People who constantly blame others for the ills of life are at higher risk of developing disease.

Carsten Wrosch, Concordia University (Canada), analyzed the relationship between failures and bitterness about the quality of life.and noticed that some people manage to avoid resentment while others are marked by a constant feeling of resentment towards other.

To analyze in depth the phenomenon specialist noted that “the constant resentment can result in global feelings of anger and hostility that, when strong enough, can affect the physical health of people.”

Personal failure, say the specialists in human behavior, is a major cause of resentment, especially characterized by emotions of anger and recrimination. While repentance involves self-blame, resentment means blaming others for what happens to oneself.

“When this emotion is entertained for too long, the bitterness of deregulation predict biological patterns (a physiological impairment that affects the metabolism, immune responses and organ functions) and physical illnesses,” emphasizes Wrosch.

But this situation is positive with a solution. Wrosch ensures that you can prevent and alleviate resentment to find new ways to feel satisfied with their own objectives. If unable to meet the goals, then it is important to ignore the issue and start a project that is just as significant.

This process of engagement and re-commit is called self-regulation and Wrosch considered very important for mental health. “Any effective therapeutic intervention depends on the individual concerned find ways to self-regulate,” he said.

Sometimes it takes another extra feeling to overcome resentment. Wrosch stressed that when someone is really responsible for their own problems then the key to not hold on to anger is to forgive.

A brief history of criminology.

image via Wikipedia

To many people who are curious about the roots and origins of Criminology, Cesare Lombroso is considered known to be the proponents of the science, founding the Italian School of Positivist Criminology, he explored it and examined it from several angles so as to expose it. It was initially employed by a law professor in Italy, Raffaele Garofalo, who first used the Italian term for the word, criminologia. A French anthropologist additionally used the term around the same era as Garofalo, who established the term as criminology. There are some who believe that it’s possible that the study of bumps on a person’s skull, called Phrenology, could be a better mark of representation when it comes to the scientific origins of the term. Lombroso is considered to be the father of criminology as a result of of the many advances that he attempted to form in the sector. If not for him, criminology would possibly not be as developed as it’s today.

Over time, several totally different theories were composed as to what caused criminal behavior. These theories have their roots in biology, psychology, and society, to name some. Throughout history, by using these foundations for brand new theories, different institutions and schools of thought began to emerge. Through these totally different colleges of thought, the theoretical science of the criminal factor could be rationalized. People usually debate so as to try to define the explanation for crime, therefore that it might then be eliminated by solving the problem of what causes crime. By discovering and reacting to the cause that motivates the crime and perverse behavior, better steps of social control could be executed. Currently, we are gaining ability to control the symptoms of crime. For example, we have cops who catch criminals. When found guilty of the accused crime, the criminal can move to jail. That takes the criminal out of society. However, there are new felons coming out every day. The society learned how to deal with the symptoms, the individual criminals, however we have not yet totally figured out what stimulate or cause the criminal behavior.

Throughout the history of criminology, this is the major aim of the science. Since it’s a theoretical science, all of the theories that correspond to the subject cannot immediately be proven as accurate or inaccurate, merely theoretical. However, the continuous effort of individuals to idealize the workings of the individual and society have been reworked and re-outlined since the term was coined. If the history of criminology shows us anything, it is that the human nature to determine right from wrong and therefore the variations between individuals recognizing the distinction is just about a timeless theme, at least since its birth. By continuously researching and documenting the variables and changes within society and crime, individuals who are interested in learning about criminology can align the theories with the established information. After this is often done, it’s possible to sit down and analyze the concurrent factors to come up with the best action plan when it comes to evolving society to limit crime and intolerance in the best way possible.

Historically, the concept of abnormality was not a homogeneous and rigid notion. In stark contrast, views of abnormality related to the behavior of people varied consistently to the extent that the perception of the cause and essence of abnormalities in the behavior of people was absolutely different in different epochs. No wonder, the present concept of abnormal psychology is not only different but, to a significant extent, contradicting to the concept of abnormality, which was commonly accepted in the past epochs.

Naturally, as views of the concept of abnormality varied so did the treatment of people having certain deviations from the normal behavior. In fact, the word “treatment” can hardly be applied to the actions undertaken in the past to people suffering from deviations from the normal behavior under the impact of their mental health problems. In such a context, it is very important to trace the evolution of the concept of abnormality in the course of the development of human society, science and views concerning this problem, in order to understand the extent to which the definition of the concept of abnormality may be conventional and sometimes inadequate and irrelevant to the actual cause and essence of the abnormality.

