You just interviewed for a job and you haven't heard anything. Sometimes this is a sign of bad news, and sometimes it isn't. You want to follow up and find out what's going on, but you don't want to be annoying. Here's how to handle this situation effectively.

A friend of mine is currently in this position, and asked me how I’d word a follow-up email. When I tried to come up with something, I realized I hadn’t written one in many years and my skills were a bit rusty. So, I asked the internet for some help and got some good advice. Most agreed on a very simple process.

Send a Thank-you Note Immediately After the Interview

Most people suggest sending a thank you note right away, via snail mail, as it takes a few days to arrive and serves as a positive reminder to get back to you. My sister, Ali, had a few good suggestions for its content:

I almost always will send snail mail to thank them for their time and let them know how nice it was to meet them. I say (if I believe it to be to true) what a nice environment they created for the interview/audition. And I say simply at the end, “I hope to see you again soon.”

It’s pretty simple, but very effective. The problem with calling or writing to ask for more information is that you’re essentially reminding them that they forgot to do something. Although it is legitimate to send this reminder, there’s a decent chance they’ll be annoyed that they have to deal with you (if they didn’t like you) or at least feel bad for ignoring you (if they did). A thank you note is simply a polite and positive reminder that you exist. It will help your interviewer(s) want to get back to you.

Still need some help writing that thank you note? Here’s one quick and effective method.

Send a Short, Polite Email to Check In

When you’ve finished your interview, you’ll often be told when you can expect to hear back. If not, that’s a question you should ask before the conversation is over. If that amount of time passes and you haven’t heard anything, it’s reasonable to call or write to check in. An email is less-intrusive and won’t put your interviewer on the spot, so it is generally a better way to ask the question. David Hill suggests that email contain two things:

I usually confine it to email and make it a quick note – thank them again for the interview and ask if there’s been an update/any movement on the position. If they respond, you can usually get a feel for whether you’re annoying the shit out of them.

Deanna Parkton suggests asking the interviewer if they need any additional qualifications or information so your message has an additional, helpful purposes as well.

Regardless of what you decide to do, be sure to keep it short. Here’s an example (based on a suggestion from Lifehacker intern alumni Aaron Martin):

[Interviewer],

I just wanted to follow up in regards to my interview on [date — or "last week"]. Do you have an update, or do you need any further information from me? Please let me know when you have a free moment.

Thank you,
[Your Name]

Of course, this might be a bit formal. You’ll want to make the note sound like you and be as formal or casual as is appropriate for the situation. Either way, the content is pretty straightforward and only takes a few seconds to put together.

It can be a little nerve-wracking to ask for an update when you were supposed to hear back, as it feels like you’re asking for bad news, but that isn’t always the case. If you get bad news, there will be other job opportunities, but sometimes you’ll find out that the company needed an extra day because another interview was postponed or they simply haven’t had time to get back to everyone. You never know, and that’s why you ask.

When I write letters, I am glad to have such a platform as triond on which to post. Posting letters is far quicker than snail mail (or even email sometimes, since things can get lost among the tons of spam we get in our inboxes all the time.)

I came to triond with the intent to reach into people’s lives and share my experiences and knowledge, but then I found that more than just reaching out to a wide audience of strangers, I could also make friends and reach out from even the longest distances to the people in my life that mean the most to me.

For all it’s quirkiness and sometimes being annoying, triond has still been awesome to me.

We should all count our blessings.

Verbal bullying seems to be on the rise. It may, of course, be simply a matter of heightened awareness. There are ways for students and parents to take decisive action to stop verbal bullying. Learning these techniques and applying them will prove quite helpful for students, parents and schools alike.

By Joan Whetzel

Bullying, especially verbal bullying has become a hot topic these days. Either because more people are reporting it or because we’re simply paying more attention. These verbal abusers make use of psychological bullying, verbal bullying, or cyber bullying to isolate students who, for whatever reason, don’t blend in or measure up. These students are usually picked on because of the way they look, the way they behave (with shyness topping the list), or other factors such as race, religion, or sexual orientation. Psychological bullying includes exclusion and gossip. Verbal bullying consists of taunting and teasing. Cyber bullying involves hateful Instant Messaging (IM), e-mails, or website and social networking posts. Since these are all forms of verbal abuse, they leave no visible external scars, which makes it difficult for teachers and parents to spot. Compounding the problem is that victimized students may be too afraid to call attention to the problem. When verbal bullying occurs – or is suspected by teachers or parents – it is important to know that there are many techniques to help put a stop to it.

