Society’s Worst Social Sins

What are society’s worst seven social sins? According to Mahatma Gandhi they are, commerce without morality, wealth without work, education without character, politics without principle, pleasure without conscience, science without humanity, and worship without sacrifice. These sins seem especially relevant to our situation today.

The biggest social sin it seems is that we have become a “want it all right now” nation. We can’t wait until we earn the money to afford a MacMansion. We must have it now, even if we can’t afford the payment. The fat cats are glad to collect interest on the loan then take the house when you can’t pay. We say we want it now because we are worth it. But doesn’t that sound silly to you? It doesn’t matter if we think we are worth it. Unless we can make the payment.

We have been sold a bill of goods by creditors, psychiatrists, big banks, and I’m afraid by parents. I wonder if parents today really know the value of money, the value of remaining debt free, or realize the lessons they are passing on to their children. Having no idea of the value of the worth of money is another social sin.

Writer Gay Talese says he was taught by his father to “take nothing for granted, to be frugal, and above all self sufficient.” He thinks the recession might end all the foolish big spending and bring an end to all the nonsense. Let’s all hope he is right. In the Great Depression Roosevelt put the brakes on profiteers, threw out the money changers, and thieves. Just as we need to put the brakes on big banks and the profiteers of today.

Today if we look around us we see the consequence of these social sins everywhere. Someone has to begin to think with a clear head and with a frugal mind set. If that had been done earlier in the game we wouldn’t have ended up in the place we are in today. We need to get back to respect, decency, caution, fairness, and hard work. All the reliable lessons we were taught by our forefathers.

Dreams are Everything

My dreams are everything to me. My hopes keep my heart, my spirit and my mind alive. Everyday the picture of my dreams becomes clearer, more perfect in my mind. Everyday, I am one step closer to realizing everything I have ever imagined for myself.

Everyday, I also learn how very important it is to listen, and listen carefully to people who have what you want, are doing things you want to do, and are fulfilling their dreams. They hold the secret, the keys to how to unlock the doors that seem to stand in your way. They are living, breathing proof that success is possible, that dreams are reachable. They knew how to reach their goals and they have paved the way so that you can too!

I am still learning. We all are. Continual learning is an intrinsic part of life. This is a wonder. This is the magical mystery of life! No matter how much we know today, there is always something more to learn tomorrow, to further enrich our lives.

I will always believe every moment is precious, every word; every thought spoken, all incomparably, precious. Believing this allows me to see life very differently. It makes me know in my heart that if I truly love something, I must give everything in my heart, to never take anything for granted; when I do this my joy and happiness multiples infinitely, infinitely. When I give for no other reason than to bring joy to another person’s life this gift comes back to me a hundred times over.
