Were he looking down from on high today, at the way his ideas have shaped scientific thinking for the last 150 years, he would undoubtedly be extremely pleased.

Yesterday was an amazing anniversary, in terms of the person involved and his most incredible life work, which caused untold controversy in Victorian times, when first revealed to the world, but has been shaping the ideas of the scientific community around the entire world ever since.

No single person has been as influential about human understanding of life on Earth than English naturalist Charles Robert Darwin – born on 12 February 1809 in Shrewsbury, Shropshire into a wealthy and well-connected family and dying in 1882 -. whose theory of evolution by natural selection is now the unifying theory of the life science.

Darwen explained how the vastly diverse kinds of living things came about, how environmental adaptions occurred, his words the most plausible explanation for the phenomenon of evolution ever recorded. His massive evidence collecting was often based on his own observations and experimentation with natural flora and fauna.

Darwin clearly demonstrated that there is very little real difference between humans and other animals, and that degrees of difference in all things provoked profound reactions, many of which in heated debate to this day. Even were his theory of evolution to be put aside, his lifetime achievements are numerous, doing highly original and brilliant work in fields as diverse as geology, botany, psychology and scientific travel writing among other disciplines.

He was without a doubt one of the most original and influential people throughout science history. One of hisl grandfathers was Josiah Wedgwood – china manufacturer -, the other Erasmus Darwin – a leading 18th century English intellectual. Charles Darwin studied at Edinburgh University – at first for a medical degree – later switching to divinity at Cambridge before, in 1831, joining survey ship HMS Beagle on a 5-year scientific expedition.

Most Europeans of the time believed in creationism and the words of the bible, though Darwin’s reading of Principles of Geology by Lyell – the author asserting that fossils had to be evidence of ancient life-forms – reinforced Charles beliefs about the animal world. It was the Galapogos Islands where he noticed that individual islands supported their own finches – closely related but subtly different in each case.

Returning to the UK in 1836, Darwin began a two-decade search for the truth, experimenting and observing before, in 1858 jointly announcing – with fellow naturalist Alfred Russell Wallace – their discoveries over 20 years before, one year later Darwin published Origin of Species. This book caused uproar, simply because the contention that humans might just have evolved from apes threatened prevailing society ideas on how the world was created.

The scientist was savagely attacked, by the Church and other scientists, but once he had let his genie out of the bottle, there would never be any going back. He died on 19 April 1882 and was buried in Westminster Abbey, but there is little doubt that, were looking down from on high at the way his ideas have shaped scientific thinking for the last 150 years, he would undoubtedly be extremely pleased.

The law of least effort.

Nature’s intelligence function with effortless ease….

With carefress, harmony, and love

And when we harness the force of harmony, joy, and love

We create success and good fortune with effortless ease.

An integral being knows without going, sees without looking, and

Accomplishes without doing.

The law of pure potentiality.

The source of all the creation is pure consciousness…..

pure potentiality seeking expression from the unmanifest to manifest.

And then we realize that our true self is one of pure potentiality,

we align with the power that manifests everything in the universe.

In the beginning

There was neither existence nor non-existence,

All this world was unmanifest energy…..

The one breathed, without breath by it’s own power

Nothing else was there……..

Shudder at the thought that, if you took that hot date out to dinner and went back to her place afterward, she might just decide that her eating your manhood was going to happen for real, because she had an appetite to make you her dessert.

If you can imagine giving some things up for love, you would still, as a male human, baulk at the lengths some male spiders life go to, as their tumble with the lady of the choice can lead to the loss of his genitals, but researchers think they now know why.

Puzzled as they were why some male spiders have evolved to make this sacrifice, despite the injuries possibly leaving them sterile, University of Singapore scientist Dr Lin ran a series of meticulous experiments

studying orb-web spiders of the Nephilengys malabarensis variety, in which males are smaller than t females and often eaten by them during mating.

This gross sexual cannibalism is not the fate of every male, but what does happen every time is that the male sex-organ – the palp – breaks off inside the female during copulation, preventing other males from fertilizing her. Male spiders are usually have two palps at birth.