FOR STUDENTS

Tell an Adult

Understand that the longer the verbal abuse is allowed to continue, the move violent it will become. It will not stop until you stand up for yourself. The first step is to tell an adult that you trust what’s going on. This may be a teacher, school counselor, parent, or some other adult relative, even a neighbor. Adults have the authority and resources to get things done that are not available to young people. They can bolster your courage, making it possible for you to aid in your own defense. They can also help you find a few techniques that you may not have thought of before. Together, you and any adults on your side, can find ways to stop the bullying.

Document Everything!

Grab a spiral notebook and begin recording everything the bully does. For each new entry, write a date and time, than a summary of what occurred. Keep incidents in chronological order as much as possible. If you have a cell phone or digital camera, take pictures as necessary.

Save any handwritten notes or letters, and electronic messages in the forms of e-mails, voicemails, text messages and IMs. These are all time and date stamped by your computer and cell phone, and can be used in any proceedings held by the school, school district, or in a court of law (should it go that far). Any photos taken on your camera or cell phone, can be uploaded to your computer and saved in a file. Just be sure to include dates, times and 3 to 5 word description of the picture that you can cross reference with your incident journal (spiral notebook).

If the bully calls you at home, make use of your home answering machine. If you don’t have one, ask your parents to get one. There are many inexpensive models. Any messages left on an answering machine are also admissible in court.

For face-to-face confrontations, if you have a small portable mini-tape recorder or if your cell phone can tape conversations, make use of these gadgets. Be forewarned, though, that recording someone without their knowledge or consent is usually not admissible in court. It will be beneficial, however in proving your case to the school and school district personnel.

Avoid Being Alone

Bullies love to pick on kids who are loners, but tend to steer clear of kids in groups. Try to make at least one or two friends, and stick with any friends as much as possible. It’ll help you feel less isolated and alone, and it will make you less of a target for bullies.

Ignore the Bully

Standing up to bullies in a face-to-face confrontation frequently ends in failure. Once a bully engages you, the longer he or she keeps you engaged, the more likely it is that he can find the one thing that you fear the most.

And then he’s got you hooked. Any time a bullies begins verbally attacking you, your first and best defense is to ignore them. Pretending not to hear them and walking away denies bullies of the fear factor that they were hoping to instill in you. Bullies thrive on the fear of their victims. So if you show no fear, the bullies’ tactics lose all their power. Ignoring them and walking away takes a lot of courage, and it’s easier than confrontation.

Don’t get physical

Getting angry or fighting back is as bad as, or worse than verbal confrontations. Bullies frequently roam in packs. So any victim – who has been chosen because they travel alone – will not win in a physical confrontation. Fighting back on a physical level, will not only result in you getting injured, it may well antagonize the bullies, which usually leads to an escalation of abuse. Bullies usually lose interest when their targeted victim fails to react with anger or fear. Not becoming angry and showing no fear translate to self-confidence, at least in the eyes of the bullies. Which brings me to my last point here – Be Confident.

Be confident

Periodically, go over your incident journal as well as the handwritten notes and any digital or recorded messages. Look for trends in the verbal assaults. Write down some words that you can use to respond to the bullies that show your self-confidence. Get an adult or a friend to help you write your scripted remarks. Practice saying them in private. The next time the bully demands your attention in a face-to-face confrontation, deliver your lines. Then turn on your heals and walk away. They’ll be too shocked to respond, and chances are good, they won’t be prepared with a comeback. Sooner or later, they’ll lose interest since it’s no fun bullying a “victim” who isn’t afraid of them.

FOR PARENTS

Helping Your Child Collect Evidence

Once it has come to your attention that your child is being bullied, the first thing you need to do is to bolster their confidence. Next help them set up ways to collect evidence of the bullying. Get them a spiral notebook and show them how to set it up to record every incident as it occurs. Set up folders on any computers your child has access to and save electronic and voice messages in these files. Set up a physical file to store handwritten notes and letters as well as photos. Uploading digital photos to the computer is relatively easy; most kids can understand how to do it once they’ve been shown. Photos can be stored in a computer file and printed out as needed. Use either printer paper or printer photo paper, which is a little more expensive, but may be worth it for some photos as the photo paper shows details better than regular printer paper.

