Varian Fry helped thousands of people in the period of WW2. He helped these people get out of France as Hitler was destroying it. This is the story of what he did, and how he was recognised to be one of the Righteous Among the Nations, a very high title given to Gentiles who compassionately helped Jews.

In June 1940, Germany had a stunning victory over France. The Nazis had control over Paris, and many other parts of France. According to the armistice agreement, the French had to hand over all those that the Gestapo (the Nazi Police) wanted. Many tens of thousands of Jews and Anti-Nazis were in grave danger.

The ERC (Emergency rescue committee) which was started in New York sent a man called Varian Fry over to France, because the president’s wife had allowed 200 refugees to come into the country.

Two months after the German victory, at the age of 32, Varian Fry arrived in Marseilles, and started writing to those on the list of 200. Very soon, he realized that there were far more than 200 that needed help. In less than a day of his arrival in France, he had totally committed to helping Jews and other refugees get out of the country. The Americans would not let him take any more refugees, so he decided to work independently. If Fry was caught he would have been arrested. But nothing stopped him.

He joined some other people, some refugees, others not, and together they helped 50+ people per day. He even paid substantial amounts to his workers. In her memoir, Miriam Davenport Ebel (one of those who helped him) wrote “He could only pay me 3,000 francs a month, 750 a week in other words. He seemed to think that very little; to me it was riches. It was the salary of a lycée professor, more than twice that of a saleslady”

Varian helped the refugees in many, many ways. He smuggled many of them to America disguised as soldiers, and enlisted a cartoonist to create forge documents. He also created fake visas to many different countries, including Czechoslovakia, Spain, Mexico, and others. Day after day after day he kept coming to the office he had rented and helping more people. Guggenheim wrote: “The American Government was perpetually trying to get him to go back to America to avoid difficulties with the Vichy Government. However, he stuck it out to the bitter end.”

By December, the French finally arrested him after 3 months of solid work. He was arrested, and kept on a prison ship in the Marseille harbor. But he soon got back to his work and kept persevering and pushing forward, whatever the risk. Nothing could stop him now. He remained until August 1941, 1 year after he had started, when he was forced to return to America. Among the people he saved were Marc Chagall, Siegfreid Kracauer, Max Ernst and Jacques Lipchitz.

Once he got back home, sadly his friends and colleagues that he had before his trip disliked him and avoided him. He lived in America making a living as a Latin teacher until 1967, when he died at the age of 60. Varian Fry truly was a great man and definitely deserved a lot of thanks and recognition.

In 1994, 27 years after his death, the Israeli foundation called Yad Vashem awarded the title Righteous among the Nations. There are many, many reasons why this occurred.

Firstly, Varian was a Gentile (a non-Jew). He was from America and lived in New York. Yad Vashem does not award the title to Jews, as they were expected to help other Jews anyway.

Also, the MFA website, the Israel Ministry of Foreign Affairs, states that one of the criteria the recognition of the righteous is based on is “Aid was extended by non-Jews in situations where Jews were helpless and threatened with death or deportation to concentration camps.” Varian Fry assisted or smuggled out of France over 4000 Jews and refugees, who claimed that they were in great danger. While some of them could have been lying and weren’t in danger, a large percentage of them were telling the truth and were actually being hunted down by the Gestapo. Although he wasn’t sure who really needed help, he assisted everyone that asked. He saved countless numbers of lives.

Fry also deserved the title because he knew his life was at great risk while doing this. The police were always trying to catch him, and helping the great numbers made it hard to keep the operation a secret. He eventually did get arrested and after that deported back to America.

Fry also wanted or asked for no reward whatsoever. Fry said, “I stayed because the refugees needed me.” This quote shows that Fry did it for the Jews and not for the reward. He described departure from France: “It was grey and rainy as I boarded the train. I looked out of the windows and innumerable images crowded my mind. I thought of the faces of the thousand refugees I had sent out of France, and the faces of a thousand more I had had to leave behind”. Fry didn’t want to leave France at all. He wanted to keep helping the Jews, even if it gave him no reward.

Also Fry did not nominate himself for the award, but someone else did. In fact, he probably did not even know about the award, because the foundation was started only 4 years before his death. We know about his work from the memoirs of the people he worked with, including Miriam Davenport Ebel, and by some people he saved. Miriam wrote about Fry As it turned out, a better man could not have been chosen for the job. Committed, self-righteous, and publicly imperturbable, Also photos were taken of him doing the work and many talked about his work. There is strong evidence of Varian Fry’s kindness.

Varian Fry truly deserved his title of Righteous. He was a Gentile, he saved over 4000 Jews, he knew his life was a risk, he accepted no reward, and there is so much proof.

Although Varian Fry was dead when he was awarded Righteous, he received the official certificate with his name he also received the medal. A tree was planted in his honor by his son in 1996 and his name was inscribed in the official memorial garden. Warren Christopher, a U.S state secretary, posthumously apologized to Fry about the American’s bad treatment towards him at the ceremony. He was the first American to ever be awarded Righteous among the Nations. 3 Americans have been honoured (Martha & Waitsill Sharp were the others.) 21,000 have so far been awarded.

As well as this, he was awarded the Chevalier of Legion de’ honour by the French Government soon before he died.

He saved over 4000 people for absolutely no reward at all, and those people would have had children and grandchildren. He is an absolutely amazing, exceptional and compassionate man.

Image via Wikipedia

There is a spear in the Imperial Treasury of Vienna of the Royal Palace. This spear is said to have pierced the side of Jesus and to contain nails from the cross he was crucified on. It is also part of the Austrian Imperial Insignia that includes crowns and jewels. The spear is nine inches long, made of iron and wood with a 14th century partial gold casing. Early chroniclers said it contained nails in its hollowed centre, but it is in reality, a long iron pin held by wire. There are small brass crosses on the iron that may mark the nails in the iron. Historians and archaeologists say that the spear dates to the 8th century.

Medieval emperors claimed that the spear performed miracles and was responsible for their winning battles. Kings of the region thought the spear belonged to the Roman soldier Longinus, the man reputed to be there at the crucifixion. Or it may have belonged to St Mauritius, the 4th century martyr, who had also been a Roman soldier (of the Emperor Diocletian).

In the late 19th and early 20th there arose a fascination in Europe in regards to the Imperial Insignia. Wagner made the lance an integral part of Parsifal, his last opera. In 1933, Willy Liebel, the new mayor of Nuremburg, asked the Nazis to bring the Insignia to his city as a way of demonstrating the German-ness and heritage of the Reich. He played on Hitler’s dislike of the monarchy for dissolving the Empire and betraying the German people with this action. Leibel got his wish.

In March, 1938, Austria was annexed by Nazi Germany in one of the first steps to recreate the German Empire. In September, the Imperial Insignia was crated up and sent to Nuremburg to be placed on public exhibition. Once war began, the Insignia was placed in secret bomb shelters. Only four persons knew of the location, including Liebel. On the 20 April 1945, Nuremburg was devastated by Allied bombing and Mayor Liebel committed suicide. By now a myth had arisen that the Nazis hid the spear to contain its magical powers for Germany and to keep it from falling into enemy hands. Allied forces finally located the hiding place of the Insignia in September. German lawyers tried to keep the Insignia in Nuremburg, but the collection was returned to Vienna, Austria by the US in 1946 and put on display.

The legends of Nazi interest in magical things would have died then if not for Trevor Ravenscroft. Ravenscroft wrote, in 1973, The Spear of Destiny. He was a journalist who claimed that Hitler was intrigued by the occult and inspired by Parsifal. He said that Hitler visited the museum in Vienna with an eye to obtaining the Holy Lance as part of his place to conquer the world. He also said that Hitler committed suicide just as the US found the lance in Nuremburg. His source was Walter Johannes Stein, a man who claimed to have met Hitler and who claimed Hitler once had a cope of Parsifal. Stein said the Reich higher-ups went into trances to relive historical events and that Hitler believed himself to be a reincarnation of Kingsor, a character from the opera.