First of all, the concept of abnormality is quite an arguable concept because it has varied in the course of time and even today there is no agreement among specialists on this concept. The main reason for such a diversity of views of the concept of abnormality may found in the definition of the concept itself, because the definition of abnormality is closely interrelated to the concept of a norm. What is meant here is the fact that the abnormality is traditionally perceived as a deviation from a norm, for instance, an abnormal behavior is the behavior that does not match socially accepted standards and norms of behavior. Paradoxically, such a definition of abnormality can be applied to all epochs and societies, though slight and insignificant variations are possible.

In such a situation, it is quite logical that the concept of abnormality was highly dependent on the socio-cultural environment and cultural context of the epoch in which this concept was developed and applied. Obviously, the existing norms and standards, as well as beliefs, defined the essence of the abnormality, its causes, essence and methods of the treatment of people having some abnormalities in their behavior and psychology. In this respect, it is possible to refer to the ancient epoch, when views and beliefs of people were substantially influenced by their perception of the surrounding world at large and human beings in particular. For instance, one of the prominent philosophers of the ancient world, Plato, insisted on the external origin of the abnormality in human’s behavior. To put it more precisely, he argued that the deviation from the norm, i.e. the abnormal behavior of people was provoked by evil spirits, who took possession over humans and provoked the abnormal behavior. At this point, people living in the ancient epoch basically agreed with Plato. Though they did not accept his idea that the abnormality was caused by “natural madness, usually caused by a disease” (Parker et al. 1995:92). In stark contrast, ancient philosophers and the general public believed that the abnormality is rather a punishment of an individual from the part of gods for his or her misbehavior or disrespect of gods, for instance.

This mystic view of the cause and essence of the abnormality was maintained in the later epoch, the Middle Ages, while the idea of Plato concerning the natural cause of the abnormality was unjustly rejected and it is only in the later epoch mental health problems were identified as the main cause of the abnormal behavior. At the same time, during the Middle Ages the shift had taken place in relation to the abnormality since the dominance of Christianity led to the interpretation of the cause of the abnormality as the fact of being “possessed by demons” (Hockenbury and Hockenbury 2003:112). In a way, the medieval demons may be compared to evil spirits of the ancient epoch. However, the dominance of Christianity and Inquisition resulted in the absolutely inhuman, from the contemporary point of view, treatment of people with abnormal behavior. These people were exorcised by the churches or even burned at the stake for possessing the demons (Hockenbury and Hockenbury 2003:132).

The Renaissance and Enlightenment stimulated the development of science and change in the attitude of people to the abnormality. During this epoch, humanistic principles had been introduced. Moreover, ideas of ancient philosophers, including Plato, were revived and reevaluated. As a result, the view of abnormality steadily grew closer to the contemporary scientific view of this problem.

However, it is only by the early 19th century the concept of abnormality had been changed consistently (King 1998:4). To put it more precisely, the idea of being possessed by evil spirits or demons was totally rejected, instead, the idea of natural causes, such as a mental illness, became commonly accepted. These ideas and views of the abnormality were developed further, but there were still certain differences in views. For instance, supporters of biological approach believed that the abnormality was provoked by illness and health problems on the biological level, i.e. the abnormality was viewed as some malfunction of human body (Hansell and Damour, 2005). Behavioral and psychological approach tended to focus on psychological and mental causes of the abnormality (Bennett 2003:94).

Nevertheless, in spite of existing differences, the attitude of people to those, who had the abnormal behavior, had changed dramatically. Since the abnormality was and still is viewed as an illness, people who have this problem are treated by healthcare specialist and receive essential assistance from the part of healthcare and social services as well as relatives who take care of these people. Moreover, asylums, which were created for the treatment of people with abnormalities, tend to disappear as the concept of the community treatment and integration grows more and more popular in regard to people with abnormality (Bennett 2003:97). As a result, today people with abnormality, if they are not socially dangerous, tend to be integrated in the normal, social life.

Our needs and wants.

Each and everyday new technology are being invented, new trends are started, but have we ever considered whether we really need the newest technology or to wear the latest trends?

