1. Keep it Challenging but Realistic.

Please take a moment this week to sit down and decide on your goals for the New Year. Even if it is past the New Year and even well into the year, set your goals for the rest of the year.

Kananga Mayor Elmer Codilla informed the Philippine Information Agency that the stalls gutted by fire were make­shift stalls located away from the public market in order to ensure safety of the consumers and the businessmen in the pub­lic market.

There was no damage to per­manent infrastructure because the makeshift stalls were actu­ally occupying the sidewalks of the street, Codilla added.

Initial investigations con­ducted by the Bureau of Fire Protection in Kananga revealed that a woman was seen hold­ing a lighted Whistle Bomb fire­cracker before the fire started at 2:00 p.m.

It was learned that the 26 stalls located near the public market were located just in front of the town’s fire station.

The members of the local Bureau of Fire Protection were able to immediately respond preventing the fire from spread­ing in other parts of the market.

The fire was controlled after one hour with no casualties except for one woman who was injured when she fell while flee­ing away from the fire scene.

Damages incurred because of the fire incident was initially placed at P571,000.

It was also learned that because of the fire incident, the selling of firecrackers in the mar­ket was immediately suspended by authorities.

To recall, the Bureau of Fire Protection was directed by DILG Sec. Jesse Robredo to ensure that establishments selling and man­ufacturing firecrackers beduly approved by the proper authori­ties to ensure the safety of the public, Bautista added.

Why do we need a fresh start? May be because things that are important to us are not working the way we want them to work. A new beginning inspires us to let bygones be bygones and start shaping things how we want.

According to a survey conducted Huffington Post (via an online survey services provider SocialSci and Mechanical Turk), against 230 adult respondents in the United States, women and men have different priorities in the development itself. Respondents answered questions about the custom of making resolutions, including resolutions they made in the past. This survey shows what kind of resolution are the priorities of women and men.

* Exercise: 78 percent of women, men 70 percent.
* Life is more regularly: 74 percent women, 66 percent male.
* More patient: 73 percent of women and men have this resolution.
* Work harder: men 73 percent, 67 percent of women.
* More to enjoy life: 69 percent of women, men 64 percent.
* Stop smoking: 63 percent male, 53 percent of women.
* Spend more time with your spouse: 61 percent of women, men 60 percent.
* Spend time with friends: 61 percent of women choose it, while only 49 percent of men who make New Year’s resolution.
* Stop drinking alcohol: 60 percent male, 14 percent of women.
* Spend more time with your children often: 59 percent of mothers, fathers 57 per cent.
* Lose weight: 57 percent of women, men 54 percent.

This survey also shows more women than men often make resolutions. As many as 63 percent of female respondents admitted they made a resolution every year, while only 50 percent of men who do the same. Women also tend to be more open, to let resolutions that they made to others. While 93 percent of male respondents said the resolution is personal and only for yourself not to be disclosed to others.

Hopes for the New Year

It is human and natural to look forward to a better tomorrow; who wants to remain static as the world hurtles fast into 2012? Our politicians are looking forward to the 2012 elections, our children are looking forward to leaving school and home, our bosses are looking forward to the next big contract and the extra hours we shall work to make them richer, and we are looking forward towards month’s end pay slip. 

We look forward to getting a new job, we look forward to meeting good nice obedient and prosperous mates/partners, we look forward to new business breakthroughs to make us millionaires, we look forward to a blight future full of happiness and bliss.

Glorious Past

When not dreaming of a prosperous future, we are all nostalgic about the past. We remember being young and beautiful and all loved. We remember standing in podiums taking all ululations. We remember being the boss and lording over servants. We remember being healthy and with a full crown, not the pretend wig. We remember being popular and being happy. We long to go back to where there was free milk and honey. Else, we live our lives on hold waiting to relocate to a new haven where there is no toil and stress.

The Present 

Accepting that the here and now is all that matters takes an irrational clause. Why should we accept the mediocre when the good preachers are promising riches and power and happiness. Why should we settle for what we have and are when we have the capacity to make ourselves 100 times better? 

Yet, there is a reason why the here and now is called the present. It is the present from God the Father and Provider and Sustainer. It is the present that makes us accept His purpose and plans for us. It is the present to learn to trust Him in whatever we may be going through. It is the present of promised peace. 

How good it would be if we were to give up the worries and just learn to lean on Him? How wonderful it would be the cast all our burdens to Him who knows us better and has the best of our lives in His able hands! How refreshing it would be to take all our broken pieces to Him to make the best of us! 

Aspirations and dreams are all good, but they are all God’s gifts to us and must never take away the present that He has bestowed on us. Therefore, brethren, accept your perfect station today as the best present from God, for He knows why.

Alcohol:
