In the last decade, advances in medical science have helped people with HIV live and stay well longer. As a result of these positive breakthroughs, workplace issues have become more common.

During the early years of the HIV epidemic, returning to work after a diagnosis did not often happen. Because there were no early detection tests, many people were not diagnosed until after they developed multiple symptoms. Sadly, at that point many of them were too sick to return to work.

Today we are able to diagnose HIV much earlier and there are powerful medications available to help manage symptoms. This allows HIV positive men and women to often lead long, healthy, and productive lives. According to the United Nations Programme on HIV/AIDS (UNAIDS), the vast majority of people living with HIV are aged 15-49, and in the most productive part of their working lives. This fact has significant impact for both businesses and individual workers.

An employee is not required to disclose a diagnosis of HIV to their employer. However, because many HIV positive individuals will need special accommodations of some sort such as extra time away from work to seek medical care or treatment, many make the decision to inform their employer.

Employees who return to the workplace after an HIV diagnosis face many hurdles. The stigma of HIV can often result in discrimination which threatens the fundamental rights of the employee. An employee who is HIV positive is protected under the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). While this defines their legal right to protection against being fired due to a disability, it does not necessarily make it easier for HIV positive employees as they may still feel discriminated against by their peers because of the stigma associated with being HIV positive.

Despite global awareness and education, many people still feel uncomfortable working with an HIV coworker. HIV/AIDS cannot be transmitted casually from person to person, and an HIV positive employee is not a risk to anyone else in the workplace.

Many companies are now implementing an HIV/AIDS workplace policy which encourages ALL employees to support an inclusive and non-stigmatizing working environment, and provides guidance to supervisors and mangers on how to identify and mitigate discrimination in the workplace. Developing a policy such as this would be an initial step for any company that undertakes a commitment to address HIV/AIDS.

Lots of tears and sadness in this drama of devoted pediatrics nurse Susan Lansing (Spacek) who decides to become the foster mother of abandoned baby girl Annie, who’s been diagnosed as HIV-positive, the first HIV Positive baby ever in that hospital. Then Annie’s destitute birth mom (Parker), a former junkie dying of AIDS, resurfaces and decides she wants her daughter back and ends up moving in with Susan. Sputters into melodrama but good performances by strong women, including Plowright as the nanny and Merkerson as a concerned hospital social worker, who only wants what’s best for Annie. Based on a true story.

There is a fast ever-growing interest of a certain blog exposing the scandalous lives of Manila’s high society created by an Australian national, Brian Gorell. The site entitled “The Not So Talented Delfin DJ Justiniano Ocampo Montano II” is made against his ex-lover DJ Montano who allegedly stole his money.

(photo from Brian Gorell’s blog)

There can be more reasons apart from the listed below but I just decided my top five:

First it involves drugs, sex, gossips and rich people involving the Manila’s socialite, the elite ruling class. Almost the same factors of why soap opera are well-watched by its viewers is because of its dramatic tendencies. Gorell accused famous socialites such as female lifestyle writer of being coke addict, a male event organizer/ club owner of Embassy that operates as a “drug den” for the rich people.

Second, money + betrayal = revenge. That is how some people see this unfortunate incident. Gorell was dumped by Montano thus accusing him of stealing his money that supposedly to be used for their joint business venture, a restaurant in Boracay. In order to get back at Montano, he exposes the scandalous lifestyle of Montano’s socialite friends so that they will be the ones to force Montano to pay up the $70,000 to stop Gorell of writing libelous accusations about them.

Third, how anybody can’t sympathize with Gorell when his a self-confessed HIV positive who was being betrayed and stolen a big amount of money from her ex-lover? No one, almost everybody sympathize with him. Some people think that he can also be lying about his medical condition just to be pity upon. If he once in his life, has been a member of that “socialite” group he criticizes and deconstructs now, how can be much of a different from the other lying bitches and scumbags?

Fourth, are the ethical issues of blogs against libelous and malicious written accusations for a certain person. This incident provokes the media ethics about journalism and online media because there seems to be a blurry and no clear cut rules and regulations about the new media. What is the difference of accusing people and just by expressing your feelings and insights about personal predicaments? Almost everybody can access public blogs if you let them. If the intention is freedom of expression, who will safeguards the virtual community from facts from gossips, truthfulness from falsehood, from the good to the evil?

And lastly, the gender issues of Gorell and Montano, the sexual relations and intimacy. I am not sure though if Montano’s family knows about his sexual preferences but after this scandal they already have a clear picture by now. Presently, Gorell is into another relationship of another man whom he is happy, for the meantime?!

Hope not.

From hindsight, this can be simply described as a promising business venture that turned into a tragic ending. A sad gay love story and that is all there is to it.
