In just a few weeks, Italy’s geopolitical position has shifted, but apparently the country has yet to realize it. The revolutions underway in North Africa have put the Mediterranean back at the center of world history and Italy, whether she likes it or not, is at the center of the Mediterranean. Geography matters in politics. It is no coincidence that one of the periods of greatest stability and prosperity in Italian history was the long postwar era, when the country’s role as the West’s eastern frontier made Italy, NATO’s easternmost outpost, an important piece on the international chessboard.

The fall of the Berlin Wall canceled our status as the eastern frontier of democracy and freedom, but history is now knocking on Italy’s door again. Lampedusa is more than just an unfortunate island where our nightmares of barbarian invasions are lit up each night. It is also symbolic of the new frontier of the West that we are called on to represent, the southern frontier. We are the only medium-size European power literally a stone’s throw from Algeria, Tunisia, Libya – which Italo Balbo called our “fourth shore” – and Egypt as well. What we do and what we say will be important for the future course of these revolutions and nothing of the little we know today can tell us which way they will go.

The current upheaval is so exceptional that even the Palestinian question seems marginalized, and in any case has been spectacularly absent in this highly original tyrant-chasing Arab world. Italy has become so important that Obama even felt the need to phone Berlusconi.

Yet the country’s public debate does not seem aware of this great new opportunity. Politically, the government is doing its best to swiftly erase memories of over-obsequiousness to the Libyan dictator while the opposition is making every effort to keep those memories fresh. Both are fighting rearguard actions to settle the scores of the past.

There are, however, a few decisions to be made, starting with how to be friends with Gheddafi’s opponents after being so friendly with Gheddafi. We have to expect some hostility, but it is by no means impossible – as Angelo Panebianco wrote in these columns on 27 February – at last to combine justice with utility. Any policy that pursues the national interest will require a broader reach. For example by taking a look at Tunisia, where French influence has been extensively impaired by the fall of Ben Ali. For example by reviewing our diplomatic network, which is not particularly keen of hearing when tsunamis are rumbling in the distance, and our consulates, hamstrung by meager budgets. For example by launching an Italian-language TV channel for these countries, which could do more than ten years of foreign policy to conquer the hearts and minds of our neighbors.

Yet even more crucial is answering the key question that this historic upheaval poses: will it be a good thing, or is it just another monstrosity conjured up by the videogame of globalization? Above all, how can we point it in the direction of democracy? Should Europe embrace it, as proposed by those who already see the Maghreb in the European Union, or should it first be put to the test? Should it be aided with money, weapons, and technology, as we aided the previous dictatorships, or should it be bound with immigration, trade, and culture?

Italy has the chance to lead this debate in Europe, if it is capable of conducting the debate at home first. The last few weeks have been discouraging, with the government’s embarrassed mutterings, sketchy analyses made substantially in the dark, and little information. It took a couple of forays by President Napolitano to let Europe know that we were on board. The only thing that appears to interest us about the fall of the Maghreb Wall is the precise number of immigrants who will be landing on our coasts. There is an intolerable stench of nostalgia for the former regimes, which may have been unpleasant, but did at least spare us any trouble.

Just this once, it would be opportune to restore Parliament to its appointed function and hold an extraordinary session, complete with a government report, to discuss what to do with Italy in the face of this new international scenario so that we can cobble together some semblance of a common foreign policy on the southern shore of the Mediterranean. There could be no better way than talking about the future to commemorate the 150th anniversary of the unity of Italy, and also the centenary of our colonial invasion of Tripolitania and Cyrenaica.

5000-Italy's population spend a second night sleeping in cars and tents in northeast Italy. This occurred after an earthquake of 6.0 magnitude shook Italy on Sunday(20/5).

“All around 5,000 people have been prepared in various shelters in Modena and Ferrara,”said local police officer, Luigi Mauriello, as quoted by AFP on Monday (5/21/2012).

One of the refugees concerned about the length of it will be in the shelter.”We’re afraid we might be here for a long time since our house is 100 years old,”said Maria, as she stood under umbrellas in the rain outside the big blue tent set up by the Agency for Civil Protection, Italy.

Firefighters and local police to check every home residents, andevacuation teams set up tents inFinale Emilia. So thousands of people get shelter because most are still traumatized to return totheir homes.

