The holiday called Christmas is designated as a celebration of the birth of Christ, hence its name. Though the exact date of Christ’s birth is not recorded in the Bible, December 25th was chosen by 4th century Pope Julius I as the date for Christmas in an effort to Christianize pagan festivals such as Saturnalia and Solstice. Some truly unusual Christmas traditions are but remnants of those pagan holidays, while others are just plain unusual or amusing.
