Top seven Relationship Killers Countdown.

As if it wasn’t enough to get through the early dating stages without blowing it, it definitely doesn’t get any easier from here onwards. Millions of things could still collide with a relationship that’s otherwise quite solid, leaving the two of you in a wretched state.

Of course, a number of these problems could be worked out quite easily. However, choosing to deal with whatever type of relationship killer requires a lot of careful thought about the value of the relationship to you and whether or not it’s worth the trouble. Sometimes, in spite of all that hard work put into getting there, it would have been a better idea to simply cut off the losses and go on.

No one can literally list down all the possible things that could screw up your true love story. However, we can warn you about the things that are most likely to cause the demise of your coupledom. Here’s our list of the top 7 relationship killers:

7. Friends and Family

Family and friends make up a huge part of your and your partner’s life. Not gelling in well with the people that share your mate’s life can often push your relationship to breaking point. It is almost impossible to adore everyone that she knows. However, you can maintain ‘friendly’ connections with the people that are closes to her life, such as her best friends and sister. It’s important if you want to keep the relation boat afloat.
Remember the long-winded disagreements about politics with her dad that turned quite serious? Or how you can’t stand being in the same room as her best friend? She’s going to need to choose at some point. No guarantee that she’ll take you side.

6. Too High Levels of Comfort

After couples have been together for a bit, they tend to become too comfortable around the other. Some will become like friends, instead of lovers. Intimacy falters. Routine and lifestyle becomes too boring. That’s when they start to let everything slide. Sex tends to fall of your agenda completely. Before you know it, one of you has become the person that’s stopping the other one from getting into a relationship with someone else.

5. Different Aims and Aspirations

As time passes, couples can start to drift away from each other if they are not careful. This may be because of no communication because of other things like careers taking precedence or it might be a symptom that the relation simply isn’t working out.
If the two of you are chasing different goals, like wanting to place roots where you’re located while your partner chases promotions that involve re-locations, there is clear jeopardy in the future.

4. The Past

People that want to live with their past often find it practically impossible to really move on. If either of you insists on comparing the present relationship to their former ones, the future doesn’t seem too good. While it is a good thing to learn from mistakes of the past, it’s never a good idea to treat them as blue prints for other relations. What you’ve got now is different from all other relationships you’ve previously had. Allow it to freely grow – away from your previous screw-ups.

3. Moving Way Too Fast

A healthy relationship doesn’t need to be egged on. It will progress in a completely natural fashion. While not progressing at a uniform speed all the time, relationships tend to move forward as both become more comfortable in each other’s companionship. It’s an instinctive, unspoken kind of thing. However, some seem to lack the basic instincts. Rushing to make your relation blossom can turn it into something neither of you are ready for… not just yet.

2. Independence/Dependence

Maintaining the correct balance between independence and dependence is quite tricky. Humans tend to feel smothered when they get too much of something. If the couple gets to a point where they’ve got nothing but each other in their lives, it’s time to back off a bit. Otherwise, one may start to feel that they need their space and resent the relationship for robbing them of their freedom.

1. Cheating

Nothing else can kill a relationship better than cheating. It’s the ultimate venom. Most couples will never survive such an ordeal. Initial betrayal felt when you find out your partner’s been cheating on you can leave your bonding dead and cold as stone while those bed sheets are cosy warm still.

Even if, working together as a couple, you manage to work past this bout of cheating, your relationship’s future doesn’t look too bright from here onwards. All that trust and honesty has had its brains blown out. Regardless of how many promises are made, no indiscretions will exist. Each partner naturally expects the other to fall in bed with a third person any day.

As with many other things, it has good and bad advantages, but it depends on how one takes it, and what one learns from this experience.

Waking in the streets, I spotted a graffiti that read Living alone makes us freer. Rather than making me gesture sourly, it put a smile on me.

I don’t know whether you live alone or not. If alone, I don’t know what it has taught you, if it has. I don’t know whether you could agree on such a phrase written on the wall.

Taking on my experience, all I can say is that it isn’t this bad. Mind you, I differ between living alone and being a loner, in which second case I am not.

