Here is another brand new year, friends.  This is a time not only to rejoice but also an occasion to make new year resolutions.  A person who desists from  working out at least one resolution is no person at all. What’s he/she then? you ask.  He is a person of great will power !

        Any new year resolution is taken right inside a club or a social function

or  some kind of get together  well  before midnight to usher in  the new year.

       The NYR have  a pattern about it.  No one takes a decision such as “I won’t snap at people” or “I won’t use harsh words against any one” or “I will bring flowers to my wife daily when I return from the workplace”

       To digress a little about the fellow who brings flowers.  The wife asked him one day, “Is the flower girl a pretty thing or what?” Our hero stopped  the routine  from the following day to make it clear to  wifey that the flower girl is NOT. Wearing flowers on the head is a South Indian custom.  You will never find a lady without  strings of jasmines  adorning her head any time  of the day unless she happens to be a widow. We have digressed a lot.  Now back to NYR.

       Taking NYR  at  2355 hours on 31 st Dec is usually the order of the day. One acts brave that he had stopped smoking or had given up drinking.  On the following day, the New year’s day, he would go about with a heavy face like the world has fallen on his head. “What’s the matter, George?”

      “I have … have  …. given, given  up smoking … yaar.”

      “Oh,  that’s great George.  Since when?”

      “That’s my NYR, friend.”  After a long  pause he would say, “It  calls for a tremendous bit of  determination, you know?”

      “Telling me?  I have done that on several New year days. I should know.”

      “But then, why are you smoking now?”

      “Today is second of January, you see?”

       “What?  What?  Is it  permissible?”

       “Sure, friend.  NYR is just for that day.  Second January is not a new year’s day, is it?  See what I mean?”

        George’s face shone instantly. “Do you mean to say, I can smoke today?”

       “Of course, you can.  Today is 2nd January, remember? Your wife won’t object.

Incidentally, did she ever tell you to stop smoking?”

      “Not directly though.”

      “There you are.  Your wife is on your side, you see?  Go on. Enjoy your fag. Why do you deprive  yourself of  this minor pleasure?”

       “I agree Milton.  We shouldn’t deny ourselves small pleasures in life.

 New year has  already become old year from today. What do you say?”

       Peter who had stopped drinking at the stroke of midnight two days back was at the Officers Mess bar  at 1930 hours on 2nd of January.

       A New Year Resolution is valid only for the first of January and never beyond. Please make a note !

The envelope resolution is a great idea as the person can be seen to physically do something about his or her problem by writing them down and show his intention to succeed. On New Year’s Eve in a few days from now, this writer’s daughter will open her envelope and see what her resolutions were and whether she had adhered to them and how little or how much she had succeeded in reaching her goals. Of course one must do everything to fend off bad habits and prevent them from controlling your body.

How New Year came about

New Year did not always start on January 1st and does not begin everywhere on that date. It begins on that day for cultures that use a 365-day solar calendar. January 1st became the beginning of the New Year in 46 B.C. when Julius Caesar developed a calendar that would more accurately reflect the seasons than other calendars. The Romans named the first month of the year after Janus, the god of beginnings and the guardian of doors and entrances. He was shown to have two faces; one on the front of his head and one on the back. He could therefore look backward and forward at the same time. At midnight on December 1st the Romans imagined Janus looking back at the old year and forward to the new and so began a tradition of exchanging gifts on New Year’s Eve. In the Middle Ages, Christians changed New Year’s Day to December 25th. After undergoing some changes, the date was returned to January 1st and the Romans started the tradition of giving gifts on New Year’s Eve by exchanging branches from sacred trees. In conclusion, despite the fact that the date for New Year’s Day is not the same in every culture, it remains a time for celebration and to foster good luck in the coming year.
