So you want to learn Latin? Not sure where to start? You want a crash course? This is everything you need! In under one hour a day, you can learn Latin in under two months!

The Ancient Romans may be long gone, but their language is still very much with us today. There are many benefits to learning Latin. This is an outline of a two month course to give you a good footing in Latin. If you have a formal college class coming up or if you just want to sink your teeth in, this is the course for you. In two months you will be reading basic Latin effortlessly. If done properly, Latin is not an impossible language to learn, but a pleasant one that only requires some effort from you.

The most important thing is consistency. It’s easy to start something and lose interest later. A good way to avoid this is to limit yourself at the beginning. Don’t allow yourself to burn out. If you want to do 30 minutes, only do 25. Keep yourself wanting more. This is very important especially at the beginning.

Preparation

1. Read Learn Latin in 5 Minutes for a quick primer in Latin. It will literally take you 5 minutes. What do you have to lose? This is easy! And no, you don’t need to have ever seen Latin before to read it in 5 minutes the way it is set out here.

2. Purchase Hans Orberg’s Lingua Latina. There are other Latin texts out there, of course, but for a quick jump into Latin you do not have the time to recite declensions for days on end. You want to read it NOW. This 2-month course is based on Orberg’s book, which can be downloaded here.

3. Think about English. You know that there are verbs, nouns, and adjectives in English, right? Language is a little bit more complex than that. Have you ever thought about the fact that “we” and “us” are basically the same word, but said differently depending on context? And making plurals is a bit weird in English also. Most words just get an “s” on the end, like “cat” and “cats”, but other words change a bit more, like “person” and “people” or “leaf” and “leaves”. In Latin, words have their own rules that change them slightly. Luckily, they are quite regular (moreso than English actually!) and you get used to them pretty quickly. Just like when you learnt your first language as a baby, it’s best to start using Latin first and learn about particulars later.

4. Download a Latin-English dictionary. Freelang is a rather good one (it’s free!), but look around and find one you like. A good reference is Whitaker words. These are 85% of all words in written Latin. There are 1400 of them. If you are familiar with these, then you already have a fantastic foundation in Latin. Actually, of the 1400, many are similar to English (e.g. “leo” means “lion”), which makes the actual number you need to learn lower than one thousand.

5. Download the free Fabellae Latinae from Orberg’s website. It corresponds exactly with Orberg’s book.

The Course

1. Listen to the recording for chapter 1 of Lingua Latina while following along the text. Do this two or three times (you will only have to listen once by about lesson 5) to get familiar with the sound and pronunciation of Latin. The recording for each chapter is about 5 minutes long, so this will take 10-15 minutes at first, but only 5 minutes after a few days of getting used to things.

2. Read over chapter 1 more slowly aloud to yourself. Try to guess the meaning of unknown words from context, and use your downloaded dictionary to check. This is the bulk of your ‘lesson’. It will take anywhere from 10 to 30 minutes.

3. Look at the exercises for the chapter. These are generally only a page long, and won’t take you longer than 10 minutes to do. Do them carefully!

4. If you have the time, read the corresponding section of Fabellae Latinae. It will be very easy to understand already, and should only take 5 minutes or so!

5. Repeat this each day with the next chapter. There are 35 chapters. Spend 1 day on each of the chapters 1-10 and two days on each of the chapters 11-35. If you can still get one of the later chapters done in a single day, repeat it the next day for a really strong Latin ability.

Notes

You will initially think of what you read in terms of English. This is perfectly normal when you learn a new language! After about chapter 10, you will naturally stop translating in your head and accept the word you see in its original Latin. This is a good sign that you are beginning to develop some good ability with the language.

Remember to restrain yourself each day. If you find the work easy, don’t rush into the next day’s tasks! Take it slow so you don’t burn out. Work out how much time you are willing to spend each day on Latin and stick to it.

This is an intense course, although it builds up from nothing gradually. If you can get through it, you will be almost at the same level as a first year college Latin student. Not bad! You might want to spend more than 2 months, in which case, spend more time on each chapter accordingly.

Finally… Good luck! Feel free to comment if you want any support or extra tips!

