If films were actually still made of celluloid rather than digital processing, then the white female face would be illuminated in all its grainy glory. Now, the miracle of moviemaking allows High Definition (HD) images to dance across screens the world over. But don't worry. The faces are as pale as always. Thank God.

Charlize Theron at the Harvard Hasty Pudding Woman of the Year ceremony (Photo credit: Wikipedia)

Actress Charlize Theron must need an addition to her chalet in Aspen, Colorado. Relative naïf Kristen Stewart obviously needs more cinematic credibility for her inevitable career U-turn as a bonafide Academy Award contender. But what brings these two pink toe princesses together on the platinum screen in Snow White and the Huntsman is to further show why the beauty of the white woman must not expire out of existence.

English: Meryl Streep on the 56th International Film Festival in San Sebastian (Spain). Own work by uploader User:PhotoTakeReality (Photo credit: Wikipedia)

Face facts

Hollywood’s love affair with that milky, smooth female face is deeper and more expansive than its proOclivity to showcase blackface coon shows (devoid of the outrageous make-up and soft shoe routines, of course). The greatest nation in the history of the world dominates all other lands effortlessly because it comprises the largest concentration of Non-Hispanic Whites on the globe. Why else would the allegedly African-American Theron move to the States with a little darkie in tow? Is it simply a case of white maternal nonsense? Why else would the emotionally dead Stewart seek projects that would cast an ever blinding glow upon her supple Caucasian flesh? Is mediocre and somewhat cute, colored actress Gabrielle Union going to boast top billing in Snow White? No, you say? Just remember, still, that Oscar® winner Meryl Streep (a woman of Swiss-German breeding) played a Polish Catholic in Sophie’s Choice and nobody from the NAACP raised a finger to do anything about that obvious Anti-Polack role decision.

Conditioning complete

What’s most important is the full denigration of people of color on the giant idiot box at a theater near you. Little black girls still need to have just enough self-hate within in them to outperform her black male counterpart in nearly every category within the socio-economic structure of this beautiful country. It is the responsibility of Jewish writers, directors, producers, agents, and studio executives to illuminate movieplexes with the White woman’s face to elucidate to Field Negroes and House Negroes alike who feel that yellowbone and redbone females appear better in the light than the tar baby ladies who creep in moan in the bleak milieu of 21st century American life.

As far as the intensity of its spirit for preserving the white woman’s perfect visage, please may we let Hollywood burn.

FILM REVIEW THE RAID 2012

Spoiler alerts

If I had to nominate a film as the most action packed ever, this would be it but it is far from being a no brainer. Its simple story actually takes on depth and complexity as it progresses.

The plot is straightforward – a police SWAT squad raid on a Jakarta based crime lord’s tower block fortress goes horribly wrong. This is not a Bruce Willis Die Hard variant though.

Iko Uwain plays Rama, whose wife is heavily pregnant. He finds himself selected for a daring raid on a ruthless gangland boss who has turned a run down old tower block into his private empire. Seen as a place too dangerous for the police to approach after various previous raids failed, the block has become a safe haven for many hardened criminals and their gangs.

Lieutenant Wahyu, played by Pierre Gruno organizes a hush-hush no holds barred kill on sight raid by a hand picked team to finally bring down the ageing crime lord, Ray Sahetap’s Tama Riyadi.

After initial success in securing the lower floors, the raiders are soon discovered and the crime lord, on the top floor, masterminds a counter-attack, seeing the raiders on CCTV. He has snipers attack them from neighbouring properties and machete, knife and gun wielding hordes pour in on the police from above and below, sandwiching them in the middle floors.

As their numbers are decimated and the survivors find that the raid was unauthorized by the government or police, questions are asked of the leader of the team as to why he is acting of his own accord.

The film spotlights the Indonesian martial art known as Poencak Silat, and there are several stunning fight sequences choreographed and filmed in tight claustrophobic spaces. There is no wirework or trampolining leaping around. Only a mid-film stunt where the hero plunges through a window onto a fire escape platform looks contrived.

A breath-taking thoughtful high-octane drama that actually leaves you giving a damn about its heroes. The film is sub-titled Redemption.

