You may have been a victim of identity theft and felt teh frustration of trying to correct the problem. It can be a long battle and money spent just trying to rectify the identity theft.

Identity theft is a very emotional crime for the victim. They may spent lots of time trying to correct the credit and contacting their banks because of fraudulent charges. This could be quite frustrating but I’m sure its more frustrating if you know who is committing such a crime but no one would help. What if they kept diverting your mail to a different address? What if you found out that your bank card was charged? You may start feeling helpless and angry because of the attacks you are receiving. You must fight back because if you don’t than they will keep doing it and others will feel exactly what you’re feeling.

Those who commit this type of crime feel that they are invincible. They believe that the law will do nothing or it will take so long that it wouldn’t matter anyway. You may want to put a whammy on them but don’t. They will get caught just not in your time frame. They will slip up and than the law will have enough evidence to take them in. If its say a mother in-law than she may just want to frustrate you. So what she has people helping her like those in the post office. You can get around that by writing every agency you know. So hold on a change is surely coming.

Identity thieves are a nuisance and it can take a long time trying to catch these bad guys. keep your head up and continue to make a difference. No one wants to be a victim of identity theft but it happens, especially in this bad economy. You must relax and do what is necessary to get your life back. Identity Thieves you won’t win!

Identity Theft - IRS Warns Public about Email Scams.

The IRS has been the topic of an email scam campaign. they’re informing the general public to be on the lookout for email indicating they’re returning from the Agency. Since the IRS doesn’t send unsolicited emails soliciting for your personal info, you want to assume these emails are written to trick you into giving out money and private info you must not be disclosing to the general public.

The IRS has noticed a rise within the range of scams. Since November ninety nine scams are identified. throughout the tax filing season, forty were identified. In June an extra twenty surfaced. several are originating outside of the u. s.. a number of the countries are Argentina, Aruba, Australia, Austria, Canada, Chile, China, England, Japan, Italy, Korea, Malaysia, Mexico, Poland, Singapore and Slovakia. Some have come back from the u. s..

The IRS won’t send you an email requesting personal info of any kind. they will not attempt to trick you into disclosing checking account numbers, pin numbers, or mastercard info. Since this info will be used for identity theft, you want to remember of everything you are doing on and offline.

If you provide out your personal info, it will then be used to steal your identity and maybe your money assets. The IRS has established an email box for you to send suspicious email you receive that seems to possess come back from the IRS. the e-mail address is : phising@irs.gov. The IRS can investigate your email to work out if it fits into the scam class.

If you expertise Identity Theft, the Federal Trade Commission includes a client net website at http://www.consumer.gov/idtheft/index.html. As in all aspects of life, do your due diligence before providing personal info to anyone you are doing not apprehend.

Although it might or might not sharply reduce the level of information stolen the the move needs to be undertaken on a regular basis. Identity fraud at the present time is simply not going away. It is still at the top of the list when it comes to consumer complaints.

It was just a few months back that the federal government conducted a nationwide sweep in the hopes of cracking down on identity theft. Little coincidence that it was conducted as tax time gets going. This time of year has been a boon to fraudsters in years past.

While it may or may not sharply reduce the level of sensitive information stolen the the move needs to be undertaken on a regular basis. Identity theft at present is simply not going away. It remains the number one complaint by consumers. However it’s not all bad news. Statistics demonstrate the fact that it is trending downward. People also feel that financial institutions are doing a better job of monitoring it than ever before.

The mistake too many folks make however is believing that these same institutions will automatically protect you against the threat as well as fix it instantly if anything should occur. Sorry to say it still takes a considerable amount of time and effort on the individual’s part in order to get back your identity. Factor in that in too many instances the identity thief never gets caught. You put out one fire and another one is waiting around the corner.

This is why it is imperative that you stay vigilant when it comes to avoiding identity theft and fraud.

1. Be Aware Of Who Is Actually Near You

The majority of identity theft still happens offline. Maybe someone is paying a little to much attention to your phone call where you are discussing some highly sensitive information or perhaps you are at one of those online cafe’s and somebody is intently watching what you do. That is not to say you need to be cautious to the point of paranoia. But you should have a strong sense of what is going on within your immediate environment.

