The cold dark machine gun barrel was pressed into her slender throat once again. Arrogant, powerful, and soulless, the Nazi questioned one of the four sisters;” Are you carrying papers? “. The sisters were an integral part of the Resistance. Only teenagers, their youthful innocence robbed by the war machine, they played an important role in the lives of Jews and stranded Americans.

The dark red brick home and local pub was situated at an important crossroads in Veltem, Belgium during the Second World War. While the sisters and their parents went about their daily lives, bombs were being sent overhead and into their village. Rumors floated amongst the lips of neighbors that there were resistance fighters right in their own backyards. Most were joyous at the thought, but there lurked others eager to turn in their neighbors for a favor from the occupying force. Word reached the sister’s home that the Nazis would be doing a search, looking for a particular pub described to them by a treacherous informant. The four sisters’ father happened to be a skilled carpenter. He worked throughout the day and into the next morning. The old pub didn’t exist anymore, in it’s place was another pub, but not as the one described. The Nazi search proved fruitless.

Time came for one of the sisters to be ‘questioned’. She spent her endless days without leave in a closet too small to sit in, too dark to see, and too far removed from her innocence. The Nazis learned nothing. The other sisters were more determined. The papers flowed.

Being too crucial to leave alone, the Nazis occupied the sister’s home, forcing the family into a few rooms. While searching for the resistance and occupying the crutch pin of that same resistance, Jews and Americans were ferried right under the stench full noses of the Nazi war machine. It was all too blatant to be recognized. The ruthless destruction of the sister’s home and country went on. Father died. Having been denied medical attention, he suffered and was buried without a headstone in the local church’s grassy backyard.

Liberation. So much damage on so many levels. Multiple continents united in a fight for freedom. Dad meets Mom. Mom’s violated home is now occupied by the determined Americans. Nazi papers are found. They had scheduled the sister’s family for elimination in ten days. Close. Now powerful American antiaircraft machine guns are placed in the basement of the sister’s home.

In the dead of night, piercing lights would be aimed at the drone of the engines from retuning Nazi fighter planes. The house would rattle under the fire of the machine guns. Sisters would shake. Cry. Pray. Night turned into day.

Four years later my parents were in a double wedding ceremony. Two of the sisters were saying vows that wouldn’t be broken. Decades later, my dear sister would perish from cancer, like her mom had just a few years earlier. In the bright family room of a large hospital, I met with my sister’s oncologist. We talked about family. Roots. His father had barely escaped from the Nazi regime. It was through the tireless efforts of a few sisters in a small Belgium village.

“It was the most ridiculous chain of events that happened,” she said while sobbing Monday. “It’s still hard to believe what happened.”

Leszczynski, 28, and her husband Marcin, 33, were handcuffed, searched then released on $50 bail each. Their ordeal at the police station lasted a few hours, but their daughter Zofia spent the night away from her parents in a case that has sparked nationwide outrage and forced the Safeway supermarket chain to review the incident.

The family had moved to an apartment near downtown Honolulu from California two weeks ago. Still settling in, they ventured out Wednesday to stock up on groceries, took the bus, got lost, and ended up at a Safeway supermarket.

Famished, the former Air Force staff sergeant picked up the two sandwiches that together cost $5. She openly munched on one while they shopped, saving the wrapper to be scanned at the register later.

But they forgot to pay for the sandwiches as they checked out with about $50 worth of groceries.

“When the security guard questioned us, I was really embarrassed, I was horrified,” she said. They were led upstairs, where the couple expected to get a lecture, pay for the sandwiches, and be allowed on their way.

But store managers wouldn’t allow them to pay for the sandwiches, she said.

“I asked to talk to a manager and he said it was against their policy to pay for items that left the store,” she said. “The security guard said we were being charged with shoplifting.”

Four hours later, a police officer arrived and read them their rights. A woman from the state Child Welfare Services arrived to take Zofia away.

The pregnant mother said she tried to keep her composure until Zofia, who turns 3 in December, left the store. “I didn’t want Zofia to be scared because she’s never spent a night away from us. She didn’t have her stuffed animal. She didn’t have her toothbrush.”

But as soon as her daughter left, “I got completely hysterical. I went to the bathroom and I threw up,” she recalled.

A Honolulu police spokeswoman said it was procedure to call Child Welfare Services if a child is present when both parents are arrested. The store’s management did not know the girl would be taken away, said Susan Houghton, a spokeswoman for California-based Safeway Inc.

