When people hear the word “hippie” they usually think of tie-dye wearing vegans who want to save the planet while smoking herbs and talking about life. While this may apply to a certain percentage of people who identify themselves as hippies, these traits are usually not absolutely necessary to make the cut. The Merriam-Webster dictionary defines “hippie” as: a usually young person who rejects the mores of established society (as by dressing unconventionally or favoring communal living) and advocates a nonviolent ethic. The word hippie is derived from the word hipster. It first came into common use at the start of the 1960’s and eventually came to refer to a participant or supporter of the era’s counterculture. This counter-cultural revolution, founded and fueled by those who became known as the “hippies”, was of an unprecedented magnitude in its following. Its radical deviation from the “working towards the future” attitude of their parents’ generation to their own “living in the present” was shocking to mainstream America. Their culture spread over the next half a century influencing many facets of life in America.

One of the reasons the hippie movement grew as quickly as it did was that because of the environment created by the war in Vietnam. The nation’s involvement in the Vietnam War was not looked upon favorably by the country’s youth, giving them a cause to /unite and a motive to join the counterculture. During the 1960s, America seemed to be heading in a good direction, shown by the victory of the civil rights movement with the passage of the Voting Rights Act of 1965. Not long after this, in 1967, the amount of U.S. troops in Vietnam increased from 385 to 500 thousand, creating tensions around the nation which eventually led to violence. (Braunstein & Doyle p.251) To the hippies, the Vietnam conflict represented everything that was wrong with their society, and all the reasons they had to reform it. The war acted as the unifying force for hippies by giving them all a common enemy. The hippies blamed the “maturity and denial of youth” for all of the violence and discrimination they fought against. For this reason, they fought by posing as “flower children”; peaceful, innocent, and young, mocking the aggression of the establishment. (Braunstein & Doyle p.252) The hippies’ style of fighting without violence made a statement against the norms of their society and their nation’s leaders.

Source

Another reason the movement grew at the rapid pace it did was that American youth at the time felt a natural duty to rebel against those in charge. They rebelled whenever needed in response to injustice; whether it was against parents, teachers, the government, the man, or society as a whole. Students at the University of California, Berkeley began the Free Speech Movement in the fall of 1964, triggered by a University ban on promoting off-campus political activist groups and causes on school grounds. After a year of opposing the University and their police with unprecedented protests, the students won. Their right to protest government activities, free speech, and academic freedom was returned with an acknowledgement of said rights. (Kaiser 153) Another way hippies rebelled against their parents and society was by abandoning their values and creating a lifestyle in complete opposition to them. While some saw the way the hippies’ lived their lives as self destructive, the hippies’ believed that living in the fashion of their parents, constantly being unhappy; working towards the future and towards living longer, was truly the self-destructive choice; a waste of life. “Valuing the future over the present… sustained the ‘rat race’ value system that prized lifelong competitiveness, materialism, and avarice” (Braunstein & Doyle p.257)

Source

In addition to the hippie movement’s major impact on its era, it had a great deal of influence in the years to follow. Their counterculture’s legacy was it’s influence on the arts and societal values. Many contemporary music styles were derived from those of the hippies and their movements’ most prominent artists. Some of the counterculture’s most prominent artists fought for equality simply by being themselves. Teens were seeing black artists like Jimi Hendrix, female ones like Grace Slick, and unattractive ones like Janis Joplin creating their favorite music and were becoming more accepting. The hippies advocated for the general acceptance of people by fighting for equality and putting great value on individuality and diversity. Haight Ashbury became a gathering place for hippies during the Summer of Love in 1967. Years later San Francisco has one of the highest gay populations in America and is a focal point of the gay rights movement. This universal tendency towards acceptance has found its way through the years into modern society. Another big hippie ideology passed on to our generation was their value of youth as a mental state and their resistance to maturity. During their brief time in the White House, “John F. Kennedy and First Lady Jacqueline spearheaded the youthful style and aesthetic that eventually became the zeitgeist of the decade.” The youth attitude of the love generation created a culture in which adults started trying to look young and hip like their children instead of kids trying to look old and mature like their parents. (Braunstein & Doyle p.245). In America especially, the youth define the culture; adults pick up on trends such as social networking and texting from their children instead of children picking up trends from adults. The counterculture of the 60’s contributed positively to the generations that followed it through its musical contributions and values.

Source

The hippie counterculture grew a large following to its radical belief system whose influence can still be seen today. If it were not for the hippie movement, our world today would lack a lot of great music and a lot of the progress our culture has made towards equality and acceptance. The hippies were a group who fought for a future they believed in, one of peace and love. Although some hippie’s just liked to party hard and continued to vote for republicans who opposed hippie values, for the most part their intentions were good and their efforts a partial success. The hippie counterculture proved to be one of the most unique societal rebellions ever.

