A short article on the Time Magazine Breastfeeding cover.

So i woke up this morning to listen to one of my favorite radio shows. As i shook myself from my slumber in the early morning the talk show hosts started their topic on the case of the Time Magazine cover. I didn’t actually see the cover till a few minutes ago, but come on people. I know i know, most of you are disgusted, but really? Have you looked at us as a people? We are disgusting! In so many ways we don’t accept, we are gross, and we are sick. Also, this isn’t even the first case of parents breastfeeding their older children! Anyone remember a few years ago another mom made the news for doing this? The only difference is she didn’t make it to the cover of Time.
But really, is THIS what we are worried about? Have you SEEN Lady Gaga? I’m more concerned with what song the demented artist of going to release next, than a mother who breastfeeds her five year old. But i really can’t stress this enough, was it time cover worthy? No i don’t think so, but we have bigger fish to fry than worry about how people raise their kids. Have you seen the state of our country? Corruption is running rampant, we are on the edge of multiple wars, along with a government who doesn’t give two shits what we want, and we choose to occupy our time with bitching about a mom who breastfeeds, given the child’s age.

So to get back to the talk show, the female hostess went on to say “its boarder line pedophilea”. Don’t get me wrong i love the show, but that phrase made me cringe by the very ignorance of it not to mention they went on to say “what do you think the mother gets out of it” and they continued to insinuate the mother gets some sort of sexual “kicks” out of it. First of that is NOT the type of pedophile you should be worrying about, we have real ones doing actual damage to children and their families. Second, all she is doing is breastfeeding, who cares how old the kid is. This is America right? than she should have the freedom to raise her children as she sees fit. I don’t see this as pedophilia at all, actually breastfeeding, as we ALL know, is very healthy.
Don’t get me wrong, i don’t agree with what she is doing. But people will parent as they see fit, I’m sure some people would disagree with the way i raise my son, but i don’t care and i will continue to raise him as i see fit. I thought all this taboo shit was done, there are A LOT stranger and disgusting things people do (have you taken a good look at yourself?) and breastfeeding your children into their latter years isn’t even on my list. As i said before we have bigger things to worry about than something that weirds us out, grow up and get over it.

"Conflict doesn't change us; rather, it reveals who we truly are."

When the American soldiers returned home after the Vietnam War, they expected to see friends and family welcoming their arrival. Instead, they were greeted by angry mobs and extreme hatred. Once the choice of the nation, the Vietnam War had lost favour with the people as they began to see what results from such a conflict – death, destruction and loss. The death of loved ones, the destruction of a hometown, and the loss of innocence. For conflict has the ability to reveal the true nature of a situation, as well as the people in it.

Almost from the outset of Pyle and Fowler’s relationship, we begin to see his true nature seeping through. The conflict between them, resulting from Fowler’s jealousy of Pyle and his insecurities, eventually causes Fowler to break his vow to remain desengaged from the war. It is difficult to say whether Fowler was acting for the betterment of Vietnam in assisting with Pyle’s murder or whether it was for his own selfish purposes – to keep Phuong. As the novel unfolds, Green leans more towards exemplifying the latter, especially at the close ad Fowler wishes “there existed someone to whom [he] could say that [he] was sorry.” Fowler’s guilt and shame of his actions demonstrates his regret for what conflict caused him to do.

It isn’t possible to reveal who we truly are without being that person to begin with, therefore suggesing that Fowler has been engaged in the conflict the entire. This cannot be true as Fowler only really becomes involved after the bicycle bomb incident. So, although conflict can reveal who we truly are, sometimes it brings to light something that wasn’t evident in the beginning. Fowler’s selfish nature only showed itself as he began to realise Pyle’s true purpose in Vietnam – to initiate a third force. Hadn’t he always thought of what was best for Phuong? Hadn’t he always put the lives of the Vietnamese people first? These are characteristics of Fowler that have been there all along, regardless of the conflict that surrounds him.