I started on my independence as early as nineteen when I took my leave to London. At the very beginning, I lived with some others in the staff accommodation offered by the company I worked for. But finding that it was way too restrictive for a young girl who liked going out and about and liked entertaining at home, even if it was for a coffee and a chat, I left it to live on my own in a bedsit.

I found it grand to own my space, even though, it meant having to pay rents and utility bills. In the staff premises, we also had breakfast or tea, depending on our shifts as well as our room cleaned when we were on early one. Living on my own, I had to clean (thanks God, it was only a bedsit!) shop for food and to cook. I had to provide for myself in all possible ways. There was no one to whom I could go out of the room to cry them out “Please, come here! I need you!” Whether the sink got blocked or the bulbs fused, it was me and only me to sort it out.

Yet, it was good feeling to be able to tell a friend to go along for a coffee and a chat at any time, without having to mind the others.

I am not a loner and I love interacting as conversation is one of my favourite pastimes. I lived with my family and I had a long relationship for many years. When people ask me if I wouldn’t like to live with someone, because it is boring to live alone all the time. I don’t have much time to get bored, I may respond. Would I like living with someone else? Maybe. Trouble is that when we are adults, we become a bit more selective. Whereas, at 18 or 19 one is likely take on almost everything or everybody. I wouldn’t like to live with someone else for the sake of of not living alone.

As they say in temp job agencies as regards an applicant, They should fit in the profile!

There are good things about living alone than a family won’t be able to afford, such as certain foods. Since you’re alone, you may have the luxury of eating some of the best things, because you only need a small portion. Supermarkets and big chain shops have already noticed this trend by creating small portions of these foods that only a big family could have years ago.

When travelling, one will always find a free seat or a free table at a restaurant to suit one’s likes.

Someone asked to me what if you get sick or have an accident. If one happens to catch a flu, one may go to the near shops for some food, for medicines to stay in bed warm with a book in the hands. If an accident, there is the telephone number one can call up at a cell phone at hand’s reach.

After all, we are born alone even if there’s doctor, nurse and midwife around us. When we die, we are also alone no matter how many turn up to our funeral.

Therefore, it is up to us whether we take the most advantages of living on our own.

Am I right or am I not?

No man or woman likes depending on someone else to take care of them. Independent men are the most attractive to women. If a man can hold his own, he is a great catch for a woman. Being independent tells a lot about a person.

A man with his own place, has his own car is the best catch for a woman. This is a sign of strength and it becomes an important factor in men lives. Having his own place and moving from mama’s boy land is a big step, it is not being above others or snotty at all.

Being a independent man shows he can hold his own. The worst thing a man can do is depend on woman to take care of him, especially if he’s a loser. not having a job, moving in with a woman just for security and finances.

When a woman sees a strong independent man you could be the answers to all her prayers. Being able to take her out to dinner and she don’t have to pay for it all the time. You could develop a very loving strong relationship, behind every good man there is generally a strong woman. Independence is important, it is a strong point in a man that all women seek. There is no doubt that these days women like men who can take care of themselves, women like independent men more because there are qualities they can get from independent men.

When a man is able to buy his own clothes, supply his personal products and pay his own bills, it’s a very strong thing. Some men and women at the age 40 and over have not man or woman up yet. You have adult men and women still living with their mom and dad, but really are not independent. the worse thing you can do is move in together in a relationship with someone and totally depend on that person to take care of you completely plus, your unemployed.

A person that can’t hold their own makes it difficult for themselves. At the age o 60 you should be prepared for retirement, have a bank account well established and your own car. You should not be depending on your spouse or using them for finances. You need to have strength and confidence, a possible ability to escape your way through things. Being a responsible man is all about being a part of manhood and being able to stand on your own two feet.

Mahatma Gandhi had desired the disbanding of the Congress after India attained independence because he feared that once in power these very people would start exploiting those who were liberated from the clutches of the British.

There is no dearth of people who swear by the name of Gandhi without caring a whit about his principles and predilections; but there are few who ever talk about what he was actually proposing to do shortly after India gained independence. There are still very few who talk of what pained Gandhi the most after the congressmen assumed power. Shortly before Gandhi was shot dead, he was working on something which, if destiny had not willed it otherwise, would have changed the quality of polity that has befallen us.