Are digital drugs the new high?

Every parent tells their child not to experiment with drugs and that they can do harmful things to your body. But what if there was a drug that only required headphones? This new “digital drug” is called binaural beats and is easily accessible through the Internet, App Store, and Android Market. According to i-dose.us, binaural beats “alter moods, behavior, even consciousness”. All across the Web you can find many different binaural beats that supposedly put you in a different state of being. Your probably wondering how the technology behind this even works, which is why I’m here. When you listen to a binaural beat, your hearing two different frequencies in each ear which affects your brainwaves. In doing this, your brain is set to a different frequency which leads to physical stimulation.

Now, they even have binaural beats that are supposed to imitate the effects of real drugs. Does this digital drug have any health risks? Apparently not. No deaths nor injuries have been reported due to binaural beats, but the frequency may cause people who have epilepsy to have a seizure(who knew?). Neurologist’s have been studying the matter to see if there could be any possible health benefits. As far as it working as a recreational drug, mixed claims can be found on most drug forums or You-Tube videos. This topic is definitely one to keep an eye on since people are always desperate for a cheap and safe high, so it definitely has the ability to rise in popularity. If you have any questions or comments, leave them below.

A biography of Ivan Pavlov.

Ivan Pavlov

Ivan Pavlov was a Russian physiologist whose research on the physiology of digestion led to the development of the first experimental model of learning, Classical Conditioning. Most of his research was gathered studying salivating dogs. Pavlov was born on September 14, 1849, at Ryazan, Russia. Because he was born into a large family, poverty was always an issue. His father, Peter Dmitrievich Pavlov, was the village priest and young Ivan tended to the church property. Pavlov inherited many of his father’s characteristics including a strong will to succeed.

Pavlov abandoned his religious career and decided to devote his life to science. In 1870 he enrolled in the physics and mathematics faculty at the University of Saint Petersburg to take the course in natural science. In 1875 Pavlov completed his course with an outstanding record and received the degree of Candidate of Natural Sciences. However, impelled by his overwhelming interest in physiology, he decided to continue his studies and proceeded to the Academy of Medical Surgery. He received his doctorate in 1878 and completed the third course in 1879, again being awarded a gold medal. After a competitive examination, Pavlov won a fellowship at the Academy, and this together with his position as Director of the Physiological Laboratory at the clinic of

the famous Russian clinician, S. P. Botkin, enabled him to continue his research work. In 1883 he presented his doctor’s thesis on the subject of The centrifugal nerves of the heart. In this work he developed his idea of “nervism”, using as example the intensifying nerve of the heart which he had discovered, and furthermore laid down the basic principles on the trophic function of the nervous system. In this as well as in other works, resulting mainly from his research in the laboratory at the Botkin clinic, Pavlov showed that there existed a basic pattern in the reflex regulation of the activity of the circulatory organs. In the 1890s, Pavlov was investigating the gastric function of dogs, and later children, by externalizing a salivary gland so he could collect, measure, and analyze the saliva and what response it had to food under different conditions. He noticed that the dogs tended to salivate before food was actually delivered to their mouths, and set out to investigate this “psychic secretion”, as he called it. With the help of his assistants, he was able to condition the dogs to salivate at the click of a metronome.

As Pavlov’s work progressed, Pavlov established the basis for conditioned reflexes and the field of classical conditioning. Pavlov concluded that he was able to pair a neutral stimulus with an excitatory one and have the neutral stimulus eventually elicit the response that was associated with the original, unlearned reflex. In Classical Conditioning terminology, an unconditioned stimulus (US) is an event that causes a response to occur, which is referred to as the unconditioned response (UR). And, in Pavlov’s study with dogs, the food within the dog’s mouth is the US, and the salivation

that results is the UR. Pavlov took a step further and added an element known as the nonexcitatory, conditioned stimulus (CS), which is paired with the US. Pavlov used a metronome as the CS which he rang first, then fed the dogs. This pairing would eventually establish the dog’s conditioned response of salivating to the sound of the metronome. After repeating this procedure several times, Pavlov was able to remove the US (food) and by only ringing the bell the dogs would salivate (CR). Since the bell alone now produced the unconditioned response (salivation), the association had been established (Conditioned). Pavlov continued to present the CS with any pairing with the US until the CR no longer occurred. This elimination of the CR is known as extinction. However, waiting a few days and then reintroducing ticking metronome resulted in the dogs once again salivating to the CS. Pavlov termed this, spontaneous recovery. Pavlov continued his studying of the conditioned response. He replaced the metronome with other stimuli for use as the CS. He conditioned the dogs using a buzzer, the flash of a light, a touch on the dog’s harness, and the use of different pitches of a whistle in which the dogs had to differentiate between to determine which pitch resulted in access to food. Pavlov’s experimental research gained much respect throughout Russia as well as America and the rest of the nations. Although he began his investigations late in life he managed to develop the major constructs of a fully realized field of learning. He summarized his discoveries in his book, Conditioned Reflexes.

