Amazingly curious and yet it is true.

A form five student in SMK Nasiruddin Shah, Alor Lintang Kelantan is able to speak Mandarin and Korean fluently after a road accident. She acquired her ability four days after the accident where the motorcycle which she and her brother ride was hit by a lorry on their way home. She was riding with her brother when a lorry hit them from behind and causing her to thud off from the motorcycle and knocked her head on the road. She was lucky, she had her helmet on.

The accident had caused her to fall into a coma for 11 hours. Doctors did a couple of scan and found a blood clot behind her head but miraclously it dissapear in the second scan. They did a third one and confirmed there was no longer any clotting.

Noraini confused with her new skill

On the fourth day around 5PM after discharge, she woke up from sleep and suddenly started to speak in Korean. She asked her mother for water but she couldn’t understand her. At first they thought she was speaking Chinese until a relative who likes to watch Korean movie told them that she is speaking Korean. Sometimes she would switch to Mandarin. Surprisingly, once she has started to speak in these foreign languages, she is unable to speak Malay.

Her ability was tested by her relatives when they asked her to translate a Korean movie; and she did. She was able to translate exactecaly like the provided subtitle. A Chinese doctor who did a follow-up treatment considered her condition curious in his 17 years of service as a doctor in Kelantan, Malaysia. Strangely she can no longer speaks Malay in her Kelantan dialect but instead she uses standard Malay language. This worries her parents and they are trying to seek help to cure their daughter.

The Chinese language has been through many changes in its long history.

Chinese can more accurately described as a family of languages rather than as a single language in one distinct sense. By far the most widely spoken Chinese dialect is Standard Chinese, which used to be known as Mandarin, not just in China itself but across the World. About five-sixths of a billion people speak Standard Chinese as their first language in China. Other Chinese dialects include Wu, Xiang and Yue. Although the differences between patterns of speech may only vary slightly and in many cases be mutually intelligible, experts consider them to be separate languages in their own right.

There is a great amount of variety in both the semantics and in many incidences the vocabulary of these different types of Chinese. They are all tonal languages, however. Tonal languages are ones that have different meanings for words that would otherwise have an identical sound and meaning. Standard Chinese has four standard tones, for example. Standard spoken Chinese is often known as Putonghua, and it is derived from the dialect which was originally spoken in the region around Peking (Beijing). It is China’s official language, is one of the official languages of the United Nations and is among Singapore’s four official languages.

It is believed among most Sinologists (experts in the study of the Chinese language) that many of the languages native to the Far East are descendants of a common language which they call Proto Sino-Tibetan. Despite a large amount of investigation into this hypothesis, it is difficult to determine the sounds of the words that would have been spoken, and any comparison with Modern Chinese is purely speculative.

There have been many attempts, notably from Europeans, into a systematic method of categorising the Chinese language. Among the earliest of such attempts was made by Bernhard Karlgren about a century ago, and the process seems to be an ongoing and neverending task.

The Chinese language that was in use in the earlier periods of the Zhou Dynasty is referred to as Archaic Chinese. The Zhou Dynasty ended in the Third Century BC. Pieces of work which have been produced during such times include history and poetry of Shijing and Shujing. Many of the characters written in this style of Chinese contain radicals which give the reader clues as to how the character is spoken and the deeper, and often abstract, meaning it has. Other languages which have borrowed characters from Chinese, most notably Korean and Japanese, offers hints towards their original pronunciations in some incidences.

The Chinese which was spoken and written during the Middle Ages became to be known as Middle Chinese. It is the variety of Chinese that was in use during the Song and the Tang Dynasties. Clues regarding how different Chinese words were pronounced at that time come from many different sources, such as foreign word translations and various dictionaries that were compiled by contemporaries.

The Chinese language has followed a rather complicated path from its earliest foundations as inscriptions of oracles in bones and shells to the modern day. The complex geography of China has played a profound role in the development of its language. The plains across Central China allowed the more dominant and widely used Mandarin to spread, whereas the more mountainous areas of the country affords a more diverse range of influences in both ideas and phrases to its inhabitants.

There have been many attempts in the past three hundred years or so to make the more spoken Mandarin, and especially that regional variant spoken in Peking, the standard across the country. This had little success until the latter half of the Twentieth Century, however, when local people still continued to use their local language. In many parts of the country today, people can understand both the standard dialect and their local one.

