NEGROES HAD BEEN in the country now called the United States long before 1619. But in that year 20 Africans were landed at Jamestown, Virginia, and sold as slaves. Some of these Africans may not have been real Negroes. Is President Barack Obama American Negro?

This is the first in a fiction series called Pat Tresser. It is the story of a woman in the 1930’s faced with racism, poverty, and the murder of her father. Being black, the local sheriff does not investigate the crime and she is forced to find answers on her own. There are many young people who do not know of the accomplishments of black People. This might be the factor behind the desire of many to lightened the black race because the black Man’s greatest accomplishment was slavery. The black man is remembered in history for being a servant but disregarded for the fact that his servitude built the metropolitan countries we have today. Europe and the Americas were rich due to african slave labour and agro-industry in the days of slavery.

What did blacks contribute to history? Read and you will know more than you did yesterday and want to know more than you know now.

According to one writer, this is the reason behind the bleaching Phenomena in Jamaica
"Just because one refuses to consciously recognize the existence of distinct Euro-Jamaican/mulatto/Afro-Jam aican communities on the island, does not change the fact that there are substantial social, cultural, political, and economic differences between these communities. Labeling everyone “Jamaican” residing within the boundaries of the island does not change the fact that people of European and mulatto ancestry in Jamaica are considerably more advantaged, economically, politically and socially, than the majority of Jamaicans, who happen to be neither white nor mulatto."

Individuals of light skinned are automatically granted hierarchy on the social scene and competition for mates. The individuals that control the major factors of production, the corporate business leaders, politicians and the elites are predominantly descendants of European/Mulatto, East Indian or Asiatic descent. This situation has fostered the bleaching epidemic as darker skin women compete with their brown skin counterparts for jobs, opportunities and popularity among the masculine gender.

What does black History Month mean to Jamaicans? For many it is a time to reflect on our african ancestry, West indian Plantation System and Slavery. It is a time to lift our faces from the shame of being deemed lesser humans beings because of the color of our skin. It is the time when we celebrate the negro and negritude, culture, heritage and oneness.

The Black Manifesto, which was created in 1969, includes a demand for monetary reparations; a summary of the violence, crimes, and other oppressive acts that justify redress; and an outline of how the reparations ought to be spent for the creation of numerous black self-help programs, businesses, and institutions.
