Some of the media is reporting that the economy is picking up. Reports have come in that 25 states reported a drop in the unemployment rate in September. This must be good news, right? If you dig deeper for all the facts, you will find that the news is not so good.

The Labor Department reported that in September, 25 states reported a drop in the unemployment rate while 14 reported an increase and 11 stayed the same. They also said that the employers added almost twice as many jobs in September than in August. The number of people that applied for unemployment benefits in September is the lowest number in six months. These are encouraging signs that the economy could be improving and could be the start of the United States heading in the right direction for the millions of people out of work.

Before we start celebrating, we must look at the whole picture and see what the complete set of facts are really telling us. The reports state that 103,000 jobs were created in September, but 45,000 of those jobs were the Verizon workers who went back to work after their strike was over. These are hardly new jobs that were created. The actual figure is 68,000 jobs created. The unemployment rate stayed unchanged at 9.1% but would have been much higher if the strikers did not go back to work. The number of layoffs may have slowed down, but the number of people going back to work is not improving fast enough to bring the unemployment rate down. When people stop collecting unemployment benefits, they are no longer counted as being unemployed, no matter whether they find a job or not.

The bottom line is that the unemployment rate is still stuck at 9.1%. Several chains including Toys R Us have stated that they plan to hire fewer seasonal workers this Christmas than in years past. Several retail sources have told me that they expect Christmas spending to be slightly off this season and some aggressive sales will have to be implemented to try and meet last years numbers.

It is easy to pick certain statistics and use it to spin a story ant way you want. The media is good at this, and has always done this in the past. The economy is still stuck in a weak and stagnant position. A huge group of striking workers may not go back to work in October to help skew the numbers again. One sliver of good news does not change the whole picture.

A few suggestions concerning the rapidly changing workforce.

The developed world is rapidly erasing manual labor. The need for a large workforce is on the decline. I am suggesting to the common man and woman and those who mold the structures which direct all of our daily activities, to consider a split week.

An employer who normally hires 20 employees can hire up to 40 associates, but only allow a 4-day or 3-day workweek. This will allow more people to work, more leisure time, a more productive workforce and a less stressful society.

The economists, accountants, production and financial managers business owners and the Department of Labor, will have to figure out a minimum wage to sustain such a system.

Speed of light technologies have taken up a permanent space in our lives. We must adjust and change with the times.