FILM REVIEW IRON SKY 2012

FILM REVIEW IRON SKY 2012

FILM REVIEW IRON SKY 2012

Spoiler alerts

An under-rated comedy about Nazis on the moon – effectively, Allo-Allo in space with several nods to Dr. Strangeglove and contemporary political satire on US politics. The un-named president is undoubtedly Sarah Palin (played by Stephanie Paul.

To boost her re-election campaign, Palin sends male models to the Moon, where the poor wretches discover a Nazi moon-base in the shape of a swastika. One is killed right away, while the other, James Washington, played by Christopher Kirby, is kept alive and forcibly turned Aryan instead of being left black.

A Nazi scientist, a kind of demented Einstein figure, and my favourite character in the nonsense to follow, is impressed by modern cell-phone technology. To him, a computer should take up most of a room; He finds that the phone-chips can rapidly speed up his space-fleet development ready for the Fourth Reich’s invasion of Earth.

A team of Nazis is sent to Earth to steal more mobile phones though buying them might have been more discreet.

Washington finds himself taken along for the ride, and that a woman groomed as a new Eva Braun for the next Fuhrer, begins to fall in love with him. She tries to convince him that Hitler was right by showing him Charlie Chaplin’s Great Dictator. Unfortunately, it is the full-uncut version and not the ten-minute pro-Nazi re-edit she is familiar with. She is converted to anti-Nazi opinion.

As the new technology is taken to the moon, an invasion fleet is launched, with spaceships resembling giant metallic zeppelins.

Palin responds to the threat by launching a secret US space force – a Star Trek style Federation fleet. The Americans try to keep the show to themselves but the rest of the World has its own secret space fleets too, and everyone joins in. Only Finland has missed out on the space war fleet craze.

As the Nazis are wiped out, the Americans insist on securing rights to their secret technologies on the Moon, resulting in the other UN delegates turning on them with a punch up in the UN offices. As the credits role, nuclear bombs are seen exploding around the Earth.

Nukes are also used on the Nazi moon-base but seem to explode like conventional bombs.

The film works best in being shamelessly silly – when it tries to be clever and contemporary it falls rather flat.

The special effects, especially in the space dogfights are worthy of George Lucas.

UK distribution of the internationally produced film has been very odd. The film was given an initial single day UK release though some cinemas gave in to fan demands for at least a full week of viewings. The film was given a simultaneous UK cinema and DVD release. Definitely worth seeing in any medium though by no means perfect. It is thoughtful, brave and very entertaining.

Love as demonstrated in P.S. I Love You movie.

A charming and heart-warming kind of love story. Something you don’t always get to see in movies. I know I’m late. The movie was shown last 2007. My friend who is a Gerard Butler fan told me to watch it then, but I said I don’t want to watch movies with sad endings. I ate my words.

Well, the ending could not really be classified as “sad” or “tragic” despite the fact that the husband died. I’d even say it’s a movie full of hope. When Gerry (Gerard) died, he left his young wife Holly (Hilary Swank) letters to help her move on with her life.

It’s very rare for men to be keen on the details and go out of their ways to make a woman feel special by giving her the attention she deserves. Maybe that’s why I found the story engaging from the start. Every hopeless romantic will dig this movie.

When Gerry died, Holly was a mess. She closed her doors from the outside world for weeks. As a coping mechanism, she pretends Gerry was still around. She talks to him, wears his clothes, hears him sing. Until her 30th birthday when a birthday cake was delivered—from Gerry. There was a recorder taped at the cover and it was Gerry’s voice she heard when she played it. Gerry was telling her to get dressed and even ordered her best friend to make plans for the night who was present to surprise Holly. It’s like he was really there talking to her friends and reasoning to Holly. He told her to wait for the letters to arrive in the coming days. And the letters came. Giving her instructions; buy a dress, go out for a karaoke night, get rid of his clothes in the closet. He was so thoughtful that he even booked a trip for her and her girl friends to his hometown Ireland, where they both first met.

It’s amazing how Gerry predicted Holly’s reactions to what he’s suggesting her to do. She knows how crazy and hard headed his wife could be so he knows how to push her to do something which he knows she wouldn’t dare do.

He knows Holly will be lost without him. Even in the after life, he was there guiding her, keeping her steady, showing her what to do best with her life, reminding her how amazing and loved she is, being the shoulder Holly can always lean on.

