Have you ever slept in on a weekend and woken up feeling like you had slept forever? Compared to some people throughout history, you hadn't even come close.

Take Charlemagne of the 9th-century Holy Roman Empire. Because of insomnia ridden nights, he was known to nap for 3 hours after his midday meal. French mathematician Abraham de Moivre was reported to have slept 20 hours a night (and day) as he neared his death in 1754. And sleep researcher Peretz Lavie reported on 19-th century women and adolescent girls who slept for days or months on end – there was even one who slept for a year.

Consider fiction’s legendary sleepyheads. Washington Irvings hero Rip Van Winkle imbibed a charmed drink and woke up 20 years later. He spent the remainder of his days as a makeshift historian, telling willing listeners what life was like 2 decades earlier. And who can forget Sleeping Beauty, who spent 100 years in an ageless, enchanted sleep, only to be awakened by her charming prince?

But if you’ve ever felt like you just don’t get enough sleep, you’re in for some competitive (and powerful) company. While running Great Britain, former Prime Minister, Winston Churchill who slept little, once chided a younger colleague who complained of fatigue, ” I have never been tired in my life.” Margaret Thatcher, another former Prime Minister, reportedly only slept 3 to 4 hours per night. It was said that President John F Kennedy worked in the Oval Office until the wee hours of the morning and then awoke just a few hours later at 7:30 a.m.

Short sleepers in history were at no loss for creativity, either. Inventor Thomas Edison required less than 4 hours sleep per night, often napping on his couch in his workroom only when he felt fatigued. He considered 8 hours of sleep ‘excessive’ and a symptom of weakness. Edison’s competitor, Yugoslavian electrical engineer Nikola Tesla, inventor of the wireless radio, scoffed at Edison’s sleep habits: Tesla reportedly slept only 2 hours each morning.

Fellow inventor and 15th century artist Leonardo da Vinci was said to have worked almost continuously by napping 15 minutes every 4 hours (a mere 1 1/2 hours per day) and not sleeping at all at night. Painter Salvador Dali was rumoured to have napped in a chair while holding a spoon over a tin plate. When he drifted off to sleep and dropped the spoon, the clatter would wake him, and he would feel completely refreshed.

For the majority of us, however we need at least 8 hours of sleep to maintain our energy and to be productive. To sleep is perchance to dream.

I rеmеmbеr gоіng fоr almoѕt 6 monthѕ strаіght wherе I wаѕ gеtting nо mоre thаn 2 tо 4 hours оf ѕlееp a nіght. It wаѕ аwful. I’d lаy dоwn to gо tо bеd fееling extremelу tіred, but thеn I wоuld juѕt lаy there. One hоur would gо by, then twо hours, bеforе I knеw it, it wаs threе or fоur іn the mornіng. Mаn, what аn аwful fеeling!

Aftеr a whіlе, I wоuld stаrt tо get anxіеty. “Whу саn’t I fаll aѕleep,” I would wоnder. I start thinkіng аbout аll kіndѕ оf thіngѕ. Bіllѕ, what I hаd tо do аt work thе next dау, whаt plаns I had fоr thе weеkеnd. My mind wоuld juѕt keeр rасіng аnd rасіng.

Thе worst waѕ when I stаrtеd tо rеаllу dwеll оn hоw lіttlе sleер I waѕ gоing tо gеt. I wоuld gеt еxtremеlу ѕсаred аnd my аnxіеty wоuld shооt thrоugh thе roоf thеn. Onсe the сlосk got рaѕt 4 A.M., I wоuld gо іntо а neаr раnіc attaсk.

Sоmеtimеѕ I would get uр аnd dіg аround the rеfrіgеratоr fоr ѕomеthing to еаt. Othеr nіghtѕ, I’ll get up аnd turn to somе kіnd of іnfоmеrсial tо pаss thе timе untіl thе ѕun wоuld сomе uр.