All the myths of Hitler’s search for magical antiquities are false. But they are so compelling they have become accepted as fact and basis for books and two of the Indiana Jones films.

The sequence in the bunker when Hitler's Generals have to bring him bad news is a film classic. Not even Sir Alex Ferguson can rant like Hitler - especially when he's told about Liverpool selling Torres and buying Andy Carrol.

Hitler does not take well to the signing of Andy Carrol. He’s got bad hair for one thing – and bad hair is his thing! Calm down, calm down is what those generals need to be saying to this scouse Hitler.

But they daren’t. So he rants on about how Carrol might be going to prison, how he’ll go after their women. $45m for Carrol, he could have got David Silva, Ronaldo for that.

So how would Hitler react to news that there are plans to swap Carrol for Manchester City’s Tevez. He would go absolutely off the scale. Who is going to pay $250k a week to someone who refuses to play and shoots off to Argentina for 11 weeks? Argentina – that’s where half his SS men are hiding, the cowards!

Back to reality – and imagine how Liverpool manager Kenny Dalglish would react when his directors told him they planned to swap Carrol for Tevez. “Did you not hear me telling the world on TV what a good player Carrol is? What part of NO do you not understand? We’ve just won the game because of Carrol, you xxxxwits!”

“Do you not know that Tevez is mental, absolutely mental. He’ll destroy my team, the one I’m building up so we can win something – not lose because he won’t get off the bench and play! Have you no brains at all? Those other two, Hicks and Gillette had more sense than you and they nearly bankrupted us”

Well , that might be Kenny’s reaction, who knows? Back to Hitler, how would he react when he’s told the Italian Mancini wants to spend another $70M on new players. “Mancini! You might as well tell me about Mussolini. $70M and the last one he bought, that Balotelli lets fireworks off in his bedroom, acts like a 2 year old and gets suspended for kicking someone in the head. I’ll tell you what I’ll do to that Balotelli. He goes the same way as Mussolini – I feed him to the United fans and they hang him upside down from a lampost!”

But the best scene of all has yet to be filmed. That’s Hitler and Arsene Wenger going at it when Hitler tells him he wants to see some new tactics. “Long ball, that’s what we want. None of your namby pamby passing games here. We need some steel, not your fancy French boys with their hair tied up like a girl.”

“Where has that got us? You’ve won nothing Wenger, We’re going to spend spend spend – and not one penny will be on your fancy French players, got that, idiote?”

Ah we can all dream, can’t we?

Never-before-seen photographs have emerged from Adolf Hitler’s personal photographer, giving a first time look at Hitler’s Berlin apartment and Bavarian estate.

The Mirror reports that the photographer Hugo Jaeger was one of the few photographers working with color photography at the time and was granted access to Hitler’s living and study quarters, showing artwork and furnishings estimated to be worth millions even in pre-adjusted dollars. These pictures were taken in the two years leading up to the beginning of World War II.

It is rumored that Jaeger took as many as 2,000 photographs of Hitler and his possessions. but, in 1945 Jaeger is thought to have hid the photographs in a leather suitcase. As Life magazine reported:

In 1945, when the Allies were making their final push toward Munich, Jaeger found himself face to face with six American soldiers in a small town west of the city. During a search of the house where Jaeger was staying, the Americans found a leather suitcase in which Jaeger had hidden thousands of color photo transparencies. He knew he would be arrested (or worse) if the Americans discovered his film and his close connection to Hitler. He could never have imagined what happened next.

Then Jaeger allegedly buried some of the pictures in 12 twelve glass jars outside Munich, returning to retrieve them in 1955. But who really knows

The connection between animal cruelty, the mentally disabled, and the Holocaust.