After the earthquake, homes and historic buildings to rubble ina sparsely populated rural areas around the city of Ferrara, the heart of industrial Italy. The quake also destroyed a house which is a priceless piece of architecture.Dozens of aftershocks felt throughout the night and heavy rain hit the area.

This hampers the efforts of local officers who arrived from all over Italy to offer food and shelter. Gas, water and electricity has been turned off in some areas, and building debris was scatteredall over the village streets.

So that local officials plan to stay afloat to provide assistance to return the situation conducive.

“We will stay here until things calm down,” said one refugee camp officers, Sebastiano Lucchi, in Finale Emilia, told AFP.

As a result of this earthquake, Prime Minister (PM) Italy Mario Monti left early, leaving Chicago, United States, where the NATO summit was held. This earthquake occurred just three years after the 6.3 magnitude earthquake that devastated the city of SR l’Aquila, Italy in March 2009.

The massive earthquake killed about 300 people and caused tens of thousands of people homeless.

A look at some ways in which the poems of Anthony Magistrale’s What She Says about Love conform to the reader’s expectations of ethnic literature, and also pointing out where the writing seems to go beyond those expectations.

One manner in which Anthony Magistrale conforms to the reader’s expectations of ethnic literature is through the exploration of his Italian heritage. The reader has a fairly strict set of expectations about ethnic literature. Ethnic literature usually pertains to the exploration of the author’s or main character’s cultural heritage. Magistrale explores his Italian heritage by immersing himself in the culture as he travels through Italy. Magistrale finds himself fully immersed in the Italian culture as he gazes upon one of Italy’s most iconic sculptures, Michelangelo’s David, in the poem “When Gazing up at Michelangelo’s David”. In this poem, Magistrale feels a sense of familiarity with David, referring to the sculpture as “Dave” in one line of the poem. Magistrale expresses the depth of his exploration of his Italian heritage in the fifth of the “Venetian Poems”. In this poem, Magistrale claims that he could easily lose himself in Venice and slip into the city’s rich culture. As seen in these two passages, Magistrale is able to explore his cultural heritage in great depth as we would expect from ethnic literature.

Magistrale also goes beyond the reader’s expectations of ethnic literature by introducing other aspects of his life that have little relation to his Italian-American identity. In most ethnic literature, a novel rarely diverges from the exploration of the author’s or main character’s ethnic identity. In this novel, Magistrale is able to go beyond the limits of ethnic literature by introducing aspects of his life that everyone deals with independent of their ethnic identity. Magistrale introduces the experiences of a father watching his sons play lacrosse and basketball. In “Poem for #18″, Magistrale watches his son play his last lacrosse game and reflects on his son’s inevitable introduction into the world outside of high school. Magistrale also investigates the universal concept of love throughout his novel. In the poem “She”, Magistrale contemplates the power that the love for a woman has over a man’s every action. With her every movement, the man’s universe shifts. By introducing the universal concepts of love and parenthood, Anthony Magistrale is able to go beyond the expectations of conventional ethnic literature and present us with a unique set of poems that celebrate Italian-American heritage.

We all know that governments across the world are fighting a seemingly uphill battle to prevent our ever increasing drug importation and its subsequent social problems, but it’s interesting to note that the first International Drug Treaty was signed 100 years ago in 1912.

Probably due to period dramas and school history lessons, I think most of us have grown up wearing rose tinted glasses and thinking that the world encompassed a much more disciplined and moral social structure prior to the 1960s “years of enlightenment” so it may be interesting for you to discover that 100 years ago drugs were readily available for common consumption and, on the whole, governments considered alcohol abuse to be the greater evil.

Before the 1912 International Opium Convention narcotics were trafficked across the world with scant intervention by authorities but the 1912 Convention committed countries across the world to stop trading in opium (produced from the dried residue of poppies), morphine and cocaine. On the whole this drug was supposedly used for its “anaesthetic properties” but needless to say, things had got a little out of hand and use for “recreation” began in earnest.

The US embraced this document wholeheartedly, and the British said they were happy to go along with it and sign it although perhaps not quite as enthusiastically as the US! In fact, Britain had fought two wars against China back in the 1800s in favour of the importation of opium.