2. Friends And Family

This may be the epitome of being mindful of who is around you. The vast majority of identity theft comes about when the person who was victimized knows all too well the person that did it. Relatives head the list as the worst offenders followed by close friends, co workers and neighbors. For one they figure you will not suspect them and for another even if you do find out they stole your identity just what are you going to do about it?. Sure you may get angry and vow never to associate with him or her ever again. But that will be as far as it goes. You won’t call the police. On this they are counting on.

It is perfectly understandable that you would hesitate to go that route so make sure that the temptation is not there. No matter who it is do not let them have access to your personal information. If somebody comes to your house make sure anything of a sensitive nature is tucked away in a secure place.

To find out more on identity theft and fraud stop by identity theft info

How Much Information About You Is Out There?

How much should you reveal about yourself online? The sensible answer, as little as possible. The more information you put about yourself online the more you are putting yourself at risk.

You could become a victim of fraud - having so many details about yourself floating around online is a criminal’s goldmine. Without being aware we could actually be helping these criminals steal our identities.

Some people even post their addresses online, either the full address or their postcode.

Not only could you be making yourself a target for criminals, but stalkers too. If someone is obsessed with you the first thing they will probably do nowadays is find out everything they can about you online.

Its not just stalkers you may have to worry about, that guy you just had a lovely date with? He could look you up on Facebook if he knows your full name. So make sure your privacy settings are as high as they can go if there is anything on there you wouldn’t want your date to see.

So what you do to protect yourself online?

Never post your address or phone number.

Adjust your privacy setting so only your trusted friends can see your profile.

Never post anything online that you wouldn’t want the world to know.

It seems every day and in every way people will think of new ways to get your money. Today I found an email in my spam folder supposedly from Paypal. This one was very clever, and even had me going for awhile.

They will try every trick in the book to get your login information. Once they have it, they can drain your bank accounts or charge things to you that you don’t even know about until it is too late.

The newest scam is in the form of a “notice” that tells me that I have just sent money (this was seven hundred and something) to a person. The name of the person was given. I do not use Paypal to send money, especially in that amount. The only time I have used paypal is on eBay, if I recall, and that was a long time ago.

So, naturally, I read the rest of the notice, and it said that this amount might take some time to show up on my account overview, but if I wanted to look at my account, just click on the link provided and it would take me there, and I could log in.

The notice said that this money was sent from my bank account. Normally, Paypal will tell you the last four digits of your account, to verify their communication.

I was so flustered (and scared) I couldn’t even remember the password to my account, but went to the Paypal site first. Clicking on anything in an email to link to an account is never a good idea, because then they have your password.

I re-read the notice, and by going back to the email, it showed in the address line that I, along with other alphabetically formatted and similar names had all been sent this email. That told me that it was a phishing scam, which I sorta knew, but had to make sure.

When I got into my Paypal account, I saw that there was no activity like that, and that no money had been sent from my account.

They are hoping people will see the “notice” and in their panic will log in right there in the email. That’s why they make it such a high amount. Interestingly, they include just enough of Paypal’s real website to look legitimate.

I hope everyone views any email with suspicion, even if it looks like it came from someone you know. They have another scam that looks like you are getting an email from a friend or relative, but it is not from them. Somehow they piggy-back on an email address and make it look like one your system already recognizes. My brother sent me a note today, saying he could not open an email I sent. I looked at it, because I haven’t sent hiim any emails recently. It was a business scam with my address on it. I wrote him and told him I did not send it. He had the same problem awhile back.

Just be extra cautious when dealing with emails. You don’t know what you are likely to find when crooks are phishing.

The apparatus after reading the card makes a photostat copy which criminals use to deplete your bank account dry. There are a number of techniques they can accomplish skimming.

It looks like paying by check will go the route of the dinosaur. For many years check fraud was out of control and something law enforcement officials had a hard time dealing with. Now it is on the wane as per the Financial Crime Enforcement Network. Exactly why is it on the decline? Apparently consumers are starting to use far fewer checks.