I am a vegan, which means I try not to eat or use anything which comes from or harms animals. In a broader sense it means I am committed to principles of nonviolence and a belief in the inherent value of all living things, especially those which, like us, can love and feel pain or sorrow.

I have two articles to share with you today, which might not seem related at first. But bear with me.

The first one, from MSNBC, was about three people who were keeping four mentally disabled adults chained up in a basement with only a jug of orange juice and some buckets to go to the bathroom in. Looking at the 200+ comments on the article, people were pretty outraged and disgusted at this crime, some saying the criminals should be treated the same way as they treated their victims.

Once upon a time, the mentally handicapped were not so well thought of in society, nor so well protected. Once upon a time, limits on a person’s mental functioning also meant limits on the worth of that person’s life. It’s wonderful to see that this is, for the most part, no longer the case. The acceptable viewpoint in society is that the mentally disabled are real people who deserve protection and love. Varying levels of intelligence have no real influence on our judgment of the worth of fellow human beings. We see what these criminals did as unacceptable, perhaps even more despicable because their victims were childlike and vulnerable. Exploiting the disabled for one’s own purposes is generally agreed to be wrong.

Will there be a time when the same can be said for animals? People justify exploiting animals because human beings have a higher intellectual capacity than other animals. Smart adult animals have about the same mental capacity as human children… probably roughly similar to what these adult victims have. Animals are vulnerable and childlike in many ways. But we see them as inferior because of having less mental capacity. So, it’s okay for us to lock them in concrete or steel enclosures for extended periods of time, letting them live in their own waste, without regard for their emotional health, without regard for their physical suffering. Because they’re not as smart as we are. And there’s money to be made off them.

Why is it different? Because we’re human, and they’re not? Is it just because we only look out for our own kind? How is that so different from saying it’s okay to enslave people of other races, because we’re white, and they’re not?

Well, some people get outraged when they see videos of abuse at meat, egg, and dairy farms… but they don’t believe that this sort of thing happens all the time. They think it’s just an isolated incident… they say the individual person beating the animal should be arrested, and this is often true, but there’s more going on than just one case of a single psychotic farm worker. They can’t see, or else choose to ignore the fact that it’s the industry itself which is encouraging this abuse. It’s the way we think about animals. As objects. As inferior because of intelligence, because of a different physical shape or color… or something.

I wish there were some way to open people’s eyes, and get them thinking. What is the difference, really?

The other thing I read today was a post from the Action for Animals newsfeed on my facebook page. As much as I dislike bringing up the Holocaust…. It talks about how some people didn’t want to believe that the concentration camps of the Holocaust were real, and that it was just individual, evil officers in isolated incidents of abuse. Looking back now, most people agree that the concentration camps were real, and that thousands of people died there, people who were seen as inferior. It was the way that people thought about the Jews, the mentally disabled, and other “Others” which brought about this black mark in history.

The beginnings of this kind of tragedy still live inside of all of us. Any time we think of another living being as inferior, as an object which can be disposed of at our whims, which has no inherent value in itself… we are echoing the root cause, the spirit of the Holocaust.

So I invite you to read it, and think about it. It’s not very long. Just think about it. What is the difference? Is there one?

The Article: We Can’t See The Truth Through Rose-Colored Glasses.

Madonna's new film about the Duke and Duchess of Windsor is entitled W.E. after the way they signed off letters to each other, W for Wallis, and E for Edward. Her new album is called MDNA, but what is that referring to?

When Madonna announced the title of her new album she created a Twitter buzz – which was obviously the idea. But what does MDNA stand for? It could be Madonna – DNA - which makes sense. Or it could be after an active ingredient of Ecstasy, not a bad choice for a club album. Who knows?

Peacock – or Turkey?

