An assessment of the so called "maverick" Senator's chances, to be the Republican nominee for President of the United States of America.

If you look very far in the distance of this 2008 marathon race for the Republican

nomination, you might just see Senator John Sidney McCain,III, on his figurative

white horse, with his sword in hand, riding to the rescue of the honor of the United

States of America, something he deeply believes in. Senator McCain was born in

the Panama Canel Zone, August 29, 1936. According to records, he graduated

from the United States Naval Academy in 1958 and the National War College in

1973, who better to fight for honor. He has been cited as a war hero by many, after

being held as a prisoner of war during the Vietnam conflict. His father and grandfather

were both four star Admirals. Senator McCain has been a United States Senator since

1986. He is married to his wife Cindy, they have seven children and four grandchildren.

One os his sons is scheduled to be sent to Iraq.

In the beginning of the campaign for the nomination, Senator McCain was the leader

of the pack, expectations were high, as he is a seasoned Senator and although he is

thought of as a maverick by many in his party, he is a smart, logical politican in many

ways. The Senator made a few missteps, ruffled a few if not many feathers, over

immigration, shook up his campaign staff and came down on the wrong side of the

Iraq war and the surge by some accounts, when the surge began, but has since been

proven correct, with the surge working to calm things down in Iraq, at the present time.

Never the less, Mr. McCain’s fortunes in the campaign race faltered, along with his

ability to raise the necessary cash to run a sustainable race. No money, no advertis-

ments, therefore no message and no exposure, creating a loss of momentum. Thus,

Senator McCain fell back in the polls to single digits and the pundits and talking heads

began to count him out.

But old soldiers never die as the saying goes, especially one who has a burning desire

to lead the country to a better place and one who, some feel woud have the best shot

at beating Senator Clinton or Obama in a general election. Also, Senator McCain is not

a quitter. Certain things must happen, naturally, for Senator McCain to triumph. First,

he must place a strong third or second, even better, in Iowa. Then he has to win in New

Hampshire, which he has done before. Currently he is three points behind Mr. Romney

there, which is a virtual tie for first place. The voters like McCain in New Hampshire, and

he may pull off a win over Mr. Romney there, even with Mr. Romney being the former

Governor of a neighboring state. Then it’s on to South Carolina, which may be a little

tricky, but if campaign funds start to come in, Senator Mccain may be able to win there

as well. If all these things come together, a small miracle could occur.

Three papers, so far have endorsed Senator McCain, the Boston Globe, which said that

“Senator McCain has done more than his share to transcend partianship and promote

honest discussion of the problems facing the United States.” The Des Moines Register of

Iowa, stated that “Senator McCain is the Republican candidate, it believes is the most

competent and most ready to go”. The Quad City Times of Davenport Iowa, also

endorsed Mr. Mc Cain.

With these endorsements coming in, Senator McCain’s credibility factor, as a strong and

able leader is starting to take and he is looking better and better against the rest of the

candidates, Mr. Huckabee might disagree, but time will tell. Senators Clinton or Obama may

have a real fight on their hands come November 2008. Should prove be very interesting.