It is no longer a secret that Gandhi desired the winding up of Congress as a political party. But perhaps it is not known to many as to what he proposed to bring in, in its place. But first thing first. Gandhi had set before himself two tasks. First, he wanted to restore peace and goodwill between India and Pakistan, and second, he wanted to purge Indian politics of its corrupting influence. His desire to wind up the party was an intended step in that direction.

Towards the end of 1947, Delhi witnessed the worst communal skirmishes. Gandhi described Delhi as the city of the dead. His sermons at the daily prayer had the desired effect, but the fresh wave of refugees pouring in from West Punjab, divested of their possessions and with blood-chilling accounts of atrocities committed on them, added fuel to the fire fomenting further upheavals. It was at this point of time that he undertook the indefinite fast unto death ostensibly to contain the crisis. But many attributed this fast to Sardar Patel’s decision to withhold the payment of cash balance to Pakistan. This was so because a financial agreement was reached between the two countries. There was yet another agreement on all outstanding issues between the two countries; and one of the clauses was the withdrawal of all Pakistani raiders and infiltrators from Kashmir. But Pakistan did not honour this commitment. So Patel decided to withhold the payment to Pakistan. While the finance minister backed his decision, Nehru did not and approached Gandhi for a solution. This was recorded by Durga Das in his famous book India from Curzon to Nehru and after.

It was at this point that he had resorted to indefinite fast to put pressure on Patel. Patel ultimately relented, and Gandhi broke his fast apparently at the request of the leaders of all communities. But this fact was not known to many. People in general were led to believe that he had undertaken the fast because of the communal situation. No doubt, this was one of the reasons; but certainly not the only reason.

If the communal front disturbed Gandhi, the political situation bothered him no less. He was greatly disillusioned by the rot that was setting in, in the Congress. He was receiving information that a few legislators belonging to the party were taking money from the businessmen promising them licences. Also, he was privy to the knowledge that some of them were indulging in black-marketing and subverting the judiciary to further their own interests and were intimidating top officials to secure transfers and promotions for their protégés in the administration.

Gandhi was deeply hurt by these revelations and was pondering on the possible remedy for this alarming state of affairs. Gandhi had been associated with and had founded many autonomous organizations such as All-India Spinners Association, Harijan Sevak Sangh and the Nai Talimi Sangh. All these organizations were serving the people in one way or the other and most of the members were a dedicated lot. He invited the representatives of the above organizations to Delhi for a conference where he mooted the idea of forming a co-ordinating committee whose primary job would be to recommend candidates for parliament and state legislative assemblies. Some of the luminaries who attended the above conference were Dr. Zakir Hussain and Acharya Kriplani. Gandhi desired the co-ordinating committee to certify integrity of the candidates to be selected for parliament and legislative assemblies of various states. The candidates, he declared, should have the proven record of selfless spirit of service to the community. The members of the committee, he opined, should keep themselves out of politics. But what Gandhi proposed was opposed by the members. A few of them agreed that they should keep themselves out of this ‘muck’ while most of the others were of the view that they should put themselves up for the election.

So, a novel idea got scuttled ab initio. Gandhi’s great brain-child was still born. He felt he was let down by those who professed to be his followers. He was overly dismayed. But he did not give up. He became fully aware that he was being exploited by his own followers for their own political ends. It was at this point of time that he thought of a revolutionary plan. He decided it was time the Congress was dissolved and in its place be installed an organization going by the name of Lok Seva Sangh, i.e. Servants of the People Society. He had already drawn up a constitution for the Sangh, but he could not place it before ‘the Congress Overlords’. The assassin’s bullet ended his life and the ambitious though pious task he had assigned to himself got cremated with him once for all. We called him the father of the nation, but no one, much less a congressman, came forward to fulfil his last wishes. It is said that the unfulfilled wishes of the deceased father is fulfilled by his sons and daughters and grand children. But Gandhi’s tragedy was he did not have worthy sons and daughters and grand children who would take the trouble of fulfilling his unfinished tasks. But surely, there is no dearth of people claiming to be his followers.

