Just when we though governments could not get any crazier, politically correct Denmark announces a tax on tasty food. The saturated fat tax is being hailed by health experts as a step forward in the battle againt obesity. But were is the justice in punishing those who like a steak or a bacon sandwich but maintain a normal weight.

So Denmark has become the first European nation since the death in 1975 of General Franco, the Spanish dictator, to embrace social fascism. “Fascist, politically correct Denmark? Have you taken leave of your senses Ian?” you might well ask.

No I haven’t. While we British were celebrating or mourning the outcome of the England – Scotland match in the Rugby world cup or were looking forward to the Wales – Ireland clash in the quarter final, or even simply pottering about enjoying a weekend off and maybe planning to spend some of our hard earned on a little of what we fancy (a very good Rioja in my case) the weekend news carried a very sinister little story that the Politically Correct Thought Police were hoping they could slip past us vigilant bloggers under the radar. The story reported that Denmark had become the first European nation to impose an unhealthy food tax.

Putting aside all the libertarian stuff about us choosing our own poison etc. they main thing that should concern us is the food to be taxed is not unhealthy at all. It is saturated fat, the kind of fat found in butter, beef, bacon, lots of healthy, spicy, delicious dishes from north Africa, the middle east and India that contain lamb, and for many of us the most essential of all foods, cheese. Saturated fat is the food that drove evolution. Without saturated fat and fingers humans might have spent their entire history standing in fields chewing the cud and wearing expressions of bovine complacency.

Thanks to our ability to use tools and the way our digestive system developed enabling us to metabolize saturated fat we were able to devote a lot of our time to mapping the movements of the stars, building henges and pyramids, inventing wheeled vehicles, explosives, weapons of mass destruction, computers and breast implants. So many things that make life better.

Saturated fat is what put us at the top of the food chain, not just in the form of saturated fat we eat but also the saturated fat that along with water makes up most of our brain.

And now they want to put a tax on it. This is effectively a tax on evolution. Ha! Those pointyhead science fanatics who always start raving about evolution the moment religion in schools is mentioned hadn’t thought that one through had they. Neither had Christian fundamentalists but they will because I know a couple read this blog to see what we are saying about them. The excuse for taxing tasty, nourishing, healthy food is the alleged obesity epidemic. But it is not saturated fat that causes obesity, it is too much saturated fat. So how can it be anything other than fascism to tax those of us who watch our waistlines. Why should we be punished for being good and eating our five a day but enjoying the steak or chop or curry or sausages that help the five portions of boring, tasteless stuff go down?

What has anything that happens in Denmark to do with us.? Well there are moves to introduce a similar fat tax here. Just on natural, saturated fats (animal fats) that our bodies are adapted to deal with, not on the really dangerous stuff, the hydrogenated vegetable oils and transfats of “healthy” low fat spreads. Did you know soft margarine is the closes the food processing industry can get to manufacturing arterial plaque (the stuff that bungs up your blood vessels) Last week a bunch of unelected health finger-waggers were having the mother of expense account jollies to prepare their campaign for fat tax. And you, me, old Uncle Tom Cobbleigh and all, paid for it.

The <strike>Global Gathering of Health Zealots </strike>UN Summit on non communicable diseasesconvened in New York to discuss ‘Non Communicable Diseases’ (NCDs). (WTF are non communicable diseases? Mostly they are things you enjoy doing that politically correct do gooders hate you doing – like enjoying yourself.)

NCDs are what those of us who benefited from the renaissance education used to refer to by the scientific term ’shit happens (or mostly doesn’t) when coupled with a life which isn’t dictated by an almost fanatical devotion to telling other folk what they can and can’t do. The New York delegates are committed to making absolutely sure that shit will never happen for other people, whether they wish to take the risk or not.