25 virgin males were used by the researchers, put onto webs loaded with waiting females. All male spiders mated, and in every case the palps had either been badly damaged or broken off altogether, though examination of the females revealed that only 35% of them had been injected with sperm, the rest apparently blocked by broken palps.

Broken palps, other tests confirmed, continued to inseminate the female after being broken off, males almost certainly having evolved to lose palps because this strategy meant fertilization would succeed even if the female ate the male alive during the sex act/

This so-called remote copulation probably evolved as a counter-measure against the natural female aggression toward males, short copulation times, and the high cannibalism rates, surviving males – as eunuchs – more aggressive than those with working palps, and better able to fight off other males approaching the female for sex.

Even so, it makes you shudder at the thought that, if you took that hot date out to dinner and went back to her place afterward, she might just decide that her eating your manhood was going to happen for real, because she had an appetite to make you her dessert.

If you were faced with a decaying corpse weighing many tons that was just too big to bury, what would you be inclined to do about it?

There is a tragic awfulness to the sight of something as magnificent as a whale being washed up dead on a beach, and local residents will go to extraordinary lengths to get rid of the decaying and putrid smelling flesh. Such carcasses would be put to use in olden times, but not so these days.

Varying enormously in size, dead whales are by no means easy to dispose of. Burying them through using large excavators is one option, though machinery capable of doing the job is likely to sink itself into a sandy beach, so a preferred option for disposal of the corpses is using explosives.

Blowing up dead whales is not uncommon, and mostly works very well, though there are occasional mishaps, like that which took place, in 1970 in Florence, Oregon with a 15metre long sperm whale carcass. Decided to have been too big to bury, the locals opted instead for the explosive route, but in an awesome misjudgement employed 20 full cases of dynamite!

The blast was so powerful that, huge chunks of blubber were hurled skyward, one 300lb lump chunk landing on the roof of an Oldsmobile 88 and trashing it, the exploding whale story keeping many a bar-fly occupied for months afterward, even though the reality had been anything but funny.

Taiwan was the location, on a beach in 2004, on January 26,where another beached whale blew up explosively, this time because decomposition gases exploded from the decaying corpse. Fifty men had manoeuvred the huge body onto a flat-bed truck to transport it, over a gruelling 13 hours.

It was driven slowly through the local town of Tainan, where a 600-strong crowd, enjoying snack foods, were ignoring the chilly weather to see what was going on. In the centre of town, those gases finally caused the bursting of the whale corpse, splattering blood and whale guts over everything around it.

Salt Spring Island, British Columbia, locals experienced the same thing, but on a local beach, the blubber reportedly hanging off nearby trees for weeks afterwards. In 2001, a humpback, beached near South African Port Elizabeth, and Southern White, beached by Cape Town in 2005 both got blown up to dispose of the bodies.

It is not at all uncommon for whales to beach, or for those living nearby to want to dispose of the bodies as efficiently as humanly possible, but such sad sights are a tragic reminder of the delicacy of oceanic eco-systems and the vulnerability of wildlife, and blowing up these tragic remains is nothing whatever to be amused about.

When are we going to die? We’re going to die when our death brings more benefits to nature than our lives.

We need to asses and understand if our death is more valuable to nature or our life. If nature is more benefited by having us alive then certainly we live otherwise we’re going to die.

Nature is running the show

Nature is the name of the system and we’re all part of that system. So does the other creatures, plant, trees, mountains and rivers. Everything that exists is included in the system.

We’re here to serve the nature. That is our job and that’s why we’re born and that’s why we die. We need to live close to nature and do what nature wants us to do. As a part of our job we need to grow more food and consume less, give birth to children and raise them and look after the system all the time.

Nature is spending much of its resources to keep us in good shape so that we may be of better service. All our needs are fulfilled so that we may do our job efficiently.

In spite of all these facilities if we fail to perform our duties then that would be a great loss to nature. And nature doesn’t tolerate losses.

When are we going to die?

We’re going to die when we’re causing loss or damage to the nature, such as:

Spending the resources of nature but not paying back enough.

Not using the available natural resources well and wasting them.