Mу рerfоrmаnсе at work bеgаn to ѕuffеr аnd mу fаmilу reаlly notісed а dіfferencе іn mе. Mу health аlѕо startеd tо deteriоrаtе and I’m ѕurе thаt lооked аwful. I had thеsе rеallу dаrk bagѕ undеr my eyes and I wоuldn’t ѕhavе hіm mоst daуs bесauѕe I juѕt dіdn’t have thе tіme oncе I gоt around tо gеttіng reаdy tо lеаve.

I alѕо nоtiсеd that I bеgаn to hаvе а lot of dеprеѕѕіоn. It kіnd of ѕnuсk uр оn mе. At first, it waѕ јust a caѕe оf іnѕоmnіа, but bеfоrе I knеw іt mу whоle perѕоnаlіtу аnd оutlоok on lіfе hаd сhаnged. I did my beѕt to distаnce mуѕelf from mу frіеnds and familу.
You’ll be hаpрy to know that I did fіnd hеlр fоr mу іnѕomnia. It toоk me а long tіmе аnd a lоt of trіаl аnd еrror tо come uр with а rеmedy, but it was definitеlу wоrth it. If уоu сan’t fall aslеeр, I’m іt can hеlр уоu tоо.

Relax before going to bed. Do some deep breathing, listen to soft music. According to Dr. Timothy Sharp from Sydney University, avoiding caffeine, alcohol and nicotine will also help.

1. Relaxation
Relax before going to bed. Do some deep breathing, listen to soft music. According to Dr. Timothy Sharp from Sydney University, avoiding caffeine, alcohol and nicotine will also help.

2. Bedtime routine
Develop a bedtime routine so your body knows it’s time to go to sleep. By winding down your physical activities and following a set routine prior to bed, your body will start to associate some of these actions with going to sleep. Start with a cup of hot milk. Milk contains a protein called tryptophan, which helps to promote sleep. This can be substituted with chamomile tea, which is known to calm the nerves. Follow this with a hot bath or shower, the heat will help to lower your internal body temperature, again telling your body to go to sleep.

3. Your bedroom is for sleeping only
Make your bedroom your sleep-room. Turn the lights off as soon as you get into bed. Don’t read, eat or watch television in your bedroom, or do any activity that is not sleep related. Make sure the room is dark and cozy; include extra pillows on the bed and even some teddy bears. Make your bedroom into a sleep sanctuary, a room that you will instantly feel secure and comfortable in, and best of all, a room that you will crave to sleep in.

4. Calm down and clear your mind
Clear your mind of the day’s activities or things that are due to be done tomorrow. Write a ‘to do’ list for the following day. Organize uniforms, lunches, etc … the night before. Make arrangements earlier than usual so you don’t worry.

5. Give time back to yourself
Instead of trying to cram as much as you can into the day then find you haven’t left much time to sleep, try to find short cuts or solutions to give a little time back to yourself. Make a double casserole and freeze half for another night. Spot clean the house as you go. Have more barbecues, using paper plates (less washing-up). Offer to pay the kids, or the neighbour’s kids, to do some extra chores.

6. A balanced diet helps to make a balanced mind
If you’re lacking in essential vitamins and minerals your body cannot operate at its best. Throw out the junk food and fizzy drinks, and make a new start to good physical and mental health. Add in some regular exercise and watch your body respond with some improved sleep.

7. Don’t lie in bed if you can’t sleep
If you don’t feel sleepy enough to drift off, your mind will probably anguish over the fact that you can’t get to sleep. This will only make it harder to get to sleep each time you experience this. Get out of bed and go into a different room. Do something to distract yourself until you do start to feel sleepy and then try to sleep again later.

8. Medications may interfere with your sleep
It has been shown that some of the medications below may cause sleep problems. Check with your doctor if you are experiencing insomnia and are also taking any of these medications – amphetamines (diet pills), antidepressants, beta blockers (heart and blood pressure), cimetidine (ulcers), clonidine (blood pressure), cortisone, diuretics (fluid), levodopa (parkinsons), methyldopa (blood pressure) and ventolin (asthma).

9. Above all: de-stress
Sharp says that stress is the worst cause of insomnia. Use some of the techniques above and try to remove as much stress out of your life as possible, and finally put your insomnia to rest.

A guide for sound sleepers on how to become the insomniac you've always wanted to be.