Let’s elaborate. We all know people who stick to their indulgences right through life. My Aunt Amelia whose efforts helped win World War 2 (she was a tonic for the troops) smoked heavily from starting work at fifteen. She was on up to forty a day at her peak but cut down towards the end of her life. When she died at 80 the kind of people involved in UN Summit on non communicable diseases would have applauded her doctor who said “She could have had a few more years if she had not smoked.” A few more years of what? Millie had always enjoyed life to the full but was starting to feel her age. Her death was not attributable to smoking although I’m not saying the ciggies helped. But she had a great eighty years and in the end ran out of dancing partners. Was it better to shuffle off this mortal coil suddenly, without prolonged illness or intense pain that to linger in a slow decline? Is getting old and dying a non communicable disease.

Who has not known the old guy, grandad or great uncle of a friend maybe, who shuns vegetables and anything boiled, drinks five or six pints a day and lives beyond the average age and then one day does not feel on top form and three days later is dead. Is his rapid shift from robust god health to rigormortis a non communicable disease? If it is, we are all suffering from it. It is called life. The Politically Correct Thought Police recruited by the United Nations insist non communicable diseases are “preventable”.

Such individual cases are not a representative sample but they do serve to show people are all different as does the case of the forty year old fitness fanatic who suddenly drops dead or worse develops cancer and falls into a long decline.

UN Summit on non communicable diseases plan to prevent you from suffering a debilitating or even fatal attack of life by ensuring you will never be allowed to indulge in any activities they deem to be risks. Which tend to be any activities that might put you at risk of enjoying yourself. ‘Preventing’ means making you change your life, against your will, to fit in with how government and bureaucracy say you should live. Making it their business to go around sticking their noses into yours, basically.

To get a clear idea of what we are up against take a look at an interview with a This is the face of the campaign to stamp out non communicable diseases.

I don’t know about you dear reader but to me she looks like a woman whose wedding tackle has healed over due to excessive self righteousness. high profile delegate, and anti-smoking pioneer, Dr Judith Mackay Click here to play a recording of the interview Please do spare a few minutes to listen (pour0 yourself a drink, light a ciggy, do something non communicable), because in the first half of a 20 minute piece with a simpering stooge, she fully endorses everything ever written by libertarian bloggers about the pernicious invasion of our liberties on the back of the tobacco control template.

Dr. Makayused to think the tobacco industry was “uniquely awful”, but now wants to declare war on “the alcohol industry, fast food industry, sugar, salt industries. “The arguments that they are using are very similar, the advertising they are using is very similar” she smugly pontificates. Why that is so can be easily explained. By her own admission, the techniques employed against all those industries are increasingly becoming very similar (The Jihad against Junk food).

“With tobacco, we are now legislating so that you don’t see packets of tobacco as you come out of the supermarket, in other words they are going to have to be sold below the counter, or they are going to have to be sold in plain packaging. So I think, you know, we need to shift all the other industries in the same direction.” The scorn aimed at bloggers and online article commenters who suggest that savoury snacks, fizzy drinks and burgers might have to be hidden in the future now that the precedent has been set, is withering Yet here we see and hear such actions being advocated with brazen pride.

Limo Therapy - a type of Cleansing the body of Toxins, restoring the Metabolism and Therapy in a wide range of Diseases of Various Organs. Naturally, the Medical Starvation is not a trivial Denial of Food.

Limo therapy – a type of cleansing the body of toxins, restoring the metabolism and therapy in a wide range of diseases of various organs. Naturally, the medical starvation is not a trivial denial of food. This is a scientifically proven technique that promotes the mobilization of all restorative processes of the body, freeing the body from the ballast of the old tissue, decaying and diseased cells.

I must say that limo therapy has different features and capabilities at different periods of use. Unloading for three days cleanses the blood, body fluids; gives relax and regenerate the digestive system. However, this period is not enough to cleanse the body of accumulated dirt. Fasting for 10 days only on the seventh day after the rest of the main systems, the human body receives the alarm of a power failure and starts a hastily released, primarily from unnecessary, ill. Major in limo therapy issues are:-

1. The correct input in the fasting.

2. Compliance with the rules fasting.

3. Correct output

Log in fasting is accompanied by purging, enemas, laxatives drugs. After cleaning is necessary, however, periodically during fasting to repeat the cleaning procedure for the withdrawal of the selected body tissues and bred in the bowels of slag.