Not helping others when they’re in need.

Creating problems for environment like, cutting trees, mountains and killing other creatures without any valid reasons.

When are we going to die depends on how much we’re giving to nature while alive. If our contribution is negative then we are going to die soon.

Nature benefited by death

When we die our death is also of benefit to nature as we stop consuming its resources. And that’s a save which can be used for others.

Our dead or decomposed body could provide fertilizer to land, trees and plants. It could also be a source of nourishment for many small creatures.

Nature decides on our performance

We die for some purpose just like we live for some purpose. We die and we live to serve the nature. At times we serve the nature better if we stay alive. At other times we might serve better if we’re dead.

We’re just like a pawn in a chess board. Our birth, our life, our death all are of importance to nature. Which one is more important, nature decides on our performance.

When are we going to die is decided by nature for its own convenience.

Man and the universe...

I was just there…sitting in a crowd…and suddenly…I was just here. From there to here was as far as few inches. I felt things differently. There was as much sound as before , but it didn’t reach in..wasn’t overwhelming as before. There was a feeling of extasy..almost.

Now I could see it..the difference between in and out. In was real cause it had a relation to all that existed. And out didn’t feel as real..cause it was just passing by..fluctuating…Also cause it had only meaning for each one around projecting it or just thinking it might be real…

Now the paradox was clear….in was out of the bubble and out was caught in the reality of that bubble. Now, I could from inside, see how I was keeping that world together. I could also see in what way..it was just a lie..comfortable. The main difference was the amount of light that was naturally there out of the bubble and in me, and the total absence of natural light in that place around me. There was a separation, somehow…that looks like any movie with the good and evil. In my mind, it really seems so obvious, that good and bad were separated, giving meaning to one another, by their opposition. But from inside me, it made no sense. They were melted together and in that vision, I was free from them. At least, as I could see it, free from any interpretation, free from the fight between them…Now deep down within myself…there was a special kind of good…The good with no principles, the good that could hurt for the good…the good that was just the natural expression of the nature of man, the good that made the world a better place..for everyone. In the bubble, the good needed principles to support it. People had to think that they had to be good..it was the moral thing to do..but for principles, from what I see, you would have to fight against your will to hurt..your own need for good..No! now I knew…there was absolutely no need for life to be a struggle against oneself.. or any part of me. In the bubble, we tend to separate everything..so it will have a reason to fight..and fight and opposition was in the nature of that place…

Now, here in my self, empty, I was full…full of all the life. I had no idea, and didn’t need any.. Now I knew…I could be sitting anywhere in the world…throught my heart…cause the world, right there around.. was just a made up idea, shared by a lot of people… Well strange enough, it didn’t make it real….

Article about the symbolic nature of language; using I feel, you are, etc.

Language is nothing but a lot of symbols put together to describe phenomena that we see, feel, and experience. It allows self-reflection, organizes perceptions, and allows hypothetical thoughts. There is an obvious connection between language, the symbols we use to represent ideas, thoughts, and tangible items, and perception, which is how we view and understand things. Without the symbolic nature of language, we would have no way to communicate.

Wood(2010) wrote about self reflection and language. She said that we use language to reflect on ourselves.(Wood, 2010) “According to Mead(1934), there are two aspects to the self.”(as cited in Wood, 2010) The way I understand it, the two aspects are I and Me. The I aspect is only worried about itself and is unreceptive to what anyone else cares or thinks about. The Me aspect is what keeps the I in check. It is the part of us that watches and restrains the I’s rashness. It is the part of us that feels bad about what the I does. Because of the Me aspect, we think about what we want or do and decide whether it is okay or not. It helps us to control ourselves. An example of this is our greed. The I part of us wants everything from food, to money, to anything desirable. It is the part of us that wants to just take things from other people with no care in the world. The Me aspect is the part of us that controls that. It is what makes us think about the consequences and how it would make others feel if we did it.

She also said that “self reflection allows us to monitor communication”(Wood, 2010). Through self reflection, we think about what we are doing and saying, and adjust it to be successful. There are many times when I am talking to someone about my problems. The I part of me just wants to keep venting. The Me aspect makes me think about how the other person might want to vent as well, so I end up asking them how they are doing or if anything is wrong.

