A brief description of animal magnetism and its inventor, Franz Mesmer.

Everyone is familiar with the term animal magnetism. Modern usage of the phrase uses it to desribe basic charisma or a high degree of sexual attractiveness. The term actually originated with a physician and theorist from Vienna named Franz Mesmer. His definition of animal magnetism was that it was a magnetic fluid of ethereal nature that existed in all living things. During Mesmer’s time the scientific community was talking about mineral, cosmic, and planetary magnetism, so to differentiate the types of theory about magnetism, he chose the word animal.

Later, people who practiced methods of healing associated with Mesmer’s theory began to call the practice mesmerism, though Franz Mesmer never used the term himself, preferring to refer to it as animal magnetism. Initially the practice of mesmerism, or animal magnetism was achieved by the laying on of hands in order to manipulate the
body’s magnetic energy. Patients describe feelings of intense heat, trances and convulsion during this process. Mesmer himself claimed that the convulsions were necessary to reach what he called crisis, which was when the healing power of animal magnetism encountered a block in the body, fought against the block, and won.

In the year 1784, King Louis XVI’s royal commission was appointed to investigate Franz Mesmer’s claims about the magnetic fluid but could find no evidence to support that such a thing existed. They did admit that the practices associated with the idea may have healing benefit, but it was attributed to the imaginations of the patients
who were treated in this matter, or that it was merely the power of suggestion at work.

By the year 1780, Franz Mesmer had too many patients to treat individually and began making use of an invention called the baquet. The baquet is described as a vessel about a foot high, likely a barrel or a sort of lidded jar, with holes peirced in the top. Iron bars of varying lengths protrude from the vessel. These are meant for the patient to hold onto in order to apply the force. The patients are also joined together by a rope, which is attached to the baquet, from the baquet to the first patient, and from that patient to the next until it completes the circle.

Later, a practitioner of mesmerism introduced hypnosis to the practice, which further implied that no force other than suggestion was at work. This is the beginning of modern hypnosis.

There are several referents to Franz Mesmer and the practice of animal magnetism in modern pop culture. One notable film, titled “Mesmer” and starring Alan Rickman re-imagines the birth of mesmerism.

The closest thing to magic that's known in this generation.

Hypnosis is a trance which relies on either relaxation, elevated imagination, or extreme suggestibility. This state is very close to daydreaming, but although on most films it is compared to a sleeping state, it’s actually not very close to this, because to be hypnotized you need to be alert at all times. The subject also has to want to be hypnotized and also needs to think that he can be hypnotized.

Some of the effects of hypnosis are self improvement, health effects and motivation, helping your business situation, or even sometimes sports psychology. Some everyday types of hypnosis are reading a book, driving a car, watching a movie, and mowing a lawn. If you are hypnotized, you focus on one thing and tune out all the worries, doubts, etc. that keep you alert. The first hypnotist (The Father of Hypnotism) was Franz Mesmer, an Australian. Before it was known as hypnotism it was called mesmerism, because of Franz Mesmer.