Talk to the principal early on, even before you have the evidence of the bullies’ abuse. Let the principal know that you are helping your child collect evidence of the abuse and would be glad to show the principal what you have. Being able to show evidence of the verbal abuse will bolster your case when you take it to the school, or the school district should the school fail to help you. Provide the principal and school district with copies of your evidence, not the originals. Any recorded messages – voicemails and answering machine messages – can be recorded to CDs.

Using an Answering Machine

If the bully is calling your child at home, set up an answering machine on your home phone, and make sure your home phone has caller ID. Let the answering machine pick up and record the bullies’ messages. Anyone leaving a message on the answering machine or on a cell phone voicemail system cannot claim that they did not know they were being recorded. These are considered legal recordings.

Let your family and friends know that you will be using an answering machine for a while, and why this step is necessary. They will be understanding and patient while you work through this. (They may even have a few helpful ideas for you.) If the phone calls are frequent and particularly ugly, contact the phone company. Most phone companies are more than happy to work with their customers when it comes to abusive phone calls. If you have recorded some of the calls, play these for the phone company, or provide them with a CD of the messages left on your answering machine. Most phone companies will trace and record these threatening calls if they feel the abuse and threats have warrant such action

Contacting the School

Make an initial contact with the principal, up front. Let him or her know that a problem exists and that you will be helping your child collect records of the abuse. Let the principal know that you would be happy to provide copies of everything you collect – even the log entries from your child’s incident journal. Be specific about the types of verbal abuse that is being aimed at your child – confrontations or insults on school property, handwritten notes, e-mails, IMs, social networking posts, voicemails, text messages, and answering machine messages.

Ask the principal what the school will be doing about the situation. Schools are required to take action once bullying and threats have been brought to their attention. Parents should expect the school and school district to take such threats seriously. Hold regular meetings with the principal, daily, weekly, or twice weekly if necessary. Provide them with the evidence as promised and ask what is being done to protect your child, and give them time adequate time to take action.

If the school administration cannot, or will not, do anything to stop the bullying, then take it up the food chain to the school district. Again provide them with the evidence of bullying and evidence that you tried to work with the school administration, but failed. Give the school district time to take action. If this fails then consider taking legal action. Legal action should be your last recourse, not your first response.

Keeping children safe at school is top priority for both parents and the schools that their children attend. Helping children find ways to protect themselves is part of the solution. The other part of the solution is for parents and schools to work together to stop the bullying in its tracks.

Most of our lives are not some major drama, but I believe that each life has a story worth telling. I don’t often write about the “up to the minute” details of my life, I find often that this can be an arduous task. Primarily because what I think are key points in my life may seem rather mundane to others.

What I have shared about my life, my faith, and my art are very important aspects of my life. I write only what I know, and hope with the deepest sincerity that that’s enough.

Because life is not action packed like the movies, I may not always hold the readers attention. I am sure if I were a secret agent rather than an artist, I’d have much more colorful stories to tell.

I however offer up the person that I am, to be hopefully an inspiration to others, and to leave something of eternal worth to my readers.

Thank you all who grace me daily with your readership and friendships as well.

Interesting way to use numbers as letters.

Numbers as letters — is called LEET

You are most likely familiar with numbers being used to implicate letters, phrases or even symbols. In SMS (txting) shortcuts, for instance, 2 can also be used for “to”, 4 can mean “for” and the 8 spells “eat” in gr8, meaning great. This is called SMSish or textese or simply SMS language..

When numbers instead of letters are used to spell a whole word it is called leet – which, in leet, is written as 1337. Another example is n00b, a term for newbie. Andsoforth..

Leet originated in the 1980s in relay chat services and on bulletin boards. If you look at it for the first time it might seem difficult to understand but you’ll be surprised how quickly you will catch it. Train your brain with this example of leet:

7H15 M3554G3
53RV35 7O PR0V3
H0W 0UR M1ND5 C4N
D0 4M4Z1NG 7H1NG5!
1MPR3551V3 7H1NG5!
1N 7H3 B3G1NN1NG
17 WA5 H4RD BU7
N0W, 0N 7H15 LIN3
Y0UR M1ND 1S
R34D1NG 17
4U70M471C4LLY
W17H 0U7 3V3N
7H1NK1NG 4B0U7 17,
B3 PROUD! 0NLY
C3R741N P30PL3 C4N
R3AD 7H15.