What is certain is that critics are certainly not in ecstasy over her new film, W.E. She has yet to make a breakthrough film and it’s not going to be this one. The subject is the unfulfilled lives of the Duke and Duchess of Windsor. Critics agree the film looks beautiful with its art deco styling, Dior frocks and Cartier jewellery - but they don’t like the complicated storyline. The couple’s story is intertwined with the life of another Wallis and the device doesn’t work. One critic agrees the styling is terrific but goes on to say “This is a turkey that dreams it’s a peacock.” Ouch!

The tragedy of the couple’s life together was that he gave up the throne of England to marry her, then failed to find another role and they spent their days together in gilded exile, wondering what to do next.

The controversy that stayed with them was their relationship with Hitler in those dramatic pre-war years. They were both impressed by Hitler because he seemed to a defence against the threat that worried European aristocracy most – the rise of communism. There was also anti semitism throughout the upper reaches of society so Hitler filled a role there too.

The Windsors were not alone in their admiration of Hitler. Many British politicians on the right thought he should be appeased, allowed to carry on his policies of re-arming and the takeover of neighbouring territory. The hesitation to move against Hitler, helped along by the attitude of people like the Windsors, gave him the time he needed to gain strength militarily.

The hesitation was fatal, and led to the second world war which the Windsors spent in exile in the Bahamas. He was given the title of Governor but the idea was to keep him out of sight and unheard.

After the war the Windsors settled in Paris. The Royal family would not let them return to Britain. The present Queen’s mother was bitterly against them because his resignation forced her husband into a role he was not suited for, King of England. The award winning film The Kings Speech deals with his problems.

Madonna’s film about the Windsors will be a reference point for the lifestyle but fails to deal with the biggest event of all. Their relationship with Adolph Hitler – the 20th century’s great mass murderer.

Which of these three is the worst tyrant in the history of the world? Using the allegory, Animal Farm by George Orwell, this paper explains the savagery of all three and leaves you to decide which is the worst of all time.

Tyrannical leaders similar to Napoleon led their countries into times of war, despair, and economic depression, and during these times the people’s quality of life deteriorated significantly. Although they may differ in their methods used to rise to power, dictators such as Adolf Hitler and Muammar al-Qaddafi abused their political power and forcibly oppressed their citizens to make irrational decisions that brought harsh repercussions.

First used by the Ancient Greeks, the term tyrant commonly refers to a violent, ruthless, and unreasonable ruler who independently gains absolute control over his nation and uses a multitude of different strategies to gain supporters which become loyal to the tyrant (Tyrants). Under this definition, Napoleon of Animal Farm can easily be proven to be a tyrannical mastermind as he also came to power by force rather than election. In addition, he exercises the use of propaganda with the help of Squealer to trick the less intelligent animals into believing that conditions were improving as they were obviously becoming much worse than before Napoleon ruled. Much like this method, some politicians may use false promises of restoring peace, granting freedom, or solving economic problems to procure a large number of followers (Tyrants). This utilization of misinformation and trickery is simply one of many tactics which tyrants employ to increase their authority and control. After coming into power, by using the manipulation of propaganda and the blind loyalty of many supporters, a tyrant can pass his or her own rules or amend existing ones to further establish their dominance over the people. Most of the time, the new regulations would only benefit the oppressive ruler and ultimately cause the circumstance of life for common people to plummet (Tyrants). In the course of history, infamous authoritarians such as Adolf Hitler have used these tactics to assert themselves as tyrants and hurled their nations into times of anguish and hardship.

