Reasons for Spanish Neglect of The Lesser Antilles

The discovery of the west indies by Christopher Columbus was accompanied by Spanish settlements in the islands. But Spaniards did not establish settlements on all the islands discovered. Rather there was a marked concentration of effort on the larger islands such as Hispaniola, cuba, Puerto rico and Jamaica which make up the greater Antilles. Alternately, the smaller islands of the lesser Antilles were neglected. There was nothing haphazard in the action of the colonists. Their concentration on the larger islands was dictated by the motives of colonization, by the geography of the region and by the desire for survival.