Pre 1912

The opium wars saw us good old stiff upper lipped Brits battling the Chinese as we regularly shipped copious amounts of the drug through India and into China before it finally arrived on the shores of our “Sceptred Isle”. However, China viewed the drug much as we view it today and were keen to restrict the amount being trafficked through their country.

Joe Public in the UK was able to buy opium, cocaine and poisons such as arsenic readily over the chemist’s counter and it if you’d lived or worked in any of our major ports in the UK, you would have found it amongst ordinary cargo being unloaded, and in 1785 The Times actually listed opium from Symya (now called Izmir) in Turkey in amongst oil from Leghorn (now Livorno) in Italy and peas from Dantzic (now Gdansk) in Poland being unloaded from a ship in London.

I was particularly interested to learn that, come the early part of the 19th century, travellers coming into my sleepy little home county of Norfolk UK were warned not to drink the beers and ales served in taverns as it could well be laced with opium. At that time, opium was considered to be a great boon to ward off malaria which flourished in our wide expanses of wetland, known as the fens. I suspect this laced booze was most prevalent in Great Yarmouth and King’s Lynn, our major ports. But this drug was not only prescribed for malaria, it was also promoted as a cure for coughs and colds and was often given to “patients” for all manner of ailments in the form of laudanum – a concoction of opium mixed with alcohol.

Balmoral Castle, Scotland

Amongst the great and the good who were believed to have imbibed in this “wonder drug” were, most notably, Queen Victoria who ordered the stuff from the royal apothecary at Balmoral in Scotland and she is understood to have enjoyed a touch of opium gum with a very young Winston Churchill (later to become Prime Minister).

A Young Winston Churchill

And apparently Prime Minister William Gladstone took opium in his tea or coffee before he “took to the stage” when making speeches. No wonder our British Empire turned to dust!!

In 1868 the Pharmacy Act was passed which restricted the use of opiates but, like so many Acts passed by the government over the years, it really wasn’t very effective. It stated that any opium user had to provide a name, address and other personal details to the chemist before the drug could be handed over at the counter.

Limehouse, London (early 20th century)

Being an avid fan of Victorian history, it had, I suspect due to period dramas and Victorian based novels, been my belief that hundreds of bored aristocrats who had nothing better to do would lurk amongst the unruly and unwashed members of society in the east end of London doped up to their eyeballs on opiates or contracting sexually transmitted diseases from the vice dens, particularly those in Limehouse where the Chinese sailors settled but, according to recent research, there’s no real evidence that this was the case. Thinking on it, I’m now considering that some aristocrats could undoubtedly be found there but feel it more likely that these “jolly good chaps” would prefer to mix with their own classes and imbibe in a gallon or two of good wine and have a flutter at the gaming tables, then stumble back to their gentlemen’s clubs to crash out in comfort and be waited on hand and foot following a “binge and a flutter” night.

Oscar Wilde

The belief that the upper crust of our British society spent hours in opium dens was further enhanced in Oscar Wilde’s “The Picture of Dorian Gray” where he referred to the fact that you could “buy oblivion” and “horrors and memory of old sins could be destroyed by the madness of sins that were new”. However, around that time, the intake of opium which was considered a drug of misery was fast becoming old fashioned in favour of the more uplifting cocaine and of course, the most famous fictional character who took cocaine to lift his spirits was none other than Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s Sherlock Holmes who injected it to lift him from depression.

Arthur Conan Doyle

It also became particularly popular with the more Bohemian members of our society – those arty farty intelligentsia and often highly strung artistic people who maintained it was vital to open up their minds when they needed a spot of artistic stimulation.

Fortunately the US didn’t perceive cocaine as a vital artistic stimulant and were more concerned with the association there with street gangs and, ultimately, with the usual (and still prevalent!) propaganda that this drug sent “black men insane” and thereby put poor defenceless little white women at risk. This obviously had a knock on effect to drive the US to sign up to the 1912 Act.

Post 1912

Although the Act undoubtedly reduced the importation of drugs it didn’t stop individual users and when the Great War (World War I) broke out in 1914, opium and cocaine were still legal drugs in Great Britain. During the second year of the war there was concern over the general intake of alcohol in the front-line ranks which it was considered may have a significant detrimental effect on the progress of the war so, in 1915 stricter licensing laws were passed which led to a hive of underground “vice dens” particularly in the more theatrical area of London, through which so many of our gallant troops travelled before being shipped overseas. Some of our gallant troops it seems were not particularly “gallant” however, and on passing through London headed to the brothels or made good use of the prostitutes within this area and this was a criminal offence. With the new strict drink licensing laws it soon became apparent that brothels were selling sex alongside the still readily available opium and cocaine. The government therefore brought in emergency legislation to restrict the use of drugs.