Early in his life, Hitler became intrigued with the ideas of anti-Semitism and mass political manipulation. These beliefs are what enabled him to quickly escalate his social status until he created the Nazi party in 1932 and received enough recognition that President Hindenburg appointed Hitler as chancellor (Adolf). He made great use of his enormous support base by eliminating all other political rivals and then appointing himself as Fuhrer when the president finally died (Thomson). During charismatic and motivational speeches, Hitler made promises to fix the economic problems Germany was faced with from the depression, (promises which he would not keep). He exploited these fabricated assurances to keep the nation loyal while established his own police force and an immense system of propaganda, which allowed him to achieve complete control (Adolf). With these in effect, Hitler was free to do as he pleased while the people were unaware of his decisions, causing very little opposition. As the economy remained in a global depression, Hitler had no way of restoring stability and therefore he blamed Jewish people as a scapegoat for all the complications which he could never fix. His Nazi party which he created to gain many of his followers supported this nationalist plan, and the persecution of Jews throughout Germany soon ensued (Thomson). Using his propaganda system, Hitler convinced the people of Germany that they would need to prepare for war, and then six million unemployed citizens were put to work. The erratic decision for Hitler and his brainwashed army of Nazi soldiers to invade many nearby countries in Europe caused world a war to be waged on Germany. As Hitler and his army campaigned across Europe, conquering huge amounts of territory, he employed his “final solution” plan to imprison and kill all the Jews in each new land he took under his control (Adolf). This had major effects on the people as the Green Police shut down all Jewish businesses and worked to instill fear in the citizens. As Hitler and the Nazis made their way into the Soviet Union, they were faced with such heavy opposition from the Red Army that he recruited everyone from young boys to old men into battle with very little training (Thomson). As many people began to see how Hitler’s plans were causing conditions to sink tremendously, assassination attempts were conducted by some of his highest military officers. This internal disunity caused enough turmoil for the American soldiers to invade Germany, eventually conquering Berlin and brought the war to an end (Adolf). Hitler’s inability to successfully come through with his plans shows how tyrants’ ineffective manners of authority lead to disastrous outcomes, not only for the tyrant, but for the entire nation.

While some rulers slowly evolve into tyrants using manipulation, others quickly establish themselves as corrupted and irrational leaders, but usually both ways cause a similar end result. Muammar al-Qaddafi, a pious Muslim and Arab nationalist, began plotting to overthrow the Libyan king as early as when he graduated from college. He entered the military and speedily climbed through the ranks, until in 1969 a group of officers and he seized the king’s monarchy and took control for themselves. Qaddafi was pronounced the commander-in-chief of armed forces and chairman of the new governing committee, the Revolution Command Council (Muammar). He immediately began employing his radical nationalist ideals by creating many harsh and restrictive rules which conveyed his personal Islamic principles. Policies such as the removal of foreign military bases, expulsion of Jews and Italians, monopolizing other countries’ oil resources and a ban on alcohol were approved without consensus from the Libyan citizens. This caused Libya to be partially isolated by those Qaddafi wronged and made the Libyan citizens suffer trade implications and some sanctions to be placed (Wallechinsky). After 1974, Muammar was becoming more known in the international prospect for his erratic and unpredictable actions. He began financing a wide range of terrorist organizations and had teams of Libyan agents go to murder exiles in foreign countries (Muammar). Qaddafi’s increasing terrorist activity brought growing conflict with the United States government and in 1986 British warplanes bombed several cities in Libya, killing or injuring multiple civilians while they were attempting to kill him (Wallechinsky). Other such acts which caused his people to suffer was the establishment of cleansing committees, which were originally intended to help people in the workplace be equal. Instead, the groups operated to identify and kill anyone who opposed Qaddafi and could make an attempt to revolt (Muammar). Muammar al-Qaddafi was quick to develop tyrannical behaviors and abuses his power to oppress his people, while only focusing on his own values, which causes the populace to suffer greatly.

While tyrants and dictators both establish themselves into rule by ways of deceit, half truths, and military utilization, the natures of their rules are radically different though they both result in deteriorated living conditions for the people. Such as how Hitler used the Great Depression to gain supporters and then caused World War II to destroy most of Germany. Similarly, Muammar Qaddafi overthrew the government using his military control and when he came into power he allied himself with terrorists, which brought forth destructive bombings on Libya. They both made unreasonable decisions which brought harm to their people when they were only focused on furthering their power and trying to accomplish personal goals.

An overview of The Battle of the Bulge.