When the three-day fasting is necessary to try to spend as little as possible energy, so as not to take the body off balance and not to provoke a breach of metabolism caused by an abnormal situation as hunger. Do not try independently, without supervision of a physician to starve more than 3 days.

Exit the strike begins with the consumption of fruit. After a while you can move on to salads and vegetable broth. In the second one can eat as usual, but in small quantities. Pay attention while working your gut. On the fourth – the fifth day, you can enter the diet of bread and a sixth day to eat as fed to the hunger strike. With one caveat. Not in any way not to overeat. Such stress the body will hurt.

In any case limo therapy – if it is carried out with the mind is nothing but good body will not bring. One can argue about the effect, but turn a blind eye to the facts is impossible. Literate hunger cleanses and rejuvenates the body.

It has been said that teens' behavior is like Chicago weather. If you don't like it, wait around a few minutes - it'll change. From moods to spurts of energy, adolescence can be marked by tremendous "swings." These can be most confusing to both teens and parents wondering if there is something wrong. Usually the diagnosis is a "case of the normal," but what causes this phenomenon, and how can we help?

Some have suggested that the culprit is nutrition. That is, a combination of “junk food,” too much sugar, and fad diets, creates a chemical imbalance which influences behavior. I’m sure that’s a contributing factor, but the two greatest causes are “growth” and “perspective.”

Teenagers’ metabolism is very high, and they are growing physically at a tremendous rate. (That’s why they always seem to be hungry.) I remember weighing 140 pounds at the beginning of high school, and then 170 pounds just nine months later. The glandular clocks are releasing hormones and ordering all sorts of changes. Besides the obvious effects of growth and maturation (hunger, sluggishness, awkwardness), there are subtle, unconscious ones relating to the “self-concept.” Consider the girl who worries about being too tall or perhaps overweight, the high school junior who still looks like he’s in grade school, or the coed engaged in the war against acne. We shouldn’t be too surprised to find these teens brooding about themselves and their social situations.

Perspective means “a way of seeing” and, in this situation, refers to teens’ perception of life. Problems which seem insignificant to us may loom enormous and insurmountable to them. A poor grade, a broken relationship, “not being asked out,” and athletic failure are pictured as matters of life and death. “I thought the world would end when I lost my girlfriend.”

As parents, our most effective response will involve patience and communication. Resisting our inclination to assume the worst and realizing that the “roller coaster” emotions are normal, we can “ride it out” and later “talk it out.” We should let our teens know what’s happening in their bodies, assuring them that changes are to be expected and that we understand that maturation can be painful physically and socially (but we survived and they will too). Affirm them as very special and beautiful persons.

Another positive reaction is to see a mood change as a “clue.” Without forcing the issue, we can express our observations like, “You seem down today” – perhaps they will open up, and we can help. Maybe something happened at school involving homework/tests, friendships, or boyfriend/girlfriend relationships. (We can even check with their teachers if necessary.) Once again, communication is vital. Lovingly and without condescension, we can share our “adult” perspective and solution.

Whatever our specific response, we must remember that the language of feelings (emotions) and the language of logic are different. Without violating their right to their feelings by arguing and debating, we must listen, accept, and guide.

A crowning jewel on thirteen years experience.

I am a unique personality in the fitness world. Some thirteen years now, and a mind to go with it. I would describe myself as believing in the generation of Bill Pearl, and that type of physique. You know, Arnold. Throughout the years I have gained proverbs both within and without the fitness world. Although, look at what happens when I combine the two. Just do what you do and stick with it, there are a thousand ways to do any one thing correctly… the only quest is to see it done. The way it was done.

Today, I will be talking about the mind. Perhaps, because it is the most advanced concept I have attained and actually live. Further, I have never seen it written about and I am in the process of beginning my book… about health. I have a frame which is dispostioned geneticly towards slow metabolic rate, if I eat fat will arrive. So what did I do? I countered the metabolic nature using the nature I create with my mind. Ceaselessly, I contract and flex while no one notices… I do things twice and three times… et cetera and more.