Towards the end of the war in 1918 journalists were keen to find another outlet for “shock factor” articles and began delving more into the seedy side of drug taking, most notably amongst theatrical celebrities. One of the most famous scandals was based around the death of popular actress Billie Carleton.

Billie Carleton

Billie had attended an opium party the night before her death in 1918 and the inquest revealed that she had died from an overdose of cocaine. Her friend, one Reginald de Veulle was subsequently charged with manslaughter and conspiracy to supply a prohibited drug. He had bought the drug from a woman called Ada and her Chinese husband Lau Ping You in Limehouse, London. However, de Veulle was acquitted of the manslaughter charge but was found guilty of supplying Billie with the cocaine and for this crime he received an eight month prison sentence. Ada was sentenced to five months hard labour and her husband was fined £10.

Eventually, in 1920, the emergency action which had been put into place during the war, was made permanent in the Dangerous Drugs Act of 1920.

Freda Kempton

Another case which caught the public’s attention in the media was that of Freda Kempton, a young dancer, who was found dead after taking an overdose of cocaine in 1922. The journalists, who it seemed were targeting the Chinese community in connection with any drug death incidents, had a field day with this case as it involved a “poor young woman” who had obviously been seduced by a Chinaman, an entrepreneur known as Billy “Brilliant” Chang.

Billy “Brilliant” Chang

Freda had been with Mr Chang on the night she died. Needless to say, this did nothing to aid inter-racial harmony and it became apparent that the Chinese community as a whole would come under fire from the “native” British people who now considered that every Chinese man was out to ensnare innocent white women with his charismatic manners and force them to use drugs.

However, following the Kempton case this panic amongst the British that cocaine was having a considerable effect on our innocent little women, the fire dwindled and was soon extinguished although drugs were known to be dealt in Limehouse and in the “red light district” of Soho and, once the drug laws came in banning the use of cocaine and opium, the problem was so insignificant it was easily dealt with by the police.

The real drug problem began after World War II during the “baby boom” period which saw the rise of rebellious teenagers throughout the 1950s and 1960s. These young people, due to the more modern and speedier transport links, were able to travel further afield and those who were getting into drugs at the time travelled to Morocco to smoke hash or find areas where they could get hold of amphetamines.

It was at this time the police found they were beginning to have problems containing the importation and taking of drugs and their efforts weren’t helped by various powerful international cartels.

And as we all know, this problem is still rife today – it seems the governments and law enforcement agencies are fighting an ever losing battle to get this deadly crime under control and I suspect that despite their increased efforts to stamp out illegal drugs, sadly there’ll always be a criminal out there who can find a way of outwitting them.

Response to "I am David" by Anne Holm.

The main reason that David can be adored by any reader is his personality and his strong characteristics.

He faced many challenges and the most important is learning to trust other people again.

First of all stands his bravery that’s spread throughout the book.

David had to swim to Italy. But before long he realized that it wasn’t so easy to swim for so long. Several hours passed before he reached land. David’s courage can clearly been seen when he rescues a girl from a burning shed.

“With all the bravery he could muster he sprang into the blazing fire. He could see a little girl tied to a chair. After coughing and cutting David finally carried the girl out of the burning shed.”

David is an open minded boy who does not have any background knowledge but in spite of that he is eager to learn new things and that’s how he manages to survive. It took him such a long time to write such a short note to Maria. David sat down and thought for a long time. Then he wrote very very slowly and very carefully.

For the first time ever he had entered a church, he had wanted to for such a long time. David crept quietly towards the priest.

“If it were someone praying, he wanted to listen, he might learn something.”

Through the book David has shown his best problem solving skills. He faced major difficulties but succeeded to find solutions. On the ship that he had to go on “He found a corner where there were only a couple of sacks, and where he could stay well hidden even if someone came into the hold.

In another occasion, he had to stay awake all night in order to get on with his plan. The stable was a wooden building. His knife grew blunter. But at last he managed to hack out a big square hole large enough to get through.