So, while we keep swearing by his name, we also keep shunning everything he stood for and all that he prescribed for a good and healthy democracy. Gandhi is, more than ever before, relevant even today. But though there are occasional attempts (shows of attempts, in truth) to have some kind of screening machinery to screen candidates for elections, there is no real work done in this direction ever.

Not only Gandhi failed in his mission of restoring peace and goodwill between India and Pakistan and of purging Indian politics of all its corrupting influences, he also failed to impress the political bigwigs. He had advised Chakravarthy Rajagopalachary who was then the Governor General of India and the governors of other states to shun gubernatorial mansions and move to simple cottages, spin yarn by hand, abstain from consuming liquor and speak only Hindustani and the language of the province. It was just before the communal riots once again flared up in September 1947. Clearly, his advice was not intended to be taken. Nor was it taken.

It will be foolhardy to think that those who did not abide by him during his life time will do so now. By swearing in his name they merely fulfil a ritual and nothing more.

Finally, an important U. S. representative has visited Myanmar (Burma) where she is presently meeting with members of that country's military dictatorship.

A Commentary:

Finally, an important U.S. representative has visited Myanmar (Burma) where she is presently meeting with members of that country’s military dictatorship, as well as with Aung San Suu Kyi, the opposition leader and Nobelist, with the hope that the illegitimacy of that administration be terminated and a new dawn of freedom ushered in the light of a long-nursed democracy. One has to wonder as to why it took so long to get involved in Myanmar’s nightmare which seems to be gradually giving way toward perhaps a brighter future. There seems to be a faint light at the “end of the tunnel,” with the possibility that, after years of tyranny, the turn to a new chapter might be in the offing.

I happened to be born in Burma when it was a British Colony, but after World War II when the rest of the world had celebrated an exhilarating victory, as well as freedom from fascism, Burma had lapsed into a nightmarish military dictatorship which is still clinging to power. Ironically, it seemed as if the rest of the world cared less about the intolerable condition of that country’s much-maligned subjects, as if they belonged to a different planet.

Prior to the military takeover of Burma, there were leaders that dreamed of freedom from colonialism, hoping to establish its independence at the end of World War II, after the Japanese occupation of that country, but it wasn’t meant to be when it was suddenly overwhelmed by yet another calamity that continues to this day.

Perhaps, the visit of our Secretary of State will open a new chapter in Myanmar’s long struggle to establish its true independence on the groundwork of democracy.

This is a discussion of self education and its importance.

The cost of education is going through the roof making it harder to get a formal education however in many cases a formal education is not even necessary. While there are some jobs that you can’t get with out a formal education, it is not the only road available for getting an education. The down side to self edition is that it us harder to prove that you know what you know; however the benefits out way the disadvantage.

Now self education is not for everybody since it takes both discipline and discretion as to what to actually believe and what discount. However the prudent student needs these characteristic even in formal education. Historically books have been the best way to educate yourself and public libraries make accessing many of them even easier. The advent of television expanded the opportunities to learn even more since it provides a way of watching distant historical events live with out leaving the comfort of your home so you can draw your own conclusions before some else can tell you about it. I have seen the men walk on the moon, witnessed both triumph and tragedy including the event of 19-11 and the first inaugurations of the last five presidents all live on TV. I will leave up to the reader as to which category the presidential inaugurations fall under.

However despite all that the Internet has exploded the opportunity for self education that would have made past generation drool by placing nearly the entire some of human knowledge literally at our finger tips. It gets even better given the fact that the Internet is not restricted to any one perspective on any one topic so that you can not only get every fact known to man put every conceivable view point about that fact. The Internet means that the only reason for not being self educated on many topics is laziness.

Just an opinion paper.

The common tendency among Americans is to romanticize the revolution that brought their freedom from England who was apparently oppressing our forefathers’ rights. However, the reasons that they may give for the separation of the colonies from England are rather vague but follow the line of unjust taxation. But this is most certainly not the case. The Americans decided to begin their separation due to their unhappiness over the economic slump following the Seven Years War and over the new taxes that were imposed by England. These taxes though, were hardly severe, and in England the citizens experienced much more taxation. The Colonists separated at the correct time though, to improve their economic and political standing.