The truth is… the body only burns so many calories daily. Therefore, the mind may choose to burn more calories daily. The most common choices are: to go to the gym; to go on a walk or jog; to have sex and stay up late. Although, that is what is working for everybody… isn’t it? So, why are people unhappy with themself today… still reading an article about increasing the metabolic rate. Because very many people do not attempt to gain a ceaseless, constant revelation within themself; regarding the things which may be done better. The holding of a cup, using gesture. Going up the stairs, using choreography. Sitting in a chair, using posture.

The mind is perhaps the most overlooked aspect of health, personal training, nutrition, and the sculpting of the body. In thirteen years, I have never read one article about the ability of the mind to choose calorie burning. I have never read an article about little things done greatly, therefore greater things existing. People most commonly become frustrated, if they forget their keys in the car. Although, why? You are able to do the same thing greater; to walk not only to the car, but to the house and then to the car.

My Ladies, remember… the mind, the wisdom, the beauty in life which I have obtained is… entirely through focusing on you. Your mind, your body, your spirit. Men, remember… I was not talking to you. But, if you saw something in my word, awesome. I know that I am an adrenaline addicted feminist, and every man is his own man. Never call me a man, I’m a feminist.

If you are looking to become a happier, nicer you, then you’ll be surprised to see just how easy that can be. Follow these five tips and you can be well on your way to a happy and healthier new you.

We all want to be happy. Happiness gives off the appearance that nothing can bother us and nothing is wrong in our lives. The fact is there is not one person on this plant that does not have issues to deal with that makes them unhappy. What separates some from others is the fact some know how to really bring out their happiness while others do not. Here are some tips that you can implement and start becoming a happier person.

Decide

The first thing you need to do is decide to be a happy person. In other words you have to learn to not let the little things affect you in life. This morning I was behind someone in traffic who decided they were going to make a right turn. They took forever doing it. The old me would have been angry, but the new me just smiled it away as being a small part of my day that meant nothing.

Be Grateful

Are you grateful to others for everything you have? Some people believe they are where they are in life because of only themselves. However that is not true. You are where you are because of work from others too. Your mom, dad, grandparents, friends, there are a list of people that helped you throughout your journey called life that lead you to where you are today and there are more to come. From this point forward make sure you are grateful to others.

Laugh

I love the TV show Friends. I thought it was one of the funniest shows on TV. So funny that I went out purchased the 10 DVD set of every season. I make it a point to watch an episode or two throughout the week to give me a good laugh. Laughter truly is the best medicine and to be a happy person you need to laugh. So find what brings that laughter out of you and go for it.

Work

Work you might say. Yes work. The reason is not so much the work but the achievement and results of that work. Whether it is your job or a project around the house, you want to make sure you work hard at it and complete it. I love to work with wood. I love building things. The joy I get out of finishing a woodworking project gives me a great sense of accomplishment and brings happiness to my life.

Exercise/Eat Right

Many, many and I mean many studies have shown that a good exercise program combined with a quality nutrition program can lead to happiness. You will have more energy, you will look better and feel better. Visit with your doctor and work with him or her to set you up on your exercise plan today. You could also join a local gym and meet with a personal trainer. Whatever they recommend for you to get healthy, you should do it.

Thomas Jefferson coined the phrase, “the pursuit of happiness”. Take his advice and that is you should always be pursuing happiness. These five tips will give you a good start on your way to a happier new you.

Would you like to make some extra money writing about your happiness experience? You can join Bukisa today and start earning residual income on every article that you write about happiness.

When you're dieting, it's easy to get caught up in the jargon and still fail in the pursuit of health. Diet pill manufacturers tout every "weight loss" solution under the sun, but we still remain fat, or get even fatter. What's the difference between "weight" and "fat" when you're dieting and what kind of effects do they have?

