The purpose of this study was to find out where in the world these differences exist (only countries with a population of over 500,000 were taken into account).

The male to female ratios vary quite significantly throughout the world. Despite the fact that men outnumber women, there are a large number of countries in which the females outnumber the male population, particularly in Europe. One of the most interesting findings of the study was that the only European country to have more males than females amongst its populace is Turkey.

It is also interesting to note that out of the top ten countries in which women outnumber men, eight of these are former Soviet Republics.

In Middle Eastern countries there is a distinct pattern of men outnumbering women. Eight out of the top ten countries in which males outnumber females are located in the Middle East. The reason for this is said to be due to the massive influx of foreign males from South Asia who come to work in these Middle Eastern countries. The extreme case of this is found in the United Arab Emirates where men now outnumber women by a massive 2.14 to 1.