Pavlov’s work also laid the foundation for many of psychologist John B. Watson’s ideas. In searching for laws underlying learning, Waston (1913) urged his colleagues to

discard reference to inner thoughts, feelings, and motives. The science of psychology should instead study how organisms respond to stimuli in their environment, said Watson. “Its theoretical goal is the prediction and control of behavior. Introspection forms no essential part of its methods”, or in simpler terms, psychology should be an objective science based on observable behavior. This view, which influenced North American psychology during the first half of the twentieth century, Watson called behaviorism. Watson and Pavlov both shared a disdain for “mentalistic” concepts such as consciousness and a belief that the basic laws of learning were the same for all animals – whether dogs or humans.

Pavlov was also elected a corresponding member of the Russian Academy of Sciences in 1901 and in 1904 Pavlov received a Nobel Prize in Physiology and Medicine for his works on the physiology of the digestive glands. He was elected Academician of the Russian Academy of Sciences in 1907, and was given an honorary doctorate at Cambridge University in 1912, and awarded the Order of the Legion of Honour in 1915, the recommendation of the Medical Academy of Paris. Dr. Ivan Pavlov died in Leningrad on February 27, 1936. In addition to the many honors he received during his career, Pavlov should also be credited for the extraordinary impact his work, and that of his students and followers has had in the field of physiology.

What you should know about drugs.

According to the latest European School Project on Alcohol and Other Drugs, the Czech Republic ranks quite high among European countries in drug use. In 2007, 45% of respondents under the age of 16 reported having tried cannabis, followed by sedatives 9% and magic mushrooms 7 %. Is the Czech Republic as drug- friendly as the numbers seem to suggest?

More than a small amount

Under Czech law people can be prosecuted for possession of drugs according to the amount they have. In the past the law was not specific, with phrase like “more than a small amount”. Since January 2010, however, the exact amounts of illegal substances have been defined. The clearer definition helps to distinguish between different degrees of crime, misdemeanor and felony. Possession of a small amount is classified as a misdemeanor, with a penalty of up to 15,000 CZK (900 USD). People who posses more are charged with a felony and can be sentenced to time in prison.

The logic behind the law

The idea behind the Czech drug laws is to treat drug problems as a health issue rather than a criminal one. Lawmakers believe that if someone only has enough drugs for themselves, they need to get medical help, not go to jail. People who have large amounts of a drug probably want to sell it and they should be charged with a crime.

What the Czech Republic plans to do now is to put some money into drug rehabilitation and prevention programs. Currently, the country spends less than 25 CZK per person (1,5 USD) on drug treatment and counseling while the Netherlands spends 467 CZK (28 USD)per person on these types of programs.

Hard vs. soft drugs

Generally, drugs are divided into “hard” and “soft” drugs. Hard drugs include substances such as heroin, cocaine, ecstasy, crack and LSD that cause serious addiction problems. Soft drugs are marijuana and mushrooms. If some drugs are soft why are they illegal at all?

Marijuana is often believed to be a gateway drug. A gateway is something that moves you to something else. This argument, however, is disputed by experts. Dr. Martina- Richterová, the director of Sananim, a non- governmental organization providing prevention and drug treatment, explains the spread of this drug in the Czech Republic. ” Marijuana is actually no more popular here than in other countries. Because of the country´s history, this drug is not taboo, people are not afraid to speak about consuming THC (tetra-hydro-cannabinol).

“Drugs are a waste of time. They destroy your memory and your self-respect and everything that goes along with your self-esteem.”

The various effects of Marijuana on the user.

Many people justify the action of smoking the Marijuana plant (Cannabis) with the fact that it doesn’t mess you up nearly as bad as alcohol or that it isn’t bad altogether. Additionally many people argue that smoking cigarettes (tobacco) is worse for ones health, as it is the leading cause of lung cancer and contains a highly addictive substance, whereas Marijuana is not labeled as physically addictive. However, just because it is not physically addicting, anyone can become mentally addicted to anything, whether it be video games, smoking, drinking, facebook, the Internet, etc…

So, what are the true effects of Marijuana?