It is not necessarily conflict that changes who we are. Every person is the amalgamation of all their personal experiences, relationships, childhood memories and countless others. We can see this in people of different cultures, different nationalities or different religions. Pyle, as an American, was brought up under the temple of democracy, and it was this idealistic upbringing that affected his actions in conflict, not the other way around. For Fowler on the other hand, it is his experience as a foreign reporter that shapes how he will come to act when conflict arises with Pyle, and with Vietnam in general. He understands how Vietnam works, what the people want, and most importantly, what Phuong wants. When conflict was at its peak and Fowler had no choice but to take a side, although his choice was largely beneficial, it was made for the benefit of the Vietnamese people. If Pyle had been left to his own devices, his ignorance and lack of understanding would have resulted in death, destruction and loss.

Conflict is not what brings about a change in people; it is more like the turning point that forces people to act in a personal way in an interpersonal situation. THis is evident in the Quiet American because Fowler only became “engagé” as he progressed into the conflict with Pyle. Before Pyle landed in Vietnam, Fowler was almost entirely separated from all aspects of life. His wife was left halfway across the world in England, and the important matters surrounding their situation were simply abandoned. From the outset of the novel, Fowler tells us that he prefers the title of a reporter, rather than a foreign correspondant because he claims not to take a side. He even uses opium as a means of escaping from his thoughts. To say Fowler was detached from the world is an understatement. However, the conflict takes a toll on Fowler and it brings forth the feelings and emotions and secret values that he had kept locked up the entire time.

If you were to ask American soldiers going into Vietnam if they would want to murder innocent civilians, they would have said no. If you were to ask them the same question before the My Lai Massacre, where hundreds of unarmed peasants were slaughtered, they would have said no. If you could ask them no, after years of living with guilt and shame, no would be the only reply. Conflict has no effect on our values or our morals. Most of the soldiers who took part in the My Lai Massacre and other events such as that were simply following orders, deeply ignorant of what was going on around them. Conflict only reveals how we, as human brings, act under pressure. It shows us at our weakest and most vulnerable, but not necessarily our true state.

Cruel hold of superstitious belief in caste system makes many people in India roll on the plantain leaves, containing leftover meals eaten by people of higher caste. This ritual, called “Made Snana”, is believed to cure skin diseases. Intellectuals in the country ask if it can cure skin diseases, what is the need for hospitals.

It is sad that even in this twenty-first century, the cruel caste system is oppressing people in India. Caste system has deep roots in every field of life. Caste plays a vital part also in health. Some people in India believe that caste was instituted by God. They think that birth in a particular caste and certain diseases are the consequences of “Karma” in the previous birth. They also believe that serving the higher caste people, particularly people of Brahmin caste, can free the low caste people from the sufferings of diseases. Their belief has led to many superstitions and rituals which are practised in India.

“Made Snana”, which literally means “bathing on leftovers,” is one of those blind superstitions. It is a kind of bathing by rolling on the leftovers on plantain leaves, left by the Brahmins. It is believed that this rolling on leftovers can heal many skin diseases. This is said to be a tribal ritual 1,500-year old, still alive among the people in Karnataka State, in South India. Recently this ritual has become the subject of fierce debate, demanding ban or continuation.

“Bathing on leftovers” is believed to cure skin diseases

“Bathing on leftovers” is an annual ritual performed at Champa Shasti festival, held in December at the Kukke Subramanya temple in Karnataka. This temple exists on a hill at a distance of 110 kilometers away from Mangalore. The festival is conducted by people of a tribe called Malekudiyas. Champa Shasti festival is celebrated for three days. Most important ritual of the festival is serving meals to Shivalli Brahmins in the temple premises. The caste of the Brahmins is supposed to be the highest caste. They are supposed to be given preference in the society. They would be served dinner during the temple festival. The Brahmins are expected to eat and leave some food as leftover on the plantain leaves, on which they are served meals. When the Brahmins leave the dining hall, the low caste people would enter and roll on the leftovers on the plantain leaves.

