Northwest Plains Blizzard of 1888
On the 12th of January 1888 a blizzard labeled as the ‘Schoolchildren’s Blizzard’ killed 235 people, many of those victims were children returning home from school. The storm hit the Northwest Plains region of the United States with almost no warning, the temperature had been unseasonably warm until it plummeted by around 100 degrees (F) in just 24 hours.
Avalanches Were a Greater Danger Than The Enemy!
An avalanche thundered down a mountainside and killed hundreds of Austrian soldiers inside their barracks near to Italy’s Mount Marmolada on December 13th 1916. Over a period of several days in mid December of that year an estimated 10,000 Austrian and Italian soldiers would die as a result of avalanches and not in fighting with each other.
