You know you’re a graduate student, so the joke goes, when your office is better decorated than your home and you have a favorite flavor of instant noodle. In most countries, a Ph.D. is a fundamental requirement for a career in academia. It is an introduction to the world of independent research, a kind of intellectual masterpiece, created by an apprentice in close collaboration with a supervisor. The requirements to complete it varies considerably between countries, universities and even themes. Some students will not have to spend two years working on a master’s degree or diploma. Some receive a stipend, while others will pay their own way. Some Ph.D. ‘Engaging research only, some require training and testing, and some require the student to teach students.

The dominant model of the economics of education is based on human capital theory. The central idea is that education is investment in business skills and knowledge to increase revenue, or provide long-term benefits, such as the appreciation of literature (sometimes called the cultural capital). An increase in human capital can follow the technological progress as the demand for qualified employees due to the need of their skills, literacy, both in understanding the processes of production or operating machinery. A 1958 study attempted to calculate the returns to additional schooling (the percentage increase in income earned by an additional year of schooling). Later, the desired results for the performance through different people and education.

Online classes are mostly not "distance learning", which often means the person who watches a lecture and completes the work at home. Online education today takes advantage of multi-media creations of interactive lessons and opportunities for collaboration among peers and library resources online to compete with brick and mortar colleges. Flexibility has greatly improved the ability of dedicated students to graduate from the college of their choice.

If you are looking to explore the career path of becoming a PhD in education, there are several job options that often have excellent employment rates with comparably higher salaries to that of those applicants with only a Masters or Bachelors. Becoming a “Doctor” will lend you to the top of the resume pile when applying to be a public school principal. However, don’t expect such service when applying for the top position of superintendent.

The decision to participate in the graduate school and how to obtain a PhD in education is important, and not made lightly or without consideration. A typical doctoral program take 5-7 years during which you will have completed about one quarter of graduate school life. Many areas of the training are not done, students then spend 2-4 years in postdoctoral training before the start of their career. Commitment to a Ph.D. also means some sacrifice. Graduate students are generally not well paid. You can add a personal debt. In relation to your peers, you can give up years of earnings. In addition, you sacrifice yourself, because the doctoral education is the "job" that requires a lot of hard work and perseverance.

While only a small percentage of teachers and academics strive to earn their PhD in educational philosophy, fewer still graduate with the honor. For some, the concept of the doctoral process is daunting, but as they say, anything worth doing is worth doing well. If your goal is to become a Doctor in the field of education, you must tackle a thesis and it must be defended in front of a panel of professors before you to can become one of their colleagues. Whether studying online for your degree or at a local university, the work remains difficult but rewarding.