As generations and generations pass we’ve noticed that people tend to throw away all of their devices once a new and better one comes along. Even if the device still works, they are too focused on getting the next new thing. Say if a brand new cell phone came out and it has all kinds of cool features. While many people still have their cell phones in good condition, they would still go out and buy this new phone. In the customers’ point of view, they just want the newest technology to satisfy their wanting. I mean who wouldn’t want a high speed phone with internet access where you have a roomful of space for memory, filled with a bunch of essential applications such as a calendar, alarm clock, map and more. People related to business dealings find consumerism a good thing, this is because when customers buy more products they gain more profit. It also keeps people employed since they need people to manufacture more of the selling product. Consumerism always contributes to local parks, roads, health care, school, and water and waste management. The more you buy the more tax is paid for those constructions but if we didn’t consume a lot then it meant that we wouldn’t have good roads, a good health care, etc. These all are examples of advantages towards consumerism, but like all issues there are always disadvantages.

Due to the huge amount of unnecessary waste, we’ve have been called the throw-away society. When we throw away items that are still useful we create more waste, much of this waste is made of out plastic which means that it will take hundreds of years before it decomposes. Some of these wastes are toxic which can pollute the surroundings it’s in. If we can learn to live with less, we’ll start to build up a better environment for our future generations. If we don’t and continue with this habitant, our earth may be damaged too much for us to fix it in the future.

I believe that consumerism has caused a huge impact on us and if it continues on people will act as if they can get whatever they want whenever they want. People wouldn’t be getting things just because they NEED it, it would be because they WANT it. This can cause a lot of damage to the earth. People need to acknowledge that some people in the world do that even have enough food for a day. If someone doesn’t want a used item or a piece of clothing they could donate to someone else that could use it. This way it doesn’t end up in the trash. Used technology and utilities can be recycled instead of thrown in the garbage. So instead of it ending up in the dump it can be used to form up another item.

If we put a more efforts into these situations, our future can be more environmentally friendly yet at the same time, the technology and trends are at a whole new level.

The Verstehen theory posits that the only reasonable manner in which human sciences can understand the meaning of social practices is from the inside as these practices are understood by the agents themselves.

Social practices involving seeral unique customs and traditions have contextual and even historical bases that are only appreciated by the people within that culture because they share the same beliefs and history. These practices, then, can be meaningless and absurd if seen by an outsider because of lack of understanding. In order for such practices to be given meaning, and be greatly understood, one has to submerge himself into a group’s way of life and look into its very core; the external manifestations are not always valid and are, most of the time, arbitrary.

It is very common for a person to think strangely of the practices in a different culture because he is not used to them. But, come to think of it, he also has his own practices that are “strange” to some. But, how come he doesn’t question it and takes his own traditions as normal? I think, human mind is conditioned to believe in something over time. When we grow up having certain practices, we take it as a part of our identity and we rarely question the norms. Although traditions are mostly beliefs and do not have factual bases, like rain dance and sun dance for some tribes, they have become sensible because of the meaning attached to them by the people and the practical reasons that are behind them.

Given these considerations, the Verstehen theory calls for an “empathic or participatory” understanding of a certain subject’s point of views by putting oneself into the situation, condition and circumstances surrounding the subject’s behavior. For example, we can never understand the culture of street children unless we immerse ourselves into their way of life. For many people, they are only perceived as beggars – they ask for food, money and a little attention. Perception is a selective and interpretative process of becoming conscious through once experience, and if we happen to have a bad experience concerning street kids, we are for sure to label them as “bad” unless we are to change our perception. Our way of perceiving things is mostly influenced by our personal biases. A way of understanding the behavior of street children is to use our emotions, feeling what they are feeling. If we know the motivations behind their rude behavior – like, not having a home and a complete family – we will know that they act so because they have a need to survive. Even our reason tells us that their behavior is somehow a natural instinct on their part.

Understanding human behavior also involves reconstructing the subject’s purposes, values and meanings through interpretation. In this case, knowing the history behind a group’s practices is very much needed. For instance, many find it amusing how Koreans give too much value to education – children even at the age of two or three start studying – and hardwork – employees working overtime and even on weekends. People just have to realize that Korea has had a very difficult and depressing past where people were very poor. And the only way for them to alleviate their sufferings was to study hard and work hard.

Most of the time, what we see is not always true and what we consider as fact in our culture is not always the same with another culture. Thus, it is very important that we explore beyond the surface. Although it is impossible to completely understand a different culture, it is still better that we attempt to widen our horizons.