Regrettably the same can’t be said for debit cards. As their usage has gone up so too has the number of criminal activities. Among the methods that is quite pronounced in these crimes as well as charge cards on the whole is skimming which ranks as one of the top five ways criminals commit identity theft.

Skimming occurs when a small device is used to read your credit card info without you being aware. The apparatus after analyzing the card creates a photocopy that identity thieves use to drain your account dry. There are a couple of ways they are able to accomplish skimming.

1. The Automatic Teller Machine

This skimming gadget can be rigged at an ATM without anyone seeing it until it’s too late. It functions especially well when the atm is outside the financial institution’s camera range although crooks are often so brazen that even that does not matter. Fraudsters sometimes will install it so it not only skims the data but also takes the charge card so as to give the appearance of being jammed in the atm. Once you go to notify someone the criminal makes their move and removes the card before you get back.

How well does this work? Recently a California resident. Officials said the individual installed the skimmer then utilized the information to make fake debit cards

2. The Store or Restaurant

The check arrives and you hand the charge card to the waiter. They go in back and simply swipe the card out of your sight. Sometimes it’s a lot more brazen. You give the card to the person behind the cash register and they have a skimmer right beside them. However the device is so inconspicuous and the transactions happens so fast that you don’t realize what is going on.

3. The Gas Pump

This is not a brand new trend nonetheless it is growing especially with the rise of the self-service pump. The skimming works in the same way as the atm. Thieves show up whenever the gas station is not open (sometimes not) and install. When you cover your gasoline the card data has been logged. As things become more advanced the criminals don’t even have to show up. The information is relayed to an online website server where scammers are ready to record your information.

Children's identities are stolen and their credit is ruined before they are of age. It happens more often than we know. These problems are not easy to fix and sometimes it takes years. Prevention is the best solution. Check with the Social Security Administration every year to be sure your child's Social Security isn't being used. You can also check with the three credit companies, Equifax, Experian and Transunion. It's all free. If your child's identity has been used you can fix it quickly at this stage. It's much harder later.

Are you sure your child’s social security number hasn’t been stolen? If so you may not be aware of the fact for years. Experts say children are empty slates which makes it easy for sneak thieves to take their identity. Sometimes even family members do it to open a new line of credit. If you have any concerns about your child identity number being stolen, check with Equifax, Experian and Transunion. You can send a request in writing for a free credit report, (there shouldn’t be one,) and should do so before the child is 16. Don’t go to any site that asks for money. You can do it yourself free. You can also check with the Social Security Administration to see whether a child’s Social Security has been used to secure employment.

School children singing, Pie Town, New Mexico (LOC) (Photo credit: The Library of Congress)

A study done by Carnegie Mellon University Cylab found fraud in one out of 10 children’s Social Security numbers and that’s only the tip of the iceberg. These children were being monitored by identity theft protection and were notified. There is no accounting for those children who are not being monitored, which includes most children. The average parent doesn’t have a child’s Social Security identity monitored.

Children’s identity can be used by unscrupulous people for years without anyone being aware. A child has no job history, credit or mortgage, so who’s to know until he turns of age? The longer these frauds go on the harder they are to fix. I don’t believe Georgia has any way for a parent to monitor their child’s identity, although Maryland and Utah have something in place or are looking at ways to help parents prevent a child’s identity theft.

A number of companies are offering monitoring services but you must pay for the service. Equifax has recently offered a monitoring plan for $29 a month that includes two adults and up to four children. They will send real time alerts by cell phone. It’s up to the parent to decide which route to go, I would check with the three credit bureaus each year and with the Social Security Administration for free. When my kids were growing up, this was one problem I wasn’t aware of. Personally I know of only one stolen identity and that was an adult. It is something we all should be aware of and check with the three credit companies each year for free.

Identity theft has been on the wane for the last couple of years. However it still remains the number one complaint among consumers.

There is plenty of information going around with regards to this criminal offense as well as numerous misconceptions which can easily have you going in the wrong way.