For lack of a better word to adequately describe the action, I’ve been on my diet for 46 days and have lost a total of 16.5 pounds and 3% body fat. I don’t like to use the term “diet” anymore because I think most people understand diets make people fat instead of thin.

Diets are by nature, a temporary change in behavior; if they were anything more, so many people wouldn’t name weight loss as the top New Years resolution. The fact we as a nation keep finding our collective waistbands expanding instead of shrinking should validate dieting makes a person fat.

Stop and think about every diet you’ve ever been on as well as the ones you’ve created. You cut your calories so low, you make parakeets look in their cage mirrors and ask, “Does my butt look big in these feathers?” You experience palpitations and nausea as you pop the latest and greatest “NEW!” diet pill that will give you the resistance and discipline of a Tibetan monk, but all you can think about is that dirty four letter word: F-O-O-D. You crave cake, ice cream, burgers, French fries, and everything else under the sun – and your pet begins to look tasty. Lastly, your mood swings could get you a guest shot in any horror flick as your spouse screams, “Who are you and what have you done with my mate?!”

If you really, truly, HONESTLY want to change your body image, you need to admit to yourself, “I am fat. I did this by myself, and only I can get myself healthy.” I will admit to walking around with a mental image of a skinny woman with perfect abdominal muscles and a drum tight booty. Sometimes, it’s much easier to pretend than it does to actually come to terms with the reality because when you do, you are faced with taking action.

Next thing you need to do is to put aside your concepts about weight – unlearn what you’ve been taught and start fresh. Weight is an overall measurement of the body; it contains bones, skin, organs, fluids (blood, water), waste products, muscles, and fat.

The more I watch TV these days, the angrier I become with the diet pill industry. Almost every single advertisement created makes the same claims: “lose weight now the fast and easy way!” My brow furrows in frustration as I see through the obvious flaw that’s so simple, I often why I never asked the question myself: “What KIND of weight will I lose?” If the American public demanded to know the answer, they would be surprised to learn the obvious answer: muscle tissue and fluids, and very little fat.

Unmasking the diet industry is the big challenge because people are still emotionally attached to the idea of a quick fix pill, but you’ve heard it said a million times before there are no magic bullets to solve an obesity issue. It’s time you admitted this to yourself!

Ok, many will stop and ask, “What’s the difference if I lose mostly fat, or mostly muscle and water weight? Ten pounds off is still ten pounds lighter!” Yes…and no – what registers on the scale isn’t necessarily a good thing.

A pound of water lost will register on the scale, but will it help you to fit into your clothes? Maybe for that day, but not much past that point as fluid retention is a sign of a different problem. Plus it always returns.

When you diet, you lose necessary fluids that help your body to perform cellular level tasks, which result in waste product production. If you dehydrate, you may hinder the vital processes as well as store wastes.

Diet plans often set up a strict low caloric eating plan, and in some cases, go below the critical energy production required to survive; your body needs energy to pump blood, to expand and contract your lungs, and to move. You go below these requirements and you will find not only your thinking slows down and daily tasks become muddled, but also you will encounter the starvation shakes and heart palpitations.

Low caloric diets cannibalize muscle tissue to meet protein needs. This means you’re losing lean muscle tissue and endangering other muscles – like your heart. NO muscle tissue is immune when your body’s hungry!

Low amounts of lean muscle means you will have an even greater challenge in losing those extra pounds. Muscle tissue his a higher energy demand to “feed” it, versus fat tissue. If you want to slim down, don’t trade away your best weapon!

Lose fat tissue and you’ll fit into your clothes much better and for a longer period of time. Most people understand one pound of weight is equal to 3,600 ingested calories. Fat cells never go away, but they can shrink. Water weight that’s lost returns as soon as you consume the slightest amount of sodium! It’s a lot easier to lose water weight, but water weight returns exceptionally fast and will disappoint you if you worship at the altar of the “almighty scale”.