The American economy entered a severe decline after the Seven Years War as British troops began to leave the colonies to go elsewhere where they were needed. No longer were there military contracts for large amounts goods that colonial artisans manufactured. Without this large market for their goods, the whole American economy slumped because many workers were no longer working as much and so could no longer pay their expenses. Much of the working class became bogged down by poverty, as well as wealthier merchants who no longer could trade their goods. The casualties sustained in the war also brought down the colonial economy as there were fewer workers and more widows to provide for. Meanwhile, England had obtained an incredible deficit from paying their way to winning the war. England needed to make the money back, and Grenville and Parliament saw the colonies as a way to help. They saw the taxes that they imposed on the colonists as part of the colonists share in helping as they did not think that the colonists had helped in the war. But the colonists on the other hand, saw this as an attempt to suck away their wealth and destroy their economy even further. The only way to get out of this situation was to try and petition Parliament to stop taxing them or to actually separate from England’s economic and political power over them. By this stage, the colonies have become more of a tributary state to England rather than a colony, and so they wanted to exercise the freedom that they had known originally. In order to save their economy they had to be able to trade with countries other than Britain. This would cause a higher demand for goods and create more jobs that would lift the economy of the colonies out of stagnation. And because of Britain’s debt, the colonies would only deal with a severely weakened Britain and have opportunity to trade freely with the Dutch, French, and Spanish who would want to support anything that would weaken Britain’s economic stranglehold.

As well as being economically weakened, Britain had made enemies of the next most powerful nations in the world: France and Spain. The time for the colonists to break away from Britain’s political authority was ideal because France and Spain would be willing to support a fledgling country that could become a fellow competitor of England and weaken her in any way possible. As Parliament began to tighten the political screws on the colonies, more and more resistance began to crop up. This caused Parliament and King George III to send over royal governors who would dissolve the existing legislative bodies or take away some of their power in order to more efficiently quell the problems that began cropping up. This merely caused more trouble as the colonists saw this as a direct attack on their form of government which had been given to them when the colonies were first founded. Once again, the only way to avoid losing their relatively open government was to either comply with the British, plead with them to stop sending royal governors, or to break away from British power completely. But if they did break away from British power then they would be able to have their own political structure and they would possibly be supported politically by France or Spain or even both.

However, two factors that could’ve stopped the Revolution in its tracks should be considered first. One must remember that despite Britain’s weakness, it was still the most powerful country in the world militarily. Even with support both economically and politically from France and Spain, could the colonists manage to defeat Britain’s armies when they themselves could hardly contribute any military forces to the Seven Years War? They had no chance of beating the armies of England in a straight fight even with help from allies. And next, the colonies squabbles between each other would have brought their downfall if not resolved quickly and beneficially. Even with military support from France and Spain, the colonies could not hope to survive independently for long unless they were united under a single government. Despite these huge problems, the support that they could receive from other countries would help negate some of their difficulty militarily while New World tactics could negate a European style military victory. The colonists would also experience a home field advantage compared to the soldiers of England. And with regards to dissent destroying the colonies’ freedom; they had already shown that they could unite to face a common enemy during the Seven Years War. And they could unite again against Britain and remain united afterward to construct a new style of government to accommodate all their interests because the colonists were also innovators who wholeheartedly accepted the Enlightenment.

On the balance, the factors to breakaway and to stay attached to England nearly balance each other out, but the economic advantages as well in some part the political advantages were more persuasive to the colonists. And their risk paid off as they adapted to meet all the challenges that faced them rather than staying true to European style of warfare, economics, and political structure which would have caused the Revolution to fail. It was their economic desires that drove the Americans onward, and it proved to be a strong enough motive for separation that led to other great things.

Every year, our countries celebrate Independence day. My Country, the Philippines, allots June 12 as our Independence Day.

After such a long time, what have we done for our country? Since we are celebrating our Independence, the question is ARE WE REALLY FREE?

Per dictionary definition, Freedom is the exemption and liberty from the power and control of another. As elaborated by Mike Treder, it is not just the act of being able to do what you choose but it also stands for securing to everyone equal opportunity for life, liberty and the persuit of happiness.

I tried reading these definitions over and over again. Hoping to see something that can define freedom in the Philippines. But no matter how many time I reread and breakdown every possible meaning and underlying message, I still come to the conclusion that we, as a nation, is not totally free from our bondage.

