So many species have ruled earth, such as dinosaurs and mammoths, before and after the appearance of humans. When paleontologists dig out their bones, it is amazing that they can easily categorize these animals to carnivorous meat eaters and herbivorous plant eaters, though nobody has actually seen these creatures. Here is how the categorization is done.

The teeth of these animals reveal their food habits, whether they ate plants, animals, insects, fish, or sucked honey from flowers. Every animal has a predefined set of teeth which matches their diet. Without the right set of teeth the animal would not be able to eat its food and its basic survival becomes a huge question. If the animals lack teeth, as in case of ant eaters or birds, then their mouth shapes reveal their dietary patterns.

Carnivores:

The flesh eaters should kill their prey. So, they have large canines or pointed teeth to deliver the killing bite by cutting off the jugular vein in the throat. Canines are also required to tear flesh from the body.

Incisors have minimal value and so these are not well formed. The incisors or the teeth we have in the front are used to grip the prey’s flesh while the canines tear apart. It is also used in shearing the skin.

The predators with weak digestive system, such as cats and dogs, require chewing of flesh well before swallowing. This mastication requires strong molars which well pointed. The points of the upper jaw molars fit well into the points of the lower jaw molar and act like scissors while chewing.

In case of predators which have very strong digestive system such as sharks, the mouth is filled with canines which tear off flesh. In case of snakes, crocodiles and alligators which also have very strong digestive juices, the teeth are just used for gripping the prey not allowing it to escape. This is why the snakes have teeth which are curved towards their throat.

Herbivores:

The incisors are very important, as these are required to cut the plant materials which are stronger than flesh. Eating grass or leaves may seem simple, but it is not that simple. The plant materials are very well knit and have defense mechanisms against their marauders. Therefore, the animals have to cut the parts quickly before alarming the security systems which demand for strong and sharp incisors.

The canines are absent, as there is no requirement of tearing flesh. The tusks of elephant or hippopotamus and the protruding sword-like teeth of warthog or wild boar are not canines but modified incisors. These are used to remove barks from trees, dig soil to find roots and more importantly, act as defense mechanism.

The premolars and molars are well developed and have smooth surfaces which fit against the upper and lower jaws. They act like grinding stones for the plant materials.

The lower jaw has higher degree of lateral movement (from side to side) than the carnivores, as these have to munch on the plants very well from all directions to give their intestinal juices better chances of digesting them completely.

Insectivores:

Insectivores such as anteaters do not even have teeth. They have suction type of mouth with long sticky tongues.

The maximum that they do with their prey is to press the jaws against each other to crush the caught insects.

They have strong jaws and have discounted the teeth. Remember the last time you have seen a chameleon capture an insect and crush it in its jaws before swallowing it whole.

Picsivores:

The otters and fishing bat have dentition similar to a lion or tiger, just in miniature form, though they depend totally on fish and crabs.

The fish eaters such as gharials and alligator snapping turtles have strong jaws with pointed teeth (not present in turtles) which do not allow the fish to escape once caught.

Do you have what it takes to make a world record? You might want to think again after reading these extreme world records. It’s no wonder why the Guinness Book of World Records came to exist!

#1 – Got Milk?

Ashrita walked almost 81 miles over the course of more than 23 and a half hours, with milk balanced on his head! Actually, since Ashrita is a strict vegan, it was actually soy juice, not milk.

#2 – Driving Course from Hell

David Morgan from the United Kingdom has a lot of cones. Traffic cones! He has 137 different kinds of traffic cones.

#3 – It’s a Jungle Out There

In September 2005, 637 people dressed as Gorillas gathered in London to support the Dian Fossey Gorilla Fund.

#4 – When Pigs Jump?

The highest pig jump was recorded at 2 feet 3 ½ inches by Kotetsu the pig in Japan.

#5 – Two’s Company, Three’s a Crowd, and Eight is…?

The largest space crew in history is, get this, an entire eight people! Then again, good luck trying to break THAT record.

#6 – Holy Molars

The largest sets of dental caps are 50 centimeters in length! But they of course weren’t for a human. They were for Spike, the elephant! Each one weighed 28 pounds and the surgery to put them on took three and a half hours.

#7 – Unscramble the Scrabble

The highest number of simultaneous games of Scrabble ever played occurred at Northland Secondary School in Singapore. On March 14, 2006, 1,042 participants played in 521 games of Scrabble, all at the same time.

#8 – Gymnastic God

In April of 2003, young Aratak Grigoyan held a technically correct Azaryas cross position for 22.9 seconds. His record was recorded at the Yerevan State Physical Culture University in Amenia.

Conclusion

World records aren’t something you can just pick up and do when you’re bored. They take time and a lot of effort. While some may be impossible for the average person to break, like the giant dental caps, or the space crew, some like collectables can be done! So who’s not to say your name might be in a book some day?