Glad you caught that! As you’ve noticed, you can also combine the use of leet, textese and normal spelling or even morph it..

Make your children love to read.

“Books are the windows to the world“. This illustrates the importance of reading to increase our insight, but it is not uncommon to encounter people who do not like reading. Cultivate the Reading Interest in Children. This is not something that can not be prevented, because parents can arouse interest in reading by reading stories to children.

Reading is the most important skills for someone, because it can open up insights into a lot of knowledge. Millions of children who spend time in front of the TV or video games often fail to improve their reading skills. That they fail to learn many valuable things.

Parents play an active role to help their young children to master reading skills in order to avoid problems later on in education at school. This could begin with a simple and making it part of the routine in the life of a child. Thus he can master the ability to read even before entering school.

When Start Teaching Reading?

The best time to start is as early as possible. When the baby is born, try to start talking to your baby. Remember that he is learning a “foreign language” so need all the help you can provide. Words of love and all verbal communication is not only convince your affection to the baby, but also introduced him to remain a foreign language course she was studying.

In the first process, the baby will only learn from the voice alone, and this could take place since the womb. Then when he began to see the surroundings, you can use visual aids such as toys that can make it learn and play.

How to Teach Reading to Children from Early

Begin by showing one or two letters are brightly colored. Such devices are widely available in toy stores. Use these letters as a toy for the baby, but you can be a little stress to the baby by naming the letter to him every time he observed the letter. Increment one letter in a land as he has grown.

Once the child knows all the letters, the next step is to introduce the letters in the proper order. When he started talking, ask him to mention the letters in the order from left to right.

Once a child is to recognize all the letters, start with the familiar words began to teach. One of the best ways is by introducing its name. For example by arranging the letters that form his name. Then the parents say the arrangement of letters as well as name. When he began to smoothly pronounce his name, add another word that is easily understood as a father, mother, or another word. Do all these things in a relaxed condition and also in the mood to play.

In addition, you also can read a story in a book that has pictures with bright colors. The children will be more accustomed to reading if you often read an interesting book to your child is still small. Thus it will increasingly understand that the letters arranged into words and words that have special meaning.

Benefits of Reading Stories for Children

Therefore, how to teach children to be interested to read? The trick is to read the story since they were born since even in the womb. Some of the benefits of reading to children include:

a. Instilling a love of children to read books. With an avid reader of course will add to knowledge of children.

b. Make children become more calm and comfortable. Because parents’ voices are heard in the womb usual, then when you hear the child feel more comfortable.

c. Helping children recognize words and sentences. When parents read a story, children will hear the words you speak. This will add to its vocabulary, help her to know the meaning of words and sentences.

d. Convey a moral message to children. The books are devoted to children, usually contains a moral message about to be delivered so that it can be a medium to tell the children what good and bad things.

e. Improving parent-child emotional relationship. Reading stories can make children feel cared for. You can also read a story with a hug or physical contact so that children feel loved.

A paper written discussing the Zodiac killer of San Francisco, the novel, and the movie.

The Zodiac: astrological, a set of codes, watch brand

or a serial killer?

The Zodiac a serial killer who obtained this killer identity from a watch and astrological aspects, but also was able to elude police for many years by sending letters in code that was actually part of a zodiac code. None of the aspects were his original ideas, but the killer was able to cleverly weave those aspects into his own particular identity. Zodiac became the most famous serial killer throughout history due to his ability to elude police. With no solid evidence against the Zodiac police were not able to make any official arrests. The Zodiac continued to covering his tracks through each murder by making sure there were no finger prints, solid foot prints, as well as keeping his identity hidden by his elaborate disguise.