You can be skinny on the scale and still carry a large percentage of body fat; it simply means you’re weak as a cat (because you have no muscle strength) and carrying a layer of fat. These are the people who can eat a pizza by themselves and then the largest ice cream sundae they can find and “never seem to gain an ounce”. Truth is they’re probably fatter than you are (percentage-wise), but notice their bodies – there’s no definition, no muscle tone, and rather plain. If you’re eating fat, you’re going to store it somewhere, and most likely at the expense of lean muscle tissue.

Carrying excess fat is a health risk for everyone – including “fat ‘skinny’ people”. Fat loves to settle around your liver, which is dangerous and further slows down your metabolism. Ever hear of an enlarged heart? What about heart bypass surgery? “Skinny” people carrying a high percentage of fat are just as vulnerable to chronic conditions as visually obese people are!

So you see, you can lose muscle and water weight and still not have the dream body you’re dreaming about with diet pills and fad diet trends. You will weigh less, but what will your body look like? How about a shar pei puppy – otherwise known as the dog covered in thick wrinkles of saggy skin. It’s cute on a dog, but hell in a bathing suit! Instead of fat rolls, you have empty saggy rolls.

When you lose “weight”, you have a new physical problem: the lose skin that flops around and sags. How many times do you hear this question asked of diet and fitness gurus? “I lost all this weight…how do I tighten up my skin?” Well, there are two ways of doing that: gain the fat back, or develop muscle tissue to fill it back in. You should understand at this point lean muscle tissue is your friend:

It burns more body fat as an energy source

It speeds up your metabolism

It fills out the empty spaces and gives you shape and definition

Some people are still going to be thinking about the easy way around the problem of how to develop lean muscle tissue. You see the advertisements again from the diet pill industry, and they guarantee if you take this “scientifically engineered” formulation, it will increase your body’s ability to enter into a thermogenic state (which is just a fancy word for turning your body’s thermostat up so it liquefies the fat so you can excrete it). Yes, the pills do work – but only a tiny bit! They will not increase your temperature enough to “burn” anything, except your wallet and your willpower when you don’t see results. The diet industry’s not there to assist you in getting skinny – they’re there to keep you fat and buying their products!

At this point, you should see there’s a big difference between weight and fat. You can afford to carry extra water and lean muscle, but not fat! No one ever died from being fit and well hydrated. So how do you lose the fat, keep the muscle, and manage to look like one of those diet commercials? Cardio and strength training exercises, in addition to proper diet – there’s no way around it that will give you lasting results. Focus on the cardio as your main point if you want to lose fat, but don’t neglect building muscle to have something to give you definition. You might have six pack abs, but until you lose the fat layer on top of it, you won’t ever see them.

Also give up on the fantasy you can “spot reduce” in problem areas – you can’t. Calories will be expended and fat will burn where it wants to. All you can do is continue using cardio workouts to burn the fat. If you continue working the muscles in your problem areas in addition to the cardio, your efforts will pay off.

I’ve got an assorted collection of exercise videos; some I like, most annoy me. Almost three years ago, I purchased the “Slim in 6” and the “Winsor Pilates” DVD series, and although I’ve started using the Slim in 6 program, I have recently gone back and looked at their diet plans. For some reason, I didn’t like the Winsor Pilates diet, although I couldn’t put my finger on it. Recently I saw the advertisement for “Slim in 6” and noticed the claim of being able to lose ten pounds in a week.

At this point I had been doing the Slim program for a few weeks – I was working out on the second of three workout schedules and thought, “How come I’m not losing weight at ten pounds like the ads claim?” So I went digging around in my large diet and fitness box and pulled out the diet plan to figure out what I was doing wrong. It turns out you must go on a liquid diet for a few days, then solid food, and during this time you work out twice a day. You’ll never see that mentioned in the ad or else people would say, “NO SOLID FOOD FOR HOW MANY DAYS?! Heck with that!”

Your body needs solid food – it burns more calories by having to work to break it down for digestion, whereas a liquid diet has nothing to break down. This means your body is not burning calories doing what it does best, and why not take advantage of every place you can burn a calorie or two?