She led her to places, people and events that helped her pick up the pieces and start over…until she finally got her life back. He finally let go of her hand after a year. When Holly finally felt his presence left her and said “He’s really gone”, her life was already back on track. Even her somewhat distant relationship with her mother and her issue with her dad was taken care of. It’s like Gerry made sure first that she’s alright before he finally rested.

Astonishing how love can cross boundaries and defy what we all consider normal and ordinary. I was so touched by a love so strong and true I was still crying even after the movie was over. Ha ha.

There’s this line Holly’s mother said after Holly’s last letter from Gerry, which I love.

So, all alone or not, you gotta walk ahead. The thing to remember is; if we’re alone, then we’re all together in that too.

I wish someone gave me that advice when I was a little crazy and melodramatic that I thought I was all alone in this big cruel world. Boo hoo. He he.

Seriously, sometimes we’re so caught up in our own misery we fail to see the people who are also going through, or went through a battle, who knows what and how we’re feeling, and knows better than we do.

I know it’s so easy to become a selfish, self-centered biatch when you’re going through something tough. It sometimes becomes an excuse to be insensitive with what others are feeling. But the show must go on. The sun will still rise tomorrow. You’ve got to move on. The world will not stop for you. But there are people who are willing to put theirs on hold just to be with you and help you keep up with the rest. It’s all up to you if you push them away or allow them into your life until you’ve gathered the strength you need to walk ahead.

P.S. I Love You is more than just a romantic movie for me. It’s a movie full of realizations, hope and lessons about moving on.

I cried 90% of the time. But it was a good cry. It’s been a while and I feel so relieved.

Thank you, Gerry and Holly! May you inspire more couples. Maybe life would be less complicated then.

What do they have in common?

16th May, MIB 3 star Will Smith was rather embarassed when young Jayden Smith brought up a very ‘out of the world’ subject during a recent private tour of the white house by the president himself. 13 year old Jayden who’s biggest curiosity was if aliens existed and the youngster didnt hesitate to pop the question during a tour of the ’situation room’. Will Smith tells BBC Radio host Chris Moyles during an interview, “The night before Jaden had said to me, ‘Dad, I gotta ask the president about the aliens,’ and I’m like, ‘Dude, no, it’s not cool. It’s embarrassing. Do not ask the president!’ So we get into the situation room and Jaden gets the look in his eyes and he leans over to me and asks, ‘Dad, What’s my punishment?’

“And Barack is starting to talk about this situation room and Jaden says, ‘Excuse me Mr. President?’ and I’m like, ‘Hey, Barack man, listen?’ and Barack said, ‘Don’t tell me.’ And in perfect form – and this is why he is the president – he stopped and looked at Jaden and said, ‘The aliens, right? OK, I can neither confirm nor deny the existence of extra-terrestrials but I can tell you if there had been a top secret meeting and if there would have been a discussion about it, it would have taken place in this room’

One has to admire the way President Obama handled the situation and perfectly shifted the kid’s curiosity to the ’situation room’ although it does suggest that the secret service has bugged the Smith’s residence. Either way, im sure the president was not offended by the question. Will Smith however, was red faced after that.

An essay describing an unexpected event or twist which is important in understanding the theme of the text.

“The Truman Show” by “Peter Weir” is about Truman Burbank whose entire life is a hugely popular 24-hour-a-day TV series. In the film, every moment of Truman’s existence is captured by hidden cameras and telecast to a giant global audience. His friends and family are actors who smile pleasantly at Truman’s familiar catchphrase greeting, “In case I don’t see you later, good afternoon, good evening, and good night!” Employed at an insurance company, Truman is married to Meryl, and they live in the cheerful community of Seahaven, an island “paradise” where the weather is always mild and no unpleasantness intrudes.

During an important scene in the movie Marlon talks to Truman about their strong friendship and the trust between them. Marlon, being coached by the TV producer through an earpiece, insists on his loyalty and honesty, claiming “you’re the closest thing I have to a brother” and deceitfully says, “The last thing I would ever do is lie to you.” This scene begins with cross cutting between close ups of Truman’s and Marlon’s face talking. It takes place at dusk and is badly lit with dimmed lights coming from the car behind them.