Rolling on the leftover on the plantain leaves is believed to cure skin-related diseases. People believe that this ritual fulfills the “wish” of the deity who grants cure.

Why do people want to continue this ritual?

Devotees say that the ritual gives them strength. VS Acharya, the state higher education minister of Karnataka, is a strong supporter of this traditional ritual. He says that the ritual can produce antibodies and help improve health. (Unfortunately this minister passed awy recently.)
Indian people believe that most of the skin diseases are caused by some reptile poison which is generally called “Nagadosha.” It is interesting to note that, after the ritual, many people get relief from their skin afflictions. People who got cured include some popular stars of the country.

Voice against the ritual of “Made Snana”

Recent years have seen the call for banning this controversial practice. Intellectuals demand to ban the ritual, saying that it is inhuman. Few weeks ago, heads of some Hindu religious institutions across Karnataka state condemned this ritual. They ask if this ritual can cure diseases of skin or skin cancer.

Although the government of Karnataka State had banned this ritual, it had to revoke the ban recently due to the pressure from devotees. Caste is a cruel system in India. Public awareness has to be created among the public about the ritual. Then only selfish people will not dare to exploit the downtrodden.

Whats Islam has to say on this so called day of love.

What does Islam say?

Deceptive commercials and cultural propaganda present an ugly practice of paganism (mushrik) as if it were some beautiful festival of love – and all the time the devil is laughing at believers who listen to his whispers.

A group of practices considered as the twin sister of bid’ah(misguided innovations). Like bid’ah these flourish on . . .

. . ignorance and outside influence. Like bid’ah they entail rituals. But unlike bid’ah the rituals have not been given an Islamic face. They are followed because they are considered an acceptable cultural practice or the hottest imported “in” thing.

Most of those who indulge in them do not know what they are doing. They are just blind followers of their equally blind cultural leaders. Little do they realize that what they consider as innocent fun may in fact be rooted in paganism. That the symbols they embrace may be symbols of unbelief. That the ideas they borrow may be products of superstition. That all of these may be a negation of what Islam stands for.

Consider Valentine’s Day, a day that after dying out a well deserved death in most of Europe (but surviving in Britain and United States of America) has suddenly started to emerge across a good swath of Muslim countries. Who was Valentine? Why is this day observed? Legends abound, as they do in all such cases, but this much is clear: Valentine’s Day began as a pagan ritual started by Romans in the 4th century BCE to honour the god Lupercus. T

he main attraction of this ritual was a lottery held to distribute young women to young men for “entertainment and pleasure” – until the next year’s lottery. Among other equally despicable practices associated with this day was the lashing of young women by two young men, clad only in a bit of goatskin and wielding goatskin thongs, who had been smeared with blood of sacrificial goats and dogs. A lash of the “sacred” thongs by these “holy men” was believed to make them better able to bear children.

As usual, Christianity tried, without success, to stop the evil celebration of Lupercalia. It first replaced the lottery of the names of women with a lottery of the names of the saints. The idea was that during the following year the young men would emulate the life of the saint whose name they had drawn. (The idea that you can preserve the appearance of a popular evil and yet somehow turn it to serve the purpose of virtue, has survived.

Look at all those people who are still trying, helplessly, to use the formats of popular television entertainments to promote good. They might learn something from this bit of history. It failed miserably) Christianity ended up doing in Rome, and elsewhere, as the Romans did.

The only success it had was in changing the name from Lupercalia to St. Valentine’s Day. It was done in CE 496 by Pope Gelasius, in honour of some Saint Valentine.

There are as many as 50 different Valentines in Christian legends. Two of them are more famous, although their lives and characters are also shrouded in mystery. According to one legend, and the one more in line with the true nature of this celebration, St. Valentine was a “lovers’” saint, who had himself fallen in love with his jailer’s daughter.