In Conclusion David is a very determind boy and for this reason he could survive the long journey through Europe.

David never gave up and at the end of the book managed to find his mother.

Brief summary on Rome.

Land area: 496 sq mi/1,285 sq km

Population: 4 million

Rome is the capital and largest of Italy. The city is located in the central-western portion of the country. Within the center of Rome lies Vatican City, the world’s smallest independent country.

Rome is one of the most-visited cities in the world. It is a leading center for culture, history and arts. It has long been admired for its preservation of historical landmarks and monuments, particularly the Colosseum, one of the world’s oldest structures. The city receives an estimated 30 million tourists a year. In 1960, Rome hosted the Summer Olympics.

The city’s history dates back as long as 2,500 years. It was the capital city of the Roman Kingdom, the Roman Republic and the Roman Empire, growing from a small city-state to a gigantic empire which encompassed nearly all of Western Europe and the lands bordering the Mediterranean for over seven hundred years from the 1st century BC until the 7th century AD and the city is regarded as one of the birthplaces of western civilization. Since the 1st century AD Rome has been the seat of the Papacy and, after the end of Byzantine domination, in the 8th century it became the capital of the Papal States, which lasted until 1870. In 1871 Rome became the capital of the Kingdom of Italy and has been the capital of Italy ever since. After the end of World War I, Fascist leader Benito Mussolini took power, pledging to return Rome to its former greatness and allied the country with Nazi Germany. The interwar period saw a rapid growth in the city’s population, eventually surpassing 1,000,000 inhabitants. In World War II, due to its status of an open city, Rome largely escaped the tragic destiny of other European cities, but was occupied by the Germans following its surrender to the Allies. It was liberated by Allied forces June 1944. After the war, the city grew momentously, as one of the driving forces behind the Italian economic miracle of post-war reconstruction and modernization.

Discussion of the archaeological ethics surrounding the collecting of antiquities.

In October 2009 I noted that antiquities had been seized from a New York auction house. Two of the items were an Apulian situla and an Attic pelike. The US ICE has now issued a press statement about the return of the antiquities including a marble head (”ICE returns stolen and looted art and antiquities to Italy“, April 26, 2012). All three items had passed through Christie’s Rockefeller Plaza in June and December 2009 and, according to the statement, had been derived from Gianfranco Becchina (”Two of the four investigations have been linked to Gianfranco Becchina, an Italian national allegedly associated with Italian organized crime and a competitor of the Giacomo Medici smuggling organization”).

Christie’s made an elusive press statement at the time. It is also worth quoting my comment from the time:

If the seized Apulian situla and the Attic pelike are indeed the ones appearing at Christie’s in June 2009 then it makes the quote from G. Max Bernheimer, International Department Head of Antiquities, all the more significant: “Today’s [sc. June 3, 2009] strong results show that wonderful objects with clear provenance continue to perform exceedingly well at auction.”

It would now appear that the “clear provenance” was in fact the stock of Becchina.

The seizure has already been noted by me in the Journal of Art Crime (Spring 2010) 83 and in more detail in an article, “Polaroids from the Medici Dossier: Continued Sightings on the Market”, co-authored with Christos Tsirogiannis in the Journal of Art Crime (Spring 2011)

Brief summary on the United States.

Official name: United States of America

Official language: English

Land area: 3,619,239 sq mi/9,366,014 sq km

Population: 310,462,000

Dominant religion: Christianity

Capital: Washington, D.C.

Current leader: President Barack Obama

United States is a large country in North America, spanning the entire east-west distance of the continent. It is world’s fourth largest country in landmass and third largest in population. Only Russia, Canada and China cover more land and only China and India have more people. When the states of Alaska and Hawaii, both which are separated from the mainland, are included, the United States covers more land than China. The U.S. is bordered by Canada to the north, the Atlantic Ocean to the east, the Gulf of Mexico and Mexico to the south and the Pacific Ocean to the west. It is comprised of 50 states and one federal district.

