It was originally reported that the cause of this phenomenon was due to a breaking down of the fluid’s surface tension. This is now not thought to be the cause (washing up liquid breaks down surface tension and does not produce a similar effect). It is now thought that the heavily pitted nature on the surface of the mint on a microscopic scale allows nucleation of carbon dioxide bubbles at such a fast rate that rapid effervescence results.

The world record for the largest number of Mentos eruptions set off at the same time is 1,911 and was set in Latvia in 2008.