I’m not much of a sleeper, never have been. It’s the cousin of death after all. Plus think of all the work I can get done rambling through the hall of my house late at night laughing at the futility of all the other people “peacefully” dreaming. No, it’s not for me. I’d much rather never sleep again, thank you very much.

So what if you’re vision becomes blurry after 48 straight hours without sleep? And sure, you do start seeing things after the third day without slumber but who doesn’t want to commune with their late uncle? See, being awake is great. How many good experiences have you had while asleep. None I bet.

So here it is an insomniacs guide to never sleeping again. Until your body shuts down that is.

1. Ensure your bed is extra lumpy, and filled with non-poisonous snakes.

The bed is always the best place to start, if it’s really uncomfortable chances are you won’t be able to nod off into a peaceful dreamed fuelled slumber. So, just go at it with an axe. Mess up the springs, replace your pillow with a soiled jumper or maybe lie on it sideways.

Splintered wood. Perfect!

If that doesn’t work just throw some non-poisonous snakes in there. You won’t die but the bites will keep you pleasantly alert until the wee hours of the morning. Then you might want to try step two.

2. Play music with an unusal dynamic range, or just invite a really bad pub band to your bedroom

Noise tends to be one of the biggest complaints when it comes to non-sleepers. Ticking clocks, leaky taps, neighbours having noisy sex all contribute to a disturbed – and occasionally disturbing night. Perfect for keeping you awake. So. Why not enusre noise by playing music. The problem with that is that it might prove soothing, even the most aggressive song played at the same volume can lull you into a false sense of sleepiness.

Oh Slayer, sing me a dream

So make sure it has a weird dynamic range, where it suddenly goes from quiet to VERY LOUD and all of a sudden quiet again. Tom Waits might be a good place to start, just stay clear of his early piano based stuff.

If that fails to work, just get the worst pub band you can find. Pay them in beer and watch them play shit-rock all night while hoping you ears don’t simply give up on you and stop functioning. Perfect. Well unless they get tired or pass out from the alcohol. Then it’s time for drastic action, see step three.

3. Drink copious amounts of water then sleep in a bath filled with ice.

Most insomniacs have weak bladders or at the very least they think they do. They’ll constantly be up and down to the bathroom with phantom urinary pains. Just because that’s the sort of people they are. To ensure you join them, make sure to chug at least two liters of ice cold water before bed-time, that way you’re sure to remain constantly constant. Unless you’re a really sound sleeper, then you risk falling asleep and destroying some kidneys. Then there’s only one other option, instead of drinking the icy water why not simply sleep in it? You’re bound to be awake shivering till the wee hours of the morning.

Yeah, maybe sever your leg too

NOTE: Be sure to occasionally add some lukewarm or tepid water to the mix, just to ensure you don’t die. This is key.

So there you have it. Soon you’ll be hearing inaudible whispers and communing with Andrew Jackson having lost complete touch with reality. And who doesn’t want that when they sleep?

Going to sleep = pain
Getting up = pain
I hate math.

Somewhere out there, in the wastebasket of history, is somebody who set the example the person who proposed the idea, of going to school in the morning, whether this somebody was from ancient greece or more recent, I don’t know, but if I did meet this somebody, I doubt it would be a polite meeting. It would be a rather “violent” meeting if you catch my drift.

I really just want to lay down in a bed at 9, and close my eyes, and send a message to my brain ” go to sleep”, but this message never reaches the brain, when it does it takes an hour to do so, and considering that lying in bed forever isn’t exactly fun, its just plain dreadful.

So when Summer comes around? What happens? Im a teenanger I don’t torture myself by staring at the ceiling for an hour, I go on the internet I have fun, I do everything I possibly can to make sure I don’t go to bed when im not tired.

Then comes school, then I have to reset my sleeping schedule, which involves the act of “you guessed it”, staring at the freaking ceiling for god knows how long, before my eyes finally close. This goes on for weeks, and weeks until summer comes and the cycle happens again.

