Beowulf vs. Maximus: A Comparison and Contrast

by Danny Hirtler in Folklore, December 25, 2010

I compare and contrast Beowulf to Maximus Decimus Meridius from the epic motion picture Gladiator. The biggest similarity between the two occurs when Maximus tells his troops in a pre battle speech “What we do in life echoes in eternity”. This is the basic motivation for Beowulf’s and Maximus’ aggression and war waging. They both seek to achieve a form of immortality by being remembered as heroes. As Maximus’ story progresses he becomes driven by something entirely different; vengeance. Maximus’ primary motivation for staying alive and succeeding in his battles is not mere self preservation; it is a desire to avenge the wrongful death of his wife, son, and true emperor, Marcus Aurelius. Beowulf’s motivation never really changes and throughout the whole story he is driven by a desire for immortality.