Marlon shows deep emotion which makes the audience feel empathy towards him while the camera focuses on his facial expressions. He is very controlling and manipulative in the way he leads Truman astray to believe that there is nothing going on. There is an emphasis on the intimacy between the two men, as there is a close up of Marlon holding a can of beer showing the significance of product placement in the film.

The relationship between mankind or father and son are really important, especially for the son to grow up as a young adult with values and morals. To emphasis this Christof uses every unique technique that he can imagine to make this scene as strong and emotional as possible.

When Truman is reunited with his dad it is a powerful, moving scene that is cleverly constructed to highlight the way Christof manipulates Truman. This reunited scene begins with a long shot to establish Truman and his dad seeing each other for the first time in years. It is followed by a medium-shot which allows them not to fill the frame, but to be seen hugging when they are finally brought together. An eye-level shot is used to show the mixed emotions running through them, especially Truman, as he was under the illusion his dad had died at sea, and was not aware that the scene was being scripted by Christof.

Lighting and music in the scene play important parts because they create the mood and atmosphere which is very mysterious and anticipated as well as giving a significant meaning. As Truman’s dad’s emerges from the distance, he is a dark shadow cast in the fog which signifies a mystery scene. His loud footsteps are exaggerated to build up the tension of finally revealing his identity. The music begins slow and chilling; it then becomes faster as the shadow of Truman’s dad is finally revealed. The music is then even quicker to represent the emotion that Truman is feeling, after finally being reunited with his dad. It becomes rhythmic as if it were Truman’s heart pumping loudly with shock and the anticipation he had been through in revealing who the dark shadow was.

The Truman Show is a film that interprets how people are heavily influenced by the media and how much power the media have over society.

How can a film about vampires and werewolves be so dull?

FILM REVIEW TWILIGHT NEW MOON 2009

Spoiler alerts

This may be one of the dullest vampire and werewolf movies ever made.

The success of the Twilight series is baffling. Its sparkly romantic vampires lack passion, and simply come across as soppy.

The films have made actor Robert Pattinson into a teenage heartthrob so a film in which he is largely absent may be something of a mistake. His noble no biting necks before marriage stance leads him to abandon lover and heroine Bella (Kristen Stewart) and leave town.

Bella gets morose and depressed, and seeks consolation in danger, cavorting with a biker gang and cliff jumping, but she is being watched by an old friend of Edward’s, Jacob Black, one of a band of werewolves who see it as their duty to protect humans from vampires and decide Bella needs their security measures.

The giant wolf effects are well handled but the wolves taking Buffy type kung fu kicks from vampires look silly. Another ludicrous touch is Edward’s Obi Wan Kenobi like warnings to Bella to avoid various dangers, right before she ignores him and endangers herself anyway.

Suspecting wrongly that Bella is dead, Edward seeks his own death at the hands of vampire elders, forcing Bella to race to his rescue.

This could have been a tense drama and has potential for lots of action, but it’s a very talky story where characters impress enemies with declarations of love and friendship. Pattison’s wooden acting makes him genuinely look like an animated corpse but these vampires spend so much time walking round in daylight it feels decidedly unlike a vampire movie throughout.

Bones, a darkly amusing procedural currently in its seventh season, is inspired by real-life forensic anthropologist and novelist Kathy Reichs. Dr. Temperance Brennan (Emily Deschanel) is a highly skilled forensic anthropologist who works at the Jeffersonian Institute in Washington, D.C., and writes novels on the side. When the standard methods of identifying a body are useless (when the remains are so badly decomposed, burned or destroyed), law enforcement calls on Brennan for her uncanny ability to read clues left behind in the victim’s bones. While most people can’t handle Brennan’s intelligence, her drive for the truth or the way she flings herself headlong into every investigation, Special Agent Seeley Booth (David Boreanaz) of the FBI’s Homicide Investigations Unit is an exception. A former Army sniper, Booth mistrusts science and scientists – the “squints”, as he calls them – who pore over the physical evidence of a crime. But even he cannot deny that the combination of his people-smarts and Brennan’s scientific acumen makes them a formidable duo.

There has been a lot of talk surrounding Pirates of the Caribbean 5. With each of the previous installments doing exceedingly well, expectations are high. Will Captain Jack Sparrow and his team be able to better their previous performances? Gear up for yet another blockbuster in the making.