Independence day around the world is being celebrated with all glory. The whole country stops and rejoices. It is a day that is not to be missed. It is a day of celebration – the day of freedom.

However, such is not the case in the Philippines. Independence day is just an ordinary day. People may be anxiously waiting for it, not because they are happy enough to celebrate it but because they just want a day off work. Filipinos are not excited about the day that marked our Independence. Why? Is it because it just became a tradition to not celebrate it with a blast or is it because we all feel that we are not totally free, so what is there to celebrate?

If we are to go back to the meaning of freedom, it says exemption for the power and control of another. With this definition as the basis, I guess we really are still in bondage. Both in the political and corporate world, people have been dominating and monopolizing power. Who ever has money, lots and loads of them, get what they want and can get away with anything. The rich gets richer, the poor, poorer. The less fortunate always end up losing more and more. They get trampled upon and cast to the degrading society they were made to believe they belong to. Social Class are highly observed. The poorer you are, the lower your social standing, the lower being you are. Now what ever happened to freedom as having equal opportunity to life, liberty and persuit of happiness? We are in bondage. Bondage of Money and Power.

Strolling along the streets of Bonifacio High Street, Serendra and Market Market is always a humbling experience for me. This is one of the best examples of our social class ranking. I’ve always wondered why shoppers and strollers in Market Market (which are always in hundreds if not yet thousands daily) do not even cross the street and stroll along the beauty of Serendra and Bonifacio High Street. Yes, the ambiance of the malls are the opposite and going from one place to another, though only 25 steps separate the two, feels like warping to a whole new world, but it is still located in the same area code. Why does it have to be classified into two different place for different social class?

I’ve met people who always go to Market Market but never dared cross the street to stroll along the other side of the road. Why? Because, according to them, they do not belong there. They do not have the money to dress well for the place. They feel that people look down on them. They feel that they are not for it.

It is sad to see and hear that people look down upon themselves because others are looking down on them. I do not see any signs that say “people who do not earn this much is not allowed to stroll”, or “people who are not wearning branded clothes can not enter”, or “people who do not have money, stay away”. If we do not have equal opportunity for life and happiness, then what freedom are we celebrating? We are in bondage. Bondage of self worth.

The Philippines are known all over the world to be the country of slaves. Derogatory term but true. I do not look down upon domestic helpers. They are to be saluted. Sacrificing everything for a better future for their families is an act we shouldn’t undermine. But if we are free then why are we branded as the country of slaves. Slavery is not Freedom. It is never associated with Independence. Slavery is the reason for revolution…the reason for the fight for freedom. Are we then free?

If you ask them why they do it, they say they need money for their families, for their families’ freedom. They want their families to have a better future ahead, as not having enough money results to incomplete, if not the lack of, education, which then would determine the success or failure of their future.

In Western Countries, job hunting does not require a diploma from a prestigious university. As long as you have a clean record and has recommendable work history, you are hired. In the Philippines, having no diploma will not result into success. If you do not have a diploma to show, you can only work as janitors, carpenters, or street sweepers. Others have diploma but since they did not graduate from a prestigious university, they are waitlisted. Whatever happens to equality? Where is freedom? We are in bondage. Bondage of inequality and fear.

What is the government doing?

Politics in the Philippines have been struggling to gain back the people’s trust. I’ve never seen a holiday or event that is not bombarded with the street rallies of the anti. Freedom of speech. That is what we are holding on to. But the idea of rallying and protesting means you do not feel free and that you do not feel you are given the right to equal opportunities to life, liberty and freedom. Who are we calling to help us with our fight? The government?

With millions and millions of Filipinos, why do we always rely on the goverment to fix concerns we ourselves can fix? Yes, others are in the hands of the government, and it is but appropriate to call on them for action. But there are cases that should be left to our own hands and not blame the goverment for everything. We are going around in circles, the people blame the goverment while the goverment blames the people. The people do not trust the government. The goverment does not prove the people wrong. We are in bondage. Bondage of the past mistakes.

