To truly understand America, one of the books you must read is Uncle Tom’s Cabin. This book, written from the viewpoint of a slave named Uncle Tom, who is owned by Mr. Shelby. Tom is known by his owner as a very reliable and pious man. Mr. Shelby is forced to sell Tom to a plantation owned by Augustine St. Clair. It is on this plantation that Tom is beaten so severely that he dies two days after his beating. This book portrayed the horrifying reality of slavery. It shows the extreme cruelty of slave owners and the pain filled lives of slaves. This book showed Northerners how gruesome slavery was and how it needed to be abolished at any cost; including war. When Stowe visited the white house, Lincoln said to her, “So you’re the little woman who wrote the book that started this great war!” (Enotes) Lincoln’s statement shows how great of an impact Uncle Tom’s Cabin had on the entire country.

“But what can any individual do? Of that, every individual can judge. There is one thing that every individual can do, – they can see to it that they feel right. An atmosphere of sympathetic influence encircles every human being; and the man or woman who feels strongly, healthily and justly, on the great interests of humanity, is a constant benefactor to the human race.” (Uncle Tom’s Cabin 442). In the final chapter of the book, Stowe speaks to all her readers directly. In this quote, Stowe is telling her readers to believe in what they think is morally right, now what society thinks. She says we should be independent in our thoughts and not let other people decide for us what is right and wrong. If people think slavery is wrong, they should stand up to defend the rights of all humans, black and white.

A movie that future Americans need to watch to understand America is Grand Torino. This movie follows the life of retired auto worker Walt Kowlaski, whose neighbors have all moved away and have been replaced by immigrants from Southeast Asia. He is faced with many foreign faces from Hmong, Latino, and African gangs that try to control his neighborhood. His neighbor Thoa is pressured into stealing Kowlaski’s 72 Grand Torino, but Kowlaski stops him and stands between Thoa and the gangs. The friendship between Kowlaski and Thoa makes Kowlaski realize things about himself and his neighbors and how he has more in common with them than his own family. This movie shows present day America from a war veteran who is waiting out the rest of his life. It shows how gangs can have a great influence on teenagers who are growing up without much parental authority. It also shows how a small friendship can lead to discovering things about yourself that you may have never known.

This book teaches many details about slave life during the Antebellum period in America. It shows the many hardships slaves had to deal with daily such as hard work and a struggle for survival. It also shows how slave owners treated their slaves; from kind Mr. Shelby to ruthless Augustine St. Clair. It showed the kind Quakers who helped Eliza and George escape to the north, and it showed slave hunters such as Tom Loker who made a living from capturing runaway slaves. This book accurately describes the south during Antebellum America.

Step 1:  Only write about things people care about.  If you write about things that nobody is going to search, chances are you aren’t going to get any views.  Write articles that you would search the title of.  If you are searching for it, chances are that other people are too.  Write about things that are happening currently.  The best type of tea to have when you friends are over is not the best article to write if you’re looking for lots of views.

Step 2:  Make sure the tags cover everything.  That way, no matter what people search, if it is related to what you wrote it will show up.  This will increase views greatly.  Even if something is slightly related to your article, write a tag about it.  Anything even remotely related or not related to the article should be in the tags.  Same as the last step, make the tags something somebody should search.