That self-reflection leads to how we feel about how others see or feel about us. It “allows us to manage our self image” (Wood, 2010). We use the symbolic nature of language to reflect ourselves in a positive way in other’s eyes.(Wood, 2010) The friend I asked about how they were feeling or doing would sees me in a better light by asking. If I had just gone on and on about me, and not asked them about themselves, then they would see me as selfish and narcissistic. If I go to an interview for a job I really want, I am going to automatically try to make myself look good to the prospective employer. I would make sure that they saw me as a responsible, smart, and fast learning kind of person.

The symbolic nature of language also helps us to organize perceptions. This means that based on what we are going through and who we are around is labeled by what and how something is said. Wood(2010) used a great example. Our friends can insult us and we take it in good fun. We consider it a joke and feel that it is okay for that person to say things like that. On the other hand, if we label someone as an enemy, or if it someone who we do not know, and they say the same exact thing to us, our perception is different. We see it as an actual insult and get angry. While it may be a double standard, our perceptions are organized by how we see and feel about the person who said it.

Because language is so organizational, we can think about abstract concepts like love, hate, loyalty, reliability, and righteousness. We think of things in general terms instead of individuality. (Wood, 2010) Language also stereotypes, which is the generalization of certain symbols. (Wood, 2010) When I think of “rednecks”, I think of hard-working country boys who drink a lot of beer, go hunting, and sport mullets. Even though I am very pro-homosexuals, when I hear the word “dyke”, I think of an overweight woman with very short hair who wears men’s clothing. Stereotypes are not a good thing, but these symbols are major generalizations that our minds cannot help but visualize.

The symbolic nature of language is what makes hypothetical thoughts possible.(Wood, 2010) Without symbols, we would not be able to put visualization to ideas. Symbols allow us to make plans and organize our goals, which allows us to grow personally.(Wood, 2010) These hypothetical thought allow us to remember the past, think about what is going on now, and plan for the future. (Wood, 2010)

So you see, the symbolic nature of language and perception goes hand in hand. Without these symbols, there would be no perception because we would not be able to communicate the abstract or the tangible. With language, I can tell someone that my culture reflects an idealism and perception that women are mostly independent, loving, and just as good as men. I can use language to perceive what others are saying and figure out how to react. I can follow communication rules such as talking calmly in public places and using appropriate punctuation to convey what I am saying. With language, I can define everything.

In summary, symbols and language teaches us how to self-reflect. It organizes our perceptions and allows us to live in a three dimensional world through our hypothetical thoughts. (Wood, 2010) Language is definitely connected to perception because it defines everything that is tangible and abstract. Without language, we would have no perception or communication.

Analysis of the Praise of Folly.

In the Praise of Folly, Erasmus describes the complete definition of a fool, using everyday follies in life, such as with women, death, nature, and even using references to ancient literature. The beginning is about his birthplace and father, but after the introductions, Erasmus seems to transform into the fool, and tells his story in this perspective. She, or folly, claims, “…you should attribute the origin of life to folly,” and continues, “…folly is being governed by emotion.” If you let yourself succumb to emotion, you are a fool.

Here the fool is asking if a woman would go through the pain of child birth or raising children again if she knew how hard it was going to be. Would men and women even get married if there were no fools? Folly has the ability to control lives, and even death, because it is induced in minds that do not think. Most fools do not have wisdom to pull themselves out of sticky situations. Folly brings upon the destruction of man, thus folly could very well be defined as destruction in a sense.

Folly is discussed as ignorance and points out that you are a fool for not living by nature. Instead, folly asks why language and aspects of grammar and such exist. Men were meant to live in harmony of nature. Fools are happy living in just nature. They don’t have to deal with everyday hardships. The ones that are knowledgeable are even called fools because the fools don’t understand them. It is similar to people teasing or discrediting somebody’s views or theories just because they cannot compute it, so they feel stupid.