Inside the walls of goverment buildings are numerous exchange of angry words from one party list to another. Goverment officials go to work to dig on dirty little secrets of a colleage. They call upon a politician to step down. They try to throw stones at each other, thinking of ways to remove the person they hate and put up the pedestal the person they like. We are in bondage. Bondage of anger, envy and self preservation.

For years and years now, Filipinos have been trying their best to succeed. Most have exhausted most of their capabilities and started relying on others for help. Others have been searching still. Most say they have found success in another country. Others have found theirs here.

Day in day out, we walk the streets of our beloved Philippines like Zombies – trying to break free. We give our best effort but always end up failing. We are in bondage. Bondage of always trying to prove ourselves.

Freedom means out of bondage. Let us all work together to destroy our personal and societal bondages for a trully FREE life – a remarkable reason to celebrate independence.

This article was submitted in preparation for the production of second edition of Lumen Christi magazine.

INDEPENDENCE OF CHARACTER.

Character According to Oxford Dictionary of Current English 3rd edition is defined as the strength and originality in person’s nature, the particular qualities that make a person or thing different from others.

Thus, independence of character gives a person freedom and moral courage to fight for what is right and just, not to be fickle minded, but to have determination and purpose in life. The great of society is individual character when character is lost, all is lost.

Do not be a slave to the world, have true liberty of spirit. Liberty of spirit is exercised when one can follow the dictates of one’s conscience, voice one’s opinions fearlessly and justly one’s convictions regardless of the consequences. Independence of character can discern between good and evil.

Keep away from people who act. Acknowledging one’s integrity. It is better to work down the street than to take pride in being seen in your own neighbour’s car or hobnobbing with proud people.

Be always simple, simplicity is the result of profoundness .Do not be a snob, i.e. a person who attaches too much importance to wealth and social rank.

Do not do anything merely because someone forces you to do it, if it is not according to good values e.g. do not smoke a cigarette merely because someone offers it to you. Learn to say “no”, “thank you” and firmly decline, if you are not a smoker

Be polite and gentle always. Good manners do not require you to be weak or cowardly. Do not judge others, never condemn others, be broad minded. Do not be a stickler or a slave to mere routine.

Even if you assert your independence of character, keep your temper. Keeping temper even in the most trying circumstances is a hall-mark of perfection.

Do not be insular in your outlook and interests as if only your opinions are the best.

Mind your own business and do not meddle in others’ affairs if others meddle with your work’ tactfully help them mind their business. Do not join a mob in doing anything silly or absurd or evil. Avoid having the mob-mentality i.e. following the crowd. Learn to stand out of the crowd and not one among the crowd. Be Master of yourself

Finally remember the Golden rule “” do unto others what you would like others to do to you” .Matt 7:12.

                                      Rev. Sr Cynthia Ify-Edeh HCJ

                                      Second year student

Is self-reliance still an important factor?

“Heaven helps those who help themselves” is a well-tried maxim, embodying in a small compass the results of vast human experience. The spirit of self-help is the root of all genuine growth in the individual; and, exhibited in the lives of many, it constitutes the true source of national vigour and strength. Help from without is often enfeebling in its effects, but help from within invariably invigorates. Whatever is done for men or classes, to a certain extent takes away the stimulus and necessity of doing for themselves; and where men are subjected to over-guidance and over-government, the inevitable tendency is to render them comparatively helpless. – Samuel Smiles

Ch. I : Self-Help — National and Individual; earlier variant of the proverb quoted: God helps them who help themselves; recorded in Jacula Prudentum (1651) by George Herbert

Have we forgotten how to help ourselves? Has society begun to believe that our only way out of any crisis is through help from others? Do we not know how to stand on our own two feet anymore?

If we don’t know how, we have got to remember. Being codependent on the rest of society to save us, or even just one person, is a dangerous, dangerous game. If we rely on someone to catch us, we will definitely fall, face first into the concrete of having nobody there to help us.

We would be like a chicken with his head cut off. We wouldn’t know where to go, if all our lives, we had someone holding our hand to help guide us through the life process. We are meant to learn about life on our own, not by other people. Sure, other people can teach us lessons, but they cannot help us breathe, live, and help us along the way, all the time.

Stand on your own two feet or fall on your face, in the end.
