Potential employees should not have to undergo polygraph testing as an interview requirement due to the conflicting evidence of the test’s accuracy. The polygraph is intended to detect physiological changes in a person’s autonomic nervous system not an actual lie. Each individual will respond to certain stimuli differently causing the sympathetic nervous system to possibly portray systems of stress which the polygraph interprets as a lie. A number of different factors can cause the polygraph to record a truthful response as a lie in effect causing many potentially outstanding employees to fail.