Everything seems to be moving slower.

One can focus, however, only truly can focus on one aspect or one activity at a time.

Slight hallucinations, although not nearly as bad as other drugs such as LSD (acid).

Marijuana effects cannabinoid receptors in the brain and influence pleasure, memory, thinking, concentrating, sensory and time perception, and coordinated movement.

Marijuana intoxication can cause distorted perceptions, impaired coordination, difficulty with thinking and problem solving, and problems with learning and memory

In often users (abusers) Marijuana’s effects sustain for days or even weeks that affect the brain, memory and learning, primarily.

In daily users, when they attempt to quit smoking, some experience signs of withdrawals which proves that it can be addictive, although not as addictive as harder drugs such as, crack, cocaine, heroine, etc..

Dependant of how long the smoker holds his/her breath, Marijuana smoke can affect the lungs greatly due to the carcinogenic content of the Cannabis plant.

I hope this answered some of the common misconceptions along with informing those who did not know. If you have any questions feel free to leave a comment! Thanks for reading!

Article about author, Dave McGowan's fascinating book, Inside the L.C., The Strange but Mostly True Story of Laurel Canyon and The Birth of The Hippie Generation.

I’ve spent my fair share of time in and around the canyons of Southern California. They are beautiful, magical, extremely creepy, and very haunted. All kinds of things go on there. Especially, Laurel Canyon. Musicians record great songs there, people meet up and form legendary bands there, people do a lot of drugs there, and sometimes, more often than they’d like to talk about, people are murdered there. Sometimes quietly, sometimes not. Based on my time there in the late 1980’s, off and on in the early 90’s, early 2000’s I can say all the things author, Dave McGowan writes about are absolutely true. He’s the foremost author on the subject. he’s written an amazing book about it, Inside The LC, The Strange but Mostly True Story of Laurel Canyon and the Birth of the Hippie Generation. Here’s the link for you to check it out http://www.davesweb.cnchost.com/It’s a must read for anyone interested in the subjects of rock n’ roll, mind control, 1960’s, the hippie movement, government control.

Most of the American public who were active in the hippie movement, the peace movement, and anything that has to do with mind expansion and treating each other in a loving and peaceful way believed in our musical heroes like Jim Morrison, Crosby, Stills, Nash, and Young, Frank Zappa, Mama’s and The Papa’s, all the great old bands. However, the things you find out about these people and their families will blow your mind. It would be a coincidence if a couple of them had families tied to the military intelligence community of this country, but THEY ALL DO IN A MAJOR WAY! It will knock your socks off and make you question everything you thought these legends of music believed in and proclaimed to stand for. At first, it’s such a brain twister, but upon reflection it opens your eyes to the realities of power and wealth in America.

The book Dave’s written is both enlightening and entertaining. If you’re of a curious mind it will lead you to seek out the truth about power, the music industry, American wealth. It’s no surprise that much of what’s learned on Dave’s website will also lead you to finding out more about secret societies such as the Illuminati, Freemasons, and so on. From the old time haunted Hollywood of the Golden Age of film, to the Hippie movement of the 1960’s and 70’s, to today, Inside The L.C. exposes so many activities that are off limits to the light of day and the eye of the general public. It’s a fascinating read and a fascinating part of our world. Taking the lid off the cookie jar that is Los Angeles is a huge undertaking and Dave McGowan has done a masterful job of rising to the challenge. Once you start to learn about these things and connect the dots it will truly change not only your view of music and California, the movie industry, the government, it will change your world view as you soon begin to understand that EVERYTHING no matter how large or small is connected.

The following is a list of people connected to the activities involved in this whole subculture. James Dean, Jackson Browne, The Monkees, Jimi Hendrix, Herb Cohen, Micheal DesBarres, Joni Mitchell, Eric Clapton, Dennis Wilson, the Doheny Family, the Eagles, the list goes on and on. I leave it to the reader to decide how far and deep they wish to learn about this topic. The videos below are an excellent radio interview of Dave McGowan where you hear him elaborate on all these activities. Great writer, great book!

An exclusive essay on a remote possibility.

This may sound strange (I don’t see it written about often) but I have always wondered if people in the future would use hallucinogens in warfare. The reason I wonder about this is sort of because I have heard it put forward as a possibility. What more efficient way to wage a war w/out firing a shot than to make the opponent incapable of differentiating reality from chemical induced fantasy?

I say people need to @ least be aware of and prepared for this possibility, even if you might think it currently far fetched. Reason being, that hallucinating people would be picked off quicker than people whose minds are clear.