Due to serious troubles that accompanied such lottery, French government banned the practice in 1776. In Italy, Austria, Hungry, and Germany also the ritual vanished over the years. Earlier, it had been banned in England during the 17th century when the Puritans were strong. However in 1660 Charles II revived it. From there it also reached the New World, where enterprising Yankees spotted a good means of making money. Esther A. Howland, who produced one of the first commercial American Valentine’s Day cards called – what else – valentines, in the 1840s, sold $5,000 worth – when $5,000 was a lot of money – the first year. The valentine industry has been booming ever since.

It is the same story with Halloween, which has otherwise normal human beings dressing like ghosts and goblins in a reenactment of an ancient pagan ritual of demon worship. Five star hotels in Muslim countries arrange Halloween parties so the rich can celebrate the superstitions of a distant period of ignorance that at one time even included the shameful practice of human sacrifice. The pagan name for that event was Samhain (pronounced sow-en). Just as in the case of Valentine’s Day, Christianity changed its name, but not the pagan moorings.

Christmas is another story. Today Muslim shopkeepers sell and shoppers buy Christmas symbols in Islamabad or Dubai or Cairo. To engage in a known religious celebration of another religion is bad enough. What is worse is the fact that here is another pagan celebration (Saturnalia) that has been changed in name – and in little else – by Christianity.

Even the celebration considered most innocent might have pagan foundations. According to one account, in pagan cultures, people feared evil spirits – especially on their birthdays. It was a common belief that evil spirits were more dangerous to a person when he or she experienced a change in their daily life, such as turning a year older. So family and friends surrounded the person with laughter and joy on their birthdays in order to protect them from evil.

How can anyone in his right mind think that Islam would be indifferent to practices seeped in anti-Islamic ideas and beliefs? Islam came to destroy paganism in all its forms and it cannot tolerate any trace of it in the lives of its followers.

Further, Islam is very sensitive about maintaining its purity and the unique identity of its followers. Islamic laws and teachings go to extra lengths to ensure it. Salat (Prayers) is forbidden at the precise times of sunrise, transition, and sunset to eliminate the possibility of confusion with the practice of sun worship. To the voluntary recommended fast on the tenth of Muharram, Muslims are required to add another day (9th or 11th) to differentiate it from the then prevalent Jewish practice. Muslims are forbidden to emulate the appearance of non-Muslims.

A Muslim is a Muslim for life. During joys and sorrows, during celebrations and sufferings, we must follow the one straight path – not many divergent paths. It is a great tragedy that under the constant barrage of commercial and cultural propaganda from the forces of globalization and the relentless media machine, Muslims have begun to embrace the Valentines, the Halloween ghost, and even the Santa Claus. Given our terrible and increasing surrender to paganism the only day we should be observing is a day of mourning. Better yet it should be a day of repentance that could liberate us from all these days.

Please Forward it to other Muslim brothers and sisters to stop them from practicing such bid’ah… It is our duty as a Muslim and a Human being to spread the knowledge of our deen.May ALLAH forgive us for the sins we do consciously or unconsciously.. A’ameen

India, the largest democratic country in the world, celebrated her 63rd Republic Day recently. It is sad t to find that even after six decades of democratic rule, the country is unable to wake up from the slumber of ignorance. Unfortunately, she is losing her hold on heritage and culture because of the growing poverty and ignorance.

Two sides of democratic India

There was a time when the western world imagined India as a country of snake charmers and saffron-dressed sages. But today, India to the world is a country of technology and man power. The unimaginable growth of cities with flyovers and malls hide the sight of utter poverty and ignorance of millions. The filthy and wretched condition of poor India is hidden from the sight of the universal world by the selfish politicians, who always aim at grabbing votes from the poor and cheating them with false promises. Villages are deserted because of inhuman living conditions. Villagers are forced to migrate to urban areas in search of basic livelihood.

Human beings wallowing in squalor and ignorance

The naked reality of rural India can shock any human heart. The selfish games of heartless politicians can make any conscience shed tears of blood. These politicians, who are triggered and moved by the narrow-minded monster of castes, are very particular about keeping the masses in poverty and ignorance.