The Zodiac was able to kill and stay on the run from the mid 1960s till he decided to quit sending letters in 1974. He earned a reputation that seemed to fascinate everyone. The San Francisco Police Department received letters from the Zodiac which did not match any hand writing samples obtained from over “2500 suspects”. With that many suspects the SFPD had so many people to investigate it was difficult for them to keep up with each one. Not only was that an issue but the SFPD had so many people claiming that they were the Zodiac that it added to the confusion of eliminating suspects. The SFPD also feared that some would become ‘copy cat killers’ simply because of the Zodiac’s ability to elude police. With so many suspects and people claiming they were the Zodiac, he decided he needed to prove his was legit by including in letters and cards portions of clothing that was torn from his victims that contained blood.

The Zodiac wrote many letters to police stating the murders that he had committed and then further, listing further his intentions. In the Zodiac’s first letter he had killed at least five people that the police knew of, “but claimed responsibility for as many as 17 murders” (9). However, the Zodiac was an obviously knowledgeable man because he would write introducing himself at the beginning of his letters “This is the Zodiac speaking” which suggested that he wanted and craved attention. While he always introduced himself some portions of his letters in code that would have to be deciphered. The code itself was taken from a Zodiac code. Through the coded messages, Zodiac sent scares upon San Francisco, one of the letters stated that he would “shoot the tires off of a school bus and pick the kiddies off one by one as they came bouncing off the bus.” With letters such as this and being from one page to six pages long, often times they contained words misspelled that was only common with the Zodiac. This was one way to tell which ones true Zodiac letters and which were fake letters were sent to police. The Zodiac also enjoyed sending letters mostly to The Chronicle a local newspaper in order to obtain his fame through the headlines. With this letters he portrayed a strong hatred toward police that were often was portrayed toward individual staff of the newspaper. As things progressed he sent threats to these individual people. This portrayed the evident game that the Zodiac enjoyed playing with individuals as well as how he viewed killing. The killings were viewed as a large game. In Graysmith’s novel the author goes into depth on how the Zodiac discussed and possibly used “The Most Dangerous Game” as a motive to killing. This was a movie that came out around the time that the Zodiac began his killings and discussed how the most dangerous game for a hunter was to hunt humans not animals. The Zodiac even included in his letters that he was having fun and that “killing is fun.”

Murders of the Zodiac

· Cheri Jo Bates, 18, Riverside City College October 30, 1966

· Betty Lou Jensen 16, and David Faraday 17, Vallejo CA, December 20, 1968

· Zodiac sent a letter where 5 killings were known to be committed by him, but admitted to 17+ that were unknown.

· Darlene Ferrin, 22, Vallejo CA, near Blue Rock Springs July 4th, 1969

· Cecelia Ann Shepard, 22 a lake near Napa Ca, September 29, 1969

· Paul Stine 29, cab driver in Presidio Heights San Francisco, October 11, 1969. (The last known killing)

· The Zodiac letters continued till 1974.

With the mysterious Zodiac killer investigators believe him to be a hater of women, but also someone who worked or dealt closely with children. Also it was determined from partial foot prints that the Zodiac was a member of the military due to the type of boots that were worn and the only access to them were to the military. With a part of the investigation done by a staff member at The Chronicle was the code books from the zodiac code. After finding out that the Zodiac was military personnel Graysmith checked into the libraries at military bases. He discovered that “all of the Zodiac code books had been stole from numerous libraries” (245); therefore, there was no record what so ever left behind to find who had checked these books out.

After discovering a military connection, the Zodiac sent a letter informing police that aviation glue had been placed on his fingertips to prevent identification based upon fingerprints; therefore, providing another link to the military. However a surviving male victim also described the Zodiacs costume and the intricate sewing work done of the executioner style hood. The one suspect that was determined to be the best match to the Zodiac was an avid skin diver, had military connections, was a pilot and was also known to sew his own sails for his boats. To further lead investigators to Author Leigh Allen was his connection to children through local schools where he worked as a janitor. Allen had all the connections and had also worked through several schools within several counties in California. Each time there were reports of him inappropriately touching students therefore he did not maintain a school related job for long periods of time.

With Allen having so many connections related to numerous counties in which the Zodiac killed, a broken job relationship at school systems police began interviewing him. By this time in the investigation, the Zodiac had become such a well known killer throughout California that the county police stations were competing against each other to catch the Zodiac; therefore, they would not cooperate with other investigators in order to solve the case. They began withholding information from each other and therefore delaying and preventing the actual capture of the Zodiac killer. Graysmith however, was able to realize that Allen while he had been arrested and in rehabilitation was the time frames in which the Zodiac seemed to go into hibernation and there were no letters, nor killings during that time period, which further implicated that he was the Zodiac killer.

