2010 was a banner year for gossip lovers, as celebrities seemed to try and outdo each other to see who could be the most outrageous.

It’s hard to go on-line, pick up a magazine, or turn on the TV these days, and not see or hear a story about yet another big name celebrity misbehaving. Ranging from the salacious to the sublime, the accounts of stars acting up have become common fodder for news sites and bloggers over the past decade. Not, mind you, that this is a new phenomenon, it’s just that with the Internet, and the proliferation of ‘citizen journalists,’ more and more of these unfortunate incidents are reaching a wider audience.

While a lot of the things celebrities got up to in 2010 are also done by everyday people, their antics got a lot more publicity, and excited much more emotion.

This year has seen a proliferation of celebrity misbehavior, with stars seeming to vie with each other to see who could be the most outrageous. Following are a few of the most notable incidents of celebrity meltdown in 2010, in no particular order, as reaction to the behavior depends largely on what particular form of behavior a person is bothered by.

“The Devil Made Me Do It”

Lindsay Lohan’s career has been troubled by problems with alcohol abuse since 2007, when she was first charged with DUI and ordered to rehab. Her latest run in with the law came in May 2010 when she failed to attend a rehab report hearing because she wanted to stay at the Cannes Film Festival. For that stunt, the troubled Lohan was sentenced to 90 days in jail and 90 days of rehabilitation. She served 14 days of her sentence, but then in September she failed her drug test. Needless to say, the judge was not amused.

Mad Max Goes Mad

Mad Max and Lethal Weapon star Mel Gibson lost a lot of his popularity after an anti-Semitic rant at a police officer in 2006, but people are forgiving, and there was a chance he might have made a comeback. That is, until his ex-girlfriend Oksana Grigorieva leaked recordings of him making racist and threatening remarks to her over the phone. In a contentious custody battle with Grigorieva over their child, Gibson apparently completely lost it, causing the LA District Attorney to open an investigation into possible domestic abuse. All one can say on this is, stay tuned.

Don’t Forget Your Underwear

Britney Spears has been in the news almost too much. Most of her antics have just been tacky. In 2010, though, she went over the top, so to speak. So many photos of her appearing in public bra-less appeared, that dad, Jamie Spears banned her from leaving home without a bra. Let’s just hope she remembers to put it on. Spears, who can’t handle her own business affairs, has a limit on her credit card, and according to one news report, when she wanted to buy an item that exceeded her limit, she took her bodyguard’s card and signed her name to it. She then browbeat the hapless clerk into accepting the card. Everyone is innocent until proven guilty, but does anyone here the words ‘credit card fraud’ in there somewhere?

Tiger, Tiger, Burning Bright

Golf phenomenon Tiger Woods made headlines in 2010 when an altercation between him and his ex-wife, Elin Nordegren came to the attention of the police. Subsequent investigation surfaced the fact that the golf superstar had been having a torrid series of affairs with a lot of women, leading to the breakup of his marriage, the loss of his kids, and a long hiatus in his golfing career. Things move on, though. Elin reportedly has a new boyfriend, and Tiger has started his comeback, even though he’s no longer at the top of golf’s rankings.

And The List Goes On

The list of things that celebrities did in their wild moments in 2010 goes on and on. From Miley Cyrus allowing herself to be filmed smoking a bong (albeit containing a legal substance), tarnishing her Hannah Montana good girl image, to Charlie Sheen of Two and a Half Men, going on a rampage in a hotel room with a porn star, depending upon your taste and tolerance for salacious gossip, there was something for everyone. Who can forget Kanye West grabbing the microphone at the Grammy Awards and dissing Taylor Swift (bad boy), or the British socialite Tara Palmer-Tomkinson appearing in public looking like she’d just done ten rounds with Mike Tyson, because her cocaine use has caused deterioration of the septum and her nose has collapsed – that’s right, collapsed.

If it’s true that the only way to go is up, 2011, when it comes to celebrity misbehavior, will be a year to look forward to.

"What Schools Need (Part 2)" is based on low self esteem. It is one in a series of articles on the missing elements in schools.

Why are children leaving schools with low self-esteem? Low self-esteem correlates directly with the lack of ability to read and write. When children cannot read and write, they present themselves as someone else, act out in classrooms, and carry this behavior with them into their adult lives. We must stop this cycle of ignorance.

No one wants others to call them a “dummy.” Many children receive these kinds of comments on a regular basis at school and sometimes at home. Name-calling can make a child want to become someone else. Some children may even want to be invisible. If you do not want to be yourself, then you do not respect yourself, and you will not feel good about yourself. Connect these patterns of behavior to what happens to children who tattoo, pierce, and join gains. Celebrating one’s worth through assemblies and cultural activities is important strategies to implement at schools.

From experience, most children who act out in classrooms do so because they do not understand or they need attention. Children do not want to appear ignorant, so they put on a show to attract attention away from their lack of ability. Some children resort to violent behavior. Once the violence starts, documentation takes place. A child that exhibits improper behavior needs attention. Someone needs to take time to find help for the child. Some ways that parents and schools can assist child with behavior problems are having a conference to make everyone aware, getting the right people involved, and finding out what is affecting the child. Finally, secure appropriate remedies and strategies to assist the child. Definitely, do not allow the problem to escalate.

For escalation will show itself in young adulthood or even beforehand. Children will mature into adults who then steal, cheat, and even kill. Our prisons are filled with individuals who spent more time acting out in school rather than learning. Other adults find themselves caught up in a society where they can read the fine print which may lead to them being ripped off. Many find themselves in relationships that are abusive. And still others don’t graduate from high school putting themselves in positions where they can’t secure a decent job.

Once again, it all stems back to the low self-esteem. They don’t feel good about themselves, they don’t feel good about others, and they don’t survive. So, schools find a way to assist the children who have reading and writing problems immediately. Don’t just pass them from one grade to another until they explode and build a documentation record.

Discipline entails one’s “controlled behavior” regardless of the surroundings. In other words discipline involves “adopting a balanced attitude in all circumstances”.

The worth of discipline for every human being is unquestionable and what to talk of the significance of discipline in a school, a place where tender minds are to receive academic and moral training for building their future along with their country’s.

It is a general observation these days that the discipline at a majority of our schools, where normally a child spends 10 to 12 years of his early life, does not reach an encouraging level- one of the fundamental reasons we see rowdy and sometimes aimless too, learners emerging from our high schools, colleges and even universities.

The end product: social chaos of every sort that we are witnessing today.

Causes of school lacking discipline are many and varied. The overall decline in social attitudes, scarcity of ethical training at schools, unsatisfactory coordination between teachers and the administration and perhaps to cap all these is the very slim support schools usually get from guardians/parents with whom children spend around 16 to 17 hours daily.

Some teacher’s eccentric demeanour has its own detriment in school. Electronic media and the tempting gadgets for children and teenagers available in the market these days also play a damaging role n some cases. Teachers and section heads extra strict management of affairs concerning discipline also leads the scenario to unexpected disorders. Even a slip of the tongue by a student or a teacher creates a big mess.

If changing the approach of the entire society is not possible, the other factors mentioned above can surely be controlled.

The three sources that contribute in upgrading a child’s discipline are parents, teachers and the environment minus school and guardians.

Now due to various complex social and economical issues a child presently living in a big city like Karachi or Lahore can not form a healthy association outside his home or school.

Discipline entails one’s “controlled behavior” regardless of the surroundings. In other words discipline involves “adopting a balanced attitude in all circumstances”.