1. Protecting Your Social Security Identification Number Is All That’s Required

You will see this on the local and national news a lot. A lot of professionals may say this is all you have to do when it comes to guarding your identity. Unfortunately that is not the case. The reality is your identity can easily be stolen in a variety of ways without thieves even bothering your social security card. Among them is stealing your mail, shoulder surfing, setting up a skimming device at an ATM machine or just going through your trash also known as dumpster diving.

2. It Is Up To You To Pay Any And All Fraudulent Charges Racked Up

Never allow anybody to force you into paying anything if you were the victim of identity theft. It is not your responsibility to pay any fraudulent charges thieves have put on your account. You will discover debt collectors do not care about that. They want the money and they want it now. No problem. As long as you remember you aren’t the one doing the payback.

3. It Will Not Happen To Me

Famous last words. No doubt at one time or another many people who were victimized said the exact same thing. Identity theft does not play favoriites. While statistics show the number of victims going down the fact of the matter is over eight million people last year still had their identities stolen. Considering that the number usually hover around ten million as well as the alarming number of ways thieves can pilfer your information and there is little doubt identity theft can happen to you.

4. The Majority of People That Steal Your Identity Get Caught

Because the police and banks have done a better job when it comes to dealing with identity theft you may think the number of people getting caught is fairly high. Not likely. According to studies done by the Gartner Group roughly 1 out of 700 people ever gets caught. No doubt you have seen news reports of law enforcement officials cracking a major fraud ring. While this is true the overwhelming majority of thefts go unreported let alone anyone getting apprehended.

5. Most Identity Theft Criminals Are Strangers To The Victim

False. And this is what makes identity theft a major problem. In many instances the victim knows exactly who the person is that stole their identity. It can be a co worker, a neighbor who comes to your house or steals your mail, a long time friend or a member of your family. Which should give you a pretty good hint as to why many identity thieves never get thrown in jail. As bad as it is along with the damage done many people that have been victimized refuse to take the next step of preferring charges against their friends and/or loved ones.

There’s a great website that offers help to protect your identity – and it’s free.

We’re all concerned about identity theft and other personal security issues. There’s a great website that has a lot of information on these subjects and it’s called the Privacy Rights Clearinghouse.

The PRC is a nonprofit consumer organization with a two-part mission — consumer information and consumer advocacy. It was established in 1992 and is based in San Diego, California. It is primarily grant-supported and serves individuals nationwide.

In visiting the PRC’s website there is a great deal of information about such subjects about being safe online, telephone privacy, public records, privacy issues having to do with technology, shopping, medical privacy and lots more.

For example, the PRC explains how your workplace could present some serious problems for your personal information security. Errors and negligence within the workplace are significant causes of data breaches that compromise sensitive personal information, according to the PRC.

The center cautions that a critical starting point for preventing future security breaches (and the identity theft that can follow) is developing ironclad policies and practices for handling personal information from within the workplace.

Privacy and data security have been critical business issues for some time. Nearly every state in the United States has enacted a data breach notification law. You may have heard of these laws as part of the recent news (2012) about a serious security breach at a company that processes credit cards. These laws require businesses to notify consumers of breaches of personal data that could result in financial identity theft, and in some states, medical identity theft.

Take the Safety Quiz

Data breaches can cost companies millions of dollars per incident in direct costs, such as notifying victims. One study in 2011 found that breaches cost on average $214 per compromised record. In addition, the public relations fallout from a data breach can be significant. Corporate reputations can suffer tremendously, resulting in the loss of customers.

Furthermore, lawsuits against firms for negligent handling of personal information are becoming more common. Even if an organization prevails, litigation costs can be substantial.

The PRC says that many employers are imposing new restrictions on who can take confidential records out of the office and are providing special training on how to keep data secure. Workers found violating security policies are being disciplined, or even dismissed. So whether or not a company is cracking down on computer security, employees should consider protecting themselves. Experts say it’s wise to check your company’s policy or urge such policies be adopted or clarified.

The PRC even has a Workplace Identity Theft Quiz. The quiz asks 18 questions regarding the policies and practices of the businesses you frequent or work for. Tally up the score and you can see where the business falls in terms of protecting personal data.
