Wells, one of the most important figures in the history of science fiction. In the 1960s, the city of Newcastle upon Tyne underwent a controversial and destructive redevelopment. Huge areas of the Georgian and Victorian city were demolished in favour of Modernist structures. The man behind it was Thomas Daniel Smith, known as T. Dan Smith, the leader of Newcastle City Council. At the time he was hailed as a visionary and was popularly known as ‘Mr Newcastle’.
