Sigmund Freud’s escape from Nazi occupied Vienna to London in 1938 has been the subject of at least two compelling works of non-fiction, David Cohen’s The Escape of Sigmund Freud, and Janine Burke’s The Gods of Freud. The story is remarkable in that the founder of an entire new social science, psychology, and the world’s most renowned psychoanalyst, was forced into exile from what was once the seat of intellectual vitality in the Western World. The story of his escape is almost unbelievable.