What do you consider cold? Have you ever gone somewhere on a really nice day and suddenly felt cold? Are you aware there is more then one meaning behind this one statement? Did you know cold is beautiful too?

During the winter people often say “Baby it is cold out here” and are referring to the air around them, but there is more then one type of meaning for this grouping of words. As you get invitations to parties you will meet all types of people. Some of the most beautiful people give off coldness like an untouchable aura around them. Step into that aura and say hello and you can feel the chill emanating from them. Most people feel the aura before even getting within speaking range of the individual. Sometimes you may find people that exude coldness merely from their eyes when they look in your direction.

Remember some people have never had anything good happen to them during the Holiday Season so their cold winter attitude is normal for them. Many of them assume they can never experience a joyful experience during that time of the year. People that don’t know those individuals tend to keep away from them because, well let’s face it most human beings don’t like the cold.

In my most recent years, perhaps because of all of my experiences in the past I have been told that I appear to be angry, cold and untouchable. At first I thought it was a joke, but later as the years went by I’ve come to realize they were right. I can’t tell you if this aura comes with maturity or experiences or perhaps a little of both. What I can tell you is this:

Sitting in my living room sipping on a hot steamy cup of Amaretto I watched the rain. After the mail person left I opened my door to retrieve the mail and got hit with a blast of frigid wind, looking up at the roof I saw the ice cycles forming. For no particular reason the thought occurred to me that cold feeling must be similar to that of a baby being born. Like most people I have no memory of being born, but one could well imagine coming from a very warm place into a place that is at least ten or more degrees colder then its original warm place. I watched the ice cycles grow and after the rain stopped that night I saw the most wonderful sight. As the street lamp shined on the ice it sparkled like diamonds and fine crystals from the roof, trees and everywhere else the ice formed. I had seen ice before but this was a rare beauty I had never seen. In the sunlight everything sparkled like rare polished diamonds glistening from every direction; it even emphasized the greens and browns of the trees with an unmatchable brilliance. It stayed that way for days as it slowly melted away and the days became warmer.

My point is the cold and ice will eventually give way to genuine warmth but the rare beauty will remain in the heart forever. Don’t be afraid to be yourself around people that give off a cold aura because some of them are the most beautiful people around.

Respect is most important human behavior in our lives. The only rule is GIVE RESPECT AND GET RESPECT.

Give Respect And Get Respect

Respect is something everyone wants, and not many have but only few wants to actually give respect. Respect is the only thing that you have to get it to give it. Yes, respect is very important and the meaning is often not understood. Let’s look deeper into its meaning. What exactly is respect? The meaning of respect in the oxford dictionary is define as a ‘regard for our appreciation of the worth or value of someone or something.’ I think, respect goes far beyond this definition. Although many looks at respect as simply treating another person or thing with kindness but it is so much more than the, this word has many more different aspects. Respect can be shown through behavior and it can be felt.

The Holy Books also strongly emphasize the lesson of respect. Just like friendship, respect does not work one way, both people would have to show respect in order to gain each other’s respect. You cannot demand respect, it ahs to be earned. It can be earned by being a good person or doing something admirable. Respect plays an important role in our everyday lives. As children we are taught to respect our parents, teachers, elders, school rules, traffic laws, family, cultural traditions, other people’s feelings and rights, our country’s flag and leaders, our peers, the truth and people’s differing opinions. We may come to believe that, at some level, all people are worthy of respect. We may learn that jobs and relationships become unbearable if we receive no respect in them. There are many random examples of respect. When we go to school there is respect. When we go to a restaurant, there is respect. When you go to your family reunion, there is respect but day by day respect is becoming the cornerstone of our society, but why? People do not realize how important respect is; it is more than just that respecting others is the golden key to becoming a better human being.

Respect is ten times easier to lose then it is to gain. Respect can be lost in an instant one word, one decision or one action can loose a person their respect. It is hard for people to get a job if they are not respectable; it is hard for people who have a good reputation if they are not respectable. We all need and deserve to be respected. However, we cannot respect others when we do not respect ourselves. You should never take a person’s dignity because it is worth everything to them, and it is nothing to you. You should treat others as you want to them to treat you because what goes around comes around. When you are rude, put people down, talk negatively, or insult people, you are hurting your respect for yourself as well as for others. A person who wants a rose must respect the thorn and being brilliant is no great feat if you do not respect anything. I would like to say in end “Respect for ourselves guides our morals, respect for others guide our manners”.