Opinion article about the DREAM act, its benefits and the justice it would create.

The Development, Relief and Education for Alien Minors is a bill first introduced in 2001 and last reintroduced early 2011.

If passed, the bill would provide conditional residency to illegal alien minors who complete at least two years in a bachelor’s or higher degree program or serve in the Armed Forces for at least two years.

In order to qualify, a minor must have arrived in the country before his or her 15th birthday and lived in the United States for at least five years preceding the DREAM’s enactment. The minor must be attending a university or have earned a high school diploma or General Education Development certificate.

The bill has been proposed 13 times in the past 11 years. Politicians and immigrants are still struggling to pass the bill.

Children have no choice when illegally entering the country with their parents. They face the fear of deportation every day from the country they have lived in for more than half their lives.

Crime rates and economic climates in Central-American countries have kept illegal aliens in the United States. Although they are not legal, they feel safer here than in their native country.

A perfect argument for passing the DREAM Act is the case of Daniela Pelaez, a valedictorian at North Miami High who dreams of becoming a heart surgeon. She will graduate this year with a 6.7 GPA, but is uncertain about her college plans because of her immigration status.

Pelaez’s parents brought her and her sister from Colombia to the United States in 1991, when she was four years old. Her parents divorced and Pelaez now lives with her father, who is a resident. She was denied residency and was issued an order of voluntary deportation.

After many court debates, an immigration judge granted her a temporary deferment for two years without fear of deportation.

According to the Immigration Policy Center, only five to 10 percent of undocumented high-school graduates go to college. Without financial aid or in-state tuition, it is extremely difficult for them to attend a university.

The country can benefit from people like Pelaez, who will help the community when she becomes a professional.

Removing the uncertainty of undocumented status, the DREAM Act can provide an opportunity for children of illegal aliens to make a contribution to the U.S. economy and society.

Asian American males are starting to turn the other direction.

Many of you may not have noticed, many of you might not even care but the fact is this, more and more Asian American males are dating outside their race. As an Asian American male, I can confidently say “Go Get’em Tiger”. I have nothing against the Asian American female as I am in a serious relationship with one as we speak but the fact is, more and more Asian American males are turning to other ethnicities besides the Asian American female (Reasons why will be in another article)

As we all know the ratio of Asian American woman with Caucasian men compared to Asian American Males with Caucasian woman is 2193:1, but that’s because Asian American men are dating other races besides the Caucasian woman. In 2011, a scale was shown to determine the dating aspect ratios for the average run-of-the-mill Asian American and statistics showed that Latin and Asian American woman and Asian American men are most compatible.

44% of Asian American men were dating Asian American girls, while a staggering 56% dated Latin American woman. This goes to show that Latin American woman and Asian American men have a lot in common. After reviewing this graph I needed to do an interview and see who was asking who out first, who made the first move that is. I’ve asked a total of 21 participants (10 Asian American Males dating Latin American Females and 11 Latin American Females dating Asian American Males) individually from my University regarding their relationship.

12 out of 9 men and woman all concluded that the Latin American woman made the first move! This goes to show that the Asian American male must step up in the dating game.

Lingua Latina is truly a godsend to those of us who are learning Latin. I highly recommend you buy the book, as nothing quite replaces the feel of paper pages in one's hands. However, if you would like to see what you are buying beforehand and have no bookshop to browse first, try this.

You need a 4shared.com account first. If you don’t have one, it’s free to sign up, and they don’t send you spam. I signed up two years ago and have yet to receive any emails from them except the account registration one.

Go to http://www.4shared.com/folder/nU1h9LoF/Lingua_Latina_Per_Se_Familia_R.html or Google search for Lingua Latina 4shared.

It is broken up into 5 parts, each about 100mb. Download all of them and make sure they’re all in the same folder in your computer (like all on the desktop).

Begin unzipping the first part. You’ll need a program like winzip if you can’t unzip, but don’t worry, unzipping programs are small and free. Download the first one Google suggests. Once it’s installed, on a PC, you merely need to right-click on the first part of Lingua Latina and then left-click on the option that says “unzip”, “extract”, or similar.

