In this article, I will discuss three theories of state and power sources and state functions in a modern nation state. These theories are Pluralism,Elite theories and Marxist theories of state. I will highlight the essence of these theories and their relevance in explaining how state operate in the modern liberal nation state.

The ideal of communism was very attractive to many revolutionaries in the twentieth century, who were seeking to overthrow the old and repressive monarchies. They wanted a new government that would suit their needs and abolish poverty from society. In Russia, the revolutionaries and the masses saw that the problem was a top elite class that hoarded all the land and wealth. However Russia also serves to epitomize the failure of communism. Russia had tried the communist idea, but it failed miserably with the breaking up of the Soviet Union. It is worthwhile to examine why such a seemingly utopian government failed.