The national committee reports that more than 3.7 million people live below the poverty line in India which makes more than 35 per cent of the world’s total illiterate population. UNESCO reports that more than 40 million primary school-age children in India are still kept out of school.
Even if the country has a bumper crop and can export, the hungry people of India do not have the purchasing power to buy the food they need.

Why are villages neglected?

Unhealthy bulging in urban areas can be seen well in the development of the Indian cities. Villages are neglected and villagers migrate to urban areas in search of livelihood. This increases the urban population to unsustainable levels. Politicians are clever to attract votes of the middle class people by such urban development and they are sure to win the villagers for a mean amount of cash or a bottle of toddy or hooch.

Democracy or “mobocracy”?

Politicians of all parties project the cause of caste system to win the votes and make democracy a mean “mobocracy”. Government officials are seen unashamedly corrupt, ready to cut off all the roots of ethics and morality. Money power, backed by vote-bank politics, can turn democracy easily into “mobocracy”.

The so-called educated people are not ready to unite to wage a consolidated battle for implementation of the law or think of the country. In fact, the education system aims at only getting a job and nothing else. Mobs, backed by mafia groups are ready to plunder the country at any cost.

To put things in a nutshell, the very process of law and policy making is now based on the whims and fancies of an uninformed, ignorant public, lured by caste mania and controlled by corruption.
Only proper education can open the eyes of these ignorant people to rise against the oppressing evils of caste system and selfish politics.

Not to every body's taste, but I'm an angry person who needs some way of channelling all this rage.

Everything has a meaning in this morbid image of the year I’ve had. From the overwhelming amount of blood to the “A” on the blank page pinned to the wall. I spent four hours editing this rather large of an abomination that is this picture, often using a paintbrush the size of a single pixel. You can tell from a single glance that this picture is somewhat angry and perhaps not to the taste of many, but, it is the first published expression of my anger (that hasn’t been put in a bin)- I think I’m entitled, better than me showing the anger in a more violent way, no?

Not knowing anything about me, you will probably have your own thoughts and ideas to deduce from this… What does each thing mean to you? What do you think it might mean to me?

The gave me a pen, and let out my inner demon. I dont know if you know of him, he is son of slim. A little devils kin, dont you know its a sin, just to speak, bitch i can see you’re weak, and what i dont seek, so ill treat you like the meeke. Yes life is bleak, however i think, that now, i have found how, to overcome, a fucked system, ment to destroy, every happy thought i employ. Mother fuckers dont toy, because i am no longer a little boy. I am a man, here to take a stand, when i was young this wasnt the plan, but now is set in motion, so ill go with the flow of the ocean, and ignore the pain, in doing so i can gain, a slight reprive, a small relief, in my internal, eternal, greif. Even in my darkest hour, i still can find the power, to stop the irrational machine, that only wants me to bring, out my chaos, it wants to be the boss, like a Stalin hoss, but that string aint clean so i wont floss. Tossing those thoughts to the rocks, and instead ill just put on my batman socks, and my shoes, but which pair is gettin hard to choose, which means i dont lose, my ability, to be formitably, a crime fighter, yo dawg pass the lighter, for a crime needs a victim. hitting my weed is to stop a violent symptome, of being this fly, but yall cant see why, cuz your ignorance leaves you blind, and now i find, i stand in a sea of pillars, most of these people are just fillers, and fathers, of those who can be bothers, to social norm. Minds melting agains the conform, but dont transform, in attempt to make your thoughts borne, of insanity, cuz then you end up in calamity. With that doesnt come, something to overcome, just something to forget, so forget about it.

Orientation matters so much. Knowledge about how to attain fulfillment in life is a great preriquisite to attianing that fulfillment. We are all endowed with capacity for greatness but not all know this. How many know about this?

