Materialism is the tendency to consider physical comfort as more important than spiritual beliefs. It is a common issue that is found in countries all over the world, particularly in power production countries such as India and China. Materialism can be identified by its unfair distribution of wealth amongst all people. Scholars such as Karl Marx have identified materialism as a key issue, and a key faction behind the wide chasm of ‘haves’ and ‘have not’s’ that we experience in our society. Materialism is also an issue tackled by fundamentalist religious groups who believe our current obsession with physical objects and material success is in conflict with their key teachings, such as those in the bible and the Qur’an.