The Zodiac killed for many years and continued to elude police, something that has blown the minds of people and investigators for decades. From the time the Zodiac began killing and sending messages police believed that they could quickly solve the murder, but he continued to stay one step ahead. However, according to Robert Graysmith he saw into the eyes of the killer when “he viewed Author Leigh Allen working at a small store” near the site where he killed a cab driver.

Since, the sting of killings by the Zodiac killer; several televised and print media about the Zodiac became well known throughout America. As of today there has been at least one killer who followed in the exact copy cat routine of the Zodiac. The Zodiac ‘copy cat killer’ (Heriberto “Eddie” Seda) murdered from 1990 to 1994 in New York; however, he is currently serving out 236 year term in prison. Seda was not as meticulous as the original Zodiac. The location of the Zodiac is unknown and it is uncertain as to if he is still alive or not; however I question, if the true Zodiac killed in 2010 would he be able to elude police like in the 1960s and 70s?

Some years ago I started graving for paper. After all those years of instant communication and electronic messages, the thought of getting a hand-written letter was almost too much to bear. But who would write letters these days?

It turns out, a lot of people still enjoy writing letters on actual paper, sticking them into envelopes and sending them off into the world with the help of real mail men. Not only do people send letters, they also enjoy creating “decos” and “FB’s”. Decos are little booklets, usually post card size that fit a normal envelope, that are decorated according to a theme. They can be really creative, although sadly a lot of them get lost along the way. The idea is that one person makes the booklet and decides on the theme, sends it off to the next person who decorates a page, who then sends it off to another and so forth until the booklet is full and can be returned to the address the creator specified. FB’s are similar, but non-artistic, FB stands for Friendship Booklet, and they have been around for ages. Each receiver enters their name and address if they want more pen pals and the booklet is sent on. Even if you are not looking for new friends, it is fascinating to see the “travel route” the booklet has taken to get to you.

For months I had a paper frenzy. I would get something around five letters a week, send off another five and make who knows how many decos and FB’s along the way. Then I hit a point of exhaustion. The thing that stopped my pen palling was probably the fact I moved to the other side of the world and there was a lot of new and exciting things to see again so pen palling lost some of it’s lustre. But there was another reason, too.

Sadly, I found that a lot of my penpals had emotional issues. Some of the stereotypes that you would imagine to be true about people who do penpalling around the age of 30 are true. I never even thought about it at first, but when the vast majority of my pals were in their 30s and still single living at home… You begin to wonder. The worst pal I had used to spend the entire letter describing the latest medical conditions she and her mother had suffered through since the latest letter. For a while I tried to ask her about other stuff, but the medical reports just kept coming. It sounded like what you would imagine getting visiting your grand mother, and I wasn’t old enough for that.

What I also found to be off putting was requests to send the senders stamps back so they could reuse them. To me that felt horribly rude – I understand that the cost builds up, but not only is the practise illegal, it’s still just few cents a letter.

I did make some excellent friends, too. Some dynamic, extremely creative people – one of them used to paint an A4-sized (approx what is called a letter size page in US) envelope every time before mailing it. And by painting I mean she painted a picture on the envelope, often a woman’s face in a different setting. They were breath taking.

I tell you all this so in case you are interested in starting up pen palling, you know to be a little cautious and state some wishes in your pen palling profile. Using a post box address is not a bad idea. Then, there’s another issue. If you want to use an online website to find pen pals, such as InterPals.net or Penpalworld.com, be aware that not everyone knows the difference between a pen pal site and a dating site. This can be super annoying, so be prepared. Also, if the idea of decos and fb’s tickle your fancy, you might consider looking for people who do specifically that, because it’s a lot of fun mixing up your deco -receivers rather than always using the same route. There are Yahoo groups for deco-loving people that you might want to check out. (If you want to send me a deco, contact me and we’ll sort it out. I haven’t decoed one for a long time, but… I miss them!)

Do you think you’ll be picking up a pen and deco some paper? If you’re creative and into scrap booking, you might enjoy the extension of your creative outlets.