As long as they are all in the same place, your computer will unzip all of them and automatically combine them into one program for you. The final thing will be about 467mb. You can install this program, but I found it much easier to:

Read the pages of the book (in a newly created folder called “pages”)

Listen to the spoken narration as I read (audio files in a folder called “latmedia”)

I put several of the audio files on my iPod and listened to them on the bus as I read the book. I cannot recommend this product enough, it makes learning Latin easy and straight-forward. Every chapter you know exactly how much you’ve learnt.

Latin carries with it the distinction of the educated, the well-read, the intelligent. How hard is this language actually going to be if you want to learn it? Here we give a quick overview and provide links to helpful sites.

Latin: the language of great men.

Or so people perceive. Whether or not there is any truth in this, people think it and will continue to think it for some time. But how hard is it really?

If your first language is Romantic (English, French, Italian, Spanish, etc.) then that helps a lot. Basically, there are three apsects of the language you need to learn.

1. Grammar

Many people find grammar to be the hardest part of Latin, due to the way it is traditionally taught. With the right attitude and course, however, grammar is not a problem. You know how the words “me” and “I” mean the same thing, but we change the word depending on how it’s used? Like “house” and “houses”, or “mouse” and “mice”. The same applies in Latin. Depending on how a word is used, it can change. Fortunately, the third point below will make this easy to pick up.

2. Vocabulary

85% of words in Latin are covered by a 1400 word vocabulary (all of which is listed here). Sounds like a lot, right? They are all listed here, and only about 400 are completely new words. The rest are words like “in” (in), “leo” (lion), and “animal” (animal). These are very easy to learn. If you learn 20 words a day (very easy considering that most of them are almost exactly the same as English!), then in two months you will have a good basic vocabulary.

A “full” vocabulary is about 10000-12000 words. This takes much longer to build up to, but again, once you have the basic vocabulary, the meaning of many words can be guessed from context, and your vocabulary will grow exponentially. You just have to get started.

3. Read

The more you read, the better you get. It’s as simple as that. There are many easy Latin readers designed for beginners, many of which are free online. As you read more and more, your vocabulary and grammar will both improve. Reading constantly is the key to learning Latin quickly. Even 10 minutes a day will have a huge effect.

With a little work each day, say half an hour, you can learn basic Latin in two months. If you keep at it, you can have a high level of extensive Latin in between six months and a year. It’s not hard at all, it just takes consistency. That, for most people, is the most difficult thing about learning Latin, especially as they begin. All it takes is a constant but small amount of work and the language is yours.

If you don’t want to learn Latin but just want to know what it is like, or if you do want to learn and want a head start, try Learn Latin in 5 Minutes. For more information, go to So You Want to Learn Latin, and good luck with your studies!

Ever wonder where our words come from?

The Angles, Saxons and the Jutes had a profound effect on the development of the English language, an impact that set the stage for further evolution of the language. Their invasion during the fifth century A.D. effectively began an inclination that has almost completely eradicated the native Celtic language. However, according to one source, Gaelic usage began its decline in the beginning of the thirteenth century. Scottish Gaelic then became known as “Highland Gaelic” to represent the location of native speakers of the language. The English language, as set forth by the Anglo-Saxon period (or Old English) was called “Angl-isc,” and was deeply connected to its Germanic origins. This period did not however, ensure the language had been static throughout the ages, and we can explore the evolution of the English Language in distinct phases. The Old English period (449-1100), the Middle Enlgish period (1100-1500), bear a stark contrast to the Modern English period (1500-present) in terms of spelling and phonetic difference. Consideration is given here to the interpretation of Chaucer’s writings in comparison to modern understandings.

The English language, as we know it today is barely recognizable from its Germanic roots, and the modern reader may experience some difficulty interpreting the meaning from the terminology of most people living from 1100 through the 1500’s. This era, in terms of language development and evolution, is characterized by what is termed “Middle English.” This epoch utilized certain aspects of French vocabulary, and we can see evidence of this throughout the works of Chaucers’ famed “Canterbury Tales,” and other masterpieces.