By now its stale news that Johnny Depp’s portrayal of Captain Jack Sparrow has been loved by the masses. The amicable humor, delightful swagger and theatrical expression of Captain Jack Sparrow in Pirates of Caribbean offerings have cast a spell on adventure/fantasy movie buffs. Considering the madness, mayhem, and cookies and milk scriptwriting it’s least surprising why every installment of the Pirate series has been lapped up by audiences. Every movie buff is quick to point out why an installment of Pirates of the Caribbean is his or her favorite. Make no mistake; every series has had its fair share of praise and criticism. Is there a secret formula to ensure a movie a box office hit?

Regardless of what movie analysts have to say, the truth is a blockbuster needs to have a heady mix of ingredients that strike a chord with various audiences. Joint efforts of every team working on a venture contribute significantly towards a movie attaining box office status. Every Pirates of the Caribbean offering has had edge of the seat moments that have contributed towards its success. Pirates of the Caribbean 5 is expected to be one heck of a joyride. Yes, besides, Johnny Depp’s lovable multiple personalities, will be a string of new characters that will amuse movie enthusiasts. Though social networks are flooded with news and reports about the plot of Pirates of the Caribbean 5, the production team has been tight lipped about details, and rightly so. The makers of the fifth pirate installment have not revealed any information in regard with release date. If sources are to be believed Pirates of the Caribbean is slated for release in the first quarter of 2013.

What can you expect from Pirates of the Caribbean 5?

If you are biting nails wondering what the fifth installment of Pirates of the Caribbean will have in store, save your nails until the release. The newest offering is going to take adventure and fantasy to the next level. Dreamlike places and locations will be brought to life by graphics teams will make you jaw drop. Expect a lot of quirky conversation and delightful humor. Unlike in previous pirate series where Johnny Depp’s character talks less and says it all through facial expressions, gear up for a surprise this time. Yes, Jack Sparrow is going to be even more animated and at his talkative best in Pirates of the Caribbean 5.

The eagerly awaited offering is going to unleash a new side of Jack Sparrow that has never been witnessed. The obnoxiously lovable portrayal of the pirate that tickles your nerves will be taken to the next level. Action sequences will have audiences swallowing popcorn and soda. Your prayers will be answered. This one’s going to be a 3D spectacle like never before. Speculations are rife about Walt Disney Pictures all geared up to release the fifth and sixth installment of the Pirates of the Caribbean in quick succession. Speculations, fabricated stories, rumors, hype, it’s all gaining momentum to unimaginable proportions on social media. Expectations are exceedingly high? Will the movie surpass all expectations? Will it break box office records? The truth is far from clear. Time will reveal all. Here’s hoping Pirates of the Caribbean 5 does indeed turn out to be a box office hit.

My opinion on the possibility of a pirates of the caribbean 5.

Lately, I’ve heard that there has been a lot of talk about a possible new pirates of the caribbean installment. This would be the fifth installment of the pirates series after “Curse Of The Black Pearl”, “Dead Mans Chest”, “At Worlds End” and “On Stranger Tides”. So far, the four pirates of the caribbean installments have all been worth the money, time, and wait, though to be completely honest, I’m a bit concerned about a fifth installment.

As I’m sure we’ve all seen, most series that try to make too many installments of the same series tend to run out of ideas before they can finish what they intend to create, and the series ends up becoming a complete dead end. This is an extreme let down for people who have high hopes for the series (though when the series ends and its a complete success, that can also be a huge let down (such as DeathNote…still wish they’d make a new season…)).

On the other side, however, this could also be a huge oppertunity to yet again expand on the possibilities for this series. For those who pay close attention to the endings of each movie, there has always been clues, or possible hints, that there would be a next movie. After reading a few posts and watching the movie for myself, I believe that On Stranger Tides deffinitely left the ending open for a fifth installment.

I guess we’ll just have to wait and see what happens next. Who knows? Maybe the series will come to a dead end, or maybe it will continue its hot streak and keep us all in tune and waiting for more as we watch the adventures of Captain Jack Sparrow (played by Johnny Depp). Whatever the case, I’m sure that time will only tell if we are patient.

     Till next time! ~Tsynn~
