Most of the rituals and talismans that people cling to for luck seem completely irrational; but they give the bearer or wearer a sense that they’re managing their luck.

Athletes (not to mention sailors and fishermen who depend heavily on the weather) are often superstitious. Home-run king Hank Aaron wore the same shower shoes for twenty years because he thought they brought him luck, and basketball great Michael Jordan felt more confident with his University of North Carolina shorts under his Chicago Bulls uniform.

Here are the common charms people rely on to bring good luck:

Image via Wikipedia

Four-leaf clovers

The Druids in medieval Europe believed that the four-leaf clovers imparted to those who found them special powers to see invisible witches and evil spirits. A mutation of the normal three-leaf variety, its value as a charm stemmed in part from its rarity.

Rabbits’ feet

Rabbits and hares have long been revered as mystical. Because they live underground, rabbits were believed by the Celts to be in secret communication with the netherworld. It is however, the great bunny-making capabilities of rabbits that give them their strongest association with luck and prosperity.

Wishbones

The Etruscans believed that the hen and the cock were soothsayers—the hen because she foretold the laying of the egg with a squawk, and the cock because his crow heralded each dawn. When a fowl was killed, the collarbone was dried in the sun and people made wishes by simply touching the bone. The practice of breaking the wishbone, with good luck going to the one who gets the larger half, may have developed as a function of supply and demand: too few wishbones and too many people.

Knocking on wood

This custom seems to have grown from a belief that the noise may prevent evil spirits from hearing you mention your good luck. That kind of boast would be dangerous because it could incite anger and a reversal of fortunes. Today, it has the more practical purpose of acknowledging your luck, making you seem more humble.

Horseshoes

Horses have long been worshipped as magical animals, and the horseshoes’ crescent shape resembles the new moon, an ancient symbol for procreative powers of women. A horseshoe nailed over the door symbolizes the forces of life prevailing over the forces of death.

Sometimes you have to psych yourself up when you have a difficult task to complete. You can achieve almost anything with the right frame of mind. So set your mind to it and heed these few tips to get you started.

When there is something you really want to achieve and you doubt yourself, that’s the time to get your mind psyched up to accomplish the task.

Image via Wikipedia

1. Make a list of your strengths, your good qualities and everything you like about yourself and apply it to the situation at hand.

2. Set clear and realistic goals. If the task is too large, see if you can break in down in smaller goals, and approach them one by one.

Image via Wikipedia

3. Write down your goals and follow your checklist. This will keep you on track and let you feel a sense of accomplishment.

4. Reward yourself for completing a difficult task. Rewards will increase your motivation to accomplish your goals.

5. Before you tackle a difficult task imagine yourself doing it. Sit in a quiet place and, close your eyes, breathe deeply and see yourself completing the task.

6. Don’t be afraid to ask for help if you need it.

Image via Wikipedia

7.Dress comfortably, according to what you are doing. Carry your lucky charm if you want to.

8. Don’t let yourself procrastinate and beware of things that would sidetrack you.

9. Get a good nights sleep, be well rested, and have a healthy meal.

10. Now you are ready to go. Walk tall and keep your confidence intact. You can do it if you think you can.

This is inspired by my mother.

My mom is an avid believer of lucky charms (and bad lucks as well). In her garden you’ll see lots of money and luck-related plants. She would immediately discard a plant or anything that she learns that brings bad luck. Anywhere else inside and outside her residence you’ll also see different lucky charms. A person who believes in lucky charms is also one who is a very superstitious kind of a person because this is what I have seen in my mother and others who believe in lucky charms.

Lucky charms recommended by Feng Shui weaken negative energy and strengthen positive energy. For this to happen, they should be installed in the right place.

Bagua Mirror

This lucky charm should be installed outside the house, particularly on top of the main door where it returns the poison arrow from the opposite house hat could be hitting your main door. A poison arrow could be the sharp edge of roof of your neighbor or bended iron grills of a gate pointing your house. These provide negative energy at your home and should go back where they came from by installing a Bagua mirror.

Money Frog

A frog with a coin on its mouth or money frog should be facing opposite the main door and facing the living room which means prosperity is entering or getting inside your home. It is known as Chan Chu in Chinese which means “toad” or “frog”, especially the “Lucky Money Toad” or “Three-legged Money Frog”. It is also believed to drive away evil, protect wealth, and increase income.

Color

Use white, silver, gold curtains in your study area for luck. The same goes with your work area. These colors are considered lucky for these areas.

Aquarium

Your aquarium should be positioned in the north and southeast. Keep the water clean to attract money luck. If you’re going to place it in the north, it doesn’t just attracts money luck but attracts luck in career as well.

Water Fountain

Like an aquarium, a water fountain should be place in the north or in the southeast also. This lucky charm also brings money and career luck.

Bats

A bat figurine should be place in the living room because it is believed that it brings a healthy and lucky life.

It should be noted also that thrash cans/rubbish bins should be place in the toilet or in hidden areas. They should not be displayed because it absorbs positive energy that supposedly circulating inside the house.