It was the state education system in China which ensured Mandarin’s dominance over the other regional dialects. With the exception of Hong Kong, all school children from a young age must study in Standard Chinese. This step made Standard Chinese intelligible to just about everyone on the Chinese mainland. Mandarin is having more and more of an influence on day to day life in Hong Kong in spite of the status Cantonese has there.

Well, Mandarin is number one, spoken by the most number of people and French stands at number ten. Just have a look, who stands where.

Languages

Language is one of the most effective ways to express our selves, although there are many other ways like sign languages, body gestures and symbols. However, this sound reaches to every one so easily and most naturally, therefore the best media of expression, hearing, watching and understanding whatever we are watching.

There are thousands of languages in this world and many more dialects; however, these are ten most spoken languages:

1- Mandarin- This is one of the main languages spoken in the most populated country of the world, China. About one billion people speak it and this is one of the toughest to learn to speak this language.

The ability to communicate clearly is vital in today’s globalized world. Native Chinese professionals and students are discovering the benefit of this fun new language series, specifically designed to help overcome common language challenges with American English pronunciation.

Speaking American English can be a daunting task for any native Mandarin speaker, but as the business world becomes increasingly more globalized, the potential economic and personal benefits of such an audacious undertaking make it a worthwhile endeavor. Unfortunately, an adequate command of English grammar and vocabulary is often insufficient without a convincing American accent to back it up.

This presents a challenge for Chinese students of English, as the many complicated stress patterns and quick, fluid rhythms of American English can be quite difficult for native Mandarin speakers to master. That is precisely why Sovereign Language Press’s latest series, 7 Weeks to a Better American Accent for Native Mandarin Speakers – volume 1, is such a precious asset for frustrated native Mandarin speakers struggling to master the rhythm and flow of American English. The new volume is written by Tracey Ingram, M.A., M.S., a licensed speech and hearing professional, as well as the current Director of the Institute of Accent Modification.

Building off years of experience as a speech and hearing professional and working alongside multicultural clients, Tracey Ingram has developed a keen understanding of some of the most common struggles and handicaps that native Chinese speakers face when attempting to acquire an American accent. As such, 7 weeks to a Better American accent for Native Mandarin speakers – volume 1 is packed with exercises carefully crafted by one who possesses an intimate understanding of the inherent difficulties in transitioning from speaking Mandarin to speaking English like an American.

The program has 2 components which complement each other. The 70 page workbook and 16 audio tracks are to be completed in a seven week time span. Through successful completion of the seven week program, students should start building a strong foundation of skills designed to open up job opportunities, improve business relationships, and strengthen personal interactions.

Of course, the workbook may perhaps best be utilized in conjunction with daily conversational practice, which is why purchasers may also wish to consider enrolling for one-on-one instruction at the Institute of Accent Modification. For more information about 7 weeks to a Better American Accent for Native Mandarin speaker series, may be found at http://www.chinesespeakbetterenglish.com

A language can be so beautiful.

A language can be so beautiful. From the sounds of it, you can decide if you would like to just let it ’sing’ or you can consider to master it. So after a while I decided to pick up Cantonese. It is not really a language, it is more of a dialect that is widely spoken by people mainly from Guangzhou. Hence, in Hong Kong, most if not all of them speaks Cantonese.

I picked up the language after a long contemplation. I learnt it after about five years of long exposure to the sounds of this beautiful language.

I spoke to Eva about Cantonese, and I was surprised to hear that she also likes it. She is Hungarian but she is a special Hungarian who knows quite a lot of Chinese words. So Eva knows quite a lot of basic Chinese.

Considering learning Hungarian, I would think it is more difficult than learning Chinese. Well, that’s just my take. Many people considers the Chinese characters a pain to master. But I beg to differ, the Hungarian grammar is really not so easy to grasp. However, the sounds of Hungarian can be rather beautiful to the ears. I like that it has this pleasant sound sounding ‘~ash’.

Imagine a language like Cantonese which has nine different tones including those nasal ones that is unfound in even Chinese. I took about one year to learn it over Skype with a native Hong Kong language exchange partner.