I’m currently using a bit of a “home made diet”, but I’m using foundational basics from an e-book called “Burn The Fat, Feed The Muscle” by Tom Venuto. I don’t agree with everything he says or the contents of his recipes, but he’s right on with a lot of no-nonsense material every person should know. This isn’t your average diet book – I sniffed around it and read some reviews online before I said to myself, “Ok, let’s give this diet book a chance.” If you’re looking for a “how-to” with pictures and other fodder to fill space, this isn’t it – this is a long, hard read that can tie your optic nerve into knots, but I’m generally sold he’s got the answers no one likes to hear. You might want to visit his site and give it the sniff test for yourself, but I’ll keep you updated as to my own personal progress.

When I began to apply information from his book, I was stuck in the fastest plateau I’d ever run into. I was shifting between ten and twelve pounds lost, and now I’m almost twenty pounds down. The one thing you won’t do on this diet is eat like a bird – for women, you eat five times a day, and men eat six times a day! I admit I’m sick and tired of eating that much food, but you’d be amazed at how fast your metabolism starts to kick in. I eat every three hours, but I feel like I’m starving around two hours; I don’t eat small birdseed sized portions, I’m eating a couple of cups of veggies and chicken breasts or salmon filets. Hunger is a sign your body is starting to work efficiently, and best of all I have no cravings on this approach.

If you start experiencing cravings, it’s because your blood sugar’s too low and your body’s survival mechanism is kicking in and trying to “force” you to eat. Of course when we feel sluggish, we automatically grab for the sweet treat for the fastest sugar spike to return our energy back to normal. You can beat it first thing in the morning with a cup of oatmeal and a liberal dose of your best weapon: cinnamon. Turns out this wonderful and under-utilized spice has the ability to regulate blood sugar levels, which means your sugar won’t drop and you won’t crave. I use it a few times a day in assorted foods and all you need is ¼ teaspoon of it to work, so use it early and often and you’ll be able to drive past Krispy Kremes without biting the steering wheel.

This lecture is about photosynthesis. All of the world's energy (with the exception of nuclear energy came and comes from the sun. It is commonly said that we get all our energy from the Middle East in the form of petroleum. Even that energy came from the sun, billions of years ago. Photo-phos-phorylation is the ultimate process which supplied the world, all the energy. It is still supplying all the energy. No doubt about it.

In this lecture you will learn photophosphorylation, photosynthesis, Adenosine, adenosine monophosphate, adenosine diphosphate, adenosine triphospahte, chlorophyll, glucose, glycogen, metabolism, respiration, xanthophylls, stomata, carotenoids.

We get all our energy from the sun. However, we cannot sit in the sun and get all the glucose/glycogen which we need for our metabolic processes. So we are fortunate in that all the green plants you see with your eyes are working for you and me. Read on for more details.

Figure A. Diagrammatic representation of photosynthesis

All green plants contain a substance called chlorophyll. Plants containing chlorophyll in their leaves and elsewhere can photosynthesize in the presence of sunlight and the following equation will take place at a molecular level.

The overall equation is: 6H2O + 6CO2 ———-> C6H12O6+ 6O2

Equation 1 Photosynthetic equation – discussed in detail below.

Six molecules of water combine with six molecules of carbon dioxide to give one molecule of sugar (carbohydrate) and six molecules of oxygen.

This reaction, photosynthesis, takes place in the green part of the plant called the chloroplast. The chloroplast is located in the leaf. Please see a cross section of the leaf in a standard text book or you can review the diagram below which is obtained from www.emc.maricopa.edu/faculty .

The practical relevance of this understanding is that green plants obtain water through their roots and carbon dioxide through their stomata from the immediate environment. Water and carbon dioxide are converted into glucose and oxygen both. Glucose and oxygen keep all the animals on the surface of this earth alive.