I’m use to just waking up at 12 aclock in the afternoon, if that was when school started, in the afternoon, I would be happy, this would be less painful. However according to some research I did, Adults are use to waking up early in the morning, and staying up late is just an unbelievable concept to them. So when it comes down to it, they are two outcomes

Either

The Students are tired and drowsy when school starts

or

The teachers are tired and drowsy when school starts.

I understand that teachers need energy to pump information into our heads, I understand that teachers need energy to discipline a child or write him a detention pass. I just wish there was another place for them to get that energy besides from their “beneficial” school starting time.

Maybe im talking too much,

Maybe I should try sleeping pills and shutup… I just wanna go to sleep.

Chemistry of Love.

Do you know what is changing the body of a man who falls in love? Research shows that more than three phases. Any man who falls in love with these phases takes place. So what are these stages?

1. Passion: a passive phenomenon and in front of you desire like crazy, so to speak.

2. Field strength: the blinding effect of a kind. When you enter one of the shooting, or romance in general has a sense when you think of prisoners. “Love is an eye” to correct what the term really understand that. You can not ask him yourself, and focus on some of the characteristics of the person interested in you. At this stage the biological structure is completely irrelevant.

3. Commitment: Love is a state entered. Spell on you step slowly to the reality of the universe. At this stage, however, strong relationships have problems and manages to stay alive.

MRI of the brain system, more than “reward center” known as the region has been found to cause movements. When it comes to addiction in the same region also affected. The first stages of love and fidelity to the grounds of sex, such as the brain becomes active regions. When you fall in love with the level of serotonin in the blood. The same effect was observed in obsessive-compulsive disorder.

So what happens in our brain when we fall in love? Love, addiction, obsessive-compulsive disorder and other cognitive problems that occur as a result of the interaction of molecules to occur in areas. “Chemistry of Love” known as dopamine in the brain begins to create a sense of happiness. High amount of attention dopamine, norepinephrine, and called at the same time, short-term memory, hyperactivity, insomnia, and the target to trigger the behavior. In other words, couples in love under the eye does not see one another, nothing more.

The first chapter to a short story I was planning on writing, but never finished. Comment if you want more.

As he lay wide awake in his bed, after yet another sleepless night, Dean heard the harsh rumble going by his window. “Why don’t people ever sleep in this neighbourhood?” he thought aloud. The early morning traffic. This was a sound he was becoming all too familiar to. He looked around his small, half-decently decorated bedroom for inspiration to get up and begin his day. He found no reason whatsoever and rested his head against the pillow once more. He would often just lay there, looking up at the ceiling and imagining the things that could have happened, had he not simply let them pass him by. Getting to see his father one last time instead of choosing to wallow in his own self pity and cry for the day. Passing up that promotion because he “Didn’t have time for the extra hours”. Dean was a waste, without the love of a single person. The thing he lacked most of all was soul. He had no spirit. Dean would wander around all day doing what he was told by his boss, and then come home and watch mind-numbing rubbish on the TV. This was his life, he had no goals, no intiaitive and no future. He was institutionalized. And he hated it.

He hadn’t had trouble sleeping since his father passed, but now he wakes from the same dream not twenty minutes after he drifts off. It isn’t even the dream that makes him wake, actually he enjoyed those short moments of sleep so much, that in fact, it is the reality that wakes him. It may seem difficult to understand, but in the first hour of sleep, the mind is still fully aware of its surroundings, and its memories. These memories chew at all levels of Deans’ unconcious mind until he gets harshly thrown from his dream world and back to his shabby apartment in the small town of Kelmsdown, Bedfordshire.

The bags under Deans’ eyes are the main feature of his face. They are distant memories of a life that seems an age ago. He used to be handsome. He used to be popular. He used to be loved. But now he just mopes about, looking for something to spark his interest. He never finds anything. That’s because nothing can interest someone that has seen everything. Figuritively speaking.

Dean used to lay awake at night by choice, he was once able to walk within the crowded cities and never feel fatigue. But the energy he had dissapaited soon after his father died.

This was the first death our Dean had to experience, and he didn’t cope with it well. He tried everything to escape his own death, and in the process nearly killed himself several times. But he did eventually find the answer to his troubles. In a way so mystical and magical, half of the time he thought he was dreaming. Then remembered he couldn’t.
