War devastated the Southeast Asian country of Vietnam between about 1957 and 1975. The United States fought on the side of South Vietnam.
France ruled Vietnam then called Indochina from the late 1800s. Between 1946 and 1954 the French fought a long and brutal war with the communist Vietminh led by Hochi Minh.