Orientation matters so much. We are all endowed with capacity for greatness but not all know this. Ruskin says that “The weakest among us has a gift, however seemingly trivial, which is peculiar to him and which worthily used will be a gift for his race”. This thought of Ruskin is the truth many do not know. Everyone on this earth has at least one talent. The problem of many is that they do not see what is in them. Rather they keep focusing on what others have, admiring and desiring to be like others.

People who have good ideas not yet conceived by others rule the world. They are always at the top. They have great asset that can bring them before kings. Today, many have resigned themselves to poverty, failure and to the lowest ebb of the social strata. In their own reasoning and understanding, they are doomed for failure and their situation can never be changed because of the family they came from. This kind of orientation is from the father of failures the devil.

Myles Munroe opined that “The greatest tragedy on earth is not death but ignorance”. For you to have the orientation and mindset that you cannot make it in life is a tragedy. That is where most people got it wrong in this world. Our thinking affects our being. If you are of the school of thought that there are people born great and some are born to suffer, you are wrong. You should change your orientation by reading biographies of great men and women. This will help you change your orientation. I have read the biographies of some great men and women and found out that not all were born with silver spoon in their mouth. Many had suffered a great deal to become what they are today. This changed my orientation and I resolved to do some things that will affect my generation thus leaving a legacy for posterity.

If you must change yourself and status in life to live fully, you should be wiser than you were yesterday. Abraham Lincoln once said, “I don’t think much of a man who is not wiser than he was yesterday”. You should learn something new every day. The quality of friends we have, the quality of our thoughts and the quality of our environment matters in what we final become. These determine your actions and attitude. It fashions your orientation and understanding of life. Therefore, if you will have orientation and mind set for greatness, you should begin to live a more positive life. You should choose friends that will improve your quality of life. Read books that will challenge you and then you will be on the right part to maximizing the potentials in you. Note that your future depends on many things but mostly on you.

Copy and paste Facebook statuses are everywhere nowadays, and they're mostly harmless. But what are they really saying.

“We can’t say Merry Christmas now we have to say Happy Holidays. We can’t call it a Christmas tree, it’s now called a Holiday tree? Because it might offend someone. If you don’t like our “Customs” and it offends you so much then LEAVE. They are called customs and we have our traditions.Just the same as any other religion!! If you… agree with this…please post this as your status!! I AM A PROUD ENGLISH CITIZEN…MERRY CHRISTMAS. Do you have what it takes to repost this??”

Just another copy and paste status, I thought, just ignore it. And there’s nothing wrong with writing a Facebook status that most of your friends list will ignore – everyone does it.

But then I made the mistake of really reading the status.

There are so many problems with it. Firstly, it conflates people of different religious beliefs with immigrants. There are plenty of “English citizens” who do not celebrate Christmas. And a very small minority, if any, would take offence to you calling your tree a “Christmas tree.” They’re probably just going to keep themselves to themselves. Christmas and being an “English” citizen do not go hand in hand. And while I’m at it, an “English” citizen? Surely you mean British?

I could go on. But the main question is this: why do people encourage others to copy and paste Facebook statuses that do nothing but spread hate? Following this status there was a comment which included the famous words “I’m not racist, but…” which of course always signal that the person is about to make an extremely racist comment.

The problem isn’t limited to statuses like these. There are the “girls only” breast cancer statuses that give people the impression they’re doing some good, when really they’re just ignoring all the hundreds of other cancers, and the ways they could actually help: donating, volunteering, spreading the word through something more impressive than a convoluted status.

Many of the copied statuses that I put up with on my News Feed daily relate to immigration. Immigration is a complicated issue, and it cannot be addressed by someone’s status. If you want to comment on such a grand issue, there’s a time and a place, and Facebook is rarely, if ever, going to be it.

The problem with these statuses are that they spread ignorance. And we don’t need any more of that in the world. It only breeds hate, and racism, and confusion. Next time you have something to share, think about what it might be saying. Think about the source and what it suggests. And think about what you REALLY want to say. Because copying and pasting something someone else has said is rarely what you should really be doing, and posting your limited world view all over a social networking site isn’t either.
