impenetrable wall around himself, which has been seen also as a barrier others use to keep him contained. The Wall also reflects the divisions and entrapments of society.

Pink’s madness drives him to become a neo-fascist, becoming the very kind of Nazi his father fought and died to stop. His violent rampage ultimately gets Pink arrested and his wall is torn down by court order – we know nothing of his fate beyond that. Has he been killed, imprisoned, cast into an insane asylum/ Cured? What of the society that made him what he is?

The songs are as potent as on the album itself and the animation sequences by Gerald Scarfe, with armies of marching hammers representing the right wing political extremism are unforgettably chilling.

Bob Geldof is superb in a largely mimed and silent role, especially in his brutal metamorphosis into a new Hitler. There is also some fine blink and you’ll miss them cameos, notably Bob Hoskins, as the rock group manager who makes Pink perform even after his sickness and in his transformation into a new fascist.

Some scenes are incredible. Pink’s school days and the teacher who humiliates him for writing romantic poetry, and refuses him the pudding for not eating his main course meat. The Vera Lynn song subverts the traditional welcome home and promise of peace offered in her own songs, and the image of Pink turning Nazi, shaving his eyebrows, slicing off his nipples, etc, is scary. The shots of him kicking non-Aryans, homosexuals and others he sees as undesirable out of the concert hall is chilling, but the viewer feels as if we are somehow making him into this monster ourselves. It makes for a very bleak and unsettling film.

A few songs are added to the film, which are not on the album, notably When The Tigers Broke Free, which deals with the battle of Anzio and its impact on Pink due to his father being there.

Geldof sadly made few other films, as his performance in The Wall is terrific, though Geldof’s importance in the Band Aid / Live Aid charity projects took him in a very different and invaluable direction in life.

Pink Floyd’s album was presented by a host of cover artists at a special concert in Berlin amidst the rubble of the downed Berlin Wall, giving the songs a cheerful optimistic air of optimism the album and film never allowed for – the concert plays to one single moment – The Wall coming down. The album sees that as being as tragic as it’s rising given that the man trapped on the other side of the Wall is destroyed along with it. The Wall as seen coming down in Berlin was a symbol of new freedom.

Bowling For Columbine (Documentary)
Marilyn Manson Interview Analysis
Oral Script
Approximately five minutes.

-video-

“Some will be so brash to ask if we believe that all who hear Manson tomorrow night will go out and commit violent acts.

The answer is “no.”

But does everybody who watches a Lexus ad go and buy a Lexus? No. But a few do.”

Does anyone know where that excerpt is from?

Hello and good morning everyone, my name is Ophelia*,

And my name is Jessica*.

And we are going to analyse Michael Moore’s interview with Marilyn Manson.

How is Michael Moore Trying to position his viewer in this scene?

We will begin by talking about filmic techniques used in “Bowling For Columbine”.

The cuts between the Marilyn Manson interview and the speech by the anti-gun lobbyist (also known as the guy in the blue shirt talking about buying a Lexus at 15:20) create bias against the people who so strongly believe that it was Marilyn Manson who caused the shootings at Columbine, solely because the killers listened to his music.

One could say that the killers drank water. Even Adolf Hitler drank water. And, therefore, by the logic of these people, water should be prohibited.

In other words, it makes those people appear illogical, seeing as Marilyn Manson, daresay, has some good, insightful points compared to the people essentially claiming that: “Marilyn Manson is the bane of all society” through the notion that his music promotes hate, violence, and, well, Columbine-like behaviour.

While what Marilyn Manson is saying is deep, enlightening and wise; however, the way he is shown, and the way he presents himself (i.e. one leg on the couch) contradicts this. This could be identified as a juxtaposition.

Again, the eye-level shot, as shown here, accentuates Michael Moore’s attempt at trying to make you, the viewer, relate with Marilyn Manson; to humanize him, and make him seem more real. It doesn’t alienate the reader, like the scene with the camera looking up at the blue-shirted guy: this, in a way, makes the anti-gun lobbyist look like an antagonist.

A voice-over was used to create a sense of irony: scenes of innocent children eating apples (and looking cute in general) are played whilst Michael Moore talks about how dangerous and vile children truly are, and how menacing they are to society.

BIAS:

Does this scene create bias?

Needless to say, Marilyn Manson is notorious for being a bad influence on society in general – especially children.

Through this interview, one can tell that Marilyn Manson is not, in fact, the maniac that his style of music (and the media in general) make him out to be – Marilyn Manson is a human, not a monster. This part of the documentary seeks to make people not stand for Marilyn Manson, however, it seeks to make the viewer understand him and make him more relatable.

The entire set-up of this scene is to make it emotive – while the scene appears to be objective, and tries to place the viewer in a position in which they are indifferent; we are human. Most of us would veer towards the side of Marilyn Manson, who is very articulate, and offers some insightful points on the reasons as to why Columbine happened – the irony of how people blame him, rather than someone far more influential; such as the president.

In some sense, Marilyn Manson is right; the killers in Columbine weren’t cared for: they were not seen – their voices not heard. If people had listened to them – if they had their troubles heard, and their opinions expressed, then maybe the tragedy at columbine wouldn’t have happened.

Michael Moore is very effective at making his documentary seem objective, when they are, in actuality, pumped with loaded connotations and subtle or maybe not so subtle meaning.

I hope you enjoyed our presentation, thank you for listening.

Explaining Hitler's strange rise to power.

How is it possible that a man barely surviving on the streets can reshape his life and end up ruling Germany? Some think it was luck. Others, including the ex-Führer himself, believe he was persevered by a divine force. No matter how Hitler became a National ruler of immense power, we know one thing; He did.

After Hitler’s mother’s death, Hitler roamed the streets aimlessly for four consecutive years. Finally, his lack of living prompted him to enlist in the armed forces, beginning his political career. Hitler’s disposition didn’t mirror his fellow soldiers’ in any way. While they were out drinking, smoking, and womanizing, he lingered in the trenches, reading and arguing politics, making every move a productive one. The higher ranks took notice to how well rounded Hitler was, and he quickly advanced up the armed forces hierarchy.

Hitler’s determination pushed him into the most powerful rank in all of Germany, but what puzzles me are the specific events within these years. Hitler could be scratched and bruised, but never seriously injured. For example, he was given the hopeless job of running messages through cross-fire during battle, an extremely short-term business he managed to make long-term.

A strange theory Hitler and his comrades compiled illustrated the picture of Hitler being protected by a god-like force. At first, I thought of it as completely irrational, but the evidence compelled me to think differently. During a minor shelling, which happened frequently in the battle field, Hitler noticed and obeyed a strange voice telling him to leave. Within hours the trench he just retreated from was massively bombed, killing every soldier inside. Hitler also kept a picture of his “savior” on his desk throughout his ruling, an Englishman in World War I who had a clear shot on Hitler retreating back to his trench, but didn’t take the opportunity because he was sick of the fighting.

The evidence may have holes, and no matter how much we have, we can’t come to a definite conclusion if a heavenly being altered Hitler’s life. Out of millions of soldiers, one has to arise in a single piece, stronger than the rest. Whether Hitler was influenced supernaturally or just by chance, the facts support an interesting story.