The national supermarket chain said it was looking into the incident. “It was never our intent to separate a mother from her child. That was a very unfortunate consequence to this situation,” Houghton said. “We understand the outrage. We are concerned about how this was handled.”

Leszczynski called the incident “so horrifying, it seemed to escalate and no one could say, ‘this is too much.’”

The couple was handcuffed and driven separately to police headquarters a few blocks away, where they were searched, had their mug shots taken and then released after paying bail. A police officer escorted them back to the store — which banned them for a year, Leszczynski said — where they picked up their groceries and walked home just before midnight.

“We basically stared at each other all night. We woke up at the crack of dawn and called (the state child welfare office),” Leszczynski said. While they waited, Leszczynski vented about the experience on babycenter.com and contacted a lawyer for help with being reunited with Zofia. At the lawyer’s suggestion, they took their story to the media.

Zofia was returned after an 18-hour separation from her parents.

The couple is charged with fourth-degree theft, a petty misdemeanor, and has a court date on Nov. 28, according to the city prosecutor’s office. The family hasn’t decided whether it will pursue legal action against Safeway.

Houghton said the company will review the police report and store security footage before deciding whether to press charges.

If she doesn’t give you a reason the first time, maybe she will the second time.  If she keep’s saying just because, then she is keeping something from you.  The most common reasons would be the one’s above.  Don’t get in a fight with your mom just because of a silly shopping trip.  It may be important to you, but you will have many more opprotunities to go with friends. 

If she still doesn’t let you go, then ask if you could take them instead of your friends parents.  Your mom will definetely feel much more safier and happier to know that you aren’t embarrassed to go with your mom and she can still watch over you.

 A motion by her defense attorney Jose Baez, attempting establish the four convictions as violations of Casey Anthony’s Fifth Amendment protection against ‘double jeopardy,’ were dismissed by Judge Perry. The court sited four separate instances in which Anthony offered false information to investigators claiming she had spoken to her missing child, the child was kidnapped by her nanny, where the nanny lived and that Anthony was employed by Universal Studios, each statement proved to be false.

Casey Anthony had been incarcerated for nearly three years at the conclusion of her sentencing, leaving the balance of her sentence at less the thirty day and is set to be released on July 17th, 2011.  Anthony’s days in court may not yet be over, along with the court imposed monetary fines; she also faces a number of lawsuits.

The first lawsuit filed by a South Carolina inmate who claimed to be the father of Casey Anthony’s deceased child, has been dismissed as the man was incarcerated at the time the child would have been conceived.

An attorney for the woman, who was investigated as the “nanny” Zenaida Fernandez-Gonzalez, coincidentally named Zenaida Fernandez-Gonzalez has filed court papers in an attempt to depose Casey Anthony before her release in preparations of defamation suit against Anthony. While Zenaida Fernandez-Gonzalez may have suffered real damages it will be a tough case to prove that Anthony intended to inflict harm, as Anthony had sewn together a series of anonymous names together as she lied to investigators.

The non-profit Texas Equusearch has also filed a lawsuit against Casey Anthony, claiming $100,000 in damages related to the search it conducted at the request of Cindy Anthony, grandmother of the deceased child, during the search for the (then)missing child and fictitious nanny. Equusearch, a Texas firm had mobilized searchers and had expended such a massive effort that other cases of missing children had to be denied as the Orlando Florida case drained its reserves. And the list of lawsuits is not likely to end there.

The case had caught the national spotlight when it was discovered that Casey Anthony’s child had been missing for 31 days before it was reported to the police, and throughout the investigation Anthony remained stalwart, sticking to her story, but will any of these lawsuits stick to her?

As with the OJ Simpson case, an acquittal in criminal court is not necessarily the end. OJ, was found to be responsible for causing the ‘wrongful death’ of both victims and stripped of his wealth and possessions, Casey Anthony has neither to offer if found guilty in civil court. This is even more apparent as Anthony appeals the four misdemeanor conviction hours before her release from jail. Not paying the fines the court has handed down during sentencing will land her back behind bars, as could convictions in civil court.

The side effect of the Casey Anthony case has been new laws being drafted that make it a felony to not report the death or disappearance of a child, or person in the care of another within a timely manner. During the trial defense Attorney Jose Baez opened with the claim that the child accidentally drown in the family pool. The attorney claimed the grandfather, George Anthony, a former police detective, created a cover up by disposing the child’s body, actions that delayed the discovery of the child’s remains, making it impossible to determine the cause of death. George Anthony had under oath denied these claims.

If Casey Anthony is successful in overturning her four convictions of lying to investigators, it will surely dissolve all of the civil lawsuits against her.