The Battle of the Bulge took place between mid-December 1944 and January 1945. Leading up to the battle, Hitler tried to launch a surprise attack on the British-American armies in hopes of separating the British and American troops and seize the port of Antwerp by sending in German soldiers in U.S. uniforms who spoke fluent English to infiltrate American armies. These soldiers gave bad directions, changed road signs and cut telephone lines to cause confusion and managed to get the American troops pushed back to the Meuse River near Bastogne. It wasn’t until after General Anthony C. McAuliffe refused to surrender Bastogne that reinforcements were brought in and the attack on German troops began on December 16th, 1944 (DigitalHistory, n.d.).

On December 17th, 1944 an American battalion were caught by an SS force. The force captured 150 POWs. Roughly 80 of the men were shot and killed and their bodies were left behind. This became known as the Malmedy Massacre. Once news of the event spread the Allied forces ordered that all SS forces be killed on sight.

American forces began their first counterattack on December 23, 1944. The counterattack included the targeting from both sides on aircraft. After 20 days of fighting the Americans lost 460 aircraft while the Germans lost 277. The Americans were able to come back from the loss; however it left the German forces weakened. On January 7th, 1945 Hitler decided to end all offensive operations. The Battle of the Bulge claimed 70,000 to 81,000 American casualties, 1,400 British, and 60,000 and 104,000 German. More than 100,000 soldiers were claimed by the battle (DigitalHistory, n.d.).

In no particular order, this is a list of the 10 greatest mustaches, including ones that were famous for their appearance, and ones that were famous for what they stood for.

Mustaches have been a major part of human appearances for as long as heirachy existed in society. Careers have been made and broken based on the quality of a man’s facial hair (or lack thereof). I present you, the reader with my list of the 10 greatest mustaches of all time. This list reflects mustaches that are great not only for their appearances, but also how they contributed to their owners success in their fields, and in some cases, world events.

Tom Selleck

Best known for his role in Magnum, P.I., his iconic mustache saved the day countless times and always got the girl. His mustache gave him an unforgettable appearance and he may not have been quite the actor he was without it.

Hitler

This mustache is without a doubt among the most influential, albeit horrible, of all the mustaches of the 20th century. Hitler’s appearance demanded not only obedience, but also respect and unwavering loyalty from his subjects. Ironically, this style of mustache was made popular by Charlie Chaplin, because he thought it made him look more humorous. That brings us to…
Charlie Chaplin

Charlie Chaplin was a God of silent film. Being a professional comedian and entertainer, he created characters with his appearance that could be easily recognizable. His mustache provided a look that didn’t take itself too seriously, yet he was able to play a character that was an off take of Hitler in 1940’s “The Great Dictator”.
Stalin

Stalin’s mustache is what he wanted everyone’s image of the Soviet Union to be: Strong and Eternal. Among the greatest of world leaders’ mustaches, his provided an image of power and sophistication simultaneously. It worked quite well with his hair, I might add.
Teddy Roosevelt

Roosevelt and Taft were the only two U.S. presidents well known for sporting a mustache. Roosevelt takes the prize though because his mustache has the spirit of adventure. His mustache had been everywhere from the Badlands of Dakota to the Amazon Rainforest.
Hulk Hogan

Even though he’s a scary man, with eyes that would make you freeze in your tracks, and veins popping out every which way, it’s really the mustache that make’s Hulk Hogan such a fearsome figure. When he talks, something about the mustache amplifies the power of his death threats a thousandfold. His mustache was the last thing a lot of people saw before they blacked out.
Yosemite Sam

His mustache is as wide as he is tall. Enough said.
Michael Jordan/Martin Luther King

They’re like carbon copies of the same mustache, which is why they occupy the same spot. I must say that jordan’s appears more subtle, whereas King’s stands out a bit more.
Ghandi

Ghandi’s mustache definitely is a symbol of silent power and amazing resistance, yet I can’t take him too seriously because he is smiling like Bill Cosby.