I hope hallucinogenic warfare is never actualized, but given man’s capacity for making bizarre and destructive concoctions, I’d say it is not as crazy as it may @ 1st sound. I would love my readers thoughts on this topic. I have heard of people who have taken hallucinogens and suffered side effects years later.

A famous early rapper saw television as an influence holding back change, keeping people at home instead of out on the streets where they could campaign for a cause. He said the revolution would not be on television. That theory has been blown apart.

A famous early rapper saw television as an influence holding back change, keeping people at home. He saw them as self indulgent and lazy – when they should have been out on the streets. The rapper was Gil Scott-Heron and his single The Revolution will not be televised was a breakthrough for rap. It was a call saying if you want change in your life – you have to make your voice heard.

2011 has seen his rap become redundant as protesters throughout much of the Arab world have taken to the streets. The movements in Tunisia, Egypt and Libya have been inspired by TV, Twitter – and the Internet. Protesters came out to join the crowds they saw on TV – and the revolutions began.

News and information spread at the rocket speed of new technology. Old regimes were sleeping, unprepared for the improvised but efficient organisation of the rioters.

Scott-Heron’s rap was issued in 1970 but his lyrics make fascinating listening today as he references the culture of the 70’s to make his points. The pro LSD campaigner Timothy Leary is quoted, the message is, you will not be able to turn on, tune in and drop out – because the revolution will not be televised.

President Nixon, Vietnam War leader General Adams, Steve McQueen and Natalie Woods will not be seen – the revolution will not be televised. Neither will the Beverly Hillbillies and Jackie Onassis. The toothpaste that gives your mouth sex appeal will not be televised. You will not be 5lbs thinner, things will not go better with Coke. No one will have to worry about the Dove in your bedroom, the tiger in your tank and the giant in in your toilet.

Gil Scott-Heron has been hailed as the Godfather of rap. His lyrics slam the message home - the revolution will not be televised.

But he has been overtaken by technology. Revolutions are taking off and catching fire on television - right now.

An experiment of LSD.

These nine drawings were done by an artist under the influence of LSD as part of a study by the U.S. government in the 50’s. The artist was given LSD and access to a team of painting. The model was the doctor who monitored throughout the procedure.

1:The first drawing was made 20 minutes after the first dose (50 micrograms). A doctor is the model. The patient chose to draw with charcoal. The subject reported that his condition was normal, even without the effect of the drug.

2: 85 minutes after the first dose and 20 minutes after the second dose (two of 50 micrograms). The patient is euphoric, “I can clearly see so clearly …. This is all … you … so … I have some trouble controlling the pen. It seems he wants to continue drawing. “

3: 2 hours and 30 minutes after the first dose. The patient seems very focused on the task of drawing. “The exterior lines are normal, but very vivid. Everything is changing color. My hand must follow the thick contour lines. I feel as if my conscience would be located on the part of my body that is active. My hand, my shoulder … my tongue. “

4: 2 hours and 32 minutes after the first dose. The patient seems trapped by his pad of paper. “I will try to do another drawing. The contours of the model are normal, but those in my drawing no. The outline of my hand also gets weird. It’s a very good picture, Isn’t it? I give up.’ll try again …”

5: 2 hours and 35 minutes after the first dose. The patient quickly becomes another drawing. “I will in one stroke … straight … a line, without interruption!” After completing the drawing the patient starts laughing, then stay perplexed by something he sees on the ground.

6: 2 hours and 45 minutes after the first dose. The patient tries to climb on the stand, and shown generally agitated. Slow to respond to the suggestion that should draw some more. He speaks very little, “I am … everything is … changed … they call … your face … intricate … who is …” Hum a tune almost inaudibly. he start using poster colour

7: 4 hours and 25 minutes after the first dose. The patient picks up on the couch and stays 2 hours lying, waving his hands in the air. His return to activity is sudden and deliberate, changing media to pen and watercolor. “This will be the best drawing, like the first, only better. If I’m not careful I’ll lose control of my movements, but will not happen, because I know. I know” (the latter said many times). The patient performs the last six lines of the drawing while running back and forth across the room.

8: 5 hours and 45 minutes after the first dose. The patient continues to move around the room, intersecting the space in complex variations. Spend an hour and a half before it is put to redraw. Apparently, the effects are diluted. “I can feel my knees again. I think the effect is running. This is a very good picture. The pen is extremely hard to sustain” (is holding a crayon).

9: 8 hours after the first dose. The patient sits on the sofa bed. Reported that intoxication has passed, except for the occasional distortion of our faces. We ask that you make a final drawing, which performs with little enthusiasm. “I have nothing to say about this last drawing. It is bad and uninteresting. I want to go home now. “
