In just a few weeks, Italy’s geopolitical position has shifted, but apparently the country has yet to realize it. The revolutions underway in North Africa have put the Mediterranean back at the center of world history and Italy, whether she likes it or not, is at the center of the Mediterranean. Geography matters in politics. It is no coincidence that one of the periods of greatest stability and prosperity in Italian history was the long postwar era, when the country’s role as the West’s eastern frontier made Italy, NATO’s easternmost outpost, an important piece on the international chessboard.
