The vast majority of Americans can identify the three main branches of our government. There is Congress, which writes and passes legislation; there is the executive branch, which is contrived by the president and their cabinet, which enforces legislation, and thirdly the judiciary system. While the judiciary system has the highest approval rating among the three branches, it is the most misunderstood aspect of our government. This may be due to the complexity of the judiciary as a whole. It is a branch that is comprised of many different levels at both the state and federal level, and also encompasses both criminal and civil responsibilities. This paper is an attempt to navigate the judiciary system, more specifically to explore the differences as well as the similarities in criminal proceedings at the Vermont State and Federal levels.