The United States is widely considered to be the world’s most ethnically diverse country. Virtually every nationality and ethnic group in the world is represented. People of European descent make up about 65 percent of the population; Hispanics and people of African descent make up about 12 percent each; people of Asian/Middle Eastern and Pacific Islander descent make up about 10 percent and Native Americans comprise about 1 percent. Because of the country’s ongoing stubborn racial divide people of mixed ancestry have long been forced to identify with just one race or ethnic group and therefore the federal government has never been able to keep an accurate number of people of mixed ancestry. Only about 2.4 million, less than 1 percent of the population, officially acknowledge mixed heritage but this number is believed to include only those of mixed African and European ancestry. But if the vast number of blacks and whites who also claim Native American ancestry are included, as well as those of mixed black and Hispanic ancestry, mixed white and Hispanic ancestry, mixed Hispanic and Asian ancestry, mixed black and Asian ancestry and mixed white and Asian ancestry, the percentage of Americans of mixed ancestry can very well be as high as 15 percent.

The United States is the world’s largest market economy and widely considered to be the world’s wealthiest nation. American-made goods can be found in almost every corner of the globe. It is the most highly industrialized nation with vast deposits of natural resources and very few countries have made as much use of their natural resources as the U.S. has. Because of the country’s wealth and opportunities, the United States has long been the top destination for immigrants and it is one of the world’s top tourist destinations. Glitzy major cities such as New York City, Los Angeles, Chicago, San Francisco, Las Vegas, Houston, Miami and Atlanta are symbols of vast financial opportunities and entertainment.

Christopher Columbus landed in the Bahamas in 1492 but the land that is now the United States remained unexplored until the 1520’s, when the Spanish began exploring the southeastern U.S. The oldest incorporated city in the U.S., St. Augustine, Florida, was founded in 1565. At about the same time, however, the British and French were also beginning to stake claims to parts of the new land further north. In the 1600’s British territory was taking the shape of 13 colonies along the Atlantic Ocean. In 1775, these 13 colonies began revolting against British rule, sparking the American Revolution. On July 4, 1776, the colonies officially declared independence although the war would rage on for another seven years. For the next roughly 120 years, through a series of treaties, purchases and wars, and not to mention atrocities against Native Americans who were already inhabiting the land, the United States would expand westward until finally reaching the shores of the Pacific Ocean. Under the 1783 Treaty of Paris, it was given all the land east of the Mississippi River. It gained control of Florida from Spain and annexed Texas in the 1840’s. The Louisiana Purchase from France nearly doubled the size of the country. It was awarded what now makes up Arizona, California, Colorado, Nevada, New Mexico and Utah in 1848 after defeating Mexico in the Mexican-American War. It fought another war with its colonial ruler, the United Kingdom, in the War of 1812, in which the British destroyed Washington, D.C. It would be the last time a foreign power would invade American soil.

While the U.S. rapidly expanded there was one issue that was increasingly dividing the country – slavery. By 1819, every Northern state had abolished slavery but for the South, whose economy depended heavily on agriculture, slavery was part of the lifeline. In the mid-1800’s Congress was passing a series of laws which, in the opinion of the South, had the ultimate goal of ending slavery. In 1861, following the election of Abraham Lincoln as president, the Southern states broke away and declared themselves the Confederate States of America, sparking the American Civil War. Four years and more than 600,000 deaths later, the country was reunited. Afterwards, the country continued to grow. The Spanish-American War of 1898 marked the country’s debut as a global military superpower. It gained its first foreign possessions – the Philippines, Guam and Cuba. During World War I it showed its superpower potential again by helping the United Kingdom, France and Italy defeat Germany and Austria-Hungary. Although the country tried to retreat from the world stage but was called back in World War II, emerging from the war as the world’s most powerful nation and leader of the free world. During the Cold War, the United States was about all that stood between the free world and the spread of communism by the Soviet Union. In the Korean War it saved South Korea from communism although it failed to stop communism in the Vietnam War. In the 1991 Persian Gulf War it took the lead in turning back Iraq’s invasion of Kuwait.

While it was trying to keep the world safe from the Soviet Union in the 1950’s and 60’s the U.S. also had to save itself at home. During that period, blacks, long disenfranchised as second-class citizens, began taking to the streets in the civil rights movement, demanding more equal rights and an end to the humiliation of segregation. By the end of the 1960’s segregation was no more but racial problems continue to persist. Through it all, most people continue to consider the United States the greatest country in the world and the best example of democracy and it even with the removal of the Soviet threat, it continues to take an active role in global affairs as the world’s lone military superpower.
