The ‘Big Five’ or the five-factor model of personality consists of five dimensions of personality and is believed to represent the core of the human personality (Ciccarelli, 2009). The Big Five was derived from Cattell’s Sixteen Personality Factor Questionnaire also known as 16PF. Cattell’s 16 defining personality traits were narrowed down by eliminating the surface traits and only utilizing the underlying source traits (pg. 535). This resulted in a personality model with a more manageable number, five. The acronym OCEAN can be used to identify the five dimensions: Openness, conscientiousness, extraversion, agreeableness and neuroticism (pg. 536). The five-factor model allows us to get a variety of information from most cultures for a personality description.