Many of the modifications are trivial, and are easily identifiable by applying spelling and pronunciation differences, for example; “younge sonne,” “melodye,” and “slepen nyght;” however, some terms are not so easy to determine meaning or context for the casual reader, including; “durste,” “clepe,” and the term “I wot.”

The easily recognizable terms that were prominent in Chaucer’s era are words still in use today, and do still bear some resemblance to the Middle English form. Oftentimes, the reader can discern the context by analyzing the other words within the same sentence or line of poetry. The term “younge sonne” even to the casual reader is readily identifiable to refer to a “young son.” Similarly, “melodye,” can be translated as “melody.” These are good examples of this phonetic resemblance; it would appear that only the spellings are altered. Even, the term “slepen nyght,” can still be identified as referring to “sleeping night,” in spite of the visual differences between the Middle and Modern versions by simply uttering the words aloud. Therefore, readers of Chaucer and other Middle English authors can faithfully rely on their acquired knowledge of phonetics, vocabulary and word recognition to assist them with comprehension and thus, decipher context from the reading.

With that said, many words circulating during this time are no longer used today or “has become obsolete or has changed its meaning over the centuries.” Many of the terms have ambiguous meanings, or have differing meanings for differing contexts. One such situation occurs when attempting to decipher the meaning of the word “durst.” The Concise Dictionary of Middle English offers several synonyms for “durst,” ranging from “I dare,” to “dear.” Michael Murphy, a scholar who has extensively researched Middle to Modern translations, and who has specifically concerned himself with the work of Chaucer, proclaims the proper interpretation of “dare” is a more accurate clarification of Chaucer’s’ writing. Murphy’s work can be found online here; http://academic.brooklyn.cuny.edu/webcore/murphy/canterbury/1intro.pdf

There seems to be less disagreement with the term “clepe,” and is taken to mean to “call.” The Concise Dictionary of Middle English however, defines the term as a similar verb, translating as “recall.” Alphadictionary.com is in agreement with Murphys’ translation and clarifies that “clepe” means to call out a name.

The third term to be discussed, “I wot” seems to have derived from Shakespearian old English, and means, “I know,” and once again, is in agreement with Murphys’ analysis.

Probably the best evidence to explain changes in pronunciations is a trend that has been termed “The Great Vowel Change,” which began in “the twelfth century and continuing until the eighteenth century.” However, the most prominent changes occurred during the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries. Harvard University scholars maintain this change occurred because “Old and Middle English were written in the Latin alphabet and the vowels were represented by the letters assigned to the sounds in Latin.” Consequently, there had been an increased awareness that there was a need to create a new alphabet, because “the pronunciation of English had moved so far from its visual representation.” The sixteenth century saw the beginning of the English language reformation, a movement that scholars at Harvard insist, is “still active today.” (L. D. Benson) The Great Vowel Change had a huge impact on Chaucers’ writings.

Michael Murphy points out that the changes that ensued in the English language were not consistent. Words that once rhymed in Chaucer’s poetry suddenly were no longer phonetically similar. For example, when Chaucer was writing, the words “hood,” “blood,” and “mood,” all rhymed with one another, as did “save,” “heart,” and “convert,” and we can see that the “most observable shift [is evident in the vowels] from o to u.” (Murphy)

If the Harvard scholars are correct, and that the evolution of the English language is a continual process then we may never find a proper or standardized version. It is interesting to note that there are many variations of the language in use today, accounting for educational and cultural differences and the problem of ensuring a consistent form may be more complicated that scholars thought in the beginning of this project. There are generational differences in the way language is used in the current era, easily recognizable by the younger population using acrostics or “text talk” to convey a message.

To highlight this point, a quick “Google” search provides several results translating the Middle English term “wot” to “waste of time,” and given the artistic flair of language during the Old and Middle English period, it is difficult to determine whether Shakespeare and Chaucer would be amused or mortified by the contemporary changes in communication forms.

Those with a passive interest in languages will note that almost all Germanic and French influences, at least phonetically, are obsolete in the Modern form, yet we retain certain spelling similarities. However, even this is not consistent considering regional dialects and geographic location. It is assumed then, that the English language will continue to make changes and evolve until the end of time and will provide a continual source of study for language majors.