Folly also states that fools are smart, in that they are not scared of death, supernatural elements, or evil. The mind is not troubled, and they provide others with joy. She even takes it one step further and claims that fools do not sin, but I completely disagree. If you are a fool you are more likely to sin. You have no structure to your life if you are a fool, no values or morals for living.

Fools can be deceived and gullible as well. They take things as being literal and can develop bad habits such as gambling. Fools are easily manipulated by the Devil and are not automatically accepted into Heaven just by reading a book in the Bible. Even fools have God’s love, but when you have Self-love, does this mean you are without God all together? I do not believe so.

Erasmus uses references from ancient literature and characters from mythology. Folly says her father is Plutus, not figures such as Homer or Saturn. Plutus governs all communication and decisiveness of man. Another example is referencing Nestor, the sage in Homer’s epic. Folly is describing vanity of old men trying to attract females. The point: do not rob the cradle. She compares Homer to Gryllus who was changed into a pig by Plutarch. Folly basically calls Odysseus a fool and worse than a pig because Homer sought wisdom and according to folly, “men who seek wisdom are furthest from happiness.”

I agree with Erasmus as far as what a fool is and I understand every point made, except that fools do sin. I also believe that folly is in everyone and everyone sins. I found it odd that on page 1,928 folly uses not eating pancakes or working out in a gym, comparing horses and bulls to humans to what is each species’ nature. What you don’t know or don’t have you won’t miss. This has to be the translator’s understanding and own insert so that modern day readers can understand. The Praise of Folly is well written and even contains a hint of comedy within its lines. It is informal and makes you think about how much of a fool you and I really are or could be.

In nature, there is no perfect philosophy, perfect science, perfect religion, perfect knowledge, perfect human or a perfect plan. Nothing can be perfect in this man-made finite world. Everything in the universe is moving, expanding and changing. Irrespective of good and bad every movement is the cause for further development.

There is a basic difference between the static philosophy and moving philosophy, static God and moving God, static science and moving science, static tradition and moving tradition. One of the spiritual persons Basavanna once said, “There is destruction for what stands but not for that which moves”.

Whenever nature gives birth to new wonders in the world, be it in science, religion, tradition, or in something else it represents a moving character. Nevertheless, this moving character will not last for a long time because of our own static way of thinking. Whenever new research emerged in the history of humanity, it has maintained moving character in the beginning, but slowly it has lost the beauty of the moving character because of the orthodox interaction of our own finite mind. Nevertheless, the transformation of moving character to static character occurs only in human mind, not in nature.

In the western world, now there is a spiritual madness to dig out all the static philosophies of the ancient history. Some are talking on Tantra, some are talking on Yoga, some are talking on Vastu, and some are talking on mediation and so on. In fact, they are searching for the static shelter to compensate or to define their own lethargic way of life. Nevertheless, our ancient Sages, Buddha, Krishna, Jesus, Rama, Prophet and other prominent spiritual personalities emerged with moving philosophy; not with a static one, but who made it static? Ask yourself! Which philosophy, science, religion, culture, god and tradition you are representing? Is it a static one or a moving one? Vivekananda says, “Faith is not a belief; it is the grasp of the ultimate as illumination”.

When we realize that nothing can be perfect, we will be completely integrated with nature. For example, during the Tsunami attack in South East Asia on December 26, 2004, the wild animals had already moved to safer zones of habitat. They instinctively sensed danger. The question is how did they decode the signs of the impending danger sent by nature, when the entire scientific world failed to warn about the imminent threat of Tsunami? The reason is simple. We, unlike the animals, have disconnected ourselves from nature and travelled far in to the world of materialistic pleasure. We have long lost the power to decode the sensitive vibrations of nature. Whenever vibrations reach us we are busy adding our selfish meaning to it, but the animals have remained far more receptive to the natural science of creation. The animals do not question nature or impose selfish thinking to such an event, they merely accept it, and survive.

When you cradle yourself in the bosom of nature, it takes care of you. Learning is not a process of abandoning nature. Somewhere in the process of building our own egocentric world, we have fatally forgotten the source we come from. Nevertheless, nature neither forgets nor forgives. It just balances its own creation.