In plants, water enters the plant through the root cap of the root. From here it is transported up to the leaves by specialized cells known as xylem. All land plants must guard against drying out and often have specialized stomatal structures for this purpose. Carbon dioxide cannot enter the plant through the waxy leaf. It must enter the leaf through the stomata. Similarly, oxygen produced during photosynthesis must leave the leaf through the stomata.

We all know that chlorophyll is green, when we talk about chlorophyll we generally mean chlorophyll a. There are other types of chlorophylls which are not green. These are called accessory pigments and include chlorophyll b, c, d, and e, xanthophylls and carotenoids such a beta-carotene. Accessory pigments (chlorophylls) absorb energy which is not absorbed by chlorophyll a.

Chlorophyll a absorbs its energy from the intermediate (Green Yellow-Orange) wavelengths.

Figure B. Cross section of a leaf.

In equation 1, above we saw that 6 molecules of water combined with 6 molecules of carbon dioxide to give one molecule of sugar (carbohydrate) and six molecules of oxygen. This reaction takes place in the chloroplast. The chloroplast is a highly specialized cell. The structure of the cell is as given below.

Each chloroplast has a double layered outer envelope. Inside each chloroplast there are numerous thylakoids, this is where starch (carbohydrate) is produced. Few starch granules are seen floating in the chloroplast below.

Adenosine Triphospahate (ATP).

ATP the energy currency or coin of the cell, transfers energy from chemical bonds to energy absorbing reactions within the cell. Structurally,

ATP consists of the adenosine nucleotides, ribose, sugar, adenine base, and phosphate group, PO4-2) plus two other phosphate groups.

Energy is stored in the covalent bond between phosphates, with the greatest amount of energy (approximately 7 kcal/mole) in the bond between the second and third phosphate groups. This covalent bond is known as a pyrophosphate bond.

The chemical reaction for the formation of ATP as:

Adenosine diphosphate (ADP) + inorganic Phosphate + energy produces Adenosine Triphosphate (ATP)

The chemical formula for release of ATP energy is:

Adenosine Triphosphate produces Adenosine diphosphate + energy + inorganic Phosphate.

TYPES OF PHOTOSYNTHESIS:

Three different types, these are C3, C4, and CAM.

C3 photosynthesis is the usual photosynthesis that occurs in most plants.

C4 and CAM photosynthesis are both adaptations to dry conditions because these result in more efficient better water usage.

CAM plants can “idle,” saving precious energy and water during harsh weather conditions, and C4 plants can photosynthesize faster under the desert’s high heat and light conditions than C3 plants. This occurs because CAM plants use an extra biochemical pathway and special anatomy to reduce photorespiration.

The biochemical structure is as given below. Please not the three phosphate valencies. Adenosine exists as adenosine monophosphate, diphosphate, and trihosphate. ATP has the most amount of energy and is most easily usable. The structures of AMP and ADP can be seen at Cellular Respiration (Metaboism) for Nurses here.

Diagramatic representation of the Chemical Structure of Adenosine monophosphate.

Photophosphorylation is the chemical reaction of making ATP using a Proton gradient which is created by the Energy gathered from sunlight. This process of creating the Proton gradient resembles that of the electron transport chain of respiration. Since the production of this proton gradient is light dependent, hence the process is called photophosphorylation.

Diagram D. Diagrametic representation of Photophosphorylation. From www.whfreeman.com THE BASIC REACTION WHICH GIVES ALL ENERGY TO EVERYTHING ON THE FACE OF THIS EARTH.

In photophosphorylation energy is trapped and stored in a form which is ultimately used by all plants and animals of this earth. The process of using up the energy occurs at cellular level and is called respiration.

Respiration: It is defined as the metabolic processes whereby living things obtain energy from organic molecules; processes that take place in the cells and tissues during which energy is released and carbon dioxide is produced and absorbed by the blood to be transported to the lungs.

Another definition of respiration is a single complete act of breathing in and out; often represented in terms of breaths per minute, “eighteen respirations per minute” for human beings. Respiration is covered in more detail in my other publication entitled, “Cellular Respiration (Metabolism) for Nurses” by Shergill here.