Essay writing is one of the activities or tasks in schools that professors and teachers use to both train and assess their students. Essays are used by professors as a training tool since it compels students to test or examine their ideas, research for information, and in the process absorb the knowledge they got from writing the essay. Essays are also used by professors as an assessment tool since it allows them to gauge the amount of knowledge a student has gained after a certain academic period. But if you think essay is only about writing, better think twice.

The most common and widely known form of essay is the literary, or the written type. However, throughout time, other non-literary forms of essay have come to life. Most known are visual arts, music, film and photography essays. There are people who contend that these other form of essay, cannot be called such because essays are supposedly written. For them, the only essay form they accept is the literary form, which has been here for the longest time.

They may have a point, but looking at the etymology of the word “essay,” this type of academic paper is not limited only to the written form. The term has its roots from the Latin word “exigere,” which means “test” or “examine.” According to Purdue Online Writing Lab, the essence of essay is to encourage the writer to test or examine his ideas regarding a particular topic. Examining one’s ideas is not limited to writing alone, but may also involve other forms. Thus, visual arts, music, film and photography essays are valid forms of this type of academic piece.

Let us try to discuss briefly these forms of essays. In the field of visual arts, an essay is usually done before making the final piece. The essay could be a preliminary drawing or sketch from which the artist will base or test his piece. In the field of music, one could convey his message to the listener through the form and content of the musical piece. One could also create film essays by concentrating on a central idea or them instead of focusing on a plot. Photography essays meanwhile, convey emotions, events and ideas through a collection or a series of images.

These are the only forms of essays that exist. But it is certain that their number will grow as technology progresses.

English, as any other modern language of Europe has assimilated many Latin words which has enriched its vocabulary. Researchers in the field of Etymology have estimated that about 60% of English words have come to us through Latin. These include prefixes, suffixes and root words. Now a question naturally arises that is it essential to master Latin to have an impressive English vocabulary? Not at all. You will be surprised as I will show you shortly that even a knowledge of a few words of Latin can do wonders and can boost your vocabulary to the limit you cannot imagine. In this article I am introducing just a few of prefixes and we shall see how it increases our ability to understand the words in English which at first sight seem very difficult. For instance we take a few important prefixes and observe the result.

ab, a (from, down, away, Latin) = abstract, aversion, abject, abnormal.
ante (before, Latin) = antecedent, antebellum,antemeridian(A.M).
bi (two, Latin) = bicycle, bifurcate, bicarbonate.
circum, circa ( around, about, Latin) = circa 1900, circumambulate, circumference.
contra, counter (against, Latin) = contraindication, contradict, counterbalance
di, dis, dif (away, from, apart, Latin) = disinfectant, disperse, different.
extra ( beyond, Latin) = extraordinary, extraneous.
inter (among, between, Latin) = international, intercept, intervention.
intra, intro (within, inside of, Latin) = introspection, intravenous.
multi, multus (many, much, Latin) = multifaceted, multitudinous, multistory.
omni (all, everywhere, Latin) = omnipotent, omnivorous, omniscient.
post (after, behind, Latin) = postdated, posthumous, postmeridian ( P.M).
pre (before, Latin) = precedent, precept, preposition.
re (back, again, Latin) = rejuvenate, recreate, regeneration, renaissance
retro (back, backward, Latin) = retrospect, retro running, retrograde.
se (apart, aside, Latin ) = seclusion, selection, separation.
sub (under, less than, inferior, Latin) = subordinate, subterranean, submarine.
super, supra (above, superior, Latin) = superfluous, superintendent, soprano.
trans (across, through, Latin ) = translation, transcontinental, transient, transit.
ultra (beyond, on other side of ) = ultramodern, ultra orthodox, ultrasound.

The above list contains only 20 prefixes out of hundreds in use in contemporary English. You must have observed that in no time you can decipher the meanings of hundreds of words which you hitherto have believed to be a very tedious activity. This is the magic of knowing Latin. Even a cursory knowledge of this language can do wonders for you and you can be much more confident next time you have an interview, a meeting or just a chit chat with your friends.
